They don't have even enough money to ruin auction of other teams by bidding high on players😆

The limit for overseas in 8. The available limit shows how much more they can add to complete the overseas limit of 8. For Ex Chennai have 2 slots left out of 8. The 6 overseas they already have are Moeen, Pretorious, Theekshana, Pathirana, Conway, Santner.

They can because they have a hidden gem for Coach "Chandrakant Pandit". No one knows Indian domestic scene better than him. He is a champion coach known for making teams win trophies. He was the reason Venky started opening. Wont be surprised if KKR plays like RR of old. Full of domestic superstars that are cheap buys.

  1. In my opinion SRH having the best auction. ðŸ˜† They always do and screw up in IPL🤪
  2. Preity (PBKS) will be the rich spoilt kid that has tons of money and wants everything.
  3. RR will do basement shopping. Jo bacha wo utha lo. ðŸ¤£
  4. KKR will be the trolls and window shoppers. Wont be able to buy anything because no money and will end up like RR.
  5. CSK/GT/LSG/DC/RCB will not buy much because they have more or less fixed squads.
  6. MI can go anyway because they have good squad but mostly youngsters. would want a few overseas stars.

IPL 2023 Auction - What the teams need

December 22 2022

87 players can be bought in the auction87 players can be bought in the auction

It's that time of the year again when IPL franchisees jostle to fill the holes in their squad ahead of the new season. Unlike last time, this will be a mini-auction where only a maximum of 87 players can be bought, from an overall pool of 405 players. As usual, each squad can have a maximum of only 25 players. The auction will begin at 2:30 PM IST in Kochi on December 23.

Cricbuzz presents a lowdown on each team ahead of the event, breaking down their existing combinations, and charts their possible auction strategy.

Purse - INR 20.45 cr || Slots left - 7 || Overseas slots left - 2

Existing squad breakdown

Top-order batters: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devon Conway, Moeen Ali, Subhranshu Senapati

Finishers:Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni

Allrounders: Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube, Rajvardhan Hangargekar, Dwaine Pretorius

Spinners: Mitchell Santner, Maheesh Theekshana, Prashant Solanki

Fast bowlers: Deepak Chahar, Mukesh Choudhary, Simarjeet Singh, Tushar Deshpande, Matheesha Pathirana

Issues & Requirements

- CSK pacers had the second worst economy in death overs in IPL 2022 with an ER of 11.46; Mukesh Choudhary went at 13.69 while Pretorius conceded at 12.70. Since 2018, Deepak Chahar has bowled only 10.3% of his overs in this phase. Dwayne Bravo was their best bowler in this phase last year with 11 wickets at 9.48 but he will no longer turn up for them as a player. A reunion with Sam Curran is certainly on the cards to plug this gaping hole but the left-arm seamer will be in high demand after his exploits in the T20 WC.

- Pathirana is the only 140+ seamer in the squad and CSK might look to another high pace quick who could come handy for their away games.

- Over the years, CSK haven't really preferred wrist spinners in their squad barring the 2019 season where Imran Tahir dazzled. But given they have only Prashant Solanki as the leg-spin option currently, it's an area they can certainly look to add.

- CSK have released the TN pair of N Jagadeesan and Hari Nishanth while Robin Uthappa has quit. Devon Conway is the only backup wicketkeeper in the squad. Ambati Rayudu endured a poor domestic season and CSK might look for a backup for the experienced middle-order batter. The squad also has four left-handers in their potential top six and would want more right-handers in their roster. Jagadeesan's recent form might tempt them.

Possible Targets:Sam Curran, N Jagadeesan, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Adam Zampa, Adam Milne, Manish Pandey, Rohan Kunnummal, Sikandar Raza

Purse - INR 19.45 cr || Slots left - 5 || Overseas slots left - 2

Existing squad breakdown

Top-order batters: David Warner, Prithvi Shaw, Michell Marsh, Yash Dhull

Finishers: Rishabh Pant, Rovman Powell, Sarfaraz Khan, Ripal Patel

Allrounders:Axar Patel, Lalit Yadav, Aman Khan

Spinners: Kuldeep Yadav, Pravin Dubey, Vicky Ostwal

Fast bowlers:Chetan Sakaria, Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi, Mustafizur Rahman, Khaleel Ahmed, Kamalesh Nagarkoti

Issues & Requirements

- An established backup opener will be in the shopping list for DC given how they struggled last season when either David Warner or Prithvi Shaw was absent.

