The Three Choices...

What a beautiful and meaningful custom (don't know if its really true or just one more figment of cv's imagination)!! And so apt when two people are starting on a memorable journey together, a journey of a life time!!

Whatever fate has in store for them, or whatever they choose. The three options really symbolize the fate of a marriage, the destiny of a union.

One being gold coins, meaning riches. And how important is money, career, profession, all the materialistic aspects of this world? For majority, running in the rat race to success, love is left far behind. In the quest of money and power, everything else becomes secondary. Cause after all in order to live happily, money is important. It might not buy happiness, but it does buy all the comforts. And thus the chase behind dreams, achievements, luxuries...And plenty of couples select this option. Working towards financial security and success, ensuring that whatever else they might lack, money is not one of them. Working hard and earning and saving for their family and its future. This option for the practical.

Another being Kheer (rice pudding), a dessert. Symbolizing the sweetness in life. For some keeping peace is paramount. Where there is understanding, respect, less conflict and more acceptance. A peaceful co existence, giving each other space and understanding. Keeping cool and calm, not getting excited or not giving any space to volatile emotions. Compromise being the foundation of this marriage. And if both the sides learn to let go a bit, life can indeed be sweet. And quite a lot of marriages in the old times used to fall in this category. A quiet firm acceptance of your partner and his follies and foibles, something solid and sweet that lasts through the various storms of time and tide. This one for those whose heads rule over their hearts.

And the last one being Roses, symbolizing Love. And love is never easy. Its soft and velvety and tender. Wonderful fragrance that wins your heart, but at the same time it is prickly. It has the propensity to draw blood. It hurts and how!! Love is passion...and where strong passions are involved, there will always be ups and down. There will be expectations and disappointments, there will be tempers and tantrums, romance and fury, tears and angst. That's love for you. Cause when you opt for love, true love, its path is never smooth or silky. Love makes one vulnerable, open to hurt, susceptible to all human emotions. It will always be a roller coaster ride. Unpredictability its byword, volatility its signature. But then its a connect with the soul. Ironic how love makes life hard and yet makes a life complete. And finally this choice for those, who are ruled by hearts and only hearts.

And Rudra and Parvati chose love...no surprises there. Cause neither are they pratical nor are ruled by their heads. Nope dearies...they are ruled by their passions. Intense to the core. For two strong headed and big hearted souls, there could have been no other option!! It had to be love or nothing, coz anything less would not have kept them tied to each other. Only strong emotions could forge a bond that could last through everything and anything. And when these two get together the coupling could only be stormy !!

Roses and thorns, Parvati and Rudra...so perfect. They both soft and tender and yet both prickly and sharp at times. And that's precisely how a marriage is, a union of two souls is...sometimes sweet sometimes bitter, sometimes hot, sometimes sour...!! Its definitely not roses all the way, thorns too are a part and parcel of life and love.

As our darling KakuSa pointed out, they might fight, patch up, taunt and terrify, even kill each other...but they will stay together...forever !!

Beautiful post ...
I have seen something similar among Bengalis, but for children.
They have  a rasam at the annaprasam ceremony of a child, when the child is offered three choices ... a pen, sweet and money. Never seen it at a wedding ceremony.

Lovely post Eve.
Beautiful interpretation of the custom.

Life isn't all roses, thorns are a part of it too and together they will walk this path.

Really?? Now that's interesting...what deep thoughts behind such simple ceremonies. Traditions and customs have such meaningful roots, if only we appreciate them. 😊
