Maharishi Valmiki, before becoming a divine sage, was a thief by the name of Ratnakara. He used to steal to provide for his family, but once Narad Muni came and told him that he was doing so many sins for the sake of his family. Would that same family partake of his sins in return? Ratnakara went to his family but they all refused to partake of his sins. Dismayed by this realization that his family was only interested in what he provided for them but unwilling to share his sins, he asked Narad Muni for a way to absolve his sins and become a better person. Narad Muni told him to chant "Rama" over and over again, but because of his sins Ratnakara could not pronounce such a holy name, so he chanted "Mara" over and over again which eventually became "Rama" when the syllables were switched around. Ratnakara meditated for so many years that an ant hill formed around his body, so he was renamed "Valmiki" which means "one who sits in an anthill". Because of his tapasya, Valmiki became a great sage and later went on to compose the Ramayana.😊