- Up until Mitchell Marsh became fully fit in the later half of the tournament, Capitals struggled for a genuine No.3 to follow the likes of Warner and Shaw. Yash Dhull is the only spare top order batter in the squad.

- DC need a backup wicketkeeper for Pant. The squad also lacks batting depth.

Possible Targets:Jason Roy, Phil Salt, Rilee Rossouw, Kane Williamson, Litton Das, Vishnu Vinod, Jason Holder, Dasun Shanaka

Sam Curran is set to be in high demandSam Curran is set to be in high demand

Purse - INR 19.25 cr || Slots left - 7 || Overseas slots left - 3

Existing squad breakdown

Top-order batters: Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, Wriddhiman Saha, Matthew Wade

Finishers: David Miller, Rahul Tewatia, Abhinav Manohar

Allrounders: Hardik Pandya, Vijay Shankar

Spinners:Rashid Khan, Sai Kishore, Noor Ahmad, Jayant Yadav

Fast bowlers: Alzarri Joseph, Mohammed Shami, Yash Dayal, Darshan Nalkande, Pradeep Sangwan

Issues & Requirements

- With Jason Roy released and Rahmanullah Gurbaz traded, Titans need an overseas backup opening option.

- The defending champions would also look at an ideal No.3 after their options struggled to cement their spot. Sai Sudharsan's stocks keep rising but Titans would love an experienced head.

- Alzarri Joseph is the only overseas quick in their roster. Titans might look for a backup or even an upgrade to deliver at the death.

Possible Targets:Mayank Agarwal, Virat Singh, Travis Head, Josh Philippe, Rilee Rossouw, Joe Root, Sam Curran, Tymal Mills, Jhye Richardson, Reece Topley, Joshua Little, Sheldon Cottrell

Purse - INR 7.05 cr || Slots left - 11 || Overseas slots left - 3

Existing squad breakdown

Top-order batters: Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Shreyas Iyer, Venkatesh Iyer

Finishers: Nitish Rana, Rinku Singh

Allrounders:Andre Russell, Anukul Roy

Spinners: Varun Chakaravarthy, Sunil Narine

Fast bowlers:Tim Southee, Lockie Ferguson, Harshit Rana, Shardul Thakur, Umesh Yadav

Issues & Requirements

- Having spent heavily on Shardul Thakur and Lockie Ferguson, KKR have the least amount of money to spend. Most of the players they need though are backups, which makes things a little easier for them.

- KKR need backup batters in the squad, both overseas and domestic. They would definitely look to target an overseas option for the top order.

- KKR spinners averaged 45.56 - the worst among all teams - though they were economical (ER 6.94). Teams off late have preferred to play out Narine which has affected his wickets tally and Varun Chakravarthy had an awful IPL 2022 adding to KKR's spin woes. A third option would definitely be appreciated.

- Gurbaz is the only keeper present in the squad and they might want one or two more options, preferably domestic.

Possible Targets:Harry Brook, Travis Head, Josh Philippe, Kane Williamson, Sheldon Jackson, N Jagadeesan, KS Bharat, Shashank Singh, Mayank Markande, Murugan Ashwin

Mayank Agarwal leads the small list of high profile Indian namesMayank Agarwal leads the small list of high profile Indian names

Purse - INR 23.35 cr || Slots left - 10 || Overseas slots left - 4

Existing squad breakdown

Top-order batters: KL Rahul, Quinton de Kock, Manan Vohra, Kyle Mayers

Finishers: Marcus Stoinis, Ayush Badoni

Allrounders: Deepak Hooda, Karan Sharma, Krunal Pandya

Spinners:Krishnappa Gowtham, Ravi Bishnoi,

Fast bowlers: Avesh Khan, Mohsin Khan, Mayank Yadav, Mark Wood

Issues & Requirements

- Loaded with quite a few top order batters, Lucknow Super Giants need a couple of middle order batters having released Evin Lewis and Manish Pandey.

