More than Shahs, the writers' desperate attempt to seek sympathy for them is the problem. Shahs are important . Vanraj is as important as Anuj or Anupama, but his beauty lies in being an antihero. He is not a hero. His journey cannot take up center stage, for whatever reasons. His or Baa's contribution in the story is that of hurdle creators and they have been established as such. After showing Vanraj as a manipulative, shrewd, cheater, abusive character, you cannot dilute the impact of his actions by again and again showing how much of an acha Pita he is and he is not that either. That does not mean he cannot love his children but that is not his utility as a character. Along with Anupama and Anuj, his character has taken a major hit and has also exposed his limited range of acting skills unfortunately. Baa and Vanraj can be grey but they will always be on the darker end of the spectrum. Moreover after 1000 + episodes, won't the audience expect some character growth, at least in the lead characters? After writing all those episodes of Shah family restraining Anupama's personal and professional growth, her life, you want people to believe that some how her new family and her ex family came together as one strong unit without any complaints or awkwardness towards each other to dance and enjoy... All the character have taken a hit because after showing so much abuse hurled at the lead character, they want everyone to just forget about everything and be blind to their writing.
