In 2005, he founded the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), which emerged as a significant political force in Tamil Nadu. The party championed the cause of Tamil people and stood for their rights. During his tenure as the leader of the opposition from 2011 to 2016, the DMDK played a crucial role in Tamil Nadu politics.