- The batting order lacks depth. None of LSG's four first choice bowlers can bat (Wood, Avesh, Bishnoi & Mohsin). Holder, the bowling all-rounder, has been released and as a result, a pursuit for Sam Curran cannot be ruled out.

- Given Mark Wood's injury record, Super Giants will be eyeing a backup pace option as well.

Possible Targets:Harry Brook, Cameron Green, Ben Stokes, Sam Curran, Priyam Garg, Baba Aparajith, Riley Meredith, Joshua Little, Adam Milne, Luke Wood, Blessing Muzarabani, Naveen ul Haq, Sikandar Raza

Purse - INR 20.55 cr || Slots left - 9 || Overseas slots left - 3

Existing squad breakdown

Top-order batters: Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Dewald Brevis

Finishers: Tilak Varma, Tristan Stubbs, Tim David, Ramandeep Singh

Spinners: Kumar Kartikeya, Hrithik Shokeen,

Fast bowlers: Arshad Khan, Akash Madhwal, Jofra Archer, Jasprit Bumrah, Jason Behrendorff

Issues & Requirements

- A big issue for MI in their last two editions were their domestic seamers behind Bumrah. In five seasons since 2018, outside of Bumrah and Hardik Pandya, the domestic Indian seamers have managed an aggregate of mere 59 overs between them and no bowler has picked more than six wickets. MI have let go of both Unadkat and Basil Thampi from 2022 leaving them with the likes of Ramandeep Singh, Akash Madhwal and Arjun Tendulkar in their pace department.

- MI did not have a big-ticket wrist spinner in their roster in IPL 2022 and it showed in the numbers. MI used the second-fewest overs of spin (27%, only above SRH's 22.1) and had the worst ER (8.33). Kumar Karthikeya with his mix of wrist and finger spin is the only established matchup spinner against right-handers with their roster having as many as four off-spinners including part-timers (Hrithik Shokeen, Stubbs, David, and Tilak Varma).

Possible Targets:Mayank Markande, Murugan Ashwin, Shahbaz Nadeem, Sandeep Sharma, Ishant Sharma, Shivam Mavi, Tabraiz Shamsi, Adam Zampa, Adil Rashid, Ishan Porel, Sikandar Raza

Purse - INR 32.30 cr || Slots left - 9 || Overseas slots left - 3

Existing squad breakdown

Top-order batters: Shikhar Dhawan, Jonny Bairstow, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Prabhsimran Singh

Finishers: Liam Livingstone, Jitesh Sharma, Shahrukh Khan

Allrounders:Atharva Taide, Raj Bawa, Rishi Dhawan

Spinners: Rahul Chahar, Harpreet Brar

Fast bowlers: Arshdeep Singh, Baltej Dhanda, Kagiso Rabada, Nathan Ellis

Issues & Requirements

- Shahrukh Khan has had two middling seasons with PBKS, and they would need some backup in this department should he not turn it around. Jitesh Sharma was a revelation last year and had a good SMAT 2022/23 hitting 224 runs at a SR of 175.

- Having released a few seamers, PBKS need some backup domestic options in the pace department.

- There could be a case of PBKS relying heavily on overseas batters and as a result, they would look to add some domestic batting talent to their roster.

Possible Targets:Sandeep Sharma, Ishant Sharma, Shivam Mavi, Ben Stokes, Sam Curran, Sikandar Raza, Jason Holder, Nicholas Pooran, Heinrich Klaasen, Virat Singh, KS Bharat, Mayank Agarwal, Mandeep Singh

Purse - INR 13.20 cr || Slots left - 9 || Overseas slots left - 4

Existing squad breakdown

Top-order batters: Jos Buttler, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson, Devdutt Padikkal, Dhruv Jurel

Finishers: Shimron Hetmyer, Riyan Parag

Allrounders: Ravichandran Ashwin

Spinners:Yuzvendra Chahal, KC Cariappa

Fast bowlers: Prasidh Krishna, Trent Boul, Obed McCoy, Navdeep Saini, Kuldip Yadav, Kuldeep Sen

Issues & Requirements

- Royals rode on the back of the quality of Buttler and Chahal to overcome their depth issues in both departments in the run to the finals. None of their top five batters could bowl and of their five bowlers only Ashwin had any pedigree with the bat often resulting in him promoted up the order to extend their batting lineup.

