After several projects as a child artist, Kamal Haasan's breakthrough into lead acting came with his role in the 1975 drama Apoorva Raagangal, in which he played a rebellious youth in love with an older woman. He secured his second Indian National Film Award for his portrayal of a guileless school teacher who tends a child-like amnesiac in 1982's Moondram Pirai. He was particularly noted for his performance in Mani Ratnam's Godfatheresque Tamil film Nayagan (1987), which was ranked by Time magazine as one of the best films of all time. Since then he has gone on to appear in other notable films such as his own productions, Hey Ram and Virumaandi, as well as Dasavathaaram, in which he appeared in ten distinct roles and the recent starrer Vishwaroopam which is the first Indian film to utilize the new Auro 3D sound technology.

Moreover, has also forayed into Bollywood. He made his Bollywood debut in Ek Duuje ke liye, the remake of his Telugu-language film Maro Charithra directed by K. Balachander (which earned him his first Filmfare Hindi-language nomination). After a year of starring in commercial films, Haasan won the first of three National Awards for Best Actor for his portrayal of a schoolteacher caring for an amnesia patient in Balu Mahendra's Moondram Pirai, later reprising his role in the Hindi version, Sadma. During this period he focused on Bollywood remakes of his Tamil films, including Yeh To Kamaal Ho Gaya,  Zara Si Zindagi and Chachi420.

Kamal Haasan, widely respected and admired in the Indian film industry, is often praised as someone who would have won many Oscars, if he had been born outside India. His mentor K. Balachandar, while agreeing with such sentiment, says in that case Kamal would not have been able to have a diverse acting career and the adulation he has now. Mani Ratnam, who directed Kamal in Nayagan, has claimed he has missed working with Kamal.  Kamal Haasan's contributions to films have been lavishly praised by his peers in the Indian film industry like Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan. Younger actors and film makers like Surya, Madhavan, Bala consider Kamal Haasan as their inspiration. His list of admirers go beyond cinema. M. F. Hussain has claimed, he found Kamal Haasan as the most exciting Indian film-maker/actor.

In addition to acting, screen writing and directing, he has also featured in films as a songwriter, playback singer and choreographer. His film production company, Rajkamal International, has produced several of his films. In 1990, he was awarded the Padma Shri for his contributions to Indian cinema. Kamal Haasan is also a recipient of an Honorary doctorate by Sathyabama University. In 2009, he became one of very few Indian actors to have completed 50 years in cinemaIn April 2013 Haasan received an award on behalf of Indian cinema from Chris Brown, executive vice-president for conventions and business operations of the National Association of Broadcasters, as part of the New York Festivals International Film & TV Awards. He is one of 20 film celebrities recognised by Coca-Cola India with the launch of the 24th edition of the Limca Book of Records in 2013.

He is widely acclaimed as an actor and is well known for his versatility in acting. Kamal Haasan has won several Indian film awards, including four National Film Awards and numerous Filmfare Awards, and is known for having starred in the largest number of films submitted by India in contest for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

No other actor in the country has achieved such distinctions in his career and created milestones for himself.  Indeed, Kamal Hassan is the living encyclopaedia for Indian Film Industry.

Happy Birthday to the Legend of Tamil Cinema

Kamal Hassan

filmmaker kamal haasan turned 59

Actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan, who turned 59 Thursday, needs no special introduction, but some of his best performances have gone unnoticed in numerous under-rated films.

IANS lists a few such films from the career of this universal hero.

"Aval Appadithan": Arguably one of the masterpieces of Tamil cinema, this film may have been a box office disaster, but it was made much ahead of its time. Kamal plays a documentary filmmaker, through whose eyes the film presents the moving story of Sripriya, a men-hating independent woman with a bitter past. The razor-sharp dialogues with surrealistic filmmaking style offer an experience no Tamil film, before or after, has managed to deliver.

"Anbe Sivam": The actor takes an agnostic stance about atheism and communism in "Anbe Sivam", which translates to "Love is God". The film revolves around two characters - a communist and a capitalist, who learn important lessons of life via a road trip. The film remains underrated to date because many misunderstood its sarcastic undertones associated with atheism.

"Raja Paarvai": I doubt if any actor would take the risk of playing a blind character in his 100th film, but Kamal Haasan is an exception. In this poignant tale of romance between a blind violinist and a young Christian girl, director Singeetham Srinivasa Rao extracted the best out of Kamal, who had also co-written the film.

"Virumaandi": Borrowing the narrative style of Japanese film "Rashomon", Kamal addressed the abolition of death sentence from the Indian judicial system in "Virumaandi". As a happy-go-lucky village rogue, he delivered one of the finest performances in his career with this film, which is remembered for giving Tamil cinema one of the finest actors, Pasupathy.

"Hey Ram": In this semi-fictional recounting of India's partition and the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, Kamal as the film's writer-director and actor highlights religious extremism. The film was a box office disaster and paved way to a lot of controversies, but the audience hardly realised that its purpose was to highlight the journey of a character named Saket Ram, who rejected the notion of securing rights through violence and allowed religious hatred to be taken over by love.

"Guna": It is very unlikely that "Guna" would ever feature in a list of best films featuring Kamal because it still remains unappreciated and had turned out to be yet another box office failure. But I doubt if anyone else could have played an innocent schizophrenic to perfection. A complex love story, the film could only be embraced if one understood an important line from a song, which translates to "this love, to be understood by humans, is not human love; it's beyond that. This is divine love".

"Varumayin Niram Sivappu": A satire on the unemployment situation in India in the 1980s, Kamal collaborated with his mentor K. Balachander to play an unemployed youth in the film. "Varumayin Niram Sivappu", which fittingly translates to "Colour of Poverty is Red", is a unique film that not just entertains but questions the veracity of modern-day youth in a socialist India.

"Mahanadi": Easily one of the most tragic films in Kamal's career, "Mahanadi" pits a villager against those from a town who rob him off his prosperity. As a tormented father in search of his missing children, this is easily one of the actor's best performance in the 1990s.

"Swati Mutyam": As an adult with the mind of a child, the actor proved once again why he is considered one of the country's finest actors. It was touted to be the Indian version of Tom Hanks-starrer "Forrest Gump", but in reality, "Swati Mutyam" was a brilliant effort to confront existing socio-cultural traditions through the eyes of an autistic man. It is considered underrated because many failed to understand what it set out to achieve
