Mother's Little Helper - Recap

Milton, IL

A man, Ric Young, is watching golf on TV and his wife Karen, a schoolteacher, comes home with flowers. The man asks what is for supper and dismisses it when his wife tells him meatloaf. His wife complains that he's criticizing her, grabs a candlestick, and beats him to death.

At the bunker, Dean is going through the books when Sam comes in and tells his brother about the case. Dean tells Sam to check it out on his own and finally snaps, complaining that they don't have time. Sam wonders why he's been acting obsessed since Dean killed Cuthbert, and Dean says that he wants to have an end to finishing off Abaddon. Dean goes back to reading and Sam says that he's checking in and asks him to call him if he finds anything. Once he goes, Dean takes out a bottle and starts drinking.

Sam drives to Milton and checks in at the sheriff's station. The sheriff confirms that Ric wasn't violent, and he hasn't seen any demonic signs. They go to Karen's cell and discover that she hung herself. Blood is splattered everywhere. As the EMTs take the body away, the sheriff says that Karen only went to the grocery store on the day she murdered Ric. Sam calls Dean and tells him that Karen is dead, and that if he doesn't turn up then he'll be back. He asks Dean how the research is going and Dean vaguely replies and then hangs up and stares at the empty bottle. Dean remembers what Cain told him and how he killed Cuthbert with the First Blade, and looks at his shaking hand. After a moment, Dean starts to make a call but then stops and walks out.

A teenager, Billy, is walking to his girlfriend's house. He calls to explain and then hitches a ride with a friend, Mr. Richie. Billy gets in and then Mr. Richie attacks him and there's a burst of white light.

Sam goes to the local diner for supper as Billy comes in and starts eating from a plate. When the waitress objects, Billy yells at her to stop. She comes over and Billy knocks a glass over. The waitress threatens to call his mom and Billy stabs her through the hand with a knife. Sam leaps in and manages to subdue Billy. When he takes Billy to the sheriff's station, he discovers that three other locals are in the same state as Billy. The sheriff tells Sam that Billy's girlfriend said that he was hitching a ride. Once the sheriff leaves, Sam sprinkles Billy with holy water but nothing happens. Billy says that he's clear of everything, and that there's no reason for what he's doing.

When Sam goes out to the station, the sheriff gives him security footage from the grocery store where Karen was shopping. Sam calls Dean, who is at a bar drinking, and tells his brother what he's learned. As they talk, Sam realizes that they're acting like he was when he lost his soul. He asks Dean for his help but Dean claims that he's getting close to Abaddon and can't take a break. Once he hangs up, Crowley appears behind Dean and points out that he's lying to his brother.

At the sheriff's station, Sam goes over the footage and spots a van. An old woman, Julia Wilkinson, comes in and starts complaining to a deputy that demons are back. Sam overhears her and comes over, and talks to her privately. Julia starts to say the demons came to Milton and then realizes that Sam isn't acting like she's nuts. She stares at his face and then asks if he's one of the Men of Letters. Julia explains that they came there in 1958 and they were a lovely couple.

1958

Julia is working at the local nunnery when a couple arrives: Henry Winchester and Josie Sands. Henry says that they're from the Office of the Inquisition.

Now

At the bar, Crowley points out that Dean called him and reminds him that Dean was going to track down Abaddon. He notes that Abaddon isn't likely to be in the bar and figures that Dean is stalling. Dean doesn't respond and Crowley asks him how he felt. He figures that Dean is stalling because he's scared.

Sam tells Julia that he sort of knew Henry and Josie, and asks what they were investigating. She explains that they were investigating Sister Mary Catherine, who killed two people and then killed herself.

1958

Julia takes the couple to see the Mother Superior and Sister Agnes. The Mother Superior reviews their papers and then has Sister Agnes appoint Julia as their guide. Josie asks Julia to take them to Sister Mary's living quarters and as they go, Josie complains that she doesn't like nuns. Henry wonders why they're there and Josie points out that it's their last mission before their initiation. He wonders what would happen to his family if he dies, and points out that she doesn't have a family. Josie assures him that his wife Millie is a lucky woman.

When they arrive in Sister Catherine's room, they discover that she wrote on the walls in her own blood. An ancient symbol is carved in the wall and Josie translates it as "Knights of Hell."

