She wrote in an open letter: "It's disturbing to see the way Biharis have been portrayed in Hindi cinema."

Actress Neetu Chandra has taken offence to the portrayal of Biharis in Hindi cinema, particularly Alia Bhatt's character in the upcoming Udta Punjab.Chandra, who is from Bihar, feels that Bihar is often misrepresented. In the past she has taken on Chetan Bhagat, whose protagonist in Half Girlfriendhailed from Bihar and had trouble speaking in English.

She wrote in an open letter: "It's disturbing to see the way Biharis have been portrayed in Hindi cinema over the last few years, the recent example being Alia Bhatt's character from Udta Punjab and from whatever one understands from the promo of the film, director Abhishek Chaubey is guilty of strengthening the stereotype of Biharis by creating Bhatt's character the way it is, in Udta Punjab."

Neetu also added: "Unfortunately, almost all the films made by Prakash Jha, who also hails from Bihar, have always stereotyped Biharis showing them corrupt politicians, cops and gangsters and in his movies, Bihar was always exaggerated to be the most dangerous place to visit as his films showed only either kidnapping and robbery and murders not realising that he himself along with leading Bollywood actors (part of his films) are maligning the name of Bihar whose history has been the most richest in the world."

She added: "The first educational university was set up in Rajgir, near Nalanda (Bihar) and several respected religions including Jainism, Buddhism and Sikhism roots have developed in Bihar. Visionaries and scholars like Rajendra Prasad (first President of Republic of India), Ustad Bismillah Khan (Shehnai maestro), Bhikhari Thakur, Vatsyayana, Gonu Jha, Kunwar Singh, Maulana Mazhrul Haq, Seewosagar Ramgoolam, Aryabhatt who invented zero among several hundreds of stalwarts of the world belong to Bihar."

"So why none of the makers from Bihar and outside Bihar have ever made stories and films on these stories? Because they think that they will keep making fun of Biharis in their films and TV programs and no one will say anything against them." Neetu adds. "Stop stereotyping Bihar because you have seen Bihar through your ears not through your eyes," Neetu concludes.

BW stereotypes almost all states.Do you think all South Indians eat noodles with curd/yogurt? Or all South Indians are Madrasi?  Punjabis are all loud and irritating. Atleast Bengalis get to be the creative lot and shown in good light.Edited by CuttingChai - 7 years ago

Thank You...yes...non -Madrasi South Indian here...the one time they even showed my native place Mangalore on a TV show as the home of the heroine, they made sure she was still a Tamilian ..like what even😆

Its pointless, everyone is stereotyped.

ok..i agree bollywood stereotypes a lot..not just one culture or one land or one religion.
but multiple ones..but what is stereotypical about alia bhatt's character in udta punjab?..i know two things about the character..that she is a migrant labourer from bihar..what is stereotypical about that?it is the truth..there are many migrant labourers from bihar in punjab..second thing i know is that she too becomes a drug addict like many in punjab..that is a reality too, right?many people with drug issues in punjab..?so where is thw stereotyping?what am i missing?

This is irrelevant but it's weird that out of all the girls in Garam Masala, the least prettiest one got the most work and the prettiest one (Nargis Bagheri) faded into oblivion. Edited by Hazardous - 7 years ago

I don't blame her...although BW is stereotypical about all states they are really harsh on Biharis...not a single movie where they are shown in good light..they are mostly shown abusing and doing all wrong works..and this goes for UPites also..
