All reviews seem so different from each other on both extremes.

Bhoot part 1 was slightly above average. 3/5.
Nothing pathbreaking but not bad either. It makes for a good one time watch. Some scenes were executed quite nicely and it has a coherent story that is also wrapped up. Going in I thought that since it’s part one, it’ll only be jumpscares with no conclusion but they do provide a storyline. However, the reasoning wrt to why the haunting starts or why the spirit is doing it wasn't that strong or interesting. A few jump scares are good though and Vicky’s character has been given a motivation to do what he does in the 2nd half - it doesn't feel forced.

I love Vicky but this genre is not my thing....I will never understand why people deliberately subject themselves to horror....

I think the general problem with indian horror flicks is that we start the chills and creepiness in a good way but it never has that high end climax and resolution. It’s like they put in all the scares and suspense but then have a flimsy storyline to conclusion, the script writers seem to get stuck on giving good reasoning. In the last two decades the only ones I liked were the first Raaz and the first 1920. Of that Raaz was based on an English movie but still it was made well, even with all the Bollywood like narrative and music in the beginning. Vaastu Shastra and RGV’s first Phoonk were decent too. Haven’t watched Urmila’s Bhoot but It was appreciated back then.

Having said that I will watch Bhoot (the new one) once it’s streaming.

Opening Report: Shubh Mangal Pretty Good - Bhoot Average

Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan took a pretty good opening of around 20-25% but it is Mahashivratri which has taken it here and without the holiday factor its a very average start. The film can be the biggest opening day of Ayushmann Khurana as it can surpass the 9.43 crore nett of Dream Girl depending on evening collections.

The problem is that to get to the Dream Girl it is depending on an evening push and that too on a holiday when that evening push may not be as good as a normal day. In real value the film has no chance of being at the level of Dream Girl or even Bala.

The film is the second in the series of Shubh Mangal films but the first film was hardly liked by the audience though it was successful due to a low budget. The difference now is that Ayushmann Khurana is more popular than at the time of Shubh Mangal Saavdhan but it is still not sure to be his biggest opening day despite a holiday.

The last two Ayushmann Khurana films have opened to around the 9 crore nett mark and this should go above that and become his first double digit opener due to Mahashivratri. The fair value number may not be as much as Dream Girl or Bala but that remains to be seen where the Friday numbers lands.

The film is a franchise film of Shubh Mangal Saavdhan and that film did pretty well at the box office but it was not appreciated in a way be  it on in release or post release that it deserved a franchise. The opening day numbers will be coming due to Mahashivratri and not because the first film holds value with the audience. The fair value number could be lower than Dream Girl and Bala which would show the actual value of the franchise is less than the other recent releases of Ayushmann Khurana.

Bhoot had an average start of around 15-20% but again this has come on a holiday and take that out then the opening is below the mark. The film has opened better in areas where horror opens better like Maharashtra, West Bengal and Nizam / Andhra and here collections are better than Shubh Mangal Saavdhan in the smaller multiplexes.

The problem this film will face is that the genre has to open as it finds it tough to sustain for long. This film has a chance of that evening push as the horror is more the metro audience rather than the mass audience. The plus is that its a very low cost film but it has to sustain for the talent in the film to benefit.

Early Estimates: Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan - Bhoot

Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan has put up good first day numbers of 9.25-9.50 crore nett as per early estimates but its due to the holiday and the real value probably goes down to 7 or maybe even less. It could be the highest Ayushmann Khurana opener but that will depend where the final numbers land in the morning. Dream Girl has the best opening day at 9.43 crore nett.

The film has done best in Delhi NCR with collections looking to be around 2.50 crore nett followed by East Punjab which is around 1 crore nett. Mumbai circuit is just decent as the circuit will be only a little higher than Delhi / UP. Gujarat / Saurashtra is low with collections less than Malang despite it being Mahashivratri.

Basically its a good number but it should have been better due to the holiday as there will not be huge growth on Saturday like other films in this zone.

Bhoot has recorded average first day numbers of 5-5.25 crore nett but again due to the holiday and relea value is 4 crore nett or even less. This genre has to open well to go anywhere and its not really happened though the number looks decent due to the holiday.

The film has fared better in mass pockets of Maharashtra, CP Berar, Nizam / Andhra, West Bengal and Odisha due to the horror factor but the horror is not the type for these audiences so it could be difficult to sustain in these pockets. Again like Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan this film will not grow a lot on Saturday due to the holiday factor.

First Day: Shubh Mangal Zyaada Saavdhan - Bhoot

Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan had good first day collections of 9-9.25 crore nett but they came on Mahashivratri which takes the shine off the collections as real value goes down towards the 7 crore nett range. The collections are pretty much in the range of Bala and Dream Girl which were 9.32 crore and 9.43 crore nett respectively. It is the the third highest opening day for and Ayushmann Khurana starrer but should have been his first double digit opening day due to Mahashivratri if it really performed on day one.

The film has done well in Delhi / UP and pretty well in East Punjab while other circuits are just decent but is has managed the third best opening day of 2020 after Tanhaji - The Unsung Warrior and Love Aaj Kal. Its a healthy first day number and if we take real value as 7 crore nett and the film can show good Saturday growth from the real value it will be set for a good weekend of 30 crore nett plus which is a good result for the film. Last week saw Love Aaj Kal crash huge from a holiday benefit on day one but it will not happen here.

Bhoot had a decent number of 5 crore nett and this film will better in places like Nizam / Andhra and Bengal but the real value of around 3.75-4 crore nett is on the lower side for this genre. The numbers should have been a little higher due to the holiday. Again it will depend on where the film can go on Saturday and it needs to do more business than Friday to stay in the race. There will not be huge growth but there are chances the film can go a little higher than Friday.

The film has recorded very poor collections in North multiplexes where Shubh Mangal Zyaada Saavdhan is probably doing treble the business of Bhoot.

I would say good start for both films.

Budget of shubh is 65 and bhoot is 30-40.