Later, Julia is in her room after curfew when she hears someone walking by. She goes out to investigate and sees the Mother Superior dragging a struggling nun. When Julia turns, Sister Agnes knocks her out. Later, Julia wakes up tied to a chair. Several other people are all tied up and gagged. Sister Agnes comes in and drags one prisoner away,. A minute later, Henry and Josie come in and start exorcising the possessed nuns.

The Mother Superior comes in and ignores Henry's exorcism rite, knocking him aside. She then complains to Josie that hunters are always getting involved. Josie is puzzled and finally explains that they're part of the Men of Letters. Sister Agnes comes in and they both chuckle at the thought of a woman among the Men of Letters. The Mother Superior then prepares to possess Henry, but Josie offers herself instead. She says that she can be more useful to them because people underestimate a woman, but the demon realizes that Josie loves Henry. It tells Josie that Henry loves her like a sister, and Josie repeats her plea. The demon identifies herself as Abaddon and enters Josie's body, while Julia looks on. The Mother Superior's body falls to the floor and Abaddon tells Sister Agnes that she'll study the Men of Letters and then destroy them. The Knight of Hell orders Sister Agnes to play dead and then wakes up Henry, pretending to be Josie.

Now

Julia tells Sam that whatever happened at St. Bonaventure is happening again. Sam realizes that the van in the grocery store photo has the convent's name on int.

At the bar, Dean tries to ignore Crowley, who figures that Cain gave Dean the Mark for a reason. The demon wonders why Dean is fighting what he really is, and Dean insists that he's nothing like Cain. Crowley points out that he saw Dean and Cain together and knows differently, and warns Dean that they're in it together. He goes off to the bathroom and Dean remembers Cuthbert telling him that it would become easier each time he killed. Dean glances over and sees a man holding a rosary. The man draws a knife and goes after Crowley, and Dean follows him.

When the young hunter, Jake, pauses outside the restroom, Dean introduces himself and tells him that he doesn't stand a chance. Jake insists on continuing, but Dean figures that he's never fought a demon before and warns that Crowley will kill everyone he knows. After a moment, Jake puts his knife away and admits that his kid sister doesn't deserve that. Dean and Jake shake and then Jake walks off, and Dean knocks on the door and tells Crowley they have to go.

Sam drives to the now-abandoned convent.

Crowley comes out to where Dean is waiting. Dean figures that he went into the bathroom to shoot up with human blood, and Crowley freely admits it. He figures that Dean wants to touch the First Blade again, and Dean tells him that what he wants doesn't matter because it's their only chance to kill Abaddon. Dean says that the plan hasn't changed and Crowley promises to bring the blade once Dean finds Abaddon. As Dean walks off, Jake comes out and admits that Dean did what Crowley predicted. Crowley isn't surprised, and figures that now Dean is ready.

Sam goes into the convent and makes his way to the cellar. He finds bottles filled with glowing white light just as Mr. Richie attacks him. Sam kills him with the knife, but Sister Agnes punches Sam and takes the knife. She explains that if any of the jars broken, the souls would go back to their owners. The demon says that times have changed and now she's stuck with a handyman, tricking anybody she can find. She knocks Sam down and says that Abaddon is using the souls to make new demons to serve her. Sam pulls himself up and Sister Agnes explains that they have dozens of factories processing souls. They want Sam and are prepared to rip out his soul.

Sam tries to cast the exorcism rite but Agnes grabs his throat. Undeterred, Sam activates his iPod which has a recording of the rite. Sister Agnes manages to smash it, but Sam stabs her in the back with the knife. He then releases the souls and they float off to their owners. In their cells, Billy and the others recover.

The next morning, Sam approaches Julia and asks her why she didn't warn Henry that Josie was possessed. The ex-nun explains that the convent didn't prepare her how to act in the face of true evil.

1958

Henry and Josie tell the nuns to keep everything secret. Josie glares briefly at Julia and then leaves with Henry.

Now

Julia left the order out of shame because she had betrayed the convent, God, and herself. Sam assures her that what she told him saved lives, and tells Julia to take care before he drives off.

1958

Josie asks Henry if he's okay, and he is happy that he made a difference. He insists that their work is a noble causing and foolish for doubting it. Henry asks Josie how she feels, and she says that she feels like a whole new person. As they drive off, Josie looks at Julia.

Now

Back at the bunker, Sam comes in and grabs some files to help his brother with the research. After a moment, Sam tells Dean that he was right about finding Abaddon as soon as possible. He explains what the Knight of Hell is doing and starts working.
