Madhuri Dixit mourns MF Husain's death

MF Husain's muse Madhuri Dixit, who fascinated him so much that he became a filmmaker and cast her in his debut work, is very sad over the iconic painter's demise away from home.

"... It's a very sad day for me today... His paintings not only came from his heart but also from the knowledge he had about various topics," she told a TV news channel.

Husain made his Bollywood directorial debut in 2000 with 'Gaja Gamini' starring Madhuri and Shah Rukh Khan.

Asked whether Indian artists should have rallied around him with more enthusiasm when he was targeted by right-wing groups, she said, "I think something should have been done in an organised way. Maybe something should have been done, something should have been said. But it didn't happen."

On his stay abroad, she said, "I am sure that he did miss coming back. He didn't say so openly to me but I knew from the way he used to talk, remember India, talk about the different celebrations... He used to talk about all these things.

"That's the sadness that I feel for him that he was born in India but couldn't breathe his last here."

RIP Mr. Hussain!-

Noted painter and legend in his field, Maqbool Fida Hussain passed away today of a heart attack in Royal Brampton Hospital, London.

Noted painter and legend in his field, Maqbool Fida Hussain passed away today of a heart attack in Royal Brampton Hospital, London.

A contemporary and progressive artist, Hussainji has had phenomenal contribution in bringing India to actually feature as a significant contributor in the field of art over his years of creativity. However, due to the infamous controversy, arising from his disputed dishonorable paintings of some Hindu deities, the iconic artist had spend the last years of his life in a self imposed exile since 2006, on foreign soil. Despite his more recent efforts to return to the land of his birth, where he is heard to have wanted to breathe his last, Hussain was not granted permission owing security matters and politico miscellanea.

At his demise however, PM Manmohan Singh and President Smt. Pratibha Patil have expressed deep grief, lamenting the loss as 'national'.

M.F. Hussain has given Bollywood critically acclaimed although scantily popular works like Gaja Gamini (starring his long time muse Madhuri Dixit) and Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities (starring Tabu, and a debut for actor Kunal Kapoor). Passing away today, at the age of 95 years, from a bout of illness that the renowned artist was suffering from for a month now, he leaves behind, many with heavy hearts in tinsel town.

Condolences as expressed by some noted celebrities [(c) Twitter & Reuters]:

Kunal Kapoor: Deeply saddened by the news about Hussain saab. He was not only a great artist but an incredible human being. His passion and love for life was contagious and unparalleled. May his soul rest in peace.

Shabana Azmi: He was a prolific painter. He is someone who is born once in 100 years. I last met him through a video-conference. He was deeply moved when we told him we will try to bring him back to India. He missed India.

Abhishek Bachchan: Very sad to hear of the passing of M F Hussain saab. A wonderful person and a great artist. May his soul rest in peace.

Madhur Bhandarkar: Sad to hear renowned legendary artist M F Husain passes away, RIP!!!

Javed Akhtar: I think many people realise the importance of artists in this country because of him. His contribution to Indian art has been totally unprecedented.

We at BollyCurry mourn the death of this man who shall ever be a source of pride to the national heritage, and shall be remembered by, despite and beyond the unwarranted controversies that marked his last years. RIP Hussain sahab! Author: Naseem J. Graphics: Nadia M.

Husain never wanted to offend anyone, says Madhuri Dixit

Headlines Today Bureau | New Delhi, June 9, 2011 | Updated 23:03 IST
Husian passed away on Thursday at a hospital in London.

The legend, M.F. Husain, lives on in the hearts of his admirers. One of them is 'world's most beautiful woman' - Madhuri Dixit Nene. The title was bestowed on the actor by none other than the celebrated painter himself.

Dixit, who spoke to Headlines Today from the US, was 'shocked' as her secretary broke the news at 5.00 am. "I live in the US. There is a time difference. It was shocking. There was no indication of something like that happening. It's very very sad. It's a sad day for me," Madhuri told Headlines Today.

Sharing her memories with the painter, she said, the last time she met him was 'when he was working on something - 100 years of Indian cinema'. "He was so excited," she said, adding, 'he was a great talent'.

On being asked if Husain shared his feeling about what he felt about some groups being offended at his work, Madhuri said, "We never openly had discussions'he lived nearly 100 years (most of them in India). He never had any intention to offend anybody's feelings. He wanted to put his feelings on the canvas. He has respect for all religions. He missed India - Diwali, Holi and colours. He missed being in India."

One being reminded that one of the greatest painters called her the most beautiful woman in the world, Madhuri said, it was his 'child-like quality and his thirst to know more that kept him going'.

"Painting was his passion. Painting was life for him. It's is difficult to put in one word about him but he was a excellent person," she said.

Would Husain would figure anywhere if Madhuri were to write her memoir? "Definitely," she said.

On being asked if Husain got a raw deal in India, Madhuri said, "Though some of his friends and artists tried to raise voice, I think it should have been a little more organised. That was not done."

It's one of the saddest days of my life: Madhuri

By: Midday Team Date: 2011-06-10 Place: Mumbai

Husain's muse recalls her cherished association with the 95-year-old, who she says was a child inside

Husainsaab leaves back so many memories. The most endearing thing about him was his zest for life. He was a child inside. He would keep telling me, 'Wah, you are my favourite,' like a child. It is one of the saddest days of my life.

