Twinkle to shine bright in Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan!

Twinkle Bajpai's claim to fame has been Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge and with Zee TV's Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan she surely has struck gold. The singer- turned actor harbored dreams of making it big in the glamour world and post Sa Re Ga

Twinkle Bajpai: From Lucknow to the city of dreams!
Ma… she decided to take to acting. In Betiyaan she plays the youngest daughter (Lakshmi) the unwanted girl child in the house but grows up to be a strong willed woman who stands up for all the women in the house.
"People told me to try for acting while I was participating in Sa Re Ga…I gave auditions and got selected for the show. And I wanted to be a part of this industry besides I don't look bad so I thought of giving it a shot. I relate myself to Lakshmi's character and deep down I am sensitive to all things that are going wrong around us in society. Also, my family has always supported me in what ever I have wanted to do," says the pretty young gal who's still basking in the glory of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge.
So, what's more difficult for the budding actor is it singing or acting?
"If you have mastered both the art forms then both are easy or else both sound difficult. I am a singer first and will continue to sing . Acting is new for me and here all my co-stars are helping me at every step. In fact, at this stage I am looking at television as an opportunity to learn and grow. Later, I'd love to experiment with films,"smiles Twinkle who is now busy shooting almost twelve hours a day and

Ghar Ki Lakshmi!!
faces the camera with much ease.

When queried on the recent controversies concerning the show, the actor brushed it aside claiming she's clueless about it. Twinkle will soon also start working on an album with Sa Re Ga Ma Pa music.
Coming to Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge, what was the entire experience like?
"It's been a great experience and a platform to showcase my talent. Sa Re…stage meant everything to me and I owe my success to Zee and Sa Re Ga and now also Creative Eye," points out Twinkle who belongs to a musical family ( both her parents are music teachers in Lucknow). Currently the peppy actor is residing in Mumbai with her mother.
Signing off she confidently says,"I am not nervous but just a little anxious about the show. But then on second thoughts, there's no success without hard work".

Well said Twinkle!

Diwali rush for concepts, slots and TRPs
By BIJOY A K
(Posted on 19 September 2006)

Indian television's Hindi general entertainment space is at its aggressive best. As the market is about to enter its 'harvest' season -- with the big stakes game of Diwali placed just a month away -- there is a thunderstorm brewing on the programming battlefront.

Late last month, when Zee TV pointed a finger at Star India, making a serious charge of copyright infringement, the incident had given away the plot of the big fight coming up. Zee Telefilms issued a notice to Star demanding it withdraw all activities around its upcoming soap, tentatively titled Betiyaan, claiming ownership of the concept. Zee said it was in fact gearing up to launch its big ticket soap Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyann, produced by Creative Eye.

Star dismissed Zee's charges, asserting that the show's writer Rekha Modi had registered the titles and the concept with various copyright bodies well before Zee made its own registration.

According to market sources, the issue finally got resolved through an out-of-court settlement. Zee retained its original title Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyann title, whereas Star chose the name Betiyaan apni yaa…Paraaya Dhan.

Now, compare the storylines, as offered by both the channels:

Betiyaan apni yaa…Paraaya Dhan is the story of six daughters and one son born into a Zamindar family of Neelkanth Chanda Rana. It is the story of a father who rebukes his daughters because for him they are a burden. They have come into his life only for want of a son. Krishna, the eldest daughter and the protagonist, is based on Lord Krishna's character and personifies his depth of wisdom and understanding. A simple, honest and principled girl, she is the balancing factor amongst her sisters. Paraaya Dhan may be considered the story of many a home in India where it is believed that a son will take the family name further and a daughter is Paraya Dhan, states a Star India release.

According to the Zee official communiqu, Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyann is Zee TV's steadfast attempt to address the ever-persistent issue of gender discrimination in our country. The show highlights certain myths that exist in our society today. States Zee TV programming head Ashvini Yardi on the Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyann, "With Ghar Ki Lahsmi... we are trying to highlight the serious issue of gender inequity that is prevalent in our society."

