It's 2012! The doomsday prophesied by the Mayan Calendar may be here anytime soon, but as far as Tollywood is concerned, there seems to be plenty to look forward to. "The year will see a new director break into Tollywood who is going to take the industry by storm and prove to be a game changer," predicts city based astrologer Daivagnya Sharma. While that prophecy may sound mysterious, what we know for sure is that there are plenty of exciting films lined up for us. The array of big star action entertainers include the Venkatesh-starrer, "Bodyguard", Ravi Teja's "Nippu", Mahesh Babu's "Businessman", Rajamouli's "Eega", Nagarjuna's "Damarukam", NTR's "Dammu" and others.
Mahesh Babu's "Businessman" is eagerly awaited, especially after the success of "Dookudu". Film scholar Kathi Mahesh Kumar feels if "Businessman" can live up to the hype, this could be Mahesh Babu's year. "He is easily the biggest star in the business now. We could well see Mahesh consolidate his position as the undisputed superstar of Tollywood," says Kumar.
2012 will also be a landmark one in Tollywood, what with multi-starrers lined up. "Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu", starring Mahesh and Venky together will be something to watch out for. "Actors like Nagarjuna, Venkatesh, who are on the other side of 50, would be looking to play their age on screen. If the movie works at the BO, we could well see a lot of senior stars following suit," adds Mahesh.
There are a slew of exciting visual effects bonanzas too lined up for summer. There is the Nagarjunastarrer "Damarukam" and Rajamouli's much-awaited "Eega" which RGV believes is "going to be the film that will change the face of Telugu cinema". VFX expert Phani Egone says, "2012 will be a big year as far as visual effects are concerned. "The film, "Damarukam" has some of the most cutting edge character animation and CGI," says Phani adding, "Rajamouli's "Eega" too is using cool character animation to create a house-fly that will be a full blown character."
Then there is Rahul Nambiar's untitled action entertainer that is set for release, later in the year. "We have created a 3D creature and I can assure you that not many will be able to tell that it is computer generated. It is going to be mind blowing as will be the action episodes in the film," says Rahul Nambiar who is also directing the film.
What's Tollywood without its masala entertainers? This year has a good dose of potboilers lined up too. There is NTR's "Dammu", Prabhas-starrer "Rebel", Ram's "Endukante Premanta" and Naga Chaitanya's "Autonagar Surya". Balakrishna's "Adhinayakudu" where the actor will be playing a triple role for the first time is also eagerly awaited.
The year 2011's hot pick, Rana Daggubati too has a lot to look forward to ' RGV's "Department", director Krish's "Vande Jagadgurum" and his maiden Tamil film by Selvaraghavan. Meanwhile Ram Charan is going to have a big year too. Apart from his much-awaited marriage, he has two action flicks ' "Rachcha" and "Yevadu" ' lined up for release as well.
