Yes, I am just full of shocks this week. I thought this story was long forgotten, but I have now decided to continue it even though it's been forever since I've last updated. I am dedicating this story to my loyal reader, Ramya, who requested that I write another update for this FF. And I am going to when I get the time. For now I am reposting the previous parts and have made some minor tweaks in the story. For new readers, I hope you enjoy this story, if not, for my defense I had written it awhile ago---it's not one of my best. 😕😆

Hume Tumse Hua Hai Pyaar...

Character Sketch:

The Walias

Jai Walia: Age twenty-seven, a well valued and principle young man who lives a decent, middle-class life. Losing both parents at the age of sixteen, he became a parent to his two younger siblings, fulfilling each and every one of their needs, never letting them realize the loss of their mother and father in their lives. They were immediately given custody to his aunt, Billo Singhania, who willfully took them in. She created a small little world for them full of love and warmth. However that did not last for long. Three years later their aunt died from lung cancer leaving Jai and his siblings orphaned all over again. Acknowledged as a legal adult under the law, Jai Walia became the caretaker of his own brother and sister and diligently worked to support them. He works a simple job as a manager for a smooth running hotel in the town they live, Mount Abu; living a struggling life by trying to raise his siblings on his salary and taking up his responsibilities toward them.

Saahil Walia: Age nineteen, going on twenty, a mischievous young boy who's always looking for fun. He finds it his duty to be the clown he is so he can bring some kind of happiness into his family's life. Not that they are not happy, but there is always that feeling of strain on their lives that never seems to leave them'

Anu Walia: Age sixteen, a cute young girl that is easily loved by everyone. She's the apple of her Jai bhaiya's eyes and is cherished greatly by him. Having a good heart, she is always kind and polite.

The Dixits

Nishikant Dixit: Age fifty, a middle aged widower who lives a classy, rich life. He owns plenty of businesses and lives in Mumbai, raising his daughter. He can be a snob at times and gravely arrogant towards those below him, but he does have a good side to him that only his daughter seems to see.

Bani Dixit: Age twenty-two, a charming beautiful young woman who has completely taken after her mother, looks and personality. She has a heart of gold and is just towards everyone. Despite being a rich man's daughter and being pampered her whole life she is not the normal rich brat a person believes a rich kid to be. In fact, she is far from that. She does not allow herself to be spoiled silly like how her father always tries to do and wishes for an average life a person would live. High society parties, designer wears, jewels, and money is not what she fantasizes about. Instead she wants a simple, peaceful, and love thrived life in which she will be content with. Even though she has everything, she also has nothing. Losing her mother at a very young age, she has been very lonesome and although her father tries to the greatest extents to make her happy, she does not feel complete. It is as if something is missing from her life'. Something big.

Other Characters

Kiran Sharma: Bani's mausi, eight years junior to her niece's late mother and her older sister, age forty-one. A widow, she is a beautiful and kind woman whom everyone dots on. She is a typical mother figure and loves children to her heart's greatest extent as she has none of her own. She moved from the city life three years after her sister's death once she lost her own husband in a plane crash. Within those three years in which her husband had spent much time overseas for business, Kiran temporarily moved into her late sister's husband's home in which she took care of her niece like her own daughter. She now lives in Mount Abu and has been living there for many years. She occasionally visits her favorite and only niece and sometimes receives short, brief visits from Bani and Nishikant, her aloof brother-in-law.

Rano Oberoi: Age twenty-two, best friend of Bani. She is the typical best friend a girl needs. She was born and raised in the town of Mount Abu and as she grew older she went to the city for further studies where she met and became lifelong friends with Bani. She stayed in the city for four years until she moved back to her home town, but loyally continued to remain in touch with her friend.

Chapter 1:

He sighs in complete boredom despite the energetic festivity surrounding him; the colorful lights, lavish decorations, countless game booths, entertaining rides, and the laughter and screams of delight filling the air around that creates a joyful atmosphere. Despite of his reluctant behavior in participating in the town's fair, he smiles as he watches his baby sister excitedly look around, eager to see what she wishes to do next. Her eyes twinkle brightly and the sweet smile on her lips never goes away, seeming as if it is permanently etched there.

I guess it was worth coming to the fair after all, he muses to himself. Letting his eyes wander elsewhere, he catches his other sibling, his younger brother, fooling along with friends in teasing the girls around. Just as he opens his mouth to call out to him, about to demand that he put a stop to his inappropriate behavior, he hears his little sister speak enthusiastically to him.

"Jai Bhaiya! Hum kya khare? There is so much to choose from, what should we do first," she asks for his opinion. Jai turns back to give his sister his complete attention and affectionately places his hand on her head.

Jai: Whatever you want princess, we're here for you.

His sister smiles delightfully, pleased by his answer. She tugs on his hand and immediately points up ahead.

"Mujhe wahan jhaana," she exclaims. Jai looks up, following the direction of her hand, and his smile fades on seeing what she directs to. He hurriedly denies her.

Jai: Anu, you know you are not allowed then why do you ask?
Anu: Bhaiya, please! I am not a child anymore, I am almost seventeen.
Jai: You hardly anywhere near that age yet Anu'... Besides, you are still young. I won't allow it. You will get hurt.
Anu: Don't be silly bhaiya, it's not that high. It's perfectly safe as well. See how many people they have around working it?

Jai: I still do not feel comfortable having you go.

Anu: But I'm ready! (insisting)

Jai: But I'm not. (shooting her down)

Anu: It's just a Ferris wheel, it's not like it's the Grand Canyon. (softly comments, upset)

Jai: (tired in fighting with her) I said no, so it means no.

Seeing her become downcast by this quickly makes him feel terrible about himself, but he knew he still wasn't going to give in. He just wasn't alright with her dealing with heights....not ever since she.....

Bringing his arm soothingly around her, he steers her attention somewhere else.

Jai: Look over there, they're selling cotton candy. I know how much you love those. Let's get you one and then we'll find another ride. How's that sound?

Anu smiles feebly at his attempt in cheering her up again and she willingly goes along with him to the cotton candy booth. As they proceed on over there, Jai smacks his younger brother on his head, bringing his attention over to him.

Jai: Behave. (warns him)

His younger brother simmers down by this, knowing his brother means business, and immediately stops his friends from harassing the girls any longer.

They arrive at the small shop and Anu wonders loudly of what flavor to get. Jai in the meanwhile withdraws his wallet from his pocket, ready to take out his money to pay. Hearing giggling and shushing momentarily diverts his attention elsewhere and he follows the soft noise of the tinkling of bangles nearby. Looking up, he is temporarily struck by what he sees across from him...

A young beautiful girl with olive smooth skin, silky long black hair, and big expressive eyes captures his gaze immediately. He looks closer, noting her physical appearance. She has gorgeous, captivating hazel eyes that he could just lose himself in....'overlapped with long black eyelashes... a cute small button like nose, that looks slightly red---perhaps from the cold weather.... rosy red cheeks that gives her face a lovely glow ....and soft petal like lips that are pretty pink. She wears a complimenting white fitting churidar, which displays most of her feminine curves, making her seem like a radiant angel.....

Jai can feel his chest swell on her appearance and his heart rate sent to a frenzy. His insides thudding hard, he holds in his breath as she giggles at something her friend said and casually looks ahead of her, right at him. Their eyes meet in a full lock gaze, her warm honey ones with his steel gray. Her giggles subsiding, she slowly becomes quiet and stares back at him with possibly the same mixed feelings he was experiencing. Her cheeks burning red, she snaps herself out of it and shyly removes her eyes away. She nudges her friend and softly murmurs something to her. Her friend, someone who he is familiar with as well, whines about what she says, but she takes her by the hand and grabs her along with her, going away with her pink cotton candy held tight in her hand.

"Bhaiya .... Hello... Earth to Bhaiya," he hears as he sees a pair of fingers snapping before his eyes. Bringing himself back to reality, Jai switches his focus onto his sister instead, but the thoughts of the girl still linger in the back of his mind.

Jai: Kya hua?
Anu: Bhai, I have been trying to get your attention for the last minute. What happened? Where were you lost?

Jai: (embarrassed) Nothing happened. I guess I just dazed off. Sorry. Now what is it? Have you picked a flavor?

Anu: Yup.
Jai: (raising a brow) I'm assuming it's blue. I don't understand why you take forever if you're always just going to pick the same flavor.

Anu: (giggles) Bhaiya, you know me too well. But actually this time I didn't pick blue. I thought I needed a change so I chose pink instead. See'.

She pushes her cotton candy into his view and startles him with her choice. His mind automatically begins to reel back to the girl once again...... Even she had pink. Feeling a rough shake on his arm knocks him out of his thoughts.

Jai: What happened?

Anu: You're asking me? I should be asking you' Why do you keep blanking out on me?
Jai: (shaking his head, clearing his mind) ' Maybe I've just had a long day.
Anu: (softly smiles) Pay the guy, we'll go on a couple of rides, and we'll be at home in no time.

Jai remembers that he had taken his wallet out before he got fully distracted and takes out the amount of money needed to pay for the cotton candy. He wraps his arm around his sister's shoulder and takes an offering bite of her candy. As they walk through the fair, Jai constantly thinks about the girl and muses over why he can't stop thinking of her and of the strange effect she had on him. After all, she is just a girl. He looks around, wondering if she is still around, but with this crowd it'd be a miracle if he were to see her again.

*****************************************************************

"Bani, what is wrong with you? Why are you in such a rush to get away? I know the seller was a little creepy looking, but that doesn't mean he's going to harm you. Everyone here at Mont Abu are very nice people," her friend informs her as she continues to whisk her away from the shop.

Bani proceeds to blush hot red, not able to forget the way that man had looked at her, seeming intrigued by her. She can still feel the strong impact of his intense eyes on her even now. Normally she would have properly dealt with anyone who had looked at her in a particular way. She was used to that kind of behavior from men back in the city. But he..... he is different. He didn't look at her as if he were only seeking for some past time fun or if she was a piece of meat. It is hard to explain really how he had looked at her .... but those beautiful eyes of his held honesty in them, telling her he had no bad intentions.

Besides, it doesn't help very much that he is by far the most handsomest man she has laid her eyes on. ...... Electrifying gray eyes..... chiseled like features .... jet black hair .....broad shoulders .....muscular built arms, not too bulgy like how guys tend to overdo it, but perfect..... a well fit physique of a body.... He fits the tall, dark, and handsome look to the tee.

Embarrassed by her thoughts, Bani flushes even darker and mentally slaps herself for thinking like a foolish girl.

"Bani, are you even listening to me," her friend questions her in a demanding tone. Bani stops in her steps and turns to look at her.

Bani: Of course I am Rano. '... and I'm sorry for behaving so weirdly. I wasn't scared of that cotton candy man' I was just'...(blushing again)
Rano: What's wrong? Why are you so red?

Bani: (hesitant) ...There was a man..... and.....

Rano: (sighs, rolls her eyes) Please don't even start. I'm getting kind of tired of all this attention you get from men. Seriously, am I really that bad looking that no one looks at me?

Bani: Shut up Rano. You're beautiful and you know that too. I'd think someone who has already had four boyfriends and is on her fifth would know that by now.

Rano: (blushes herself) Yes, but the occasional eye stares would be nice once in awhile.

Bani: (rolling her own eyes) Believe me, you do not want that sort of attention. It's unnerving.

She begins in walking again, Rano following along beside her.

Rano: At least tell me if he was some kind of weirdo or not....

Bani: ..... He's not a weirdo. (embarrassed on the upcoming topic)

Rano: Okay, well what is he then?
Bani: ..... He's just a guy. Forget about it.
Rano: Oh no you don't Bani Dixit.... You tell me right now. As your duty to me of being a best friend, you must.

Bani: I don't know anything about him except for his looks.
Rano: Well that's what I'm saying. Describe him for me. I might just know him.
Bani: (pink all over again) ....He's cute.Very cute. Now end of story.

******************************************************************

Seeing Saahil coming out of nowhere and murmur in his ear slightly startles Jai. "Run Bhai, Roshini Chopra's on your tail." Swearing under his breath, he says back, "Buy me some time. Distract her." Saahil nods and quickly walks back to Roshini who walks on a fast pace to reach up to Jai and Anu.

Anu: Bhai, for how long are you going to keep avoiding Roshini like this?

Jai: For the rest of my life if I have to'. Now come with me.

Taking his sister's hand in his, he rushes her into moving away from sight. He pulls her aside next to a shaded area in between two booths. Both brother and sister see Saahil successfully diverting Roshini away after some time.

Anu: We're safe.....

Jai: Not yet...She's still leaving...and if i know her well enough, she'll still be looking....

They wait silently for Roshini to leave the area and go away far enough that she won't be able to find Jai again. Jai wastes his time by merely watching others immerse themselves in fun and games. One ride attracts his notice and he's just about to suggest to his sister that they should try going on it next, knowing she would enjoy it, until he catches the sight of the same girl from before. She sits beside her friend in the small seater of the ride that spins them around in circles. He watches in silent awe as she laughs sweetly in enjoyment and her eyes sparkle. He takes a moment in taking this in, keeping the sight of her brightly lit face etched into his mind.

Anu: Bhaiya, let's go. She's gone. And I'm sure she won't find us again.

Tugging on his hand, Anu leads him out back into the midst of the fair while Jai watches the view of the girl slowly fade away behind him.....

************************************************************

Slamming the car door behind her shut, she waves a farewell at her friend who tells her to make sure to call the next day to make plans. She promises her and walks up the black pavement driveway, leading her to the front porch of the house.

"Bani beta, is that you," she hears an affectionate motherly voice call out to her. Bani closes the front door behind her and walks into the warm home. She catches a woman sitting on the sofa, her back towards her, just as she arrives in the living room. Approaching her from behind, she places her arms around the woman and leans her chin onto her shoulder.

Bani: Yes Kiran Mausi. It's me.

Her aunt rubs one of her arms sweetly and asks her, "How was the fair baby?"

Bani: It was great' I wish you would have gone.

Kiran: (chuckles) Have you thought of my age sweetheart?

Bani: I hardly count forty-one as old, mausi.

Kiran: Accha baba, thanks for the compliment. Maybe I will go to the spring fair next year with you instead. Now go on and get ready for bed. It's quite late.

Bani: Ji. Good night.

Bani receives a sound kiss as a response and wanders off towards her room. She dresses into her nightwear and after brushing her teeth, she snuggles into her bed. The last thought she thinks of before drifting into the depths of sleep is a pair of haunting gray eyes......

Chapter 2:

Bani wakes up to the morning sun rays peeping through her bedroom curtains that light up most of her room. Disgruntled, she rubs her eyes and yawns softly as she looks over to the alarm clock, resting on the nightstand, and reads the blaring red digits. It's only seven in the morning… She still has another hour before getting up. Knowing that she won't be able to fall asleep from the sunbeams, she lazily gets up from her bed and approaches her window. She raises her arms up, gripping onto the curtains, ready to draw them close, but something prevents her from doing so….

On the driveway she sees her Kiran Mausi's side profile, smiling and talking to another person, a man to be certain. The man dressed freshly in a black polo paired with rugged blue jeans, hanging nicely from his waist, hands over a plastic bag over to her aunt who thankfully accepts it from him. She watches Kiran kiss him affectionately on his head before she bids him goodbye, waving at him while he walks on back to the sidewalk. Curiously she keeps her eyes fixed on him, not understanding why she senses a familiarity in him; she is unable to see him clearly as his back is faced to her. Just as he arrives at his motorbike parked off to the side and sits himself down onto it, revealing himself to her, she sees why….

