31st December the last day of any year, and 1st January marks the beginning of a new year. For many centuries, these two days have been the most special and popular as people bid goodbye to the current year, recollect all the good as well as bad memories of the year, and welcome the new year with the hope that it will be a better year than the previous one. 31st December is often called New Year’s Eve, and 1st January the, New Year’s Day.

People celebrate the new year with their family and friends in their unique ways by following various traditions, attending parties, watching movies, going to different shows/concerts, eating delicious food, and watching the fireworks display right at midnight. They also make New Year resolutions which include what they plan to do or don’t want to do in the new year.

Talking of traditions, here’s how various traditions are followed in some parts of the world. One of the traditions includes people eating their specific ‘lucky’ foods with their families and friends on New Year’s Eve.

For example, in Spain, Portugal, and other Latin American countries, people eat 12 grapes or raisins. In Italy, people eat 12 spoonfuls of lentils.

The French eat pancakes whereas in the Netherlands, people eat doughnuts and ring-shaped foods.

In Scotland, people celebrate by attending parties which are called Hogmanay which usually start on December 30 and end on 1st January. The most common tradition in these Hogmanay celebrations is the ‘first footing’ which involves being the first to visit the friends and neighbors with a symbolic gift in hand. People sing the song ‘Auld Lang Syne’ as the clock strikes midnight.

In Edinburg, there are large processions all over the city on 30th December with people dressed as pipers and drummers. On New Year’s Day, the party ends with a swim in the waters of the Firth of Forth.

In the Philippines, people have this unique tradition of wearing polka-dotted clothes and eating round-shaped fruits as they believe it brings prosperity and good luck.

In Brazil, people are dressed in white, run into the water of the sea at midnight on New Year’s Eve, and jump over seven waves. Each wave and jump signifies a different request the swimmer is making to a different orixa or God.

In Mexico, there’s an interesting tradition of people walking on the roads with an empty suitcase believing that the new year will be filled with travel and new experiences.

In Cuba, people throw dirty water outside their houses on New Year’s Eve. The dirty water symbolizes negative energy and bad spirits.

In Greece, Podariko which means ‘good foot’ is an important custom that is followed to bring good luck. Before New Year’s Eve, people hang pomegranates which are believed to bring good luck outside their door. On New Year’s Eve before midnight, everyone will leave the house after turning off the lights and one family member enters the house with his/her right foot first. Then another individual takes the pomegranate in their right hand and smashes it on the door. The Greeks believe that the more juicy seeds that spill out, the more luck the new year will bring.

In Russia, people spend the last 12 seconds before the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve to make wishes.

In Denmark, people jump into the new year. At midnight, people jump off their chairs or sofas as they believe it brings good luck.
