Nirupa Roy passes away

Renowned yesteryear actress Nirupa Roy passed away on Wednesday morning following a cardiac arrest. She was 73.

Nirupa Roy who started her career with the Gujrati film Ranakdevi in 1946 made her debut into Hindi films with Homi Wadia's Amar Raj. But subsequently she was more remembered for playing motherly roles in films. Some of her most popular Hindi films include Deewaar, Amar Akbar Anthony, Suhaag, Betaab and Mard just to name a few from her vast repertoire of more than 250 films. Her last Hindi film was Lal Badshah that released in 1999.

But this most affectionate mother of Bollywood, Nirupa Roy, has now gone to rest in the divine world of the almighty. She passed away following a cardiac arrest in Mumbai on October 14, 2004 at the age of 73.


The most acclaimed onscreen mother of Indian cinema Nirupa Roy was best remembered for her films like 'Deewar', 'Mard', 'Khoon Pasina' and 'Amar Akbar Anthony' with acting icon Amitabh Bachchan during her career spanning more than three decades. The daughter of Kokila Kishore and Chandra Balsara, Nirupa Roy, had started her career as a lead actress and finally became a trendsetter as the onscreen mother. She had made her entry to the world of light with a Gujarati feature 'Ranakdevi'. She entered into Bollywood through the film 'Gunsundari'. In the mythological age of India, she was popularly established in the role of the onscreen goddess. Roy first played the role of a mother in Dev Anand's 'Munimji'. But her motherly bond with the angry young man Amitabh Bachchan bound the audience with Nirupa Roy, with the latter bringing her enormous popularity. The ideal mother betraying the son for earning money though unfair means in 'Deewar' was the milestone of her career. "Mere paas maa hai" in the voice of Shashi Kapoor in this film against her character remained as a tagline forever for any Indian screen mother. She received the Film fare Best Supporting Actress award three times and Film fare Lifetime Achievement award this year.