He is the same young man from the fair last night, the one who managed to leave her completely breathless by just one look into his drowning eyes. Immediately Bani feels herself get strangely warm all around and turn pink in the face by his dashing appearance. No doubt he is attractively handsome; she would not be surprised to know if he has a usual band of women following him around.

She leans against the window frame and watches as he starts of his bike, kicking it out of place, and zooms down the neighborhood street. She listens as the motor grows fainter by each passing second…..

"Bani, sweetheart! Wake up baby, it's already seven o'clock. Get ready and then come have some breakfast," she hears her aunt call out for her attention. She snaps out of her innocent daze and hurriedly paces herself in getting fresh, thoughts of him lingering in her head. She finds herself wanting to know about him, ignoring the sensible side of her which warns her that he shouldn't matter to her. Yet, learning a little about him wouldn't do any harm, would it? Knowing where she can easily get this information from, Bani pulls her robe closed around her and makes her way downstairs….

*********************************************************************

Bani pecks her mausi's cheek after wishing her a, "Good Morning." Her aunt smiles back and softly nudges her over to the table, telling her to sit on down at the kitchen table while she finishes up breakfast. Bani nervously hesitates for awhile, fiddling with the tie of her robe as she bites down on her lower lip. She watches her aunt move around the kitchen, grabbing things here and there, completely focused on making Breakfast. She does not know how to approach her with the topic, but knows it'd be better to mention it now rather than later….

Bani: Kiran Mausi?

Kiran: Yes sweetheart… (cooing back at her)

Bani: ….Who was it that dropped by earlier this morning? …I saw you speak to someone.

Kiran: Oh… so I have a peeping Tom in my very own house.

Bani immediately blushes in embarrassment and hurriedly speaks to deny her.

Bani: Nahi to… I was just curious.

She listens to Kiran giggle at her abashed reply and turns around, facing her with two plates containing toast and scrambled eggs. She places one neatly before her niece while putting the other in front of herself. Kiran sits down after pouring orange juice for them both.

Kiran: Don't be embarrassed Bani beta, I was only teasing….

Bani, however, continues to remain blushed.

Kiran: The person you saw is a boy that I have known and seen grow for the past twenty four years, ever since I had moved here…. He isn't a boy anymore when I come to think of it… He has grown nicely into a young man. I'm still unable to believe he isn't the same little toddler who would never leave me alone for a second. His family was my first neighbor until they moved a few years later to another part of town. When we lived next to each other, he always used to swing by offering his help for anything. Be it with fixing around the house or even cooking along beside me. … I guess in a way you can say he has been somewhat of a son to me all these years.(she rambles)

Bani: (intrigued) He still comes to visit? (referring to him coming this morning)

Kiran: (nods her head) Yes, whenever he can. He makes sure of that. Either it is to come by and give me company or to attend to all of my needs…. He takes care of my errands for me most of the time…. Today he had gotten us eggs for breakfast since we have run out.

Bani stares down at her plate, eying the scrambled eggs…

Bani:… Who is he? ... What's his name?----Just so I know whenever I do meet him. (quickly adding)

Kiran: (smiles understandingly) Jai Walia…. He is a boy. … I am sure you will fancy him as well just like the rest of the town... Perhaps you have seen his younger brother and sister around?… Saahil and Anu Walia…. Saahil attends the university right by your art school. And Anu has an interest into art just like you… She will occasionally drop by the school and look at the exhibits there.

She ponders over these two names, questioning herself whether she knows them or not. So far she hasn't had the pleasure to meet them personally. But from now one she will keep a look out for Anu if she ever does come across her at school.

Kiran: She is a few years younger than you, but is great company. A true diamond that girl… You will become friends easily with her, I know that.

Bani simply smiles as a response, nodding her head, and resumes back to eating her toast and eggs. Telling herself to let the topic drop as she has satisfied her innocent little query, at least she thought so...

**********************************************************************************************

Jai hurriedly fastens the buttons to his white dress shirt as he wanders around his bedroom, gathering his things to take along. He fumbles through his wardrobe, trying to find a suitable tie to wear and exasperatedly picks one at random as he does not find the one in particular he was searching for. Just as he pulls it around his neck, he hears his bedroom door swing open revealing his two siblings who stand by the doorway.

Before he can even open his mouth to ask them what they want, they immediately begin in hassling him with bombarding questions. Jai looks back and forth from one to the other, trying to keep up with their fast paced moving mouths, not able to follow their words. He agitatedly growls and yells at both, silencing them instantly.

Jai: One at a time you two! I only have one set of ears!

Saahil takes advantage of the hesitant silence that he and his sister create, easily cutting off Anu from speaking.

Saahil: Bhaiya, Arjun wants to know if I can go on over to his place right after my last class.

Jai: Why does he need you there?

Saahil: Well he's having a party tonight and he says he needs help in setting things up. So I might not be back until twelve.

Jai: (grims) I don't know kid. You should be focusing on your studies instead. I don't think going out to parties is what you should really be doing.

Saahil: (groans) Come on Bhai, having fun once in awhile won't hurt. Besides, I'm doing well in all my classes. You had even said so…

Jai continues to look unsure about the topic. Anu shakes her head at her brother, mouthing to him to not allow it. Saahil nudges his sister hard, glaring at her.

Anu: Bhaiya, (speaking up) you know as well as I do that he won't be back until later than twelve, oversleep the next morning, and will fall back in his studies again.

Saahil: Why do you always burst in on my fun Anu? Why can't you for once support your brother?

Anu: I won't support my brother if he's going to go out, get drunk, fool with girls, and come back only to neglect his studies all over again.

Saahil: You are such a pest-----

Again the two quarrel, rambling over their differences until Jai cannot take it any longer and pushes them apart.

Jai: Quit it you two. You are driving me insane. Firstly Saahil, do not call your sister a pest. And be back by eleven or I will make sure you never see sunlight ever again.

Saahil: (smiles, relieved) Thanks Bhaiya!

He hugs his brother before fleeing off excitedly and only after punching his sister on her arm.

Anu: Bhaiya! (whining to him)

Jai: Saahil! (warning)

Saahil merely chuckles and quickly vanishes from the room. Jai sighs and then looks over to his sister who still stands before him, looking at him with innocent eyes.

Jai: Aab tumhe kya chaaye? (trans: Now what do you want?)

Anu: Bhaiya… I was wondering if I could go to the movies downtown after school and----

Jai: Absolutely not. (cutting her off)

Anu: Bhaiya…You haven't even let me finished saying what I wanted to say.

Jai: You don't need to because I already have made my decision.

Anu: Bhaiya, please. (pleading)

Jai: Anu, you know very well that I don't want you going off anywhere by yourself.

Anu: But Trishna and Radhika will be with me. Their parents are absolutely fine with them going.

Jai: Well you are my responsibility, not theirs. And I won't allow it.

Anu: Jai Bhaiya, this isn't fair…(tears glistening in her eyes) Why don't you let me doing anything? I am not a child anymore. I am a young woman… I can take care of myself now.

Jai: You are still a child. (shutting her down) A girl like you shouldn't be going off anywhere alone in that area--- in fact, neither should your friends.

Anu: (huffs) I never see you restricting Saahil like this. He is at liberty to do anything he wants. I am the only one you keep locked up in a cage with no rights.

Jai, hurt by her accusation, touches her cheek in a comforting manner.

Jai: That is not true Princess … I have never treated you two differently from each other… I am just more protective and concerned for you. You are a fragile girl Anu… I don't want you getting hurt.

Anu: I can be fine on my own if you would just let me prove it to you----

Jai: You don't need to prove anything to me… I trust you. However, you are still too young. Sixteen is nothing Anu. You still have a lot to learn about the world….

Anu: But… I don't understand how me going somewhere on my own is harmful.

Jai: Anu, I don't want to argue over this any longer. I am tired of talking about this matter over and over. You are too young and that's that. …. If you want to go you may but only if you take Saahil along with you.

Seeing tears dwelling in her soft brown eyes tears his heart and he takes her into his arms, lovingly stroking her hair as he does so.

Jai: I love you so much Anu…. I hope you know this?

Anu after a moment nods her head in agreement but continues to tear up. He hushes her soothingly by rubbing his hand up and down her back.

Jai: It is not that I don't hold faith in you or simply because you are a girl…. It is because you are so dear to me that I am afraid all of the time over your safety. I know I don't need to worry so much over Saahil because he is a tough and independent, someone who can handle whatever comes his way. And he has always been like that… You on the other hand are so gentle and innocent that I constantly have to fret over keeping you safe. …Perhaps you may never be able to understand my worries until you have someone to take care of yourself…

Still unable to understand her brother's reasoning, Anu selflessly pushes aside her desires and rights, not wanting to cause further distress to her brother who already works so hard to give her and her brother the life they have. If by listening to him and decreasing a little of his tension will help him feel better then she will do so happily. Anu hugs her brother back while wiping away her tears.

Anu: I am sorry Bhaiya… forgive me. I was acting selfish. I wasn't being considerate of your feelings. …. I understand.

Jai smiles in relief and satisfaction. He strokes her hair one last time before kissing her on the forehead. Hearing a honk from outside makes Anu realize that Saahl is waiting for her outside. He is usually her ride in the mornings. Giving her elder brother a feeble smile she pecks him on the cheek softly before wishing him a good day at work and promising that she will take Saahil with her to the movies.

After watching his sister leave, Jai resumes back in knotting his tie and throws his black coat over himself as he trots out of his room, ready to leave for work…..

******************************************************************

Bani walks serenely along the sidewalks through the neighborhoods, appreciating the view of beauty presiding around her. She politely refused a ride from Rano and her boyfriend, Ranveer Deb, who insisted that she join them. Instead she chose to walk home, something that she found she really enjoyed. It was a great excuse to glamor at the beautiful aspects of nature thriving around in this beautiful town that she is learning to love more and more by each passing day.

After completing her studies in her university and successfully majoring in art, Bani decided that she wanted to escape from the busy life of Mumbai and take a long break at somewhere peaceful and calm, where she would find inner peace and self satisfaction. She also wanted to find that inspiration that would give that noticeable spark in her artwork that she is looking for. At first her father was reluctant in allowing this desire of hers, but in the end he did not have the heart to refuse her any longer. In excitement she pondered over the various places she could go to but she found that only one place seemed to come to mind…. Mount Abu. She had visited there only once or twice before and that too for short periods of time, but it had left an impression on her. She remembered that the town was absolutely beautiful, easy-going, and peaceful. It had a homey feel to it, something that Bani felt she needed in her life… that presence of warmth.

Deciding that that was where she wanted to go, she immediately made plans to visit. Her father agreed easily to it only because his late wife's sister resided there and he knew she would take care of his angel like her own daughter. Bani packed her bags and left the bustling city of Mumbai, fleeing to the calm lifestyle in Mount Abu. Initially when she had come here she planned to stay for a couple of months, but she discovered by each passing day how quickly attached she was becoming to the place. After the first week of settling in she took notice of an art school nearby and applied for morning classes just for the fun of it. It would give her something meaningful to do in her spare time.

On arriving home she sees that her aunt is nowhere to be seen. She walks further in the house and stops by the mirror in the front hall which has a post-it right in the middle. She recognizes Kiran's handwriting right away….

A friend of mine is in the hospital. Going to check up on her and see how she's doing. Will be back in a couple of hours.

Bani takes the post with her as she walks on up the stairs to her room, placing her notepad and utensils onto her writing table. She decides that she will take a short nap before getting dressed again to go to lunch with Rano at her father's hotel that she recommends has a cute restaurant worth dining at….

****************************************************************

Jai finds himself wrapped in the normal hectic scheduling of the hotel that he has gotten used to as being manager for the last three years. It's certainly odd for him to be managing a hotel considering his age, but his father had been good friends with the owner of the hotel, Mr. Oberoi, who has a strong liking towards Jai. Of course he didn't favor him right away. Jai had to work intensively for the high promotion ever since joining the hotel at the young age of seventeen. At twenty-four Mr. Obreoi awarded him generously with the position, telling him that he is the most deserving of it with the hard work he puts into his job. He had told him proudly that he had never seen anyone so dedicated like him before. That had been the most accomplished day of Jai's life and he treated his small family out to a fancy dinner to celebrate.

As he leans back into his chair and tugs on his tie, loosening it from the tight hold around his neck, he inwardly groans as he hears his office door open. He had been hoping for at least one moment of peace. Perhaps that was too much to ask.

"Sir, there's a lady who demands to meet you. She has a complaint against the kitchen's food and wants to meet you directly regarding it," his employee informs him. Jai sighs, strongly detesting these snooty types of people who would find any opportunity to whine or complain. Bored, he replies in a tiring tone, "Send her on in Pushkar." Seconds later a figure comes gliding in, taking Jai's notice right away. Just when I thought my day couldn't get any worse….he moans.

He watches with irritation as Roshini Chopra makes her presence clear to him, wearing a fitting casual dress with small straps that end just over her knees, even though this is the season for layers, and matching high heels that usually give her the boost of confidence she always has.

"Yes Ms. Chopra… You have another complaint I presume," Jai tauntingly questions her, succeeding in making her feel slightly embarrassed of herself. This would only be your fourth one this week….he agitatedly adds on.

Roshini makes herself comfortable in one of the seats across from him and consciously displays her features to him. Jai, however, is clearly uninterested as well as unaffected.

Roshini: I am sorry Jai… It seems that is all I ever do these days, isn't it?

Of course because that is the only excuse you can use to come and irritate the hell out of me....he bitterly answers to himself.

Roshini Chopra, three years his junior, has been after him since he was sixteen. She never spared him a moment of peace as she always made sure to be by his side, making sure that he took notice to her. Anu, his sister, much to his "delight" informed him that at the age of fifteen she had created a fan group called United Jai Walia Lovers that still goes on and meets every Wednesday. When he had asked how she knew this, she replied with a grin, "A few of my friends happen to be in it." He had been utterly horrified. And as Roshini wasn't enough for him to put up with, Pia Chopra [her younger sister] and Meera Khandelwal [Pia Chopra's best friend] soon became an active annoyance in his life as well…..

Jai: Please, let's keep this strictly formal. (referring to her addressing him by his first name.)

Roshini: Oh, of course.

Jai: So tell me. What do you find dissatisfying with the restaurant's service? I was sure that last time we had settled the problem.

Roshini: Oh yes, it was. You solved it very efficiently and nicely. No wonder you have been made manager. Mr. Oberoi was right to appoint you the job. No one else would have been able to meet your qualities. (dreamily remarks)

Jai: Thank you for your compliments Ms. Chopra, but we are now getting off topic. Would you care to explain to me about your concerns?

Roshini: (blinks dumbly at first) … Oh yes. Well I had decided to come to the hotel's restaurant for lunch today. I ordered a dish and as I ate into it I found hair in my meal. Now Jai---I mean, Mr. Walia, I don't really think what your hotel needs is a bad name from your kitchen staff's inability to service your customers to the outmost perfection.

Jai: No, certainly it does not.

