I read that it was foam cake, not actual cake and permission was taken from the people before throwing the cake.

Where did you read this?

It's Steve Aoki's tradition. All the people there to see him are aware of it. He asked Priyanka, Nick and Joe to do it because they were there so they did. It's not something they do but just did it for Steve. If you have a problem with it go complain to Steve Aoki.