And it is again strategies and counter strategies. On 19 September, Zee TV conducted a press conference to announce its plans to launch Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyann -- set in a Gujarati household -- on 25 September. On 18 September, Star made the smart move of talking to the media about its October launch Paraaya Dhan well in advance. Apart from the plot, what was revealed was the time slot of 9 pm, Monday to Thursday. The result: Star could let the market know about the development a day in advance.

What makes both these Betiyaan shows keenly fought properties? With Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyann, Zee TV is attacking one of the two most crucial time slots of Star Plus - 10 pm, where the long running soap Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki is playing. Letting the Zee TV do what it had done in the 9 pm - 10 pm slot (with success stories Saath Phere & Kassamh Se) would be suicidal for Star Plus and the channel understands that fact very well.

"Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki is an old show with a dedicated viewership and we are confident of the soap overcoming any new challenge in its way. But we will make efforts to protect the show. I am not hinting that we will be doing stunts to keep the viewer glued. We will be taking liberties that the story line would allow and accordingly, we will be creating twists and turns in the plot to fight competition," Star India senior creative director Shailja Kejriwal says.

"The main strength of Ghar Ki Lakshmi... is its content and we have full faith in it. The soap is very important for us. Creative Eye is producing the show; it has been placed in the 10 pm time slot; and more importantly, we believe that the concept is very unique but very relevant. No counter strategy would be able to stop this soap," retorts Zee TV's Yardi. She adds that Zee wouldn't be resorting to any exercise such as simultaneous premiere on its network channels to expand the viewership.

And one show that will be making its best efforts for not getting caught in this exchange of fire would be Sony's brand new celebrity dance show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. Reason: Jhalak.. again has been placed in the crucial slot of 10 pm, Wednesday and Thursday.

It seems the leading channels are almost done with their key Diwali arrangements. With the introduction of Ghar Ki Lakshmi... in the 10 pm slot, Zee TV has revamped its 10 - 11 pm slot. L'il Champs will now air Friday-Saturday at 10 pm. Shabaash India has been shiifted to the Monday -Tuesday 10.30 pm slot, while Johny Aala Re will now air on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10.30 pm.

Star One is meanwhile revamping its prime time band as well, with the entry of Nach Baliye 2 on 25 September (placed in the 8:30 pm slot) and the launch coincides with the Ghar Ki Lakshmi... launch in terms of dates. In October, two other soaps Saathi Re and Betiyaan apni yaa…Paraaya Dhan will mark the launch of new primetime programming band, with Saathi Re airing at 8:30 pm followed by Betiyaan apni yaa…Paraaya Dhan at 9 pm.

After Jhalak.., Sony's Diwali plans would revolve around two upcoming properties: a prime time soap Kaajaal and a reality-based show titled Big Boss. Though the channel is yet to reveal its plans about these two shows, indications are that they will be placed in the 9 to 10 pm slot

Twinkling bright

The pretty singer, who not only bedazzled the audience with her singing, but also her charismatic looks, will now be seen entering into the world of acting.

She swayed everyone with her magical voice in Zee TV's 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge', but unfortunately did not win the contest.

Yes I am talking about Twinkle Bajpai, who has now stuck gold with her decision to act in Zee Tv's 'Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan'. The next door girl from the city of nawaabs had dreamt big and she surely has nourished all her dreams.

The singer- turned actor harbored dreams of making it big in the glamour world and post 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa', she decided to take to acting.

In the serial, she plays the youngest daughter in the house, Laxmi, the unwanted girl child in the house but grows up to be a tough willed woman who stands up for all the women in the house.

Twinkle chirped that people advised her to act while she was participating in 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa'. She then gave auditions and got selected in the first go.

She revealed that her thoughts are similar to those of the character she is portraying as she is sensitive to all the evils going around in the society.

When asked about her singing career, she said that singing will always be her first priority and as far is acting is concerned, she is still in the learning process. Twinkle is happy to get such supportive co-stars, who she says, have helped her in every lil step towards acting.

When queried on the recent controversies concerning the show, the actor brushed it aside claiming she's clueless about it. Twinkle will soon also start working on an album with Sa Re Ga Ma Pa music.

