Celebrities - social responsibility?

That SRK ad on paan? I think it's paan, I don't know any other word to describe it.😆 Anyways, that ad seems to have incited all kinds of reactions from people and it got me thinking about celebrities and some of their attempts to propagate social messages, whether it be through insta, or twitter, or ads, or any other public platform.

What do you think of celebrities trying to make a statement and spread positive messages on various public platforms but doing a complete 180 flip and contradicting themselves with their movie/ad choices?

Most of the celebrities, at one point or another, might have been a part of something in the past that can be seen as socially problematic today. Or they could be engaging in ethically questionable ads even today. For example, fair and lovely ads and BLM posts on insta at the same time look hypocritical at best but can we hold it against them? Does that take away from their credibility or should people not take them seriously to begin with?

I personally don't look up to them for social messages and even when they do, I roll my eyes a little cuz I see everything they do as a PR exercise of sorts. I found Deepika's "repeat after me" chants very opportunistic and distasteful the week of SSR's death too. What are your views on celebrities and the social causes they take up every now and then?

The problem is too many people have no socially responsible qualities themselves and blame celebs. 😆

For me it is simple, if a celeb doesn't lecture, he/she can do whatever he/she wants and I don't care. But if they lecture and commits contradictory actions happens, I make sure, i annoy the shit out of their fans.

Well people do follow them and that is why advertisements hire celebrities for promotion. I am sure there might be some who would try Gutka just cos SRK is endorsing it 😆

It's only fair ... if you preach, you better be practicing what you preach too. 😆

At the end of the day, celebrities have something to sell. Therefore, I neither trust them nor take them seriously.

When it comes to BW, I look to them for entertainment, and not gyaan on how I should be leading my life. 😆

One doesn't have to be enticed by the celebrities to be buying what they sell.

There is a very simple reason they get paid the big bucks - because It Works!

Yes. Sales Will increase. You might not even be conscious of that fact.

My take is celebrities should stay away from stuff like tobacco which has been proven to take lives. Btw, SRK has already done cringey stuff like Fair & Handsome. Former should be no no, later depends on your antaraatma ki aavaaz.

Now that I have a kid I get it. Ill take responsibility for him and be his role model. Rest of world I don't care 😆

IMHO I don't need these celebs to be my role models just their own kids. Like Aamir/SRK have 2/3 kids each. Bhai has no kids so he doesnt need to be anyones role model. But he is a hero still 😆

@bold: 🤣 I'm glad you have no qualms admitting that Salman is far from being anyone's role model. Oh boy ... these are the times I live for ... at least on the forum.😆

I'm sure your sense of responsibility went from 0 to 100 overnight... I think parents are role models even when they're not trying to be cuz kids are picking everything up like sponge balls. Good luck on that front! :)