Roshini: Now I won't file a case or go to extreme measures here, I just wished to consult to you about this.

Jai: And I thank you for doing so. I guarantee you that I will check in on this.

Roshini smiles as a reply, pleased in being able to pull her small scheme off, yet again. Jai stands up from his seat and implies with a small gesture of his hand presenting the door for her to leave.

Jai: I hope our staff won't disappoint you any longer.

Roshini: That is why you are here… To make sure your customers and I are satisfied.

Jai: Of course…

He leads her to the door and like a gentleman opens the door for her. Just as she moves to leave, he remarks….

Jai: Might I suggest Ms. Chopra, that you visit other hotels and restaurants around as well. There are places than just the Star Hotel, you know.

Deeply embarrassed by his statement, Roshini blushes bright red just as Jai shuts his office door closed …..

*****************************************************************

Bani fumes silently as she continues to wait for Rano to join her at the restaurant for the last thirty minutes. She had already put off the waiter two times now, pleading for some more time. She tried calling numerous times but she won't pick up or take any of her calls.

*****************************************************************

Jai walks around the hotel, doing an inspection by checking on his staff on seeing whether they are performing their duties. He stands by the elevator doors patiently waiting for it to come up so he can go on back downstairs, but as they finally open he is struck heavily by a strange surprise…

********************************************************************

Giving up on any last hope of her friend showing up, Bani gets up from the restaurant, apologizing to her waiter for wasting his time on her way out and walks on over to the elevator. She steps in and watches as the doors close on her and takes her up to the main floor. Feeling her shoe pinching her foot painfully, she places a hand against the door of the elevator to temporarily adjust the problem. She removes her shoe, wiggles her toes around for awhile, and as she slips her foot back into it, the elevator comes to a stop and the doors open, her balancing support abandoning her….

She gasps when she trips forward and her eyes widen as she falls straight onto a man who had stood in front, outside of the elevator. She pushes both herself and him onto the floor, ending up on top of the stranger… She feels his hands go to her waist, steadying her and hears him groan from the forceful impact of their fall. Raising her head up, Bani meets a pair of familiar electrifying gray pair of eyes that makes her heart race instantly. She blushes hotly under his gaze….

Jai looks up after regaining himself and finds his eyes connected with a soft honey color of warm brown eyes staring at him with a mix of shock and humiliation. His breath is immediately taken away as he realizes who she is…

Bani manages to stutter, "I—I'm so sorry… Are you alright?" Jai continues to look at her, transfixed. It takes him awhile to register her words…

Bani: Are you okay, Jai? (soothingly, worried)

Jai snaps out of it and stares at her long and hard. He notes that her appearance is very different compared to the first time he had laid his eyes on her. Then she had worn a lovely white churidar that gave her a noticeable spark… Now she looks breathtakingly beautiful dressed in a simple pair of jeans, outlining her long slender legs, paired with a cute baby pink tee-shirt that fits her well. It's a great transformation from the traditional look to the modern….that too over a day.

Jai: (answering her automatically) Yes, I'm fine… Are you?

She nods in agreement and apologizes once again as they begin to stand up on their feet. Jai gives her a helping hand in which she accepts and he hoists her up… they feel a jolt by their contact and immediately let go afterwards, avoiding each other's gaze for a moment…

Jai: (rubbing the back of his neck) It's alright… You don't have to be sorry…

And as if it hit him like lightening, he suddenly remembered something and his gaze on her changes that into a sort of wonder…

Jai: How do you know my name?

Bani becomes frozen on the spot and her cheeks become into another shade of dark red. She's speechless and doesn't know how to answer him. She curses herself for letting his name slip from her mouth… What will he be thinking of her now? That she's some kind of stalker?

Bani: (stammers) I---I---I…

"Bani," they both hear someone scream across the other half of the restaurant. Bani turns around on being acknowledged and breathes a sigh of relief for this distraction. However she immediately frowns at the girl who waves her hands at her, standing near the entranceway. Forgetting Jai and caught up in her own anger, Bani storms off in the other direction. Jai stands behind, seeming highly amused as he sees her run up to her friend and angrily hit her.

As Bani grabs onto Rano's arm, dragging her out of the hotel in a rush, Jai watches until she disappears from sight. A soft smile twitches on his lips as he says under his breath, "Bani…."

Chater 3:

After reluctantly spending the rest of the afternoon with Rano, who she was still upset with for ditching her at the restaurant, Bani arrives back to her aunt's house drenched from head to toe in the pouring rain. Usually she would mind, but there was something about the rain this time that she found exciting and highly romantic… Which is why she chose to neglect the umbrella given to her by Rano and strolled along down the sidewalks, twirling around under the falling raindrops. Maybe it was the change in environment and the freshness of the town that was bringing this change about her…

However, another part of her didn't quite believe that. She couldn't help but constantly see Jai's handsome face appear before her… a face she has permanently etched into her mind… she can still feel his large, masculine hands holding onto her waist firmly… She shivers as she relives the memory.

As she opens the front door, she hears her aunt call out to her, "Bani, beta, where were you? I have been waiting for so long." Bani racks her fingers through her damp hair and answers apologetically, "Sorry mausi, I got caught up in spending time with Rano. You know how she is."

"I hope you had an umbrella… It's raining cats and dogs outside," she hears her aunt's voice become louder as she approaches her at the door. Kiran stops in her tracks as she takes in her niece's wet appearance. She grimaces at her and immediately fusses over her.

Kiran: Bani, what have you done to yourself? You have a perfectly well umbrella in your hand, and yet you are still wet. You will catch a cold dear. And our guests will be coming over any minute now. (exasperated) Quickly rush upstairs to your room and get yourself dried and dressed. You'll be hearing more from me later, young lady.

Bani: (ignoring her scolding) Guests?

Kiran grabs a blanket nearby and wraps it around her securely as she notices Bani begin to tremble with cold and her teeth shattering.

Kiran: Yes, guests. You remember I told you about Jai this morning? …(continuing on as she sees her nod) Well I invited him and his siblings over to dinner tonight. I thought I had told you…

Bani's cheeks become crimson and her voice dries on hearing her mausi's words. Jai Walia was coming here? And that too, in any minute? Without another moment of thought, she flees upstairs to her room in order to get ready and fix her appearance, leaving a startled Kiran behind….

**********************************************************

Even before Jai could bring his hand forward and knock against the wooden door, he sees it fly open and his Kiran Aunty smiling delightfully at him and his siblings. She screams in excitement and quickly gathers Saahil and Anu into her arms and gushes over how much they have grown since she has last seen them. Jai finds this very humorous as she had just seen them a week ago when she paid a small visit at their house. He expresses this to her…

Jai: It's remarkable how much kids can grow within a week, isn't it?

He grabs her attention as she smiles even wider at him and pulls her into one of her old motherly embraces that makes him a little nostalgic. She kisses him affectionately like if he were her long lost son.

Kiran: I feel like I haven't seen my children in ages… that is why. You all keep growing so fast, it's hard to keep up…. Come in… It's cold and raining out… Make yourself comfortable. Remember, this is just as much as your home as it is mine.

Jai smiles at this and kisses her sweetly on her cheek. Saahil and Anu rush inside toward the warmth, seeking refuge to the living room, as Jai lingers back with his favorite Aunty answering her worried inquiries about him.

Kiran: How is work nowadays? I know how much effort you put in as manager…. It is ridiculous how busy your schedule always is.

Jai: Work's fine Aunty… You don't worry about me.

Kiran: How can I not? You are like a son to me… Of course I will worry… Especially since you have no one to take care of you. See how thin you are becoming?—You are barely eating! And your face looks weary from the lack of sleep you get----Jai Walia, you need to slow down. You are not a superhero. You are a normal being. It's not right for you to overexert yourself like this.

Jai: (taking her hand, giving it a comforting squeeze) Trust me Aunty… I'm fine.

Kiran: (grumbles) You will be on your death bed and even then you will tell me you are fine.

Jai chuckles and she scowls at him, "Go to the living room and sit down. I'll bring you snacks to eat. I am going to make sure you look healthy and fit again." He watches her scuttle off to the kitchen and he wanders toward the living area where his siblings are already cozy on the couch and watching television. They fight over the remote and he gives them a single look that hushes them quickly, knowing that he wants them to behave.

"What do you want babies? Tell me now and Kiran aunty will whip it up for you," they hear Kiran affectionately coo to them from the other room. Saahil doesn't hesitate at all in giving her a long list of what he wants. Anu nudges him hard in his ribcage, telling him to not be rude and that Kiran Aunty isn't his personal cook. Jai, deciding that he'd rather help out Kiran then loiter around with nothing to do, gets up from his seat and joins her in the kitchen.

Kiran: Arre Jai beta, you relax and sit down. I have invited you over to dinner as my guests. (knowing very well what his intentions are)

Jai: Aunty, you tell us that we are like your children and in a moment you already turn us into strangers by referring to us as guests. Take your pick, what are we to you?

Turning her attention away from the stove, Kiran stares at the young man before her, who she has watched grow over the years and kept close to her heart, with admiration and motherly love. She tenderly touches his cheek and concedes defeat, " Accha baba… no need to pick a fight with me. You are all my children…. Now come and help me decide what to make. It's been so long since I have made dinner for you all. I don't think I'm still kept up to date of what you all like." ……

*********************************************************

Bani stares at herself through her dresser mirror and plays with her appearance for awhile. She had raided her closet completely, trying to figure out what to wear that would seem appropriate for dinner. She now debates what to do with her hair and whether she should apply any make up or not. She doesn't want to try too hard… nor does she want to look too plain. Seeing that she can't really do anything with her damp hair, she keeps it in its wet state, her hair in subtle curls….

After a lot of musing, she decides on a natural look and only applies a light shade of pink gloss onto her lips. Giving herself one last long look in the mirror, Bani nervously with her stomach in knots walks out of her room and descends down the wooden stairs…

She pokes her head through the entranceway of the living room and is somewhat relieved yet disappointed on not finding the object of her thoughts there… but instead sees a boy and a girl in their teens, watching TV with some level of interest. She concludes that these are his siblings and hesitantly makes her mind to introduce herself.

"Hello there…," she says in order to get their attention. She mentally slaps herself for speaking to them as if they are toddlers. They are only a few years younger than her. Their heads snap in her direction and she looks at them cautiously as they stare at her suspiciously.

"Hi, I am Anu," Anu smiles friendly after a short moment. Bani breaks out into a small smile herself, already knowing that she will like this girl. On the other hand, she finds the teenager boy a little tough to handle…

Saahil: Who are you?

She flushes uncomfortably as she is well aware of him giving her a thorough look and displaying distinct approval on his face. For God's sake, I am older than you--- she wanted to tell him, but instead answers his question after Anu punches him hard, obviously very angry with his curt behavior.

Bani: (smiling kindly) I'm Bani Dixit… I'm staying here for awhile with my Kiran Mausi.

Saahil: Kiran Aunty is your Mausi?

Bani: Yes.

Saahil:(curious)….. How long is awhile?

Anu: (shocked) Saahil!...

Saahil: What? I just want to know Anu… (defensive)

Anu: I'm so sorry. I'd love to tell you that he's not always like this, but sadly he is.

Bani laughs a little at this, liking her honesty and politeness directed toward her.

Bani: It's alright, I don't mind. ---For about a couple of months… (she answers his question)

Saahil: Where are you from?

Bani: I was born and raised in Mumbai… I still live there even now.

Saahil: How come you're visiting for so long?

Anu: Saahil, that's none of your business…. Just you watch till I tell Bhaiya about this. (warns him angrily)

Hearing her mention Jai sends further flutters to Bani's stomach, making her jittery and terribly confused by her current state.

Bani: (feigning innocence) Your brother?

Anu: Yes, we have an older brother…. He's here right now too, but he's in the kitchen with Aunty helping her out.

Bani: How come he is not out here? (continues to innocently ask)

Saahil: (cutting in) Sure, because the old man would love to hang out with us…

Bani: (puzzled) Old man?

Anu: (sighs, irritated by Saahil) He often calls Bhaiya that… He's much older than us, you see... About a good ten years older than us…. Also, he's the only person we have…since our Mummy and Papa passed away.

Saahil: Don't you think you're giving out a little too much information, Princess…. (stresses Princess, mocking her)

Anu: Well she's Kiran Aunty's niece… and Kiran Aunty's family so I don't see what's the harm in telling her…

Bani dwells on how she states that her mausi is a part of their family. She didn't think that her mausi was so attached to Jai and his siblings. She had only thought they were close, old neighbors. She is surprised on seeing Anu direct her attention back over to her and smile adorably at her… her eyes twinkling with a sudden spark.

Anu: Would you mind if I called you Didi?

Overcome with a strange emotion on hearing this, Bani breaks out into a beautiful smile and nods her head excitedly….

Bani: I would love that Anu…

Saahil crosses his arms and sits back against the couch, grumbling "Don't expect me to call you Didi." Anu holds in a giggle, knowing very well why her brother chooses to refuse. Bani gives her a small look, telling her that she knows as well. Anu pats down on the empty seat beside her and politely requests for her to sit down beside her. Already liking this girl dearly, Bani agrees without any reluctance and immerses herself into conversation with her.

*********************************************************

Dinner time finally rolled around and Bani and Anu had caught up on their likes, dislikes, and personality, finding that they are quite alike. Anu was ecstatic on finding another person who loved art just as much as her. Saahil merely ignored them most of the time, but did answer Bani with a subtle eagerness whenever she tried to make some talk with him. Kiran and Jai made their presence known as they set up the table and placed the dishes in the center. Just as Jai brought the last dish out in his hands and walked back into the dining room, he halts in his steps as his eyes land on Bani's figure just walking into the room herself with Anu clinging to her side. He's beyond shocked and confused on seeing her here… Shocked on having to see her again so soon and confused on what she is doing here of all places…. Their eyes meet for a moment and he sees her cheeks turn pink, perhaps on recognition and remembering the incident between them before.

Kiran: Arre Jai beta, what's the hold up? Place it down right here and take a seat. We're already past regular dinner time.

Jai listens and sets the dish down near the others and silently takes his seat next to Saahil and coincidentally sitting across Bani, who shyly avoids looking at him. He keeps his eyes on her in a flood of wonder…

Just as Kiran sits down herself, the last one to do so, she catches Jai staring questioningly at her niece. She realizes that Saahil and Anu have already met her, but he is still yet in need of an introduction…

Kiran: Jai beta…

He switches his focus on Kiran, seeing her look apologetically at him.

Kiran: I forgot to do introductions… This is Bani, my niece… She is my late sister's only daughter. She is visiting from Mumbai and will be staying for about three months.

Jai nods his head, appreciating her telling him, and exchanges a soft "hello" with Bani, who at last looks at him again. She answers him back with a shy, "hello" in return.

Kiran: And Bani, I have already told you about Jai… I'm glad that you're finally able to meet him.

His mind triggers and he realizes how Bani came to know his name. But still--- how could she know it was him? Perhaps she had seen him come by the house earlier on in the day, he justifies for himself.

Anu: (exclaims) Bhaiya, Bani Didi is simply amazing! She's so sweet and kind! I already love her so much! She's into all of the stuff that I like and even enjoys art, but she's planning to do it as a profession since she majored in it. Isn't that great?