- Of the five overseas players they released, four were seam bowling all rounders and this is the area which is going to entice most interest from Royals in the auction. Ben Stokes does have unfinished business with the Royals but their purse suggests that a reunion is almost impossible.

- They would also love a charismatic overseas batter as a backup option for Jos Buttler.

Possible Targets:Cameron Green, Josh Philippe, Phil Salt, Jason Holder, Shakib Al Hasan, Daryl Mitchell, David Wiese, Daniel Sams, Sikandar Raza, Dasun Shanaka, Wayne Parnell

Existing squad breakdown

Top-order batters: Faf du Plessis, Virat Kohli, Anuj Rawat, Rajat Patidarm, Finn Allen

Finishers: Glenn Maxwell, Dinesh Karthik, Mahipal Lomror, Suyash Prabhudessai

Allrounders: David Willey, Shahbaz Ahmed

Spinners: Wanindu Hasaranga, Karn Sharma

Fast bowlers: Josh Hazlewood, Harshal Patel, Siddharth Kaul, Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep

Issues & Requirements

- RCB's requirements would be to fill in the backup options. A backup left-arm batter and a left-arm seamer could be in their radar.

- They will be banking on Dinesh Karthik to repeat his 2022 heroics which made them the dangerous side they were at the death overs. If things go wrong, they will need backups in this section having released Sherfane Rutherford.

- With IPL returning to the traditional home and away basis, RCB will be scheduled seven games at Chinnaswamy and would need a gun death bowler with the short boundaries in play. Hazlewood, Siraj and Akash Deep all had a poor season at the death in IPL 2022 while the effectiveness of Harshal's cutters at the venue is another headache they would need to find an answer to.

Possible Targets:Virat Singh, Tymal Mills, Andrew Tye, Naveen ul Haq, Jaydev Unadkat, Arzan Nagaswalla, Vishnu Vinod, Harry Brook, Rassie van der Dussen, Shakib Al Hasan

Purse - INR 42.25 cr || Slots left - 13 || Overseas slots left - 4

Existing squad breakdown

Top-order batters: Rahul Tripathi, Abhishek Sharma, Aiden Markram

Finishers: Glenn Phillips, Abdul Samad

Allrounders: Washington Sundar

Fast bowlers: Marco Jansen, T Natarajan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Kartik Tyagi, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Umran Malik

Issues & Requirements

- Kane Williamson has been released leaving them a spot at the top of the order. SRH have been traditionally reliant on a top order accumulator (Warner & Williamson) in their peak between 2016 and 2020.

- SRH bowled just 60 overs of spin across IPL 2022 - the fewest among all teams - which formed just 22.1% of the total overs. SRH lacked a gun wrist spinner in the squad and relied on Umran Malik's pace for wickets in the middle overs.

- Having released Pooran and Shepherd combined with Abdul Samad's middling returns, SRH would be looking for a finisher/all-rounder. Sundar's recent batting form in white ball cricket augurs well while Phillips' inclusion could boost the middle order. Ben Stokes and Cameron Green are definite options.

- The release of Pooran has meant SRH is without a regular wicketkeeper. Phillips is an option but his off-spin (though will be minimal given Sundar's presence) and outfield skills should ideally keep him far from the gloves.

Possible Targets:Ben Stokes, Josh Philippe, Phil Salt, N Jagadeesan, Sikandar Raza, Travis Head, Joe Root, Rilee Rossouw, Cameron Green, Shakib Al Hasan, Adil Rashid, Adam Zampa, Murugan Ashwin
