Now TV shows are targetting the teens
Teen shows like Surveen Guggal Topper of the year, Gumrah: End of Innocence, Rush, The Buddy project, Dil dosti dance are compelling youngsters to think about issues close to their heart.
While some shows are based on real-life teenage crime 'incidents that occurred due to impulse, anger, rage, greed or peer pressure, others are fun-loving shows based on student-teacher relationships, aims and ambitions, college life and other topical issues.
Gumrah: End of Innocence, which portrays the goings-on in a youngster's mind, is creating an impact because of its inspiration from true stories. According to Vikas Gupta, creative director and producer of the show, it is an eye-opener for parents as well as the youth. "Inspired from true stories, it has helped in forming a connect between teenagers and their parents which seems to be missing these days," says Gupta. A teenager's mind is fragile ' adolescence is a critical phase, so the makers of the show had to be extra cautious about the content. "The show portrays not only the reason of crime but also its consequences, thereby making the youth think seriously about such issues," he adds.
If Gumrah shows teenage crime, Surveen Guggal ' Topper of the year is a college drama that delves into parental pressure, adapting to college life. Smriti Kalra, who plays the lead, feels the show is a reflection of a youngster's life. "The college drama revolves around the current generation, parental pressure and how she deals with the culture shock and adapts to the new environment of the city," says Smriti, adding that the show will help parents in opening up with their children and understanding their thoughts.

A lot of research goes into these shows ' one, because they have to connect with youngsters, and two, because they can, if portrayed correctly, make a difference. Karan Kundra, who is currently hosting Gumrah, says, "Some of the episodes, like those of young girls getting into prostitution, a boy raping his own sister, were quite disturbing. A lot of research had gone into every episode. The show is helping young minds control impulses and anger which can lead to serious consequences." The idea is to not sensationalise any issue yet make an impact. "Youngsters should be compelled to think twice before committing a heinous crime," says Gupta.
The Buddy Project is another show which is easily relatable. It shows the finer nuances of a student-teacher relationship, and how a teacher is instrumental in changing the lives of his pupils. "It's something that today's generation can relate to," says Manav Gohil. Aniruddha Rajderkar, director of the show Dil Dosti Dance, says the light, fun elements are important. "While there are several shows on TV which depict teen crime and the psyche behind them, I wanted to keep the show light with a subtle message at the end. We had to be cautious while creating each and every character, as on-screen characters tend to become the idols of teenagers," he adds.
