WASHINGTON ' The White House said the photograph of a dead Osama bin Laden is "gruesome" and that "it could be inflammatory" if released.

White House press secretary Jay Carney said the White House is mulling whether to make the photo public, but he said officials are concerned about the "sensitivity" of doing so. Carney said there is a discussion internally about the most appropriate way to handle but "there is not some roiling debate here about this."

Asked if President Barack Obama is involved in the photo discussion, Carney said the president is involved in every aspect of this issue.

U.S. officials say the still-secret photographic evidence shows a precision kill shot above his left eye, which blew away part of his skull. He was also shot in the chest, they said.

Two U.S. officials on Tuesday told NBC News that officials involved in the raid had discussed what to do with "death photos" of bin Laden in meetings over the past several months.

Neither official disclosed what the outcome of the discussions was but noted that everyone knew the ultimate decision would rest with the White House. The same official said he did not expect a decision Tuesday, but said it would not surprise him that much, NBC News reported. 

Meanwhile, U.S. officials were balancing that skepticism with the sensitivities that might be inflamed by showing images and video of his burial at sea.

"We are going to do everything we can to make sure that nobody has any basis to try to deny that we got Osama bin Laden," John Brennan, Obama's counterterrorism adviser, said Monday. He said the U.S. will "share what we can because we want to make sure that not only the American people but the world understand exactly what happened."

In July 2003, the U.S. took heat but also quieted most conspiracy theorists by releasing graphic photos of the corpses of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein's two powerful sons to prove American forces had killed them.

So far, the U.S. has cited evidence that satisfied the Navy SEAL force, and at least most of the world, that they had the right man in Abbottabad, Pakistan.

The helicopter-borne raiding squad that swarmed the luxury compound identified bin Laden by appearance. A woman in the compound who was identified as his wife was said to have called out bin Laden's name in the melee.

Officials produced a quick DNA match from his remains that they said established bin Laden's identity, even absent the other techniques, with 99.9 percent certainty. U.S. officials also said bin Laden was identified through photo comparisons and other methods.

Tellingly, an al-Qaida spokesman, in vowing vengeance against America, called him a martyr, offering no challenge to the U.S. account of his death.

The burial from an aircraft carrier in the North Arabian Sea was videotaped aboard the ship, according to a senior defense official who spoke on condition of anonymity because a decision on whether to release the video was not final. The official said it was highly likely that the video, along with photographs of bin Laden's body, would be made public in coming days.

Officials said bin Laden was buried at sea because it was the best option, given tight time constraints. Under Islamic tradition, Muslims must be buried within 24 hours. Transferring the body to another country for interment could have taken too long, officials said.

"The burial of bin Laden's remains was done in strict conformance with Islamist precepts and practices," said Brennan.

The body was transported to the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, which brought him to his final resting place.

The U.S. military said preparations for burial began at 1:10 a.m. ET and were completed at 2 a.m. ET.

His body was washed before being covered.

His corpse was lowered toward the sea on one of the aircraft carrier's elevators.

"The body was placed in a weighted bag. A military officer read prepared religious remarks which were translated into Arabic by a native speaker," a U.S. official said.

"After the words were complete, the body was placed on a prepared flat board, tipped up, whereupon the deceased's body eased into the sea."

Islamic scholars, however, challenged U.S. assertions that a burial at sea was an appropriate fate for a Muslim who had died on land.

The act denied al-Qaida any sort of burial shrine for their slain leader. Once again, bin Laden had vanished, but this time at the hands of the United States and in a way that ensures he is gone forever.

White House offers more on SEAL raid in Pakistan as a few details are disputed

WASHINGTON — Osama bin Laden was not armed when a U.S. Navy SEAL raiding party confronted him during an assault on his compound in Pakistan, the White House said Tuesday.

White House press secretary Jay Carney acknowledged that bin Laden did not have a weapon even though administration officials have said that bin Laden resisted during the 40-minute raid. Bin Laden was shot in the head and in the chest during the encounter.

