"It's actually hilarious, they pretty much all hover around you for your attention-" Virat raised his voice to a false soprano, "Viren Vadhera, right? You're new here, want me to show you around? Oh, Viren, do you have an extra pen? You can come sit beside me, if you want." He switched to his regular tone, "And then there's you, like," a low baritone, "No, thanks, I'm fine."
"My voice isn't that deep," Viren was almost amused.
Virat continued, ignoring him, "They aren't sure whether they want to hate you or take you. The superficial ones don't care much about personality, so they'll like you, alright-"
"Thanks."
"On the other hand, the intelligent ones are going to do their best to make you a social outcast, if you keep this up," Virat warned good-naturedly.
"It's not like I'm trying to make myself visible or invisible," Viren protested grumpily.
"Bro, it's hard for you to be invisible when you're, I quote half the girls who've seen you, so damn fine' and who have asked me all sorts of questions regarding your dating life-"
"Hell. What did you tell them?"
"That you've always had the ladies after you, but you're looking beyond superficiality. That's the truth."
Viren heaved a sigh of relief, "I was worried for a moment."
"You should be worried!' Virat shook his head at him, "You can't be invisible when you're attractive and rich. But, if you keep on pushing people away, they're going to think you're cocky. Bad cocky."
Viren looked at him, nonplussed.
Virat added as an afterthought, "I'm good cocky."
A few girls passing by giggled. "I didn't mean it like that," Virat mused, "But-"
"No need to explain yourself," Viren hastily interrupted, "And I don't need the lecture either. I'm not here for my non-existent love life, you know that. And the reason I'm pushing the girls away is because they're a freakin' stampede."
Virat laughed at him, "Most guys would be happy about that."
"Not me. It makes it pretty damn difficult to make it to class on time," Viren ran a hand through his hair ruefully.
"Okay, okay, so you like them quiet, gentle, not-too-pushy, right?" Virat said casually, "Like that girl you spoke to at the party...Jeevika?"
Viren was startled at the mention of her name. He denied it, a little too quickly, "No, she's not my taste." If he said anything to Virat, the man would never let him live it down.
"Right," Virat drawled, "And why not? She seemed nice to me."
Viren racked his brains for some fault of hers. She wasn't the conventionally beautiful type, he knew. The average guy might call her cute, but not hot. It was in the way she dressed and carried herself. She had a certain gentility and innocence in expression, that was countered only by her full, bee-stung' lips. He wondered how they'd taste against his and then quickly banished the thought when he realized he'd been thinking about her for far too long and Virat's smirk was growing wider and more insufferable by the second.
"I don't think she likes me," he said finally, knowing there was no escape, and settled on the truth.
Virat looked bemused, "Why the hell not?"
"Maybe because you tried hitting on her little sister," Viren retorted.
"Oh right. But, I don't know, I apologized at the party and she seemed to like me well enough," Virat shrugged.
Viren said nothing, thinking over the possibilities. Was it possible he misunderstood her? She could merely be shy and quiet, like him.
Virat was smirking at him again, "You like her."
"I don't."
"You do."
"I- what are we, five? I said I don't like her and that's it," Viren growled, allowing no further discussion on the matter.
Virat changed the subject, "You order, I'll find a table," he motioned to the front of the hall, leaving him.
"I don't like her," Viren muttered to himself again. Even he knew, he wasn't being completely honest with himself.
Jeevika, Manvi, Manny and Charlotte had gotten their normal spot in the dining hall with some of their other friends. Manny had somehow managed to steal the seat usually reserved for her sister, a fact that neither Manvi nor Charlotte had failed to notice, judging by their identical grins. Jeevika was uncomfortable from the attention, making her far more jittery around him than she normally was; every accidental touch, a mortification.
And it was that rather quiet lunch, that was interrupted by the whirlwind that was Virat Vadhera who sat down beside Manvi with an easy smile, as though he was their old friend, "You don't mind if I sit with you, do I? Everywhere else is full."
"It's fine," Jeevika answered, ignoring Manvi's evil look sent her way.
"Are you on a diet?" Manvi eyed him.
"Nope, I left Viren to get the food," Viren stretched out his arms lazily.
"Of course," she muttered under her breath.
"Did you say something?" Virat asked cheerfully.
"Nothing," Manvi gave him a sickly sweet smile. Jeevika knew that smile. It boded no good.
Viren soon arrived, carrying two trays and looking between them as though he wasn't sure what to say. "We can leave, if you want?" he said curtly, looking at Jeevika.
She only shrugged, "You can stay if you want." She didn't like the tone of his voice. He obviously did not want to spend his time around them. She avoided his gaze and concentrated on her food, thereby missing Manvi's sly fingers emptying a packet of black pepper into Virat's Coke, which was conveniently placed right in front of her.
Viren took the seat across from Jeevika quietly and Virat took an unsuspecting sip of his drink, then spluttered.
"Are you feeling alright?" Manvi asked innocently, "Perhaps you need to go to the washroom?"
Jeevika noted the empty packet of pepper on the table and turned scolding eyes on her unrepentant sister. Virat, having overcome his choking fit, smiled at Manvi knowingly, "I think I'll be just fine," and with that, he grabbed her bottle of water and drank from it himself.
Viren couldn't stop himself from sneaking glances at Jeevika. Everything he'd said to Virat simply died in his head when he looked at her. Yes, she looked as he'd thought, innocent and gentle. Her eyes, large and grey, enhanced that, but they did not detriment her appearance by any means. Instead, they drew him to her. They fairly sparked with intelligence and were rendered all the more beautiful for their rarity. He didn't think he'd ever met anyone with eyes like hers before. They had personality. Of course, she had her flaws; she was only human. There was a surprising obstinacy to her chin, that told she could be stubborn when she wanted to be. And her nose was not small and pointed, as was considered perfection. She wasn't stick-skinny, as many girls were with their stringent diets. But, he'd never been attracted to that particular type. She ate well, she ate what she wanted, he noted; not a sparse salad, but a full meal. But, she had soft, gentle curves, which combined with a slim waist and her height, gave her a stunning figure to his eye.
Jeevika, of course, had no idea what he was thinking. She could tell he was looking at her from time to time, but she supposed he was looking only to find fault. He already disliked her sister, she thought. Well, if he was looking to find fault in her, she did not care.
Manny left early to meet another friend. Jeevika got up, to throw away her trash at the same time Viren did. They fell into step, leaving behind the bickering Manvi and Virat.
"How do you like UofT?" Jeevika asked quietly, by way of being polite.
"It's very...crowded," he replied.
"Yes, it's quite competitive."
"I don't mind competition."
"You don't like the people, then?" she couldn't help but ask.
"I like some," he looked at her, "But, I have the freedom to pick and choose my friends. I don't just like anyone."
"No, you don't," she murmured.
"You do?" he asked with a sudden curiosity.
"I have the freedom to pick and choose my friends, as well. But I try not to judge them from the beginning." It was a subtle implication on her part.
"If you don't judge them from the beginning, how would you choose them as your friend at all?" he pointed out.
"By getting to know their character," Jeevika said, "With time."
They walked back to the table. He wanted to get to know her character. And he didn't mind taking all the time in the world.
Later, Charlotte told her, "You know, if he's arrogant, I can't really blame him for it."
"No?"
"He's attractive and he's rich. He's used to all the attention from people."
"That doesn't mean he should ignore them, Charlie...or be rude to them behind their backs," she pointed out.
"No, it doesn't. But, it must be different...to be in his place, I mean."
"Well, then I wouldn't be in his place for all the world," Jeevika smiled, linking arms with her friend, as they walked to their next class.