Jai: (digging into his food) Sure it is… Perhaps she can even show you some of her work…

His eyes wander back on over to Bani, noting how she gets pinker by the second every time he either looks at her or simply just by his presence. He brushes it off just as after embarrassment from what happened in the hotel. But he had to admit, it was quite funny in an ironic way that the girl who brought such a strong reaction from him at the festival, who had been haunting his dreams last night for unknown reasons, and who he knocked into today has turned out to be Kiran Aunty's niece…. It's as if fate is trying to play games with him or at least tell him something. He is sure that he would now being seeing her quite often from now on.

Anu: (squealing) Really?---- Oh Didi, would you mind if you did show me?

Bani: (still blushing from Jai's casual suggestion) Of course not… I will right after dinner.

They all begin eating their food and engaging each other in discussion with the exception of Jai and Bani who only looked at one another with silent eyes whenever the other wasn't looking. Kiran, in the middle of their meal, slowly begins to realize the strong silence between her niece and Jai… but one that speaks volumes. She notes how they stare at each other when one isn't looking, and at times briefly make eye contact. She holds in a growing smile and tries to pretend that she isn't seeing what she is, but secretly can't help but ponder whether she is seeing the beginning of something right before her…

*********************************************************

Shortly after dinner, Bani sweetly obliged to Anu's request in seeing her paintings and drawings and told her to stay put downstairs while she will bring it to her from her room. In the meantime while she rummages through her things to find her stuff, Jai receives a phone call from his cell. He picks it up only to be left slightly agitated as a response. Just as he cuts off the call and places his phone back into his pocket, Kiran curiously questions him…

Kiran: Kya hua Jai?

Jai: (looking apologetic) Sorry Kiran Aunty, but I need to get back to the hotel. Something's come up and they need me over there. …. Do you mind if I leave Saahil and Anu here for a little while? I'll come back as soon as I'm done to pick them up.

Kiran: (obviously upset about his departure) Teek hai beta… Tum jao… Saahil and Anu will be perfectly fine here. Don't take too long though. That hotel doesn't need you all the time in order to run, you know… I hate how they are always keeping you busy like this.

Jai: (grinning lightly) It pays for the bills so I have no complaints.

Kiran reluctantly smiles back at him, not able to ever stay mad at him for too long. She chuckles softly at his comment and fondly ruffles his hair.

Kiran: You drive safe and come back soon.

Jai: Ji…

He gives her a farewell hug before she rushes back on over to the living area where she hears the two antagonists bickering at one another. Jai grabs his coat from the coat rack and as he pulls it around himself, he hears someone running down the long fleet of stairs by him. Looking to the side he watches Bani carrying a couple of notepads in her hands and keeping her nose buried into them, flipping through the pages. He's about to turn and leave without really saying bye, but stops himself as he sees her trip over a step past halfway the stairs and as an impulse breaks her fall by catching her into his arms. Bani takes in a large amount of air into her after losing her breath from the unexpected plunge. She steadies herself by keeping her hands onto Jai's shoulders after dropping her things, causing them to make a "flop" sound against the hardwood floor. Her eyes fly up to see her savior and she becomes stunned on seeing Jai stare back at her with clear amusement and a little hint of annoyance with her. Well who could blame him really? By now she is sure she has earned herself a reputation of being a klutz.

She then realizes their close proximity and his grip on her waist, holding her in place. Burning red, she finds herself paralyzed as her eyes bore into his…

Jai breaks the strong, reeling moment as he remarks, "Do you always have a tendency of falling?" Taken aback by his comment, she blushes further and shakes her head in an opposing manner.

Bani: (softly) Nahi to…

Jai: (raises a brow) Are you sure? …. Because it seems like it. (giving her a knowing look)

Bani feels herself melting in embarrassment and she quickly averts her eyes from his hold. She begins to feel incredibly stupid by acting like such a fool when around him.

Bani: I'm sorry… You must thing I'm some kind of klutz… Please forgive me for knocking into you. --- I wasn't looking and I---

Jai's lips crack into a laughing smile as he finds her incredibly cute at the moment, blabbing apologies all day and looking like a guilty little child who has done something terrible.

Jai: …. There's no need for you to give me apologies. You've already given me a share of them earlier if you don't quite remember.

Bani stares at him hot faced as he removes his hands from her waist and grins handsomely at her.

Jai: And if you really want to know what I think…..--- I think you are just a girl with weak ankles… No klutz… (grins)

Burning red and looking at him with wide, dove like eyes, she watches him turn around to leave, walking to the door. He pulls it open and before stepping out, he casts her one last look and says, "Hope to knock into you again soon…" …….

*********************************************************

After showing Anu her art pieces mindlessly, her thoughts still focused on Jai, she seeks refuge in her bedroom where she sits by the window hugging her legs to her chest and looking out from it. She watches Anu and Saahil receive a last peck on the cheek from Kiran and then run off towards the awaiting car on the driveway, where she can clearly see Jai sitting behind the wheel with the engine running. She lowers her head onto her folded arms that rest on top of her knees and gazes at him dreamily without a care in the world. The more she finds herself looking at him, the more she questions herself. After all, what's happening to her? Why does she feel so out of place and aware of herself in an instant around Jai? …. Could it possibly be that she----- No, she pushes the thought away. She can't be. But could she? She hardly knows him, though!

Rattling away all of her clashing thoughts, Bani decides to retire to bed instead of driving herself half insane trying to figure what's going on with her…..

Chapter 4:

Three slow weeks pass by with Jai and Bani carrying on with their lives by resuming to their daily routine, busying themselves as much as they can. Much too both of their secret disappointment, they did not meet much again after dinner at Kiran's. However, they never failed to think about one other, much to their own surprise and chagrin. While Jai drove himself insane of questioning himself why he happens to ponder about her and whether what he feels is simply plain old attraction, Bani grows anxious and uneasy with her developing feels toward a man she barely knows….

**************************************************************

Rano catches her friend humming softly to herself, looking in a rather happier state than usual, and mindlessly drawing whatever comes to her mind on the blank sheet before her, clearly not hearing the instructions given to her. She nudges her hard, trying to grab her attention.

Bani: Ouch. What is with you Rano?

Rano: Me? I should be asking you that question instead. What is wrong with you?

Bani: Why? What am I doing?

Rano: You are humming! (whispers)

Bani: So? ---- I did not know that humming was a crime here.

Rano: (rolls her eyes) No, that's not what I meant. I mean you are humming, which isn't normal for you. Especially when you are in a large classroom with other people around you. Did you care to notice that?

Realization striking upon her, Bani switches her gaze around and finds a few people nearby casting her strange looks. She flushes and looks back at Rano.

Rano: You are not even paying attention either. It's like you are in a different world and I can't even reach you. And you are not following instructions.--- We're supposed to draw something abstract with a hidden, inner meaning. Not a silly pair of eyes.

Bani feels hurt and offended by her taunt, more than she normally would. That is because the eyes that she had chosen to draw weren't any ordinary pair of eyes…. A cool, steel color of gray tinted with a certain gleam in them.

Bani: (defensive) This has meaning…

Rano: (raising a brow) Really? The only thing I see is that those eyes are staring right at you…

Bani: You are ignorant, which is why you can't see anything more than that….

Rano: (sighs) Would you care to tell me what's up with you lately? Ever since this morning you have been acting strange. You're humming…daydreaming…in a world of your own…smiling like a fool…. It's like you're in love or something….

Seeing her friend's face turn a dark shade of red from her playful suggestion causes Rano to gasp out loud, drawing mostly everyone's attention in the room.

Rano: You are! You are, aren't you?

Bani: Ssshhhhh!!!!

Bani looks around, paranoid, and smiles feebly at everyone around her. They shake their heads at them and resume back to their pictures. She breathes out a sigh of relief and glares at Rano.

Bani: Can you be any louder?

Rano: Oh Bani, tell me, who is he? How did you meet him? How did this happen? (clearly excited, in a happier mood now)

Bani: Rano…(embarrassed, continuing to turn red) I don't even know if I am in love of it's a silly little crush... But it happened… and so fast… I mean…I've only known about him for a little while…. Is it possible for a person to have such feelings in such a small amount of time?

Rano: Of course it is! It's normally called love at first sight and maybe that's what you experienced except it took you a little longer to realize it. Tons of people fall in love quickly all the time. It's not unusual.

Bani: But it's so strange….I mean, how can a person all of a sudden mean so much in such a short period of time?

Rano: That's the beauty of love Bani… You don't question it, you just go with it. You can't help feel what you feel. It's simply uncontrollable--- it's out of your hands. But all that matters is that you feel amazing and happier than anything before. It's a wonderful sensation.

Bani: Rano, I never said that I was in love.

Rano: Oh pish, posh, you clearly are! Now tell me, who is he?

Bani: (shy, slowly) …. He is the same guy I was telling you about at the Fair.

Rano: (enthusiastic) Arre, tell me the lucky guy's name…

Bani: (whispers, blushing) His name is Jai Walia…

Rano stills as she hears the name coming from her lips. It takes her a few blanked out moments to respond.

Rano: (shocked) Jai Walia?-----Jai Walia as in the tall, dark, and the most handsomest man in town? The one who works at the Star Hotel? He has two siblings, Saahil and Rano?

Bani: (nodding her head in confirmation, curious) Yes, but how do you know all this?

Rano: Oh Bani, I can't believe this… You are in love with Jai bhaiya? This is so surreal… I mean, it's because I've known him for so long. And I know you so well too.

Bani: (confused) Jai is your bhaiya?

Rano: (shakes her head) Well not really… He is not blood related to me at all… But he is one of my dad's good friend's son. And our families used to be very close when his parents were still alive. I grew up and spent a lot of my childhood with him. That was until things changed when he moved for some time and then I went off to Mumbai.

Bani: You still speak to him?

Rano: Of course, whenever I get the time to see him. He's so busy that it's hard to ever reach him---but he's been like that for years now. Even after moving to Mumbai for a bit and coming back we still kept our old family-friend relationship intact. He's also working under Papa---- I'm always complaining to Papa to calm the stress level work he gives him, but it seems Jai bhaiya takes it gladly with no complaints.

Bani: Why is that?

Rano: (shrugs) That is just the way he is….Bhaiya's really something Bani. Guys like him are very hard to find these days. …….When I think about it now, you two would make a very cute couple. He's determined and headstrong while you're calm and gentle. It's a great match indeed. Hopefully with your influence in his life, he can learn to relax.

Bani: (blushes) Now I wouldn't go that far.

Rano: Why not? You say that you love him right? (corrects herself on seeing the cross look Bani gives her) Accha baba, you at least like him, haina?

Bani: (admitting shyly)…I guess… I mean, there's never a moment when I'm not thinking about him….when I don't want to see him ----But I can't allow my hopes to rise like this. Not when I don't even know if he feels the same way about me. I mean, we've only had a short exchange of words here and there and a couple of bumps into each other because of my clumsiness. He drops by Mausi's house a few times. But that's it…. How can he possibly feel what I feel for him?

Rano: Well if he doesn't yet, he will soon… You're a beautiful girl Bani. How can he not fall in love with you?

Bani: Rano, let's not get ahead of ourselves here. I mean, it's too much that we're hoping for… Too much that I'm hoping for.

Rano: Hmph. Then you clearly don't have enough guts to go after what you want…. What are you going to do Bani? Draw his eyes for the rest of your life instead?

Bani: How did you----

Rano: It went right home after you told me about him. Besides, I can recognize those eyes anywhere. He's one of the few with eyes other than the color brown in this town.

Bani shakes her head in exasperation from her suggestion and her mixed feelings.

Bani: I just don't know what to do Rano… Maybe we should let it be and run its course. Who knows, maybe it's nothing and I am only mistaken?

Rano: (snorts, scoffs) I highly doubt that missy! I mean, judging by the exact detail and depth you have put into your drawing--- it's clearly obvious how much in love you are.

The instructor interrupts in the middle of their silence by announcing the end of class and remarking that he has seen some fantastic pieces of work on his walk around the room. Bani packs her utensils and her picture while Rano suggests that they eat out for lunch, saying that it was required now after what she has discovered…..

****************************************************************

Kiran: Oh Jai, you are such an angel!

Jai grins boyishly at her as she raids through the grocery bags held up in his arms. She takes a few from him, helping him out.

Kiran: Really, you need to stop doing so many favors for me. You are spoiling me. Very soon I won't even be seen around town at all if you keep taking over my errands!

Jai: That is my actual intention Aunty… No offense but everyone would rather have you stay put at home. They're getting tired of spotting you around in public all the time.

Jai chuckles as he ducks behind his bags while Kiran lightly slaps him a few times on his arm.

Kiran: You are horrible Jai Walia. (whines)

Jai: (still laughing) Arre Aunty, you take me too seriously. Main to mazak khar raha tha… Saach to yeh hai ke saab apko miss kaarte hai… Har waqt sochte hai ke kaash woh kabsoorat Ms. Sharma kabhi nazar mein aati… (trans: I was just joking… The truth is that everyone misses you. All the time they wonder how they wish that beautiful Ms. Sharma would come into sight.)

Kiran now flushes darkly while Jai continues to laugh at her expense. She points to the kitchen while glaring at him, not liking him anymore at the moment with his teasing. Jai pokes his tongue in his cheek and follows her instruction. He holds in his chuckle and walks further into the house, on his way over to the kitchen. Just as he starts to approach it, he passes by the living room and momentarily glances into it….then his eyes wander everywhere else, seeming as if he were looking for someone. Kiran catches this.

Kiran: Kya hua? Why are you looking around like you've never seen this house before?

Jai: (startled) Huh? Oh, no, nothing. I was just wondering---- aap akele ghar peh hai? Where is your niece? (trans: You are home alone?)

Kiran: Hain. I am alone for now. Bani has an art class in the mornings.

Jai, for some odd reason, is disappointed on hearing this. He had been hoping that…..

Kiran: Kyon? Are you missing her?

Jai: (embarrassed, stammers) W-what? No… Of course not. I barely even know her. I was just simply wondering…. She is usually here most of the time.

Kiran: Hmm-hmmmm. (teasingly, nodding her head in mock agreement)

Jai: Kya?

Kiran: (innocently) Kya?

Jai: What was that "Hmm-hmm" for? You don't believe me?

Kiran: Arre, of course I believe you… I just don't believe you are telling me the whole truth.

Jai: (retorts) Aunty, she is your niece for heaven's sake… I would never-----

Kiran: Never what? (cutting him off)

Jai: Never…(stalling, uncomfortable with the topic)

Kiran: Kaho na… what would you never do regarding my niece? (raises a brow)

Kiran wants to burst into laughter so bad on seeing Jai's face expression. He is absolutely tongue-tied and unsure of what to do about it. After a stunned moment he reacts…

Jai: Aunty…please.

Kiran: What am I doing? I am doing nothing. I just think it's so cute of you to want to see her.

To her amazement, Jai actually blushes by this and he rubs the back of his neck, awkwardly.

Jai: You are taking things completely out of hand. I never said I wanted to see her nor was I looking for her. I merely asked if you were here alone. I didn't think your niece would have plans already so soon after recently coming to town.

