Btw, why did Parineeti tell in one of her interviews that its not based on Hindu-Muslim clashes or politics and her name is Zoya just because Habib likes Muslim names?

I've read the spoiler and I don't think Lootera will have a similar ending. They've said that the story is only a 20% adaptation of The Last Leaf, and Ranveer is not based on the character in the short story, Sonakshi is. Spoiler: At the very least, they won't go for a double whammy like Ishaqzaade, the most disappointing thing about which is that it harks back to stale, old Romeo and Juliet pretty closely.

And yes, Parineeti did indeed say in one of her interviews that the religious difference doesn't play a role in the movie. If it was so, they should've marketed or at least mentioned it as such so that those of us expecting a difference premise for once weren't misled. Will still catch the movie for the promising first half, dialogues and performances!

Haha at Raja Sen's review. The movie deserves it. xD I hope Arjun & Parineeti do another movie together like Ranveer-Anushka did. They have great chemistry. The script totally ruined their their chance to shine. =/

What Parma does to Zoya in the film is plain unforgivable and yet the filmmakers let him off the hook. As does Zoya herself, after her character is brutally altered into that of an overindulgent, besotted fool.
When I call it the new Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, I don't mean Faisal's film is as meritless as that colossal disaster.

what does that mean...does he RAPE her ?

Thanks for clarifying bcuz thats another movie I was looking out for.

I was relieved when she denied of the film having communal/political war but the reviews left me feeling cheated. 😆 That too by Parineeti who has been into marketing department of BBB 😆 Oh well..

Anyway, the public review posted by MissIffiy - especially that man who said that its not a bad movie and with some valid reasoning of what he didn't like gave me some more boost to watch this film despite of whatever violence it has.

Ishaqqzade's smart writing lets it down badly in the second half. Ends up as a series of repartees and chase sequences.

Masand's Verdict: Love hurts

Ishaqzaade

Rating: 2.5

May 11, 2012

Cast: Arjun Kapoor, Parineeti Chopra, Gauhar Khan

Director: Habib Faisal

In a fictional small town in North India, battle lines are drawn between political families, the Chauhans and the Qureshis, sworn enemies, each seeking victory against the other in the forthcoming elections. Against this tense terrain, director Habib Faisal sets his Romeo & Juliet story, Ishaqzaade.

Arjun Kapoor is Parma, the loutish grandson of the Chauhan patriarch who gleefully loots local vendors and sets fire to their shops when they beg for a little compassion. Parineeti Chopra is Zoya, feisty daughter of the senior most Qureshi, who'd much rather have a gun over brand new gold earrings. Like most love stories in Hindi films, this one too starts off on the wrong foot, when Parma storms into the Qureshi estate to take off with the local nautch girl who is performing there. In the fight that breaks out, Parma pulls out his gun at an infuriated Zoya, who is determined to get revenge. She gets that opportunity on campus soon after, and predictably a romance between the two is on the cards.

The film's first half coasts along nicely, culminating in a delicious, unpredictable twist. But as the film's second half kicks in, it becomes clear the writers had no idea where to go with the story. Which is possibly why the love-struck couple spends the entire post-intermission portion just running.

Like in Do Dooni Chaar, director Habib Faisal's last film, and in Band Baaja Baaraat, his breakout script, the real pleasure in Ishaqzaade lies in its colloquial language, believable characters, and lived-in locations. Faisal gives us a leading lady worth rooting for in Zoya, a firebrand who knows how to take charge. Parineeti Chopra breathes life into the part, emerging the biggest strength of this film. As Parma, meanwhile, that unlikely leading man with no moral compass, Arjun Kapoor is confident but at times awkward, and his rawness shows.

Much of the film's strengths come undone by the use of such tired clichs as the religious differences that stand in the way of true love, and the sacrificial hooker with a heart of gold. Also Faisal resorts to an unforgivably unoriginal climax ' for both the resolution of the lovers, and their families ' that sticks out in a film with such promise.

Ishaqzaade benefits considerably from Amit Trivedi's excellent soundtrack and Hemant Chaturvedi's sharp cinematography. Faisal creates a believable world with charming characters, and his leads have crackling chemistry. I'm going with two-and-a-half out of five for director Habib Faisal's Ishaqzaade. It's far from perfect, but you won't be bored.

