Risky business: Salil Ankola turns to TV production
After cricket and then acting, Salil Ankola has now turned his attention to production.
Along with longtime associate Sejal Shah, Ankola has started Film Temple, a production company which will make ad films, documentaries, television software and even corporate events.
Sejal Shah has directed award-winning documentary films like Joginis and Mangala Bansode Dance party.
Says Ankola, "Sejal was the chief assistant director in Khakhi, a TV serial I was acting in almost three years ago. We realised we shared many ideas about making films and TV software. So we decided to start Film Temple."
Film Temple's first few projects will be funded through this duo's personal resources. But Ankola brushes off the risk involved with a simple "there's a risk in everything".
If Film Temple's initial project is any indication, the risk might just pay off. Just last month, this duo made an ad film for Daily Mirror, a Sri Lankan newspaper, which Ankola reports has become a rage in that country.
"The ad has become so popular that the actor in the ad, who used to do stage is now getting film offers. Other work will follow, there are no concrete plans right now. We have sent proposals. Things will be finalised in a couple of weeks," he says.
Although Ankola and Shah have big plans about their films, their priority remains making something that children will love to watch. "Where children's entertainment is concerned, I see a lot of potential. We'd love to do something on that front."
