Heading home: Spain players trudge off as their World Cup exit is confirmed
The plane carrying Spain back from the World Cup was struck by LIGHTNING as it landed in Madrid last night.
Vicente del Bosque's men arrived in Brazil as the tournament holders - having triumphed in South Africa in 2010 - and had hoped to continue their domination of the international stage.
However, their campaign got off to a disastrous start with a 5-1 defeat to Holland and a 2-0 loss to Chile in the second match knocked La Roja out.
They did manage to restore some pride by beating Australia in a dead-rubber final match but the campaign will go down as Spain's worst at a World Cup.
And their ride didn't get any smoother as they headed back for Madrid on Tuesday night.
A spokesman from the flight Iberia 2907 confirmed the plane had been hit with a bolt of lightning as it came to land at Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas airport.
The aeroplane was not damaged and no one on board was harmed.
After stepping off the aircraft, the Spanish players headed home without talking to the media.
