Its not about the screen space but the overall impact of the character. Patty is been repeatedly shown as an individual player. Even after NJ dies he doesn’t learn that how important is team work. When everyone including Taj ask him not to cross loc he doesn’t listen and instigates Taj instead saying you can go back if you want. That portrays Taj as a better soldier and a better friend than Patty. Taj wants to obey orders of Rocky but for Patty he ends up being caught. This is so dumb. As a senior Patty’s sense of responsibility is negligible. While this might be a debatable topic itself that whether a soldiers focus should be a dead enemy or completing targets given by his team and them coming back safely, Nobody out of the team (except Anil) try to either call Patty out or try to justify it with rocky that why he is right/not. Audience is left to form their moral opinion on their own while the movie doesn’t care about it.
For whole of second half Patty is off the aircraft. As an audience you expect a fast paced narrative where the hero is doing more smartwork than just sulking around for an action he consciously himself did and doesnt regret about much.The whole Hyderabad thing doesnt fit into the story anywhere. He is shown missing Taj but he ultimately doesn’t do anything about getting him back until they show the government deciding to return the two soldiers.
In most patriotic films the hero/heroine is shown not just doing heroic things but their sense of responsibility is always aligned which is not true here. There’s a show on hotstar Shoorver, its about IAF and while the aerial action in fighter might be much better the conflicts in that show teach you how to direct a story about airforce officers. That show portrays a similar officer like Patty who is arrogant but his character is so well written that it gives you goosebumps.

Well that is dumb on Sid and Hrithik's part I guess, they should have been more careful with characterisation instead of the screen space.
