Birthday Cake

Babita took a deep breath so that she could steady her shaky hands. She wanted to apply the icing quickly but she didn't want to make a mess out of the job either.

She took a quick glance around all the scattered dirty bowls and utensils and reddened. She'll clean those up later. Right now, her main priority was to finish the cake and nothing else.

Adding the last dollop of icing, she took a step back and examined her work. It looked good to her so far. Putting the icing bag down, she picked up the cake and twirled it around to further inspect it. It wasn't as great as she wanted it to be but it would have to do for now. She'll make another proper one tomorrow.

Carefully carrying the cake, she descended the stairs. She thought twice of wearing long suits in the future when she almost tripped over the last few steps. Landing on the ground floor with a grand smile, Babita hurried into the bedroom.

She was dismayed upon seeing the lights already turned off but she should have known better. It was nearly midnight and Hanuman had to leave for work early the next morning. She carefully made her way to the night side table and gingerly placed the cake on it. Closing the door, she went back to Hanuman's side and crouched before him. Shaking him, she called out his name. He stirred for a brief moment but he didn't fully awake.

"Uthiye na." Babita called out again, shaking him a little more.

Hanuman blinked with deep sleep residing in his eyes.

"Ke hua?" He asked, his voice really low.

"Woh," Babita answered, "Cake katna tha ji."

Hanuman perked up. "Iss waqt?"

Sitting up, he turned on the light and took a look at the time on his watch.

"Maan na parega aap ki timing ko. Baara bajne wale hai aur ibb aap ko yaad aaya ki cake bhi katna hai."

"Aap thaane maat maro aur kisko." Babita urged, pushing Hanuman over so that there was room for her to sit beside him.

Picking up the cake, she held it before him.

"Woh," She began shyly, "Aaj Minnie ka birthday tha na. Toh meine uske liye cake banaya tha. Hum dono ne toh pehle kaat liya tha aur jo bach gaya tha woh apne dost ko liye le gayi."

Hanuman with his hands folded in his lap, and a smile on his face, asked, "Toh yeh kiske liye banaya?"

Babita hung her head and blushed. "Ji, aap ke liye." Her lips quivered as she answered.

She furrowed her eyebrows when Hanuman held his hand out to her. Gesturing to him, she silently asked him what he was asking for.

He chuckled, "Mein katunga kaise?"

Embarrassed at her folly, Babita paled. Straightening up, she was about to get up, but Hanuman held her back.

"Churi toh laane do."

"Agar aap jaisi tez khataar saath mein ho, toh churi ke karegi?" Hanuman spoke lowly, inching his way closer to Babita.

Blushing, she laughed and leaned into his touch. Minute shivers ran down her body when he nuzzled up to her and began kissing her lightly on the cheek, making his way down to her neck.

"Cake." She reminded him, moving it away so that he didn't ruin her hard work by running his hand through it.

Keeping his head close to hers, he whispered, "Toh khila di jiye."

Babita's eyes widened at the request.

"Yeh kuch zyaada ni ho jayega?" She asked quietly, looking deep into his eyes.

She saw his answer in his intense, firm eyes. He slowly shook his head. Unable to hold his gaze, Babita looked down at the cake. Carefully, she swiped a bit of the icing from the top and held it out for him. Keeping his eyes steady on her, he bent down and ate the frosting. It was a wholly different feeling for Babita, having his tongue swirl around her finger. She knew he was moving slowly on purpose, wanting to set a quiet fire within her.

Swallowing the frosting, he said, "Mango."

Babita nodded, keeping her eyes on him. "Mera favorite."

"Aur kya favorite hai aap ka?" He asked with intent.

Babita briefly glanced down to his lips before looking back up at him. Putting the cake back on the table, she rushed into him for a kiss, preferring to show him rather than tell.
