50 percent the script and rest our improvisation: Ali Asgar

Ali Asgar is one of the finest and talented actors we have in the world of Indian Television today. This veteran actor, who began his career with Ek Do Teen Chaar, has, over the years, gained immense popularity with Balaji Telefilms' Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki as Kamal among lot of other shows. In Bollywood, he has mostly played a comedian. Currently, he is seen essaying the role of Juju in SAB TV's Jeannie Aur Juju and as dadi in Colors' Comedy Nights With Kapil.

Seeing his immense popularity in the Colors show, we got in touch and made him respond to a few questions that we hurled at him.

Firstly, Ali tell us who conceptualized the role of dadi and are you happy playing this character? "Well, it was the idea of the creatives. One day, they called me and briefed me on dadi's character although I was not that keen on doing the said role as throughout my journey I have mostly played a woman's role, I didn't want to get repetitive. You won't believe that I have hardly watched Comedy Nights as every day I am busy with both my shows. But I am glad people are enjoying our show. The other day when I was in my car, people who saw me requested me to enact the steps of dadi for them. So it feels great that people like you and enjoy whatever you are doing," he answered.

Don't you feel uncomfortable when you have to kiss actors in the show? "(Laughs) Actually, since I know almost all the actors I share a good rapport with them. So it's kind of fun that we share and audiences enjoy watching it," he observed.

Many well known and veteran actors have graced the show, any actor whom you would like to see in the show? "I would love if Dilip Saab (Kumar) and Rishiji graced our show. From my school days I have grown up watching them in umpteen films. So for me, both of them are my idols," Ali maintained.

Comedy Nights has turned weekly in spite of getting good TRPs. His take on it. "Any particular decision is always for the betterment of the show. I am sure with the weekly concept, we will get more viewership with viewers not willing to miss it at all," he stated.

Currently male actors are playing more roles of women. Is the trend catching on and here to stay? "I know, but I have been doing this for a long time. As I mentioned earlier, I didn't want to play a woman but still it happened. My son was a bit apprehensive of me doing a woman's role; hence to make him understand, I had to gift him a PSP game station. But in Comedy Nights, if I get an opportunity, I would want to play a different character in every episode. I feel that there should be more of variations, so that it would be a surprise element for viewers every week. In our show, it is 50 per cent script while the rest is our input. You never know how audiences and celebs will react to your joke," Ali averred.
