The colour of music

Shamshad Begum, whose voice was instrumental in the success of Naya Daur, won't be able to attend the premiere of the colour version of the film. But she has great memories of it

Shamshad Begum

While the leading pair of Naya Daur will be gracing the premiere of the colour version of the film, Shamshad Begum, whose golden voice made a huge contribution to the film, will be giving it a miss.

Eighty-eight-year-old Shamshad Begum lives with her daughter Usha Ratra and is unable to walk. Usha says, "My mother cannot travel as she is confined to a wheelchair and therefore we will not be able to attend the premiere." Shamshad Begum sang the famous song 'Reshmi salwar kurta jaali ka' in Naya Daur.

Shamshad is still in tune with the times. Usha says "My mother keeps herself tuned in to the political developments in the country. She loves to watch programmes such as The Big Fight and Muqabla. Of course there are some favourite serials like Kasamh Se and Saath Phere which she watches regularly."

Despite countless hit songs and her immense contribution to Indian cinema, Shamshad Begum is yet to receive the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Usha says, "Naushadsaab called my mom and told her that he is recommending her name for Dadasaheb (Phalke award), my mother told him that there was no point as she was sure that the award would go to someone else. All the same, he recommended her name, but the award went to someone else. We know what kind of politics goes on and we certainly don't want to be part of it. She does not need these awards, she has already got her reward from the people considering that even today people are singing remixed versions of her songs." 'Kajra mohabbatwala', 'Kahin pe nigahen kahin pe nishana' and 'Mere piya gaye Rangoon' are a few songs sung by Shamshad Begum that have stood the test of time and changing trends.