Kiran: You know Jai… It wouldn't hurt to say her name. (a gleam in her eyes, grinning)

Again he looks painfully embarrassed. Knowing that she is going overboard and pushing it, Kiran decides to step back and cool it. Hence, she lets go of her desire to tease him mercilessly---even though she has been waiting to do this ever since the dinner three weeks ago.

Kiran: Accha baba, I am sorry. I promise, I won't make fun of you anymore. Now cheer up and help me load these things into the refrigerator….

*****************************************************************

Rano: Now… what do you want to know?

Bani: (breathes) ….Anything that you are able to tell me. What kind of person he is… What life he has here…

Rano smiles to Bani across the restaurant table, feeling proud of her friend for loving such an honorable man like Jai Walia. She takes her friend's hand in hers and expresses this thought…

Rano: Really Bani… I have never seen such an honest and true person like him before in my life. ... He's a very good person who was raised with values and principles instilled in him. He's polite and respectful to almost everyone or anyone. He's very helpful and dedicates most of his time to others. He's like our town's superman. ---- Bhaiya was born and raised here in Mount Abu. He's lived his whole life in this town. When he was sixteen, his parents died from a fatal car accident leaving him an orphan.

Bani slowly nods her head in acknowledgment, remembering that Anu had brought up their parent's death at the Dinner.

Rano: He and his siblings were given custody to his Mausi until she too died three years later from cancer. Bhaiya by then had already joined Papa's hotel and was in the middle of his studies. He pronounced himself to be Saahil and Anu's guardian and to financially support them. It was a really courageous thing of him to do when he already had so much on his plate, stress from Billo Mausi's death, school, and work. He's been taking care of his brother and sister ever since then and has made them his number one priority. Nothing matters to him more than his small little family.

Bani looks attentively at Rano, taking in everything that she says….wanting to know as much as she can about Jai, a stranger who managed to have such a big impact on her at one glance. She watches as Rano suddenly becomes uncertain and serious at the same time.

Rano: Now Bani… Jai… he's not from the same background as you… He lives a very average middle-class life and works hard to provide for himself and his siblings---he's not anything that you are used to back in Mumbai.

Bani: (offended) Rano, I would had thought you would know me better than that. I would never judge him or anyone for the matter just by their class. I am not interested in his money. Besides, you know very well how I feel about my life back in Mumbai. I feel detached from it, like I don't belong there…

Rano: Bani, forgive me, I'm sorry for offending you. I just wanted to make sure you understood his living circumstances before jumping into things. I mean, you are from such a wealthy background… whereas Jai Bhaiya has had to struggle to get everything he has today. ---And I do know how you feel about Mumbai… You were never really cut out for the lifestyle. One can never take you as a rich brat.

Rano caresses Bani's hand comfortingly while speaking soothingly to her. Bani feels better on hearing her reasoning for her doubts and smiles reassuringly at her.

Bani: Rano, don't you worry. I know what I have gotten myself into....

*****************************************************************

Jai stands straight after placing the last gallon of milk into the refrigerator and announces, "I think it's time for me to leave." Kiran looks at him startled.

Kiran: You have just come beta. Stay for a little bit. ----Please don't tell me you have to work. I thought it was your day off today.

Jai: It is. I just promised Anu that I'd take her to the art museum downtown. She's been begging me to take her for awhile now. And since I have time today, I thought I'd finally will.

Kiran: Oh? How coincidental…

Jai: What is?

Kiran: Bani had told me earlier this morning that she wanted to go there as well today.

His heart for some unfathomable reason races on hearing this…..

Kiran: She said she would go there right after she comes home… She should be coming back here right about now… Why don't you take her along Jai?

Jai strangely becomes uncomfortably nervous on hearing this and begins to dread the suggestion. Take her along with him? Just the two of them?----That too on his motorbike? He didn't think that was such a good idea… especially for him.

Kiran: Yes, that's a good idea. Take her with you. That way she won't have to walk, like how she insists she wants to everywhere, or wait on Rano to give her a ride. You two are going to the same place, it'd be wise to just go together.

Jai: … I…. I don't know Aunty. (sounding unsure)

Kiran: (puzzled) Why, what's wrong in that?

Jai: Well you had said she should be here over thirty minutes ago, and she's still not here. I don't think I can afford to wait for too long. Anu's getting really impatient waiting at home.

Kiran: (muses out loud) She normally doesn't take this long to come home… .. (sighs) Teek hai beta… You may go. I don't want Anu to wait for too long.

Jai: (relieved) Ji… I'll see you later Aunty.

He pecks her on the cheek before walking out from the kitchen and over to the front door. As he takes his coat from the rack and pulls it on him, the large wooden door swings open revealing a gorgeous Bani wearing blue jeans, a simple white shirt with a black coat over it, a light brown abstract scarf wrapped loosely around her neck, and her beautiful silky hair placed in a high ponytail… Her cheeks are a lovely pink from the chilly cold outside and she carries a notepad and utensils in her small hands held lightly against her chest. Her fair porcelain face stares up at him in surprising shock from her 5'7" height compared to his 6'2" intimidating frame that hovers over her. Her wide alluring eyes penetrate into his own and neither of them speak… their breathing in sync… That is until Kiran comes walking out in the front hall after hearing the bolting door open and brings the both of them back to reality…

Kiran: Oh Bani, good you are home. I was starting to worry.

Jai watches as Bani unwillingly switches her attention towards Kiran, her eyes flying right past his left shoulder. She smiles apologetically and looks at her sincerely…

Bani: I'm sorry mausi… I got caught up in lunch with Rano… I didn't mean to make you worry.

Kiran: It's alright now. You're home, that's all that matters. Now… I remember you telling me that you want to visit the art museum that's downtown?

Bani nods her head, and from the corner of her eye sees Jai casually look the other way as Kiran mentions this.

Bani: I was going to walk for a little bit and then catch a rickshaw for the rest of the trip there.

Kiran: (quickly intervening) A rickshaw? Heavens no, your father would personally kill me if he learns that you even touched one.

Jai raises a brow at this from intrigued interest and Bani catches this. She blushes of wondering what he thinks about her now.

Bani: He won't have to know… You don't need to tell him.

Kiran: (short laugh) I'd be insane if I were to tell him… But your father has his ways on finding out things. You may never know, there may be some of his henchmen around here to keep an eye on you.

Bani: He would never do that mausi, he trusts you.

Kiran: Hmph… trust my foot. If only you knew….

Bani opens her mouth to cut in and ask her what she means by that, but stops herself as she realizes too much is being said in front of Jai who continues to stand like an intruding stranger in their conversation. Instead she concedes defeat…

Bani: Okay, I'll somehow arrange a ride with Rano instead.

Kiran: Oh that girl is always late for everything and you know that too Bani… I don't want you to wait for her the whole day. What I was going to suggest was that you should go with Jai instead. He is going there just now after picking Anu up from his house. And I know how much you and Anu are already getting so close----if I'm not mistaken about all the phone calls you two give each other.

Bani flushes further as Jai looks even more intrigued on hearing this. She avoids looking at him.

Kiran: By this excuse you will get to meet and spend time with her. And if you three are going to the same place, might as well go together. Haina Jai?

Jai clears his throat after finally being acknowledged and hesitantly nods his head in agreement after a short moment.

Jai: Yes Aunty… That does make sense.

What else could he say? No, I don't want your niece coming with me because I'm afraid that I'm very attracted to her? Oh yeah, that would really help him.

Bani slowly switches her eyes back onto him to find his eyes staring back at her as well. She can feel her heart pounding hard and her stomach twist in knots from both excitement and fear. A part of her didn't trust herself to be alone with him, but the other part---the majority---wants to be with him no matter what. Her heart flips at the quiet, long look he gives her…

Bani: (softly) Would you mind taking me along with you?

On hearing her soft angelic voice ask him so innocently to take her along, Jai couldn't find it in himself to refuse to her… In fact he would have even been willing to agree if she were to tell him to eat glass out of her hand right at that moment.

Jai: (softly back) No, … I'd be glad to.

Her eyes shine brightly at him and he stares into them, completely mesmerized.

Bani: I will be right back down… I need to change.

And with that she leaves him waiting for her restlessly by the stairs and glides to her room happily, feeling like she's floating on cloud nine. Kiran chuckles inwardly on seeing Jai's bewildered expression after realizing what he had agreed to. ………

***************************************************************

Jai lingers near his bike, resting his back against it as he waits on Bani to come out and join him. He wonders why he is unlike his collected self when it comes to Bani. He's been around many beautiful women before, had his small share of flings (nothing serious), a couple of temptations…. But what is so special about this one? What is it that makes her different from the others? That distinguishes her and makes her so much more fascinating? He shakes his head, clearing away all thoughts on the topic. He can't afford to get himself involved with her…nor can he have a relationship with anyone for the matter. He has his family to think about it. His kids that he needs to raise and make sure of a good future for them. He won't let his selfish motives come in the way of his responsibilities…

His ears become alarmed as he hears footsteps approaching him in a slow pace. He raises his head and locates Bani coming toward him, looking nervously at him and terribly shy, with a hand gripping onto one of her arms. Jai pushes away his discomfort, thinking the last thing he wants to do is make things uncomfortably awkward between them and decides that it would not hurt him to make a friend. Smiling politely at her, Jai motions to her to come near as she hesitantly stands a few feet away from him. He takes his only helmet and extends it over to her.

Jai: You're going to need this.

Bani looks at him for a moment before taking it from him and hugging it against her stomach.

Bani: What about you?

Jai: I'll be fine without it. But I want you to be safe.

Bani gets a tingling warm feeling go through her on hearing his last words. She nods thankfully at him, not able to thank him in words as she is terribly tongue-tied when around him.

Jai: Good. Now I guess we need to get going. Hop on onto the back and we'll get going.

Bani pulls the helmet over her head and feels strange with it on, which Jai notices.

Jai: (friendly grin) Ever worn a helmet before?

Bani: No… I've never been on a motorcycle either. This is all new to me. (admitting shyly)

Jai: Will your father's henchmen hunt me down if they were to see you with me?

She finds herself blushing all over.

Bani: My mausi is an exaggerator. My father would do no such thing. You don't need to worry about getting yourself into any trouble.

Jai: I hope so…. Here, let me help you adjust that.

Bani holds onto her breath as he comes near and fixes the position of the helmet on her head. He smiles handsomely at her as he closes the glass shield of it and she smiles lightly back…

Jai: Alright, you're all set. Hop on.

Jai throws his leg over and seats himself at the front of the bike while Bani muses on how she should sit in the back. She fears of whether she will fall off during the ride. She decides on sitting at a certain angle with her legs on the same side and grips onto her seat to balance her. Jai starts the engine and looks back to check up on her. He sees worry and slight fear etched on her face.

Jai: It'd be better if you held onto me during the ride than the seat. It can get a little rough on the roads.

Nervously after a long hesitant moment, Bani brings her arms around the lower part of his torso and lightly holds on.

Bani: Is this good?

Jai tries to ignore the strong emotion stirring inside of him from her close touch but without much success. He doesn't bother to correct her because he knows once he begins driving her hold on him will become tighter.

Jai: Yes, now stay close.

He turns the gears of his bike, making the engine growl louder, and kicks off with a startling start that knocks the breath out of Bani. Proving himself right, she clings onto him tight and leans her body against his back. He drives them to his house in content ease with her arms around him…..

****************************************************************

As they pull up on the driveway, Bani gazes wide at the house before her with her mouth slightly open in awe. It's a beautiful, homey looking white house with small black shutters and a front porch with a bench swing to the side. Rose bushes adorn the sides of the home and she can see a pleasant view of a small garden in the back …. For some reason she felt her spirits rise and her heart soar at the sight …. a strange connection to the house was building inside of her. She had envisioned a home quite similar to this one…. A cute small house with a front porch and driveway, garden in the backyard, a tree out in the front lawn…. It fit perfectly to her ideal description of a home. Her real home back in Mumbai was large in comparison, yet empty and lonely.

"Bani Didi!," Anu squeals in loud delight as she sights Bani coming off of her Bhaiya's motorcycle and walk up the driveway to their house. Bani smiles widely at Anu as she rushes toward her and takes her into a big hug.

Anu: Aap yahan kya khar rahi ho? (trans: What are you doing here?)

Bani: Kyon? Kya main yahan nahi aasakti? (trans: Why? Am I not allowed here?)

Anu: Of course Di, you can come here anytime you want. I am just surprised and very happy that you are here!

Bani: Kiran Mausi told me that you wanted to go see the art museum that's downtown and I had originally planned to go there today as well so she thought it'd be best if we went together.

Anu: Oh Di, we will have so much fun!

Jai approaches them both at the driveway and moves them on over inside saying that they can continue their conversation in the house.

Jai: Anu, where is Saahil?

He questions just as they all come in. Anu takes Bani by the hand and seats her down onto the couch in their living room, wanting to make her comfy and at home.

Anu: He went out with a few of his friends Bhaiya. He said he would come back in a few hours.

Jai shakes his head in disapproval and mutters, "That boy," before wandering off further into the house, vanishing from sight temporarily.

Anu: Di, I'm glad you're here today. I have been dying to meet with you again ever since that dinner at Kiran Aunty's house.

Bani: (affectionately cupping Anu's cheek) So have I Anu…

It is strange how close Bani feels toward this girl in front of her. In fact, she truly believes that they were meant to be sisters. Its remarkable how much they have in common and how their personalities resemble closely together. Perhaps they had been sisters in one of their past lifetimes, which would explain a lot… What makes her want to believe in this more and more is the way Anu always addresses her by "Didi". Bani has no siblings nor any close cousins so she has never experienced that wonderful joy of being looked up to by someone younger.

Anu: Have you ever seen the museum Di?

Bani: No, I haven't. I heard from a friend of mine that it's wonderful and that I have to visit it whenever I get the time.

Anu: It is true, it's a wonderful museum. I always visit it at least once or twice a year. I would go more but Bhaiya says that there's no need for me to continuously go back and look at the same artworks over and over again.

Bani: Does your Bhaiya not understand what art means to you?

Anu: No, it's not that. He knows what it means and he always buys me supplies so I can draw and buys me occasional paintings as presents. But it becomes into a hassle of him taking me there almost all of the time.

Bani: Well you're old enough to get there yourself, aren't you? Jai doesn't need to take you, does he?

Anu smiles elatedly on being acknowledged as mature adult.

Anu: Bhaiya doesn't approve of me going off to places by myself. It makes him worried and stressed. He prefers that he takes me himself.

Bani is about to question further, not understanding Jai's reasoning. As far as she has gotten to know Anu, she is a very responsible and smart young woman who can handle herself. But she remembers her conversation with Rano previously that Jai's siblings mean a lot to him and he takes his responsibility towards them very seriously. Instead Bani nods her head understandingly. At that moment Jai comes walking back into view with a different set of car keys in his hands and tucking his cell phone into his jean pocket.

Anu: (noticing him) Bhaiya, did you call Saahil?

Jai: Hm. He'll be coming back home sooner than he thought.

Anu hides a smile on hearing this, knowing very well that her brother must have given Saahil a piece of his mind for going off and goofing around with friends when he should be studying for his approaching exams.

