This was so beautiful Sru!! How is it that you weave a story which is relatively known to everyone yet it feels new every time that one reads it!!

I loved the way you have charted Kodai's journey from a young bloom to something more divine and cosmic...something that has existed always. I really loved it specially the ending note when Lord Vishnu is happy at being adorned with the garland that Kodai had worn previously!

P.S. I am largely unaware of Sounth-Indian folk lores and tales. It would be nice if you could mark it clearly what the names and different chanting means. Like Emperum, Kodai's adoptive father's various names and Kodai's names, if put out clearly is only when I can understand them all.

Hi all :)
After a long time, i am back with a new chapter, and that too on Andal's birthday :)
Do read and review :)
The part in blue is the explanation of the song.
P.S. It is kind of short 😳

THE FIRST PAAMALAI

Little five year old Kodai sat with her mother and all the other ladies of the village. She loved this time of the day, especially with the month of Margazhi about to start in two days. The ladies in the village will gather to talk about Emperuman's various avataras, and the meaning behind them. She especially loved Rama and Krishna avataras. The love behind the two avataras she could clearly see.

That day was on her Kannan. Excited, little Kodai ran to the area where all the women meet, her mother laughing affectionately at her. All she had to do was to hear the word Kanna. And she was the first person there to listen to the stories she already knew.

Today though, the discussion was on how the Gopis reached Krishna, and how His wives also did. Andal was awestruck at the stories. The Gopis did Katyayani pooja to marry her Lord. His wives Rukmini and Satyabhama did the same. But at the same time, she also knew that all of them prayed to Kanna Himself as well. The Gopis were known for their Bhakti, as were His eight chief wives.

That night, a silent Kodai went back home, much to the surprise of her mother. Kodai was usually bouncing around after listening to the stories of her Kanna. But today, little Kodai seemed deep in thought.

Kodai ate a silent dinner, much to the worry of her parents, who knew that she usually kept talking about Emperuman.

That night, the little girl couldn't sleep. She kept wondering how to reach her Kanna. What should she do to marry her Kanna? Unknown to her, her eyes closed. And that night, she dreamt of Kanna, and dancing with Him.

The next day morning, Kodai woke up, eyes sparkling. She had some friends to recruit. Before that though, she rushed to her Kanna, and touched His feet, as if asking for His blessings to attain Him. After that, she ran to find her friends, and tell them what she was thinking.

It was the first day of Margazhi.

Andal opened her eyes. Her excitement showed all over her.

She looked at her Kanna.

"Kanna", she whispered. "Bless me that I am successful in what I want to do"

Saying thus, she touched her head to His Lotus feet.

In Ksheer Sagar...

He who is called Shantakaram, Emperumanae, Kodai's Kanna, smiled, and said, "My love, you have been born to show the world how to attain me. You were chosen for it as the voice of a woman, of a mother is the easiest for a child to follow. You will always succeed, my love"

Kodai walked to the end of the street. Decked in a simple pavadai, with a bun on her left, and flowers around the bun, she looked verily like swayam Mahalakshmi. In her soft enchanting voice, clear as the twang of a bowstring, she sang,

Margazhi Thingal, Madi Niraintha Nanaala

Neerada Poodhumir, Podhumilo Ner Izhaiyeer

Seermal Kumai Paadi, Selva Chirumeergal

Koorver Kodunthozhilan, Nanadagopan Kumaran,

Erantha Kannir, Yashodai Ilam Singam,

Karmeni Sengan, Kadhir Madhiyam Pol Mugathan

Narayanane, Namakke Parai Tharuvan,

Paror Pugazha, Panindhelo Rembavai

It's Margazhi month, moon replete and the day is proper
We shall bathe, us girls of Ayarpadi
Will you move out? You wealthy adorn'd fine jewels;
Narayana, son of relentless Nandagopala,
Whose job wielding a sharp spike ever alert and
The lion cub of Yasoda with gracious eyes
And the lad with dark complexion, handsome eyes
And face sunny bright pleasant as moon
Sure shall grant us the desire soon
To the esteem of this earth as a boon;
Oblige, involve, listen and consider, our damsel.

Even as Andal sang this, her sweet, loving voice woke up all her sakhis, who came out, getting ready to bathe in the pond, decorate themselves, and go and pray to Lord Vatapatrasayee.

The girls all took off their clothes, placed them on the rock, and went into the pond to wash themselves.

NOTE:

These songs Andal sang out of love for the Lord were called Thirupaavai. There are 30 in total.

If you think I should explain the other Thirupaavais, please let me know.

I thought this will come only in Margazhi, so this was a surprise!
I love little Kodhai! And Margazhi Thingal on Aadi PooramπŸ‘( which I completely forgot about)

But then, how can you continue with Gopi Vastrapaharana Leela without the other 29?!
Like Andal has to wake up all the girls, go to Nandagopa's house, receive her Lord's grace, and then the leela!

So yeah all 30 pleaseπŸ˜†.

Beautiful, Shru! πŸ‘

My mother always sang the thirupaavai to my sister and me during Marghasira maasam, and explained the meaning.

I loved the story of Andal. We call her Goda devi.

This is beautiful. Especially the Thirupaavai,
Reminds me so much of Margazhi and the Thirupaavai playing on full volume.

About the writing. It was so lovely. I can literally feel the devotion and love emanating off Andal
