Actress Saumya Tandon, who is famous as the onscreen character of Anita Bhabhi in TV show "Bhabhi Ji Ghar Par Hai", is known for her glamorous image both on and off screen.
Saumya is not only an excellent actress but also a designer as well. In an exclusive interview with Timesofindia.com, Saumya talks about 'Bhabhiji Ghar Par Hai', her journey on television, her dream role and her hidden marriage.Q: How has 'Bhabhiji Ghar Par Hai' changed your life and career?
A: I never wanted to do daily soaps. I was happy hosting shows and a fiction show was out of vision for me. I don't relate to saas-bahu shows or mythological shows at all. I have never said no in my career but when the channel offered me 'Bhabhiji..' I rejected it for 9 months before saying yes. It has definitely changed me. I have learnt a lot during this tenure. Also, fiction shows take a lot of time, so yes life has changed in that case.
Saumya is glad about doing this show. She further said that she relates to the character of Anita Bhabhi. She is not a shy person and is dominating, romantic and naughty.Q: You recently turned a designer as well. Is it something you always wanted to do?
A: Not really. It is not possible to source clothes all the time and I realized I was in a fix. So, I asked the producers to trust me and I went ahead to style all my clothes. I do have a team though for this, but till now I have designed around 200 outfits and I enjoy doing that.Q: The show has been running for long now. Did you ever feel it has got monotonous?
A: Well, not yet. The day I will feel this, it will be trouble time for me. It is fun to play Anita Bhabhi in the show. In comedy shows, you have the liberty to experiment. So, in one episode I become Jodha and in another I am a boy. There is something new happening every day. But yes, I do question this to myself and it feels scary thinking if I get bored of it.Q: Comedy is a difficult genre. What challenges did you face with popular theatre artists and comedians Aasif Sheikh and Rohitashv Gaud?
A: I had not done comedy ever. So yes, this was my first time. It was difficult eventually but I worked hard. My character of Anita Bhabhi is not that loud, so it is easy to play but difficult to miss. Anita is a very non typical naughty Indian bhabhi. She is bold, she makes her husband dance to her tunes, she asks him to role play when he is romantic. So yes, the character is colorful, bold and powerful. It was a challenge for me but I guess I pulled it off well. I try to be real to make Anita look real.Q: Your role is still remembered in 'Jab We Met', any film in store?
A: I did get a lot of offers. But then Dance India Dance happened and I was busy hosting shows. I was so engrossed in television that I hardly got time to say yes to a film. Earlier movies were usually high budget but times have changed now. There are new films, new directors, new content and I would love to sign one when I feel this is meant for me.Q: What's your dream role?
A: "Hazaaron khwahishen aisi ke har khwahish pe dam nikle; Bahut niklay mere armaan, lekin phir bhi kam nikle" quoted Saumya. There are so many roles, so many things I still have to do. I have not even touched the tip of the iceberg. I am so not there yet but yes, I haven't lost hope.Q: Why are you so guarded about your personal life? Are you happily married?
A: I find it risky talking about personal life. I am a private person and don't like to show off about things in my personal life to people.
When asked about her honeymoon and husband, Saumya replied saying she absolutely enjoyed the winters in Switzerland and she is in a good and happy phase right now.