Jai: (announces) Let's go…

***************************************************************

Anu and Bani walk close together, side by side, and appreciate the amount of art pieces hanging around the galleries in the museum. Jai follows closely behind, with his hands deep in his pockets, feeling lost and out of place as the girls speak animatedly of the certain art strokes used and the inner meaning of the paintings that most of the time he cannot figure out how they conclude to. But he knows one thing… and that is that Bani can bring an art work to life. Jai is not the one to be amused by this subject, but with the way her velvety voice explains the depictions and small details, tying them together as a whole to create the overall message of the work captivates Jai's attention and mind. He finds himself using this technique of hers in order to understand the art that had always seemed complex to him before.

Later they all decide to get something to eat at the small little caf they have in the museum. Anu and Bani continue their banter on what they had seen and discussing the various impressions they received.

Anu: (suddenly) Bhaiya, which painting was your favorite?

Jai is a little taken aback at this and tries to remember back to what he had seen. There were a lot of quite fascinating works but he finds them not able to hold a candle against the breath taking picture that Bani makes for him right now. She has taken her gorgeous hair out from the pony tail and allows for her tresses to tumble onto her shoulders beautifully, her long curly eyelashes fluttering temptingly ever time her gorgeous honey brown eyes blink, with a tint of green in them, and her pink full lips shining from the subtle gloss applied on them. He takes in a deep breath and averts his eyes off of her, knowing he'd only make it harder for himself to keep away if he keeps on noticing even the littlest things about her that makes her so painfully beautiful.

Jai: (clears his throat) I don't know.

Anu: Bhaiya, were you not paying attention at all when we were in the gallery?

Bani looks at Jai blink slowly at his sister and tries not to laugh at the cute sight he makes right now.

Jai: Of course I was….

He just can't seem to remember what he had seen anymore, all thanks to Bani's thoughts roaming around in his head.

Both Anu and Bani share a smile at this and secretly acknowledge that they don't believe him.

Anu: Sure Bhaiya, if you say so…

Jai: (sighs, admits silent defeat) It doesn't matter whether I enjoyed anything or not, what should matter is that you did. We're here today for you, not me.

Anu instantly smiles at this and brightens up.

Anu: Oh yes I did Bhaiya. I enjoyed even more than usual since Bani Didi was here with us today. ----(turning to Bani) Di, I wish you were really my sister. It would be so fun having you around all the time. Wouldn't it, Bhaiya?

Bani blushes and feels her face heat up with warmth. She watches Jai closely as he looks at Anu's smiling face and grins lightly.

Jai: You can still see her all the time whenever you like princess. -----Do you mind that Bani?

A tingling sensation swarms within her body as she hears her name for the very first time come out from his lips.

Bani: No, not at all. I wouldn't mind. In fact I'd love to have her around.

Anu: Bhaiya, I know I can see her whenever I want. But what I meant was that it would be wonderful if she were actually a part of our family. --------Like if she were to be married to you Bhaiya. That way she would be my sister in a true sense and become my Bhabhi. Oh that would be so great! (clapping her hands together)

Jai coughs immediately after he almost chokes on his water that he had been drinking while Anu had been talking. Bani drops her spoon and flushes dark red from what she has stated. Her, become her bhabhi? Jai's wife? …. She looks over at Jai and nervously watches his reaction. He seems pale and paralyzed by shock just by the very idea.

Anu: Kya? What did I say that was so wrong?

Jai: (regaining himself) Anu, you can't just say stuff like that…. (his voice cracking from his rough coughing)

Anu: Why not? I was just saying what I wanted. And if I don't tell you, then who else will I say it to?

Jai turns to Bani and gives her a sheepish, apologetic look.

Jai: I'm really sorry… My sister can be a little outspoken at times.

Bani, still blushing, shyly shakes her head, showing him that she doesn't mind.

Bani: (softly) It's okay… You don't have to apologize.

Anu: Okay, lagta hai ke Bhaiya raazi nahi hai shaadi ke liye… Paar Di aap Saahil ke saath bhi shaadi kaarsakte! (trans: Okay, looks like bhaiya's not up to the marriage…but you can also marry Saahil!)

Jai's startled to see Bani, instead of taking offense, giggling at the idea and ruffle Anu's hair fondly. He loses himself in her innocent laughter… and his face's features soften.

Bani: Then I am sure Saahil would agree immediately without any hesitation.

Anu: Of course, he is smitten by you…. Hain, hum yehi kaarte hai… Aap Saahil se shaadi kijiye… (trans: Yes, we will do this… You marry Saahil.)

Her laughter long gone, Bani sweetly runs her hand down Anu's hair, smoothing it out.

Bani: Anu, I don't have to be in your family to be family. Blood or marriage is not the only thing that ties people together. It is mainly your heart that does. Dil ka rishta saab rishtoon se alag… aur zyaada kaas hota hai… (trans: The relationship of the heart is different and more special than others.)

Jai looks on at Bani, seeming highly impressed by what she has said.

Anu: Really Di?

Bani: Hain pagli. It does not matter if we are not sisters by blood… We can still be sisters by heart…

Anu: (praising her) That was beautifully said Di… Aur accha hai ke aapne yeh kaha kyon ke main aapki zindagi ko dabaab nahi kaarna chaati aapko Saahil se shaadi kaarwake… (giggling) (trans: And it is good that you have said it because I do not want to ruin your life by having you marry Saahil.)

Bani: Ji, thank you Memsaab… aapne to meri zindaagi ko baachaya. (giggling along with her) (trans: You have saved my life.)

Anu: Don't worry Di, I would never get you married to that duffer despite how desperate I am to have you in the family. He was just a last option since Bhaiya refused… (giving Jai a sad look)

Jai becomes embarrassed by how the discussion has averted back over to him and avoids looking back at Bani, who also like him grows shy again. He runs his fingers through his hair, a very bad habit of his that he can never stop, and eyes his sister.

Jai: I did not refuse…

He answers quietly. He cuts Anu off as he sees her open her mouth excitedly….

Jai: We've been here long enough. We should go.

Bani has to be jolted up from her seat by Anu after Jai suggests he will bring the car to the front of the museum where they will join him. His words, "I did not refuse," continue to whirl around in her head….

Chapter 5:

Bani feels herself being shook roughly in her sleep, disturbing in on her dream. She awakes abruptly and immediately is blinded by the strong sunrays coming from her bedroom windows. She shields her eyes with her hand and slowly makes out the image of Rano's appearance before her.

Bani: (croaks) Rano? What is wrong with you? ---Why are you here so early in the morning?

Rano: Because sleepyhead… I have some important news to tell you.

Bani yawns and turns her back on her, placing her head back onto her soft pillow.

Bani: Baadmein batao… Mujhe abhi sona hai… (trans: Tell me later… I want to sleep.)

Again Rano shakes her harshly, startling Bani completely out of her dazed state.

Rano: Baaanneeee!

Bani: (annoyed) Kya hai Rano! (practically barks) What is it that you need to tell me so early in the morning? Can't you wait?

Rano does something that shocks the living daylights out of Bani. She thrusts her left hand in to her view and presents the huge diamond rock on her ring finger that gleams at her. Bani stares at it wide-eyed, not saying a word since she is so speechless.

Rano: (squeals) I'm engaged!

She closes her eyes and then opens them once again, wondering whether she is delusional and seeing things. But nope, the ring is still there on her finger. Then it finally hits home….

Bani: (screams) You're getting married!

Rano: (equally enthusiastic) I'm getting married!

Bani: Rano!

Rano: Bani!

Bani: Oh my God Rano! (squeals) I can't believe it! How? When? Where?!

Rano: Veer proposed at dinner last night! He said that he believes I'm the one and that he doesn't want to delay anymore and wants to marry me right away! We're getting married in two weeks!

Bani's eyes pop out from their sockets as she hears this bit of information.

Bani: Two weeks! (squeaks)

Rano: (smiling elatedly, blushing) Yes!

Bani: But why so fast? I mean, there's so much I want to do for your wedding! You're my best friend, I have to plan everything! Two weeks isn't enough time!

Rano: I know Bani, but he says he doesn't want to wait and that the sooner we get married the better. His parents have already consulted to a pundit ji and he says that the nearest date is on the 7th, next Friday, or else we will have to wait for another six months. Aur tum to Ranveer ko jaante ho na. He will never learn to be patient.

Tears begin to cloud in Bani's eyes as the news of Rano's engagement starts to have its effect on her. Rano, her best friend and sister of six years, going to be married in two weeks time? She will be a married woman. Things will change… They won't be the same anymore.

Rano: Bani, what's wrong? Why are you crying? (simmering down, worried)

Bani: (trying to blink away her tears) Kuch nahi… I … I am just so happy for you Ranu…. My best friend is getting married… It just feels so surreal.

Rano: (tears glistening in her eyes too, smiling understandingly) I know… I can't believe it myself. But here I am, right in front of you, showing off my beautiful diamond ring.

Bani chuckles a little as this and Rano joins her. She brings out her arms, silently without any words beckoning her to give her a hug. Bani willingly goes into her embrace.

Bani: Ranveer will keep you happy…. I know that. But even then, if he even brings a single tear to your eyes, tell him that I know where he lives.

Rano: (giggling) Shall I give you the new address first?

Bani stills in Rano's arms and pulls back, staring at her with astonishment.

Bani: New address?

Rano: (nodding her head) We will be moving right after we get married.

Bani: (croaks) But why?

Rano: Bani, tum to jaanti thi ke Ranveer Delhi wapas jhaana chaata hai… Wahan uska Bhaiya ka business hai… Now that he has finished his degree, he wants to join him there and work. (trans: Bani, you knew that Ranveer wanted to go back to Delhi. His brother's business is over there.)

Bani: Lekin---I didn't think in a million years that he would take you along! (protesting)

Rano: (scoffs) Kyon? Did you think we'd never get married? That eventually we would break off?

Bani: (sheepishly) No offense Ran, but you were never really good at keeping a stable relationship. I was even surprised that you managed to stay with Veer for this long.

Rano: … (coolly taking this in) Well I guess I can't blame you for thinking like that. I never had a relationship that has lasted more than a couple of months.

Bani nods her head in agreement and laughs as Rano glares at her for doing so.

Rano: Don't poke fun at my failed relationships.

Bani: (changing the topic) Rano, I'm going to miss you. Who is going to irritate me nonstop and make me angry for always being late?

Rano: (smiling) I'll find a way. Don't think that just because I'm getting married and moving away that I won't be a constant bug in your life anymore.

Bani: Good, because I don't want to have to.

Feeling emotional just about now, Rano hugs Bani and begins to tear up.

Rano: (whispers) You are going to fulfill all the duties of a sister in my wedding, do you hear me?

Bani nods her head, choking up herself with tears.

Bani: (her voice watery) Loud and clear.

Rano: Bani, I love you. I am going to miss you so much. Thank you for being a part of my life. You mean everything to me.

Bani: As you do to me Rano.

Rano: You won't forget me after I'm gone?

Bani: Never.

Rano: Will you visit?

Bani: Every time I can.

Rano: Good. Because I think I will go insane by constantly only seeing Veer's face for the rest of my life.

Bani: (laughing through tears) Pagali, then why are you marrying him?

Rano: This may be the only shot I have at getting married missy! I'm not going to let it go away!

Bani: (laughing even more) Hain hain, jhooti. Mujhe pata hai ke tum Veer ko baut pyaar kaarti ho… (trans: Sure sure, liar. I know that you love Veer a lot.)

Rano remains silent, blushing as a response, and tightens her hold on Bani, giving her answer.

Bani: I will hope and pray that you have a very happy, love filled marriage and are blessed with tons of bald chubby babies.

Rano gasps and removes herself out of their embrace. She brings her hands onto her hips and stares down at her.

Rano: Do you wish to destroy my figure?

Bani: Of course! So then I will look beautiful compared to you! (cheeky smile)

Rano: Bani Dixit, I will murder you with my two bare hands!-----Don't you dare pray for that!

Mere nach vich khul gayi baal

Since the wedding was in such a limited time, the Oberois and Debs did not have much time to take part in all of the pre-wedding ceremonies. Therefore, the Obreois held one simple sangeet in which they would mix in the mehendi and haldi rasam all together. The hall buzzes with activity as girls dance to the beat of the music, get henna adorned on their hands, and tease the bride-to-be mercilessly. Rano glows lovely in a simple yellow saree in the midst of a circle of women, who apply haldi on her. This is how Jai sees her as he arrives with his siblings, dressed in a formal black suit, looking handsomer than usual. He smiles as Rano catches his eye and walks forward to join her after she beckons him to do so with a soft nod. He arrives at the small stage where Rano sits on the side of and seats himself down at the floor next to her.

"Arre Jai beta, tum yahan? Hum saabne to socha ke tum nahi aaonga," Rano's mother exclaims with surprise on seeing him. Jai smiles devilishly at her and says sweetly, "Aunty, main aapni behen ki sangeet mein shamaal nah hoon, kya yeh kabhi hosakta?" Karuna Obreoi smiles in a pleased manner at his answer. She fondly pinches his cheek and kisses him on his forehead. "Tum mera saabse accha beta ho…," she replies. "Jaante ho tum, haina?" Jai takes his aunty's hands into his and grins at her.

(trans: Arre Jai beta, you here? We all thought you weren't going to come…… Aunty, is it possible that I won't come to my own sister's sangeet?.... .. You are my good child. You know this?...)

Jai: Jaanta hoon… But if I beat Rano is what I really want to know.

"Bhaiya!," Rano stares at him, appalled. Jai chuckles as his eyes twinkle with mischief.

Rano: Aap bhi na.... Aap hamesha mere peeche kyon paare ho? (trans: You are too much… Why are you always after me?)

Jai: Hey chashmesh. Main tumhse nahi, tumhari maa se baath khar raha hoon. Boliye Aunty… (trans: Hey four eyes, I'm talking to your mother, not you. Tell me Aunty…)

Karuna: Arre beta, jab tumhe jawaab pata hai, phir tum poochte kyon? (trans: Arre son, when you know the answer, why do you ask?)

Jai grins in victory while Rano stares at both of them, clearly upset.

Rano: Ma! Don't pick him over me! Main aapki beti hoon! (trans: I am your daughter!)

Jai: (sighs) Aunty, don't you ever get tired from listening to this mad girl? All the time she is just complaining. She doesn't know how to do anything else.

Rano's eyes pop out like saucers.

Rano: Mad?!

Karuna: (giggles) Bus bhi karo Jai… aur maat saatao meri beti ko. Uski sangeet hai… shaadi karnewali … aab ke liye usko chordo… (trans: Enough already Jai… don't tease my daughter anymore. It's her sangeet….she's getting married… at least now leave her alone.)

Rano: Aab aapko ehsaas hua ke main aapki beti hoon… hmph! (trans: Now you realize I am your daughter…hmph!)

Jai: Arre Rano, did Aunty and Uncle not tell you?

Rano: (suddenly interested in what he has to say) Kya? Tell me what?

Jai: Aunty, aap bhi nah… Kaab thak ke liye aap iss se saach chupoonge? Aaj nahi to kaal pata chaljoonga… (trans: Aunty you are too much… For how long will you keep the truth away from her? If not today, tomorrow she will find out.)

Rano: Kya? Ma, Bhaiya kya kaehreh hai? Kaunsa saach? (trans: What? Ma, what is Bhaiya saying? What truth?)

