Bollywood weddings are incomplete without Manish Malhotra's elaborate and opulent lehengas. The king of couture, changed the way Bollywood looked at fashion. The turning point of his career was Urmila Matondkar's movie 'Rangeela', where his funky and uber-stylish outfits created a lot of buzz. The knotted top and hot pants sported by Urmila became an instant hit. The style got copied and were sold like hot cakes. It was only then that Filmfare awards, for the first time introduced a new award category, just to honour the designer. As the couturier turns 49, we bring to you his 10 iconic designs in Bollywood movies that got popular among the Indian fashion aficionados.

Urmila Matondkar in Rangeela': The spotlight shifted to this designer after Rangeela. The white outfit worn by Urmila in Tanha Tanha' was sassy.

Urmila Matondkar's red dress: The red dress designed by Manish Malhotra in Rangeela was another avante garde design that people loved in the movie. The posters also had this dress.

Kareena Kapoor in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gum': Manish designed an uber-trendy outfit for Kareena for the song Boley Chudiyan'. The parallel Salwar teamed up with a voguish Kameez became a trend then and girls were only seen wearing this outfit during the weddings.

Kajol in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayengey': The green lehenga worn by Kajol in DDLJ' was another masterpiece by the couturier. A lot of girls wore this colour and design for their wedding.

Karisma Kapoor in Raja Hindustani': The sexy red number worn by Karishma in Raja Hindustani was another iconic outfit.

Kajol in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gum': The net and chiffon saris become all the more famous after the movie. Thanks to Manish.

Kajol in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai': Her casual and comfy outfits became really famous and especially her broad hair band is something which every girl in the 90s must have worn in school. And how can we forget the velvet blouse which Kajol wore in the movie. The ladies instantly added that in their wardrobe.

Madhuri Dixit in Dil Toh Pagal Hai': Manish introduced pastel shades and soft styling with Dil Toh Pagal Hai'.

Preity Zinta in Kal Ho Naa Ho': Preity's lehenga in Maahi Ve song was bedazzling one of the most iconic lehengas made by the designer.

Alia Bhatt in Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania': Alia is presently Manish Malhotra's latest muse . She was styled by the designer in Humpty Sharma in Dulhania' and her neon lehenga from the song D Se Dance' is quite in demand.

I LOVED Bebo's outfit. I wanted that soft pale-peach lehenga -salwaar to be mine & I remember getting this made in white-gold. 😆

Madhuri & Kajol in K3G were lovely too!

I think Kajol looked stunning in that vivid green lehenga in DDLJ, it suited her SO MUCH. That lehenga is all about that colour.

That said, I think Manish is too over-rated as a designer. Sabyaschi, AJSK,Ritu Kumar, Anamika Khanna & Anju Modi are miles ahead of him in terms of revival of Indian crafts & techniques & creativity. ❤️ 👏

Ew some of them are so third class especially Kajol's parrot green dress. She used to look terrible anyway especially in DDLJ and KKHH. Her hairstyles 😆
Preity's lehenga and the K3G sarees were the best. Alia's is also pretty
I like Sabya uncle more

Kajol's red and white sarees in Suraj Hua Maddham song were the best. The others, not so much. I also loved Preity's blue lehenga in Maahi ve song and Kareena's outfit in bole chudiya. Rani' sarees in Tumhi dekho na were gorg. Was Manish the designer for those too?