M F Husain with Madhuri Dixit after the completion of his film Gaja Gamini

Apart from being a wonderful artist of course, he was such a spontaneous human being. There are so many memories attached to him. Every time he would call me, he would ask 'Hows mother India doing?'

Mother India

After Arin (her first son) was born, he had named me mother India. I have been in constant touch with him. But since the last two years, we could talk only once in two or three months, because he was traveling a lot. Whenever he would call, he would say, 'Where are you? I am here'. And I would say where is this here? You are always on the move, London, Qatar, some other place...

Unique man
What a personality! He was 95 and not once one would feel that he was that old. He had so many goals. He told me that he is keen on making a comedy movie. I would think that when I am 95, will I even have half his energy, if at all I am alive?

He was truly a creative person. I have never heard him complaining or cribbing about anything in life. He would spend most of his time dreaming about what he could create, and what he could do next. That kept him going and gave him so much energy. Truly a unique man.

So many memories
He burned so bright and then he went away just like that. My son remembers him very fondly. So many memories, so many memories. I don't know how to put the experience of meeting such a man in words. He had lived for a century, he had seen so much; he had traveled so much, overcome so much.

Life of India

Only thing that saddened him that he couldn't go back to India. Once or twice he mentioned to me that he missed Diwali, Holi and other religious events that happened in India. He would keep saying India is so lovely and I can't see it any more. I think a corner of his heart ached to go back home. He was from Pandharpur and he wanted to go back there too. That's only the saddest thing. Otherwise he lived a full, creative life.
As told to Shubha Shetty-Saha

Fond memories
Reema Rakesh Nath, the producer of Mohabbat (starring Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Kapoor and Akshaye Khanna) where MF Husain made his debut as an actor, remembers him fondly. "I had to convince Husainsaab to do that scene. He played himself in the film and the scene was an art gallery where Madhuri meets Akshaye.

Husainsaab suggested that all the paintings in the gallery should be his, to lend authenticity to the scene. It was really a huge honour to have him with us."

Kunal Kapoor, who worked in M F Husain's directorial venture Meenaxi: A Tale Of Three Cities says, "He was an incredible man and it was my good fortune that I had a chance to interact with him personally and professionally. You meet a man like him once in a lifetime. His passion, zest and love for life was unparalleled. He will be deeply missed."

Shreyas Talpade, who was approached by MF Husain to play him in a biography, recollects, "The meetings with Husainsaab have been the most unforgettable moments of my life. He took me to the places where he grew up and used to paint film hoardings. He invited me to an Eid party at his ancestral home, where I had one of the best paaya soups with him. I will miss his energy, enthusiasm, passion for life."

"I asked him once why he doesn't wear slippers, and he narrated an incident when he wasn't allowed in a hotel once. So he decided to not to wear slippers at all. He told me that it's natural acupuncture and allowed him to sit on his knees and paint," said Talpade.

Husain was pucca Indian at heart: Madhuri Dixit

Afsana Ahmed | Jun 10, 2011
Hard to describe Husain in one line: Madhuri
M F Husain has painted beautiful women, but the one he was most enamoured by was undoubtedly Bollywood's dhak dhak girl Madhuri Dixit. The actress who is based in Denver now paid a tribute to, probably her most ardent admirer, so far in. Saddened by the unexpected demise of the legend, Madhuri conveyed her deep grief over phone from Denver. "I will fall short of words to express myself on this legend. He shared a very beautiful bond with me. I will always miss him. May his soul rest in peace," said the actress.

Calling him a 'jewel we have lost forever', Madhuri said it's incredible to live almost 100 years so actively and see India grow along with him. "He was a pucca Indian at heart. It's very sad whatever has happened. He missed being here, especially celebrating the colourful festivals in India," lamented Madhuri, who worked in Husain's direction in Gaja Gamini.

The actress further remembered M F Husain as a man full of child-like qualities. "Age never touched him. We were in touch always. He would travel a lot and would call me from different parts of the world to share smallest and big details about his life and profession. It was so sweet," the actress recalled fondly. "I had invited him to come over to Denver several times, but Husain Saab was always busy. I wish I could have met him once," said the actress.

The whole world knows that the enamoured nonagenerian paid glowing tribute to the diva in several ways in the form of a movie, a life-size painting and an exhibition on her name. But Madhuri laughed as she remembered all the compliments he saved for her in person.

"Husain saab was very shy in complimenting me directly. He would cleverly disguise it in the form of praising my expressions and moments from my films. He must have given me more thousand compliments but the most glowing one is where he called me the 'complete woman'," shared Madhuri with pride.

Madhuri Dixit and Tabu recall...

Posted: Fri Jun 10 2011, 03:35 hrs

He was 85 years old when I first met him and I always marveled at his energy. He was always planning ahead and appeared tireless. I once told him to sit down, relax and have a cup of tea, so he said, "What you are asking me to do is not relaxation, it's a punishment. Painting relaxes me." I also asked him if his feet hurt since he never wore shoes. He told me that his feet now felt like shoes. I don't know how many times he saw Hum Aapke Hain Kaun. Only he knows the final count. Working in Gaja Gamini was an unique experience. He wanted each frame to look like a painting. He was the director but was always the artist first. I spoke to him three months back. He was as excited as a child about his latest project about 100 years of Indian cinema. This ability to always be in the moment was uniquely Husain saab.