Jai: Rano tum bura naa mano… joh main tumhe bataanewala hoon… uss se phele yaad karna ke joh bhi kuch hoye, Aunty aur Uncle hamesha tumhare maa baap rehenge… (trans: Rano, don't take this the wrong way… but before I tell you, remember that Aunty and Uncle will always remain as your parents.)

Rano: Bhaiya, aap baataiye to saahi… (trans: Bhaiya, will you at least tell me.)

Jai: Rano… the truth is that you were adopted. You're some drunk hobo's daughter who Aunty and Uncle bumped into and took pity to, so they took you in to unburden him.

Rano: Maaa!!!

Jai chuckles loudly while Rano gets all worked up on throttling him right there. Karuna has to push Rano back to save Jai.

Karuna: Rano, he was kidding sweetie! You are not adopted. For Heaven's sake, you are your father's replica and you know it too! Now calm down.

Rano: (acting all weepy) Aap phele isse kaaediye ke woh yahan se jaaye… I don't want him here. (trans: First tell him to leave from here.)

Jai perches his elbow onto Rano's knee and stares up at her with feigned innocence.

Jai: Kyon Bhai, maine kya kiya? Main to aapni behen ko milna chaata tha… Shaadi karnwali hai woh… (trans: Why, what did I do? I wanted to meet my sister…. She's getting married.)

Rano: (moody) Main aapki koi behen wehen nahi hoon….aur bahna nahi chaati. (trans: I am not your sister.. nor do I want to be.)

Jai: (continuing to laugh) Arre meri pyaari se Rano, gussa maat hoye… main to mazaak khar raha tha… Kya yeh haaq ek bhai ko nahi hai? (trans: My sweet Rano, don't be angry. I was simply joking. Does a brother not have this right?)

Rano smiles a little at him on hearing this. She can never manage to stay mad at him for longer than a minute.

Rano: Hai… lekin you tend to take advantage of it a lot.

Jai: Sorry baba. I promise, I won't harass you until you are safely married. Accha now tell me gulaabo, where is the haldi. Mujhe bhi tum par lagana… (trans: I want to put it on you as well.)

Before Rano can even protest, her mother brings out the container of the haldi, presenting it before Jai. Jai smiles and scoops some up with his fingers. He tenderly smears it onto Rano's cheeks and kisses her affectionately on her head.

Jai: May you have a happy successful marriage. And be blessed with beautiful children who I can spoil rotten.

Rano flushes dark red and mumbles, "Why is everyone mentioning children so soon?"

Jai: Because love, that is what is mostly expected out of marriage.

Rano: I thought marriage was about two people wanting to stay committed and love each other for the rest of their lives. Now what happened to that definition?

Jai: That's bull crap. What people want are children.

Jai laughs as Rano grows glum on hearing this. Karuna simply giggles, enjoying the way Jai always teases her daughter. It is merely his way of showing his love to her.

Jai: Hey Rano… Tumhara Ranveer kaise dekhta? (trans: How does your Ranveer look?)

Rano: (blushes, shy) Bhaiya, he's really handsome. You will see for yourself tomorrow.

Jai: Accha? Is that so? Then you did an excellent thing in choosing Ranveer. He will make up for your lackings with his looks and your children will be beautiful. So no worries there.

Rano: (eyes pop out, her mouth falls open) Ma!!!

Karuna: Arre Rano, shaant hojao… Tum bhi nah… Saab kya sochonge? ---Ke Dulhaan pagal hai? Chup chaap baati raho… Jai doesn't mean anything he says… (trans: Rano, calm down… You are too much. What will everything think----that the bride is crazy?)

Rano: Then why does he say it? (whimpering)

Karuna: Arre pagli, woh tujhse pyaar karta hai… yeh to uska taareeka hai dekhaanliye… (trans: He loves you… this is his way of showing that to you.)

Jai: (sighs) Finally, someone who understands me…. Kya Rano, you are such a bummer. You take everything too seriously.

Rano: Bhaiya, you said earlier you would not tease me any longer. Then what are you doing right now?

Jai: I did not tease. I was only saying the truth.

Rano: Mama!

Karuna gets up and waves her hands at them in tired defeat.

Karuna: No more Mama. Your Mama is going to go check on some things. I will be back later.

Rano: No mama, don't leave me alone with Bhaiya!

Jai: Arre, what do I look like to you? Some kind of animal who's going to eat you?

Rano: Worse.

Karuna: (sighs) I will call for Bani, teek hai? Woh tumhe bachaolongi. (trans: She will save you.)

Jai's chuckles subside as he hears Bani's name and he grows silent, which Rano notices right away.

"Bani beta!," Karuna calls out for her across the hall. Bani, who had been speaking to Anu at the entrance way, turns around on being acknowledged. Jai keeps his gaze lowered as she approaches them at the stage and smiles politely at Rano's mother.

Bani looks elegantly beautiful in a simple light blue faux georgette saree with sequins and bead work on the border and blouse. She wears her hair out in wavy subtle curls and has long dangling earrings adorning her ears as well silver bangles as her only jewelry.

Bani: Ji Aunty?

Karuna: (returning the smile) Beta, tum yahan Rano ke paas baatsakti ho? Mujhe zarra kaam hai… Please. (trans: Beta, will you sit here with Rano? I have some work.)

Bani switches her gaze over to Rano and sees Jai there beside her, looking elsewhere. Her heart rises on the sight of him, looking gallantly handsome in a black attire, seeming every bit like the prince he is. Her cheeks bloom red on the thought and she turns her attention back to Aunty, who waits for her reply.

Bani: (sweetly) J-Ji… I don't mind… Aap jaasakte… (trans: You may go.)

Karuna flashes a thankful smile before vanishing off to complete some pending work. Bani hesitantly nears Rano and Jai at the stage, shyly tucks a lock of her hair behind her ear, and ignores the knowing look on her best friend's face.

Just as Bani sits down on the other side of Rano, Jai rubs the back of his neck nervously and says hastily, "Uh Rano, main chaalta hoon… Tum yahan tumhari friends ke saath baathein karo… Main Uncle se milta hoon…" Bani's face falls with disappointment on him leaving but is surprised on seeing Rano quickly take hold of his arm, preventing him from going. (trans: Uh, Rano, I'll take your leave… You stay here and talk with your friends… I will go and meet Uncle.)

Rano: Kya Bhaiya… You don't want to tease me anymore? Whenever Mama and Papa aren't around, you always take advantage of the opportunity to do so even more. Aab kya hua?

Jai: Kuch nahi… I just really think I should at least meet Uncle.

Rano: (retorts) You see Papa all the time. You are here today for me, not him. You stay put right here. Aapki behen ki shaadi hai… aapka uncle ka nahi… (trans: It is your sister's wedding… not your uncle's.)

Jai: Main yahan saab laadkiyan ke beech kya karoonga? (trans: What will I do here amongst all you girls?)

Rano: Yeh aapne saahi kaha…Hey Bani, Bhaiya kya karega? (trans: You are right… Hey Bani, what will Bhaiya do?)

Bani blushes with having Jai's eyes on her at that precise moment. She lowers her head and softly answers…

Bani: Tumse baath karega … tumhari shaadi ke baare… Veer ke baare mein poochonge… tum dono ke plans sunoge… (trans: He will talk to you… about your wedding… ask about Veer…. Listen to both of your plans.)

Rano: Correct! ---Aapne suna Bhaiya?! Aap yeh saabh karoonge… joh Bani neh kaha… (trans: Did you hear bhaiya?! You will do everything that Bani has said.)

Jai keeps his eyes on Bani, whereas she avoids looking back at him….

Rano: Aab jhaldi se poochlo…. Yeh mauka aapko phir kabhi nahi milonga… I will refuse to tell later. (trans: Now ask quickly. You won't get this chance ever again.)

Jai: Teek hai… Tum dono neh kya kya plans----

Rano: Wait, wait, wait!

Rano bites down on her tongue and hits herself on her head.

Rano: Main to bhulgi! Main to Bani ko aapse introduce bhi nahi kiya! Sorry na, bad manners. ---- Bhaiya, yeh hai meri best friend, Bani Dixit! Hum Mumbai mein mile the… aur tab se best friends raahe! Aur yeh yahan--- (trans: I forgot! I did not introduce Bani to you!---Bhaiya, this is my best friend! We both met in Mumbai and have been friends since then.)

Bani glares at Rano, not understanding what she is up to. Her friend knows that she and Jai have met. Then what is she doing?

Jai: You don't need to do introductions… Hum phele bhi milchuke… Kiran Aunty ki baanji hai… main yeh jaanta hoon… (trans: We have met before… She is Kiran Aunty's niece… I know this.)

Rano: (feigning shock) Oh, really? … Then you two must already be friends! ----Isn't she wonderful Bhaiya?

Jai: (stammers, sheepishly) … Err, h-hain...

Bani blushes further and stares down at her lap. Rano smiles widely, pleased by his response.

Rano: Bani bilkul meri behen jaise hai… isliye you will see her doing a lot of work and dancing for my wedding. Bani se better dancer hai nahi! She is simply amazing… Aap dekhiye na… kaise who saab ki aur aapki hosh uraadongi… (winks) (trans: Bani is just like my sister… No one is a better dancer than bani. You just watch how she leaves you and everyone else senseless…)

Bani: Ranoo… (terribly shy, pleading for her to stop)

Rano: Arre, saach to kaehri hoon main … Dekhiye bhaiya, meri behen saab kuch khar rahi hai meri shaadi ke liye… aap kya karoonge? (trans: I am saying the truth…Look Bhaiya, my sister is doing everything possible for my wedding…. What will you do?)

Jai: Main yahan hoon… kya yeh tumhare liye kaafi nahi hai? (trans: I am here… Is that not enough for you?)

Rano: Not at all…

Jai: To phir kya chaati ho tum? (trans: Then what do you want?)

Rano: Arre, a little work for my wedding would be nice Bhaiya. It would show that you actually care for me…

Jai: Accha, to phir tum sochti ho ke main tumhari shaadi ke liye kuch bhi nahi kaar raha hoon… (trans: Oh, so you think I'm not doing anything for your wedding?)

Rano: That's what it seems like…

Rano yelps in pain as Jai tugs hard on her ear.

Jai: Hey chashmesh, who do you think helped in decorating your mandap today, huh? Who ordered the flowers for your wedding? Who helped Aunty send out cards? Who's managing your reception at your father's hotel?

Rano: Ow, Bhaiya! (whining)

Bani stifles her giggles as she watches this cute relationship of brother and sister displayed right before her. She smiles softly at the scene and watches with silent eyes as Jai chuckles and enjoys harassing Rano, who pleads for him to stop. As far as she has known him, she has never seen him so relaxed and behaving truly like himself without any self restraints.

Rano: Okay, main maanti hoon ke aap baut saara kuch khar rahe hai… Sorry that I doubted you. But seriously Bhaiya, this is not a way to treat the bride-to-be.

Jai: Oh really? Then how am I supposed to? Am I supposed to get you a throne and carry you around in it?

Rano: (smirks) That's not such a bad idea.

Bani, who hears Karuna call out for her, slips away without interfering in their new banter and doesn't attract much notice to herself…. It isn't until awhile that Rano again concedes defeat and looks to her side for some support from her friend, only not to find her there.

Rano: Arre, yeh Bani kahan chaalagayi? ---Bhaiya did you see where she went? (trans: Arre, where has Bani gone?)

Jai: (equally surprised) No… I didn't know that she left.

Rano: Kahan gaayi hai woh… Hey Preeti, did you see where Bani went? (trans: Where did she go…)

Rano asks a girl behind her, who was involved in deep discussion with the other girls around her.

Preeti: She left quite awhile ago. I don't know where she went though.

Rano: Kamaal hai… yeh Bani bhi naa… She is supposed to stay by my side.

Jai: Woh kyon?

Rano: Arre, she is my best friend! Obviously I need her with me at all times.

Jai: I will never be able to understand you girls. You all just can't bear a moment without one another. Haar jaaga peh dekho, tum saab hamesha ek dusre ke saath ho. (trans: Wherever you look, you all are always together.)

Rano: Yes, because we all would just die without each other. (emphasizing die) …. Bhaiya… please, aap zarra dekho ke woh hai kahan… I want her to be the first to apply mehendi on me… (trans: Please, would you go see where she is.)

Jai: Rano, she's not a little girl that has to be looked after… She'll find her way back. Maybe she's busy in some work.

Rano: But you heard Preeti, she left awhile ago. What could possibly be keeping her so busy for so long? Please jaaye na… Aur waise bhi, it's getting time for the girls to perform, and she's the one who's going to start it off.

Jai: Raanoo… if you want her here so bad, then why don't you go?

Rano: Arre, I have haldi on me all over… I'm not gonna go walking around. Please, Bhaiya.

Jai: (grim) I'll send Anu to go look for her.

Rano: No, no---not her, only you.

Jai: (raises a brow) Kyon?

Rano licks her lips nervously with his fixed eyes on her as she tries to come up with a decent excuse quickly.

Rano: Don't you see? She's busy at the moment. She's talking to her friends. Bechari wants to catch up with them. Don't disturb her. You on the other hand are doing absolutely nothing. So you can go and look for her.

Jai: But----

Rano: Bhaiya, just do it. (demanding)

Jai scowls as he gives Rano one last look before getting up and walking off. Rano smiles in victory while watching him go away in search of her friend….

************************************************************

Jai wasn't really planning on going to find Bani. In fact, he didn't feel it was necessary. She would eventually come back. Rano was panicking for no reason. And why should it be him that goes to look for her? It wasn't until Karuna Aunty bumped into him and worriedly asked him if he knew where she was. That was when he was beginning to get worried as well.

"I sent her to get the camera from my room, but that was such a long time ago. I haven't seen her since," she said with concern and slight confusion. He took her hands and simply nodded comfortingly. "I'll find her", he replied before looking around….

*************************************************************

Bani, after a few moments of searching, found the digital camera and made her way out of the Karuna's room to go on back downstairs, where the occasion was taking place. As she looks through the camera curiously, she hears a bark and looks up to find Rano's large brown and black dog staring at her with his paws stretched out, preparing to leap out into a run. She is astonished to see him there as he was strapped and kept safely away from everyone in one of the guest rooms. She panics just as he does so, headed straight at her and quickly tries to doge him by rushing into one of the rooms, only to have him following her tail. Not knowing how else to avoid the humongous dog, she gets herself up onto the dresser in the room and watches the dog excitedly trying to reach her, jumping up high, seeming as if he wants to attack her…..

*****************************************************************

Karuna Aunty had said she sent Bani to her room, so that is where he went first. On reaching the top of the stairs, he hears a familiar barking and muffled sounds coming from the end of the hallway. He hurriedly follows the noise and turns the doorknob, swinging the door open revealing a shocking surprise to him. He watches momentarily as Peter leaps up high to get Bani, who stands on top of the dresser, begging him to leave her alone…. Bani leans back frighteningly against the wall behind her, placing both hands on it, and looks absolutely helpless without a clue of how to handle the situation. That is when Jai steps in and grabs Peter by his loose leash, trying to pull him back away from her.

Jai: (demanding tone) Peter, no! Get back! Sit down. Sit!

Peter whimpers and listens to Jai after struggling with him for awhile. Jai pats his head gently before eyeing a scarred Bani, who stares back at him wide eyed. He offers his hand to her in order to help her get down from the high height from the dresser top to the floor.