Carney said bin Laden's wife "rushed the U.S. assaulter" and was shot in the leg but not killed, contrary to what a White House official said on Monday, when reports said bin Laden used her as a shield. 

Carney declined to offer further details on bin Laden's behavior during the raid. Resistance did not require a firearm, he said.

He said the decision to kill rather than capture bin Laden was made by forces on the ground, not by the White House, which earlier authorized the rehearsed raid that included contingincies for but no expectations of capture.

U.S. forces faced a firefight throughout the raid.

"We expected a great deal of resistance and were met with a great deal of resistance. There were many other people who were armed in the compound," Carney said.

There had been conflicting information about the circumstances under which the al-Qaida leader was killed. Some reports said that bin Laden was armed and that the woman was used as a human shield.

Describing the raid, Carney said two other families lived in the bin Laden compound in the outskirts of Abbottabad, some 60 miles from the capital of Islamabad. One family lived on the first floor of the bin Laden building and one family in a second building. One team began the operation on the first floor of the bin Laden house and worked their way to the third floor; a second team cleared the separate building.

Carney said Navy SEALs encountered two al-Qaida couriers on the first floor of the compound building holding bin Laden and his family. A woman caught in crossfire there died, he said.

Bin Laden and his family were on the building's third floor.

"There was concern that bin Laden would oppose the capture operation and indeed he resisted," Carney said, reading from a White House narrative obtained by NBC News.

After the firefight, Carney said, noncombatants were moved "to a safe location" as a damaged U.S. helicopter, one of two that landed at the compound, was destroyed.

Earlier reports also noted that as Navy Seals swept through bin Laden's massive compound, they handcuffed those they encountered with plastic zip ties as they continued to pursue their target, code-named Geronimo.

In addition to bin Laden, one of his sons, Khalid, was killed in the raid, Brennan said. Bin Laden's wife was shot in the calf but survived, a U.S. official said Monday. Also killed were bin Laden's trusted personal courier Sheikh Abu Ahmed and his brother, both earlier identified as two of bin Laden's al-Qaida facilitators, and an unidentified woman.

Twenty-three children and nine women were in the compound at the time of the assault and were turned over to Pakistani authorities, said a U.S. official who requested anonymity to discuss an intelligence matter. The SEAL team believes Bin Laden had lived at the compound for six years, the official said.

The BBC reported that the Pakistani intelligence agency, ISI, released raid details that differed from White House version.

Among them:

• There were 17-18 people in the compound at the time of the attack.
• Americans took away one person still alive, possibly a Bin Laden son.
• Those who survived the attack included a wife, a daughter and eight to nine other children, not apparently Bin Laden's; all had their hands tied by the Americans.
• A surviving Yemeni wife said they had moved to the compound a few months ago.
• Bin Laden's daughter, aged 12 or 13, saw her father shot.

U.S. officials deny taking a prisoner, stating "the only person who left the compound besides the U.S. forces was Osama Bin Laden's body."

The Pakistani agency also told the BBC, "U.S. helicopters entered Pakistani airspace making use of blind spots in the radar coverage due to hilly terrain."

An ISI official told the BBC the bin Laden compound in Abbottabad was raided several years ago but "was not on our radar" since then.

Frm a personal standpoint im really worried n scared now one coz there may be counter attacks two i have family in pak so im really scared what us may do to pak now
If they invade then there cud be a world war 3 n its scary we all know how us are sayin to pak if u knew osama was in pak y not tell coz us has given so much aid to pak
Honestly i dnt give a damn abt pak government there money hungry greedy folks they can root in hell zardari shud be shot dead

Baz I know how you feel. Its a very scary thought. Pakistan has become target #1 now and then the US. :/ May God protect all innocent lives.

Good riddance! May other terrorists follow suit and face harsher deaths.

I understand the unenviable position of the people there. Most wouldnt even know what role their govt and army played ! The govt there has kept its own people who elected it , in the dark.  Violence and deceit doesnt pay in the long run.I do hope and pray that people start seeing good reason and peace gets a chance.
