Priya was nervous, an notion she was not familiar with. Her life had no place for nervousness when she stepped up to earn for a family of four, yet new beginnings and unfamiliar situations had her palms sweating.

Ram could sense her apprehension and tried to make light of the situation- "Mrs John and you will have a lot in common- both teachers and a glare to get people shaking in their boots." He chuckled.

Her dry side-eye shut him up very quickly- his jokes never landed on her, or anyone for that matter, he thought afterwards.

After the usual exchange of pleasantries and how are you's, his fifth standard teacher, with her sharp bespectacled eyes and tight-lipped smile ushered the newly married couple into her house.

Both Priya and Ram were tired of these house-visits. They were an unconventional couple, both having married for their families, and conventional questions like 'what do you like about each other' leaves them very awkward.

The rides back home were usually very quiet and the air full of contemplation - 'was this marriage a correct step?' they both wondered,

His teacher's house-help brought over a tray full of snacks and glasses of water, and before he could utter a word, she asked 'Yeh filtered haina?'

A small smile passed his lips, a smile his teacher took note of. Someone cared enough for him to ask that question. Maybe this marriage was not that bad of an idea, he thought.

2. Baarish

He sighed as he checked his watch for the umpteenth time - he was late for dinner. He honked impatiently, cursing under his breath - but Mumbai rains had brought the city to a standstill.

It was almost 6 months since his wedding. A thing that was unimaginable to him a couple months prior now became a habit- dinners and conversation with Priya.
Dinners were now a daily thing - a time, he realised, he looked forward to. It was comforting to go back to an usual face and talk about all mundane things in life. What was once a lonely half-an-hour affair inn his life was now a space he found solace in.

He took out his cell phone to text her, smiling slightly as he imagined her voice in his head had he not texted her-"I was waiting for you Mr. Kapoor, inform toh kar lete na"

'Will be late for dinner, stuck in traffic cause of rains.' He texted her.

He hated the rains he once loved because of her - even if just for a little while.

.

.

Sipping on hot tea, she looked at a sight that was quite familiar to her- yet with an unusual addition.

Her entire family was spread out on the balcony of her house. For a family who enjoyed pakoras and tea anytime they wanted, the rains were but just an excuse.

Her eyes darted to her husband cracking up over a lame joke Sandy made. He somehow fit just right in, making a space for himself in everyone's heart. And Ram loved every moment of it - he was basking in all the attention and love he received from his wife's family.

That sight made Priya's lips curve up slightly.

She started loving the rains she once hated because of him - even if just for a little while.

3. Musings

A familiar sight greeted Priya as she looked upon a girl in raincoat trying to start her scooter in the pouring rain - she was that girl a month ago. Earlier, she had to brave the downpour and Mumbai's traffic armed with her trusted raincoat and rainboots, now she had the luxury to stay completely dry in a luxury sedan.

Her heart lurched slightly as she thought of her family - heavy rains at Sood residency meant putting bucket under the leaking roof and plastic on top of cupboards.

She felt hot under the collar despite the AC being on full blast.

Life really is unpredictable, she mused.

Wow!

These snippets're so well written &delved into Ram & Pri.

The special mention of each of them behaving like the other even it for mere moments (for the rain) is so subtle.

4. Small Pleasures Of Life.

Her eyes glittered as she held the dainty pendant between her fingers. Turning it over under the soft yellow light, she pretended to examine the stone, but her heart was pounding fast. She had fallen in love with the small sapphire.

She thought of the clothes she could pair with it- everything she had paled in comparison. The jewelry was by no means flashy -Priya wouldn't have picked it out otherwise. But to her, it was nothing short of the Hope Diamond.

Sighing in admiration, she walked towards the counter in a trance- a brief minute of sadness overcame her as the cashier took her prized possession to be packed.

Priya smiled proudly as she handed over her card to the cashier, she couldn't help but feel a little overwhelmed. She did not, for once in her life, bargain.

Ram was watching this affair unfurl from afar, a small smile grazing his lips. She never shopped for herself, and when she did, she never splurged.

But watching her gift herself something from the money she won from her PHD research, was a show he thoroughly enjoyed.

His wife deserved every pleasure of life.
