Great script, perfect execution.

Plus India - pakistan plot

Plus we can't take away this from Alia that she did a decent job.

All three. Plus the KJo factor. He is a smart producer who can see what's the flavor of the day. He knew how to add enough commercial content to make the movie palatable to the general public. Look at the way Meghna Gulzar faltered with Chhapaak without his support.
