Edward Norton. Brad Pitt. David Fincher. Based on an incredible novel by Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club (1999) was one of the seminal films of the 1990s.
Imagine our surprise, therefore, when we see promos of Vicky Chopra's directorial debut Fight Club boasting of lines translated verbatim from the original and laced with ham, an unimpressive ensemble cast, and -- this is something even Sanjay Gupta wouldn't dare -- the name of the original film.
As always, the filmmaker and stars insist it's not a copy. Here's a look at what they claim it is.
We mean it when we call this cast unimpressive. Riteish Deshmukh being the highlight, the film also stars Dino Morea, Zayed Khan, Sohail Khan, Suniel Shetty, Aashish Chaudhary and Ashmit Patel. Yes, basically it's an extremely literal who-is-who of forgotten actors.
And because it's a Bollywood film, some women are thrown in for good measure -- Amrita Arora, Neha Dhupia and Diya Mirza.
Zayed Khan plays Vicky, a flamboyant, fun-loving, college-going dude who comes up with the idea of a fight club, described as a forum where people get to bash each other's brain in, all in good fun.
The Brad Pitt of this Fight Club? We'll have to wait and watch.
Team Fight Club, as these youths apparently call themselves, get into some trouble as they fall in love. This, for some reason, leads to the gang travelling to Delhi to look after a nightclub.
With ganglord Suniel Shetty baying for -- pretty much anybody's -- blood, and with the easygoing boys from Mumbai feeling totally lost in the strange, dark city of Delhi, there's chaos everywhere.
Call us sceptical, but we aren't expecting a lot from this film.
Whenever Fight Club releases sounds like a good weekend to curl up with the original DVD.
