Sree, awesome post.😆
Padmini was always with claims and conduct not matching from the time she accepted Shamsher's aegis. She pretended to have great self-respect but had none, ensuring a rather bizarre version of feeling entitled instead - that someone doing you a favour is your greatness towards that person, with a rare brief mention of the huge favour.
But the only actual admirable quality in her may have been that she doted on her daughter and stepdaughter.
I considered Radha as a far worse mother than Padmini. But Radha was useful for saas-bahu interactions and became mass-popular through being an extremely nice (usually) mother-in-law to Madhu.
Presumably the CVs must have designed that 'maa ke sahaarey' song for usage by the female-lead before the characterizations took shape, and kept using the song for the female-lead even when it was eloquently disproven in context throughout the series.
And both Radha and Padmini were so clearly extremely unwise and undeserving of their children's accepting their usually insensible or mass-appalling ideas, so RK and Madhu could be affectionate or coldly courteous to their mothers without ever actually listening to the two ladies except when Radha or Padmini wanted something that RK or Madhu had the same feelings about - if not, ignorable (Madhu was much nicer about pretending that she would listen to her mother but was more ruthless than RK in doing what she wanted regardless of Padmini's opinion).😆 😳
Padmini was a mass-appealing character until March 2013. The female-lead's relatives have worth in the series so long as they try to ensure her pairing with the mass-popular male-lead. If they go against even a reasonably mass-popular male-lead, their own roles are usually drastically impaired.
Here, the CVs saw her mass-popularity (built up with her supporting Madhu's relationship with RK), and seemed to get the mistaken idea that the mass-audience liked a male-lead that Padmini supported. From March 2013 onwards, Padmini was made to denigrate RK and support the other guy. It backfired predictably in keeping with mass-audience's sensibilities of the past two decades. Padmini's and Madhu's praising the other guy didn't get him mass-support, but it reduced Madhu's mass-popularity with conservative mass-audience supporting RK. And Padmini became dispensable, appearing very briefly in a very conservatives-pleasing conciliatory manner.
Pabho could be kept right until the leap because only the fandoms and online-audience had a problem with her. Padmini (like Roma, Mehul etc) could not be kept in the series, with the potential that her presence would reduce mass-interest (already shaky) in scenes featuring her.
From September 2013 onwards, majority-audience's likes and dislikes were enough to scupper scenes, characters and tracks they didn't like.
Wish the commercials-capping had started in 2013's March or April rather than October, with its preceding transitional month in February or March rather than in September.
They would then not have had the luxury of trying to forcefeed their triangle and replacement-attempts for several months or even several weeks.
Instead that tightened accountability came after we had endured several months. After that, viewership-averse ideas had to modified every week, rather than getting tried out for several weeks each.
Unfortunately for us, the channel seems to have waited until after MEIEJ closed and weeks later to accept majority-audience's tastes as the guideline to tracks, resulting in improved mass-viewership.