The pretty gal still has not forgotten the wonderful experiences she had on 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa' and says that the memories have etched a special place in her heart.

She owes her success to Zee TV, which gave her an opportunity to show case her talent. She is also thankful to Creative Eye for having chosen her for their serial.

Currently the peppy actor is residing in Mumbai with her mother and is enjoying every bit of stardom.

Betiyaan is a story of a Gujarati family that depicts the mindset of most of the middle and upper middle class families of the society. It shows the psychology of individuals who still believe that society can be run and governed by men only.

Suryakant Garodia is also one of these. He is a known, respected businessman whose family since past four generations is into business of making traditional Gujarati 'bandhanis' and because of this reason he is one of the most respected and richest individuals of the area. For him its just not a business but matter of pride.

But what worries most to Suryakant is that will this honor and family business end with him? Will there be no one else from his next generation who will follow this decades old family pride and bussiness?

After giving birth to three daughters, his wife Savitri once again is expecting a child and Suryakant this time is very hopeful of having a son. In fact, his family pandit has predicted that this time there are no chances of anything going wrong.

Finally the day comes. It's Diwali. All are hoping that this Diwali will mark the entry of the heir to their family. Suryakant's mother, too, is very hopeful and pressure is building up on Savitri. However, finally as Savitri gives birth to a baby girl, all dreams, expectations and hopes are shattered for one more time.

The newly born baby girl is called 'Laxmi', one who is not welcomed by anyone in the family except her mother and sisters.

Though Suryakant always wishes to have a son but at the same time he is even fulfilling all his responsibilities towards his daughters, but as a man with orthodox thoughts he thinks that 'ladkiyaan toh paraya dhan hotee hain' and one day they have to move on. Things become more complicated when doctors declare that because of some biological problems Savitri will never be able to conceive in future.

His family's pandit suggests that he still has a 'putr-yog' and very soon will be blessed with it but for that, something has to be done…. something very drastic.

And as expected, worst hits the family and Savitri when, one fine day, Suryakant walks in the house with Menka… second wife. Savitri is shocked and helpless. Suryakant's mother as well as sisters supports Suryakant's act. Savitri is helpless and accepts Menka in her life and family.

Menka, after few days gets pregnant and… on the next Diwali, much to the family's delight, delivers a son, Yuvraj.

Suryakant's life changes and now he is the happiest man on the earth. Menka becomes dominant in the house and Savitri and her daughters are pulled down. Suryakant & his family, least bothered about the existence of his first wife and four daughters, is happy in their new world with Menka and Yuvi.

It's in these circumstances that the children grow up under the same roof… a brother whose every wish becomes the command at home… & his four elder sisters, whose every wish is sidelined & sacrificed.

While the elder three sisters are too afraid of their father to raise their voice against this blatant injustice, it is Lakshmi, the effervescent, bubbly youngest of the lot, who will stand up for herself… & her sisters… in fact, for all daughters & women… & stake claim to their rightful place in their family, society… & the world!

MUMBAI: The Diwali fireworks have already hit Indian television's Hindi Entertainment space with archrivals Star India and Zee Network locking horns over a copyright issue.

The "war" was kicked off with Zee Telefilms issuing a notice to Star demanding it withdraw all activites around its upcoming soap, tentatively titled Betiyaan, claiming ownership of the concept.

Star dismissed Zee's charges, asserting that the show's writer Rekha Modi had registered the titles and the concept with various copyright bodies well before Zee made its own registration.

In its legal notice sent to Star, Zee has said that its upcoming prime time soap Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan, produced by Creative Eye, would face serious market implications if Star went ahead with its prime time project carrying a similar title Betiyaan.

Revealing the registration dates of the Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan title and concept with various copyright and industry bodies such as Film Writers Association, Film and Television Producers Guild of India and Society for Copyright regulation of Indian Producers for Film and Television, Zee has warned Star that, "Use of key elements or concept or format in your programme/series may constitute a violation of applicable intellactual property laws, including without limitation those regarding copyright infringement and passing off."

