They're protesting by not working and there are picket lines. Last night at the Oppenheimer premiere in the UK all the actors who'd been there yesterday and today doing interviews on the red carpet immediately left when the strike was called. Christopher Nolan wound up on stage with just his production crew. But he said he was in solidarity with them as a writer.

The writer's strike has been going on for about two months and they're striking over payment - one huge point that they are poorly compensated for streaming after losing money on the re-runs they used to have on regular TV. This was something they caved on back in 2007 when studios claimed they weren't making money on streaming. In addition the are labor conditions. Also there are issues with proposed AI to "write" scripts replacing writers.

In regards to actors strikings it's also about working conditions, minimum fees for actors, stuntmen, stand ins, dancers, residuals, transparency in streaming numbers etc. AMPTP (Motion Picture & Producers) said in their offer to SAG (Screen Actors Guild) that they should not have to pay anyone or ask permission to use AI digital doubles of anyone who is dead. They backed down for all actors except background actors. They actually think it's alright to pay an actor for one day of work and then be able to use that image forever in any other work they want - even to the point manipulating that image into a "performance" (like what they did with Christopher Reeve in The Flash) without payment and consent. It's not only grotesque but would eliminate the jobs of thousands of day and walk on actors.

Hollywood is such scum that they are circumventing these strikes to film and start production by shifting the shooting locations where SAG can't hold it's sway, particularly in Europe. The new Dune will begin shooting in Budapest next month. Similarly, HOTD is also shooting since the cast is overwhelmingly British managed by their own union. But the production is HBO, owned by Warner Bros.

I bet if this continues, hollywood will outsource acting too. She will start hiring actors from Europe and South Asia who could speak good English to film roles that do not require big names. Slowly they will start outsourcing technicians as well.

Just gonna have to wait and watch what actually comes out of this.

Can AI replace actors too? If not now, then in the near future...

I don't think AI could ever replace a human full of emotional complexities, in essence an actor portraying such character. But they're doing this. Replacing background and other inconsequential characters. Apparently they paid these people $100 for their likeness which they can use for eternity. Who's to say what else can AI replace?

I think performing artists have leverage against AI for now.

Realism still has a lot of advantages over studio generated. Adi Purush is a shining example of how a lavish studio budget cannot enamor audiences. With Top Gun: Maverick and MI: Dead Reckoning, Tom Cruise has shown that people still love real stunts.

Yes, AI can probably generate realistic backgrounds and stunts with actors, but for now, flawless AI that is comparable and indistinguishable from realism is super expensive.

Using AI-generated likenesses of certain celebrities has value because of that celebrity's legacy. Christopher Reeve was a legend as Superman; a random person's likeness or an artificially generated face would have no value.

They could use AI to generate the likeness of famous celebrities. But legally they have the power to forbid the use of their likeness, unless the right to use their likeness was slipped into some contract.

And what about the future? Celebrities are big not just because of their performances - but because of their whole selves - their fan interactions, interviews, social media posts, and pap walks. AI cannot recreate that.
