I always thought that God bharai is a ceremony when someone is pregnant with their first child and they hold a ceremony around the 7th or 8th month of pregnancy?
Is this custom before wedding called Godbharai in just Northern part of India? (Banaras etc.)

Actually in Gujarat here we call that pre-marriage ceremony as " Gaud-Dhana" means Engagement sort of stuff generally called as Roka Ceremony in North..!!

But in Banaras they call it GodhBharai which sounds weird

Got this from some website and it seems reliable..!!

In the Indian subcontinent, it is a tradition to hold a Godh Bharai ceremony in Hindus, basically, on two occasions. One is before a wedding and the second is in the seventh month of pregnancy of an expectant lady. In the first case, the Goad Bharai marks the ceremony in which the family members of the groom officially accept a girl as the daughter of their family. The entire ceremony is conducted by females and male members are not allowed to attend it. Understand...in Bengal we call this ceremony "Ashirbaad", where elders bless the bride and groom with jewellery, fruits sweets etc from both sides of the family. The 5th and 7th month pregnancy celebration is called "Shaadh" where first the mil and then the mother feeds the mother to be with her favourites and so do relatives.

God bharai is ceremony for girls side for two times

Before marriage
After marriage

Before Marraige : girl is accepting her Upcoming family as their family (Husband as a child )
After marraiage : Taking relationship to the next level what she has promised beore marriage . Acceptance of new parwarishq
Godh means Lap bahrai means accept : She is accepting her husband as a Child

Even I was under the impression that this ritual is conducted for a woman in the advanced month of pregnancy in North India. Thanks for enlightening me that it is also a custom followed before marriage as an acceptance of a bride to be from the her laws.

It is overwhelming to think that there are a multitude of such rituals and traditions followed in diverse ways in every nook and corner of our vast and wonderful country. Each state has its unique style of celebrating life and happiness and people of different regions have so much to learn from each other. That is why I find my country so beautiful..😊

Thanks Akki for explaining this. I too am from Gujarat and know about Gor-dhana, but Godbharai seemed a bit odd for pre-wedding ceremony.