Parineeti Chopra & Arjun Kapoor in Ishaqzaade

Film: Ishaqzaade
Director: Habib Faisal
Cast: Parineeti Chopra, Arjun Kapoor and others
Rating: **

The setting is Almore, Uttar Pradesh, a small town where, after local politics, gun-wielding is the favourite pastime. Most of the time, the deadly mixture is fuelled by puritanical attitudes making it the hotbed of hatred.

Zoya Qureshi (Parineeti Chopra) is a wild cat. One among the boys of a fairly religious, political family, Zoya takes pleasure in gun-toting. She's feisty enough not to think twice before pulling the trigger.

Parma Chauhan (Arjun Kapoor) is rough, irreverent, growing in the shadow of grandfather Surya Chauhan. "Tumhari maa mere bete ko kha gayi" is the kind of relationship Parma and his mother has with Surya. To prove he's a Chauhan ka khoon, Parma must do something drastic.

The opportunities are presented as Surya Chauhan and Aftab Qureshi go head-to-head in the local elections. Zoya campaigns for her father, Parma for his family patriarch. Zoya dreams of becoming an MLA herself someday, Parma is just happy zooming around, picking up call girls from private parties (Zoya's in particular) and sometimes setting fire to belongings of those who challenge him. They have firebrand chemistry; they're violent, brash, and unapologetic. You slap me, I kick you and we're all happy.

Until, of course, love happens (and invariably ruins everything, like in recent Yashraj films like Band Baaja Baarat, Ladies v/s Ricky Bahl). Why must the fieriest heroine always turn vulnerable lover? Why must logic be defied to make place for something that makes no sense? Yashraj movies give love a bad name!

Ishaqzaade has a slow start, nothing exciting enough. Until Zoya and her love for shikaar is made evident. Parineeti has marveled audiences as the loudmouthed Dimple Chaddha in Ladies v/s Ricky Bahl. As Zoya, she takes that to a whole new level, confident and unwavering from start to finish. Poor Arjun is only left trying to match that energy. His uncanny semblance (acting and looks) to Abhishek Bachchan cannot be missed. No doubt he's made a serious attempt at making a smashing debut, but Parineeti definitely steals his thunder. Both shine as ishaqzaades, dark, crude yet likeable. Gauhar Khan is decent as Chand Baby. There are many others, none memorable enough.

Director and writer Habib Faisal (he wrote the adorable Do Dooni Chaar in 2010) seems a bit more indulgent with Ishaqzaade. He takes his time to establish the boiling Almore, his shady characters and then the plot that sees generous sprinklings of political and religious rivalry. Zoya and Parma's love story beg for attention, even though you like them, you cannot sympathise with them. The love story drags on till a point you stop caring. After the very slow start, things start picking up towards the interval. The second half is repulsive, length wise. The dialogue isn't memorable either, though Parineeti's timing is impeccable.

The songs are a bore too, except for the title song and Pareshan. Ishqzaade Ishqzaade is the song you hum and visualise yourself banging your knuckles while bobbing your head.

Watch if you must, go expecting nothing. You might just enjoy Ishqzaade.

Ishaqzaade Does Well On Day One

Friday 11th May 2012 23.00 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Ishaqzaade has done well on day one with collections looking to come around the 4.50 crore nett mark as per early estimates. The film has done good or decent business in all circuits. The early collections suggest the following circuit totals. (approx figures)

Delhi/UP - 90 lakhs

East Punjab - 35 lakhs

CI - 20 lakhs

CP Berar - 30 lakhs

Rajasthan - 30 lakhs

Mumbai circuit should easily cross the 1.50 crore nett mark and may even be around 1.75 crore nett.

The opening day is a lot better than Kahaani and Vicky Donor as performance is pretty good in both multiplexes and single screens whereas Kahaani and Vicky Donor only collected at multiplexes. Kahaani came on 1100 screens, Vicky Donor on 600 screens and Ishaqzaade is around 1200 screens.

Does anybody know the budget? Will it make it to average at least?
