Raghav mused as he gently shut the book. He stroked a hand over the smooth expanse of the back cover. It was an interesting read that his friend had recommended. He chuckled quietly. He never thought of himself to be a romantic but then again he never did allow himself to venture his thoughts into that field before. Being so bogged down with academic studies, he had never gotten the chance to read for mere pleasure.
But last week he gave it a shot. He had to if he had wanted to keep some semblance of his sanity. He had been hanging by the thread for the past couple of months, just waiting for the last shoe to drop so that he could have a break down and put an end to his newly budding career.
He was ever so grateful for his friend Nancy to suggest he take up a hobby to distract his mind. He had the option to engage in "manly" activities such as rock climbing, bicycling, or even hitting the gym. But all those activities involved too much excursion from his side. Too much time and effort to be put in that will only end in him being sore for days.
He had been at the convenience store late one night to do some minor last minute grocery shopping. With a basket full of milk cartons, a loaf of bread, and ramen noodles, he had stood in front of the book stand, chewing his flavorless gum. The covers hadn't been that interesting. Half naked bodies, big gothic fonts, the back blurbs speaking of forbidden love manifesting in dark and stormy nights. He had been so confused. How could anyone let alone women find any of these stories remotely interesting? Weren't they all merely the same story presented in different packaging? He had walked away from the stand and paid for his few items.
To break his cloudy confusion, Nancy had all but thrown a book into his lap.
Seriously Raghav. How can you possibly pass a judgment before you even get to know something?
He had raised a brow at that point for she did have a point.
So here he was. Sitting on an empty metal bleacher underneath the grey clouds, having just finished his first romantic novel.
It wasn't the best of writing but it had gotten him to start thinking about love in general.
What is it? How do you even know you are in love? Do you wait until it passes and then wallow in its absence? You can't possibly run on the notion of love at first sight. What about all the theories of infatuations, crushes and idealizations? It was a very fine line between those and what people consider to be true love. What even is true love? Soulmates, destiny, fate, is that even real or is it merely a romanticized idea that has been created to give people hope and add color to their lives?
He took out his vibrating phone from his pocket and pulled up the text message.
Nancy: Bro, where you at?
Raghav: Just doing some reading.
Nancy: Omg, did you finish? What did you think?? Tell me everythign!! Wasn't the ending just amazing!
Raghav: haha, will be home in a few. will talk then
Nancy: alright, alright. but make it fast. Got a pot full of hot pasta and it ain't gonna wait ;)
Raghav: dude! dont' you even dare begin without!!
Raghav put his book away in his satchel and ran down the bleachers and towards his apartment as fast as he can.
Sorry love, you're gonna have to wait. Have a hot dinner waiting for me tonight.