Buttressing its case, Star made available to Indiantelevision.com copies of the registrations made with the Film Writers Association on 5 April, 2006; 12 April, 2006 & 27 July, 2006. The show concept, characters and scripts were registered with the Association of Motion Pictures and TV Programme Producers on 29 July 2006 with the titles Betiyaan and Ghar Ki Lakshmi...Betiyaan. A copy of this document was also furnished.

Zee's notice to Star further states, "We would like to draw your attention to the fact that the television programme 'Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan' is owned by Zee Telefilms Ltd. We have already started the promotions on 5 August, and have incurred and/or committed substantial sums on business promotion / advertising and publicity etc for the programme. Our right to the programme is highly valuable to us as we have invested a lot of resources in the programme in building up awareness and goodwill in the said programme.

"We state that, on 2 August 2006, our programme was registered with the "Film Writers Association" and on 21 August, registered with the Film and Television Producers Guild of India and Society for Copyright regulation of Indian Producers for Film and Television (SCRIPT). We understand that, this registration was done by the Guild after confirming with Association of Motion Pictures & TV Programme Producers."

A Star spokesperson countered, "We have been working with Rekha Modi on a show which she has registered with various industry bodies. The show concept and script of Betiyaan was registered with the Film Writers Association on 5 April, 2006; 12 April, 2006 & 27 July, 2006. The show concept, characters and scripts have also been registered with the Association of Motion Pictures and TV Programme Producers on 29 July 2006 with the titles Betiyaan and Ghar Ki Lakshmi...Betiyaan."

Star has further said that, it would be sticking to its original plan of launching Betiyaan very soon. "We will be launching this show very soon, though we are yet to finalise the title of the same. As far as the show is concerned, we are convinced that this is Rekha Modi's original concept and will take all steps necessary to protect our position in this regard," the company said.

As per the Zee notice, the Star soap will be telecast by Star One. However, the star spokesperson refused to divulge any more details regarding the programme.

Betiyaan under fire
   By: Vickey Lalwani
   September 18, 2006

The controversial hoarding of the show
Zee's forthcoming show Betiyaan, produced by,  Dheeraj Kumar's Creative Eye, is under fire. Some women organisations have objected to the hoardings of Betiyaan,  saying that they discriminate against the girl child and are insulting to women.

Says a source, "The matter has gone to Delhi and the police has asked Zee to remove the hoardings."

However, Zee Network's senior vice-president, Ashish Kaul, denies that the hoardings are being pulled down due to public outcry.

"The Delhi police has issued a statement and I am told that they have sent it to the director of Zee Telefilms. If anybody protests and files a complaint, the police is duty bound to seek an answer. These hoardings are the first part of the campaign. I don't have means to replace the hoardings overnight simply because of a protest," he says.

Kaul says that the campaign has been conceived on what we have seen since childhood, and the second campaign brings to the fore the myth that the male child is superior than the female child.

"The serial is in fact in favour of the female child. I am sure that the same women organisations will praise the second campaign," Kaul
concludes.

Gimme five!

Dheeraj Kumar launches five new faces in his latest serial, Ghar Ki Lakshmi-Betiyann

With one foot planted firmly in mythology and another in social issues, production house Creative Eye is  slowly and steadily climbing its way up the commercial ladder. Even as Dheeraj Kumar's Man Mein Hai Vishwaas launched on Sony, he is ready with yet another show — Ghar Ki Lakshmi-Betiyann; a social soap for Zee. Talking about the USP of the serial, Dheeraj says, "The story revolves around five girls in a family, who are different. I have finalised these five new faces, after a thorough audition that went on for a long time in places like Lucknow, Delhi, Amritsar and Bhopal. Our audiences love to see fresh faces and it is also easier to mould a new actor. I am sure viewers will just love them. The others in the cast will be reputed names from the industry, who are yet to be finalised." Although the channel is tight-lipped about the telecast of the serial, Dheeraj sounds hopeful, "We have already started shooting the first episode. It is a daily, slotted for the prime time. …Betiyann is scheduled to go on air sometime in October."

He adds,"As you can see from the promos, the show gives a message against discrimination towards girls within a family."
