They did it to purely expand own business and tap into South Asian diaspora abroad that lacks entertainment options of own culture and unknowingly in process they got some foreign audience for Indian films too.

I would agree and not advocate for Bollywood celebs to get Bharta Ratna. But if entertainment has one of the criteria in Bharat Ratna then it should have a chance.

Lol merit is not equivalent to popularity. Bharat Ratna does not award some actor/public figure just cos they are popular. If that were true every popular nautanki in Bollywood would eye for Bharat Ratna. The basic tenet of Bharat Ratna is this

The Bharat Ratna is conferred "in recognition of exceptional service/performance of the highest order", without distinction of race, occupation, position, or sex.

Now answer truthfully who in Bollywood is even worthy of this, strictly speaking.

Also, just adding Mother Teresa was a naturalised citizen and not a non-indian. Only Abdul gaffar khan and Mandela are non-indians who have been awarded

No, Tom, entertainment isn't a part of the realms, art is one of them.

As for "popularity"...well, I'm not here to judge the awarding ๐Ÿ˜‰

Actually, as long as there is the use of "Bollywood" for the Hindi filmindustry, an "exceptional service/performance of the highest order" will not even cross the mind...or would it? (that is - of course - valuable for all the other ridiculous -"woods" coined for an Indian filmindustry)

^Relevance is rated differently. As I said earlier Bollywood is a dirty place or it has been made to be like that so it stands no chance to receive an award like Bharat Ratna. It will probably lose its value according to current regime who are mostly Anti-Bollywood or their language suggests so.

Also it may start trend #BoycottBharatRatna ๐Ÿคฃ

People crying for BW actors not getting Bharat Ratna

Needs to firstly know what is Bharat Ratna and why it is given.

It is not filmfare ki kisiko bhi de diya.

Yes

There have been controversial names getting Bharat Ratna but none for BW deserves it.

Aisa kiya kya hain that they should be getting this honour?

They are earning wayy more than they deserve and almost every middle class is paying taxes toh kya sabko Bharat Ratna milega.

Matlab kuch bhi

They haven't done anything for society as large, there should be a reason to get one and none of them have any.

Does nor matter. It is still no exceptional service to nation nor some holy do gooder service that stars or filmmakers do  for nation.