Jai: Sorry about Peter. He just gets excited when he sees people he likes. He means no harm.

Bani: (her voice trembling) But he was attacking me…

Bani slips her small hand into his while Jai lazily smiles at what she says….

Jai: He's not vicious. He's a friendly dog…. a little too friendly at times. He perhaps just wanted you to pet him…

As Bani makes a movement to get down with the support from Jai, Peter immediately gets up from his sitting position and once again starts pouncing up and down, eager to greet Bani while barking mad. Bani pulls back and gives Jai a worried look, who tries to move the dog back and out of the way.

Jai: He really seems to like you…. (clearly amused as he's never seen him so excited before)

Bani: Can you tell him not to like me? (feebly asks)

Jai tries hard not to laugh at her cute innocence and settles for a grin instead.

Jai: It seems impossible at this point. He is clearly dazzled by you. (light chuckle)

Peter grows more and more eager by the second and Jai finds that he can't get Bani down without having her attacked by the dog. He does something that catches Bani off guard… he pulls her forward with their still clasped hands and swings her up in his arms, causing her to softly gasp and stare at him with a bewildered expression. She brings her arms around his neck and hugs herself close to him as Peter starts to climb up against Jai's legs to reach her….burying her face into the crook of his neck. Jai lightly pushes him back with his leg and begins to walk out from the room with Peter following after them. Knowing very well that this would be the only way in handling Peter, Jai uses Bani to lure him back into the guest room as his black eyes are transfixed on her. Reaching the end of the hall, Jai kicks open the door and gingerly places Bani onto the bed. However, Bani protectively hangs onto him for dear life as Peter once again heads for her, looking thrilled. Jai steps in front of Bani's view, blocking it from the dog and takes him by his leash. He leads him over to the other end of the room where he ties him to a desk leg. Jai gives Peter a sympathetic smile while petting him affectionately…

Jai: You're a good dog… but you're just scaring her at the moment. Be a good boy and stay here.

In a sulky manner, Peter sits down next to the desk and sinks his head onto his front legs. Jai turns around and looks at Bani, who still stares at Peter cautiously. He smiles reassuringly at her…

Jai: It's fine now… He won't get out this time.

Bani slowly moves off of the bed and joins him where he stands. She looks at him embarrassed with her cheeks slightly pink.

Bani: (softly) Thank you…

Jai: (nods his head, acknowledging her gratitude) … Karuna aunty and Rano were getting worried about where you disappeared off to…

Bani: (sheepish) Hain woh… I just didn't know how to take care of him… I saw him and panicked… He wouldn't let me go.

Jai: (soft smile) I understand… You should go on downstairs… Rano's waiting for you.

Bani: You're not coming?

Jai: I'll be down in a minute…. But you go on….

Bani nods her head and gives him one last hesitant look before leaving from the room, her heart thumping loudly against her chest. She arrives downstairs with blushed cheeks…..

Jai looks back over to Peter and grabs him a chew toy to keep him occupied. He also turns to leave, but seeing the digital camera left behind on the bed stops him. He takes it into his hands and proceeds on downstairs himself…

********************************************************

Just as Bani comes off the last step of the stairs, Karuna aunty approaches her with query.

Karuna: Arre Bani beta, where were you? I was getting worried?

Bani: (embarrassed) Woh.. aunty… I got caught up by the dog. He got loose and wouldn't let me go.

Karuna: Peter is out of his leash? (worried)

Bani: Nahi nahi, not anymore. The problem is handled.

Karuna: Well have you brought the camera like I asked you to?

Bani is about to answer in an affirmative until she realizes that she has left it upstairs as she was so caught up in being harassed by the dog. She curses herself. Before she can even apologize to Karuna, she hears a voice from behind cut her off….

"Here it is Aunty… sorry for the delay," Jai answers for her instead, coming off the last step of the stairs as well, standing right beside her. Karuna gladly takes it from him and smiles.

Karuna: Thank you beta….

Jai just grins. Bani blushes by their close proximity. Karuna turns to her.

Karuna: Bani beta, you should hurry on now. Rano has been waiting for you for awhile now. Besides, the girls say that they are ready to perform.

Bani: Ji.

Jai watches Bani leave in a flash and disappear into the crowds of people….. It isn't until awhile later that he spots her again…..

***************************************************************

Hearing music begin and the assembling of girls turns the guests' attention over to the dance floor. The performance starts off with a lead girl in the front with the rest as background dancers behind her. Her back is turned faced to the audience and gracefully her hips move rhythmically along the beat of the music…..

Chunari chunari

Chunari chunari

Chunari chunari

Chunari chunari ……

Lal ganj ke lal bangle se lal chunariya layi….

She turns, revealing herself to the audience, and sways across the dance floor…. The crowd erupts into encouraging cheers. Jai, who stands off to the edge of the stage sharing a drink with Oberoi Uncle, is thunderstruck on the sight of Bani performing, looking gorgeous in a beautiful red and orange lehenga choli that does justice to her figure…..

Chunari Chunari

Chunari chunari

Lal rang me daal daal ke lal lal rangvaayi

Chunari Chunari

Chunari chunari

The girls behind her wave their dupattas around in sync to the music while Bani continues to dance beautifully before them in a playful manner…..

Aaja na chhoole meri chunari sanam

Kuchh na mein boloon tujhe meri kasam

Aayi jawani sar pe mere

Tere pe kya karoon jawani pe rehem

Aaja na chhoole meri chunari sanam

Kuchh na mein boloon tujhe meri kasam

Aayi jawani sar pe mere

Tere pe kya karoon jawani pe rehem

Hay

Aaja na chhoole meri chunari sanam

Kuch na mein boloon tujhe meri kasam

Chunari Chunari

Chunari Chunari

Meri chunari lal rang ki sharmaaye ghabraaye

Tu jo daale ispe nazar ye aur lal ho jaaye

Chunari Chunari

Chunari Chunari

Preeti, the girl from before, dressed under the disguise of a male, appears onto the stage and takes a hold of Bani's dupatta and lips sings along the lyrics. Rano blushes bright red as she realizes that the man is supposed to be Ranveer, dressed in a similar fashion as him, and her friend is supposed to resemble her…..The guest laugh at this in an amused manner.

Teri chunari lipat lipat ke pagal mujhe banaaye

Pehle se hi tadap raha tha aur mujhe tadpaaye

Jane tamanna kar na aise sitamb

Preeti pulls on the stole and causes Bani to twirl into her arms and together they move their shoulders in coordination.

Kuch na mein bolu tujhe meri kasam

Aayi jawani sar pe mere

Tere pe kya karoon jawani pe rehem

Hay

Aaja na chhoole meri chunari sanam

Kuchh na mein boloon tujhe meri kasam

Aayi jawani sar pe mere

Tere pe kya karoon jawani pe rehem

Chunari Chunari

Chunari Chunari

They begin to dance one on one after Preeti drapes the dupatta around her own shoulders and follows Bani's in pursuit….

Chikne Chikne badan se tere sar sar chunari sarke

Aisa lage ke bin baadal ambar pe bijli kadke

Chunari Chunari

Chunari Chunari

Jee karta ye bijli mein tujhpe aaj bithaoon

Tujhko bhar loon baahon mein ye chunari tujhe udaoon

Badta hi jaye dard ho na khatam

Kuch na mein bolu tujhe meri kasam

Hoo...

Aayi jawani sar pe mere

Tere pe kya karoon jawani pe rehem

Hay hay

Aaja na chhoole meri chunari sanam

Kuchh na mein boloon tujhe meri kasam

Aayi jawani sar pe mere

Tere pe kya karoon jawani pe rehem .

Taking the stole, Preeti brings it around Bani and teasingly dances with her for a moment before releasing her, making her weave out of the dupatta and twirl off stage only to fall into a pair of masculine arms that steady her….

Aaja na choole meri chunari sanam

Kucch na mein boloon tujhe meri kasam….

Bani glances up and meets Jai's intense gray eyes that stare back at her as well. She feels her breath caught in her throat….

Chunari chunari

Chunari chunari

Chunari chunari

Chunari chunari…..

Slowly the music fades out and the cheerful applause and whistling from the audience is what brings them out of their eye lock. Jai awkwardly lets go of her from his hold… Bani blushes and doesn't meet his eyes afterwards as Preeti comes after her and brings her to the center of the stage to give a courteous bow. Rano gets up from her seated position and approaches the both of them on the dance floor, hitting them first in a scolding manner for embarrassing her so much, but then lovingly taking them into an emotional hug.

Jai watches Bani being led away with the other girls with a besotted look and sees her shyly glancing back at him before leaving from his sight…..

Chapter 6:

She joins her friend on the bed in a trance, lost in her own floating thoughts, and fails to listen to a single word that comes flying out of Rano's mouth. Since the next day is Rano's wedding as well as the last day remaining in Mount Abu, Bani was obliged to stay over at her friend's for the night to treasure the last bit of time she has with her best friend before their whole lives change from here on out. Bani lays gingerly onto the mattress and pulls the cover over her, placing her head comfortingly onto her pillow while a soft smile lingers on her lips. In the middle of Rano's ranting, she realizes that her friend has lost interest and is barely putting any input into what she has to say. She curiously looks over to her and catches the dreamy look on her face. With a knowing smirk, she clears her throat.

Rano: So, I noticed that Jai Bhaiya couldn't take his eyes off of you all night.

This does the trick. Bani's eyes quickly maneuver over in Rano's direction. Rano smiles on captivating her friend's full and undivided attention. A blush creeps onto her cheeks.

Bani: Really? (shyly)

Rano: Well why not? You were looking very beautiful tonight…. Well second beautiful after me of course. (ends playfully)

Bani feels her heart begin to flutter.

Rano: He is obviously very attracted to you Bani. (stating as a matter of fact) You're not the only one burning in desire.

Bani: (hot red) I'm not burning in anything… (mutters)

Rano: (ignoring her) Jai Bhaiya definitely is feeling something towards you…. You should take this to your advantage…

Bani: How can you say this for sure? (still blushing red)

Rano: I think I know my Bhaiya well enough, Bani. And trust me, I am not mistaken about what he feels for you.

With these words echoing in her mind and her heart pounding loud in her chest, Bani turns her back on her friend while pulling the covers up to her neck as Rano wishes her a goodnight after turning the lamp light off…..

***************************************************************

Jai stares up at his bare ceiling with his hands folded beneath his head, laying half covered under the comforter in his bed and unaffected by the loud drizzle and thunder brewing outside…. He finds himself incapable to divert his thoughts from Bani. He isn't able to understand the strong impression she has on him. After all, why is it that he only thinks of her? He's acting like some kind of infatuated teenage boy…. What is wrong with him?

Hearing a creak from his bedroom door, he turns his attention over to the doorway where he sees his sister standing, looking slightly frightened and in need of some comfort.

"Bhaiya," she says so innocently that it instantly makes him cave. Without any words, he lifts up his covers, motioning her to join him. Smiling, she leaves the door ajar and comes to his side, slipping under the comforter. Jai places an affectionate kiss on her forehead and whispers for her to go to sleep. Anu nods sleepily and gathers the comforter close to her. Ever since Jai could remember, Anu has always been afraid of thunder storms. It's a fear of hers that she has had since a small child and one that he believes that might never go away. At the start he would always to go her room to soothe her and put her to sleep, but it somehow became into Anu instantly going to him instead in the beginning of a storm. She would never hesitate anymore in running to her brother for safety.

Just after Jai sighs he feels his sister move and suddenly say….

Anu: Rano Didi's sangeet was fun, wasn't it?

He had actually been waiting for her to start up a conversation. Her sister was never one to be quiet.

Jai: Hmmm. It was.

Anu: Can you believe she is getting married? (excited)

Jai: (same nonchalant tone) No… but she's marrying a good man. That's all I wish for.

Her brother's lack of interest to strike a conversation with her simmers her down for a long moment before she speaks her mind once again….

Anu: Bani Di was looking beautiful tonight…. Wasn't she?

Jai gives no reply to this which makes Anu push the topic even more.

Anu: She's a great dancer… don't you think so?

Again, no reply. Anu scrambles through her mind for a second before proceeding….

Anu: I'll be sad when she leaves… won't you?

Jai remains silent, not knowing whether he should answer her questions or not. Yes, she was looking beautiful at the sangeet, as she does all the time. Yes, she is a wonderful dancer. Will he miss her when she leaves though? …. No, he firmly tells himself. However, he is unable to neglect the part inside of him that secretly whispers "Yes." After a long hesitating silence, Anu says something that causes his head to whirl….

Anu: (softly) I think you and Bani Di are perfect for each other…. You two will make a lovely couple… You should give it a chance Bhaiya….

He lets her words linger for a moment before clearing his throat and saying in a silencing manner, "Go to sleep Anu…. You have school in the morning." Disheartened by this yet hoping she has made some kind of an effect on him, Anu listens obediently and sweetly wishes him goodnight before turning and making herself comfortable.

A moment later Jai hears his bedroom door open slightly more again and lifts the covers from his other side up to let his brother in, who surprisingly hates storms as well, especially loud thundering ones such as now. He, however, would never admit the fear like his sister.

Jai: No funny business…. (warns)

Saahil: No funny business. (promises)

His siblings easily slip into a peaceful sleep with him by their sides, whereas he is kept late into the night with his sister's words reeling in his head…..

Give it a chance….

****************************************************************

The next morning Jai found himself wrapped in planning Rano's reception at the hotel, making everything perfect in time for the actual event. It was around five in the evening when he decided to go on home and get ready for the wedding which was beginning in an hour…..

****************************************************************

The time for Rano's wedding approached fast and before Bani knew it, she was helping her best friend in dressing herself for her wedding day. She had to use all the strength inside of her to prevent herself from tearing. She would not cry at her friend's wedding, this was something that she promised herself. Sure Rano would be moving away, but hadn't they kept their friendship intact the past two years when she had left Mumbai to go back to Mount Abu? Nothing would change, Bani continued to reassure herself.

During the act of styling her hair, Rano's bedroom door opens and together they see Karuna Aunty walking in with Anu by her side who looks lovely in a pink lehenga choli. Together the girls smile at her.

Rano: Anu, I'm so glad you are finally here.

Anu: Sorry Rano Di, Bhaiya came a little late from the hotel. He was busy in the preparations for the reception.

Anu explains to her while joining Bani and some others girls in dolling Rano up. Rano merely smiles at her, showing she understands. She then flashes a knowing look over to her best friend, who avoids looking back at her and silently blushes to herself.

Rano: Hey Anu, why don't you bring Jai Bhaiya on up here? I'd be so happy to see him.

Bani's eyes widen on this and she immediately yanks hard on Rano's hair who lets out a yelp of pain from this.

Rano: Ouch Bani! Kya khar rahi ho?

Bani: Sorry Ran, but there was a knot in your hair that I needed to get out. (she says as a cover up)

Anu: Really? You want Jai Bhaiya to come here? (giggling) I don't think he'd want to either way. He'd get uncomfortable with so many girls in one room.

Rano: Oh he'd get used to it. Just tell him that I'm asking for him.

Again Bani pulls on her friend's hair, this time harder than before. Rano's eyes begin to tear and she gives up on the idea. She immediately stops Anu, who makes a movement to leave to call for her brother.

Rano: No, no. Forget it Anu. You're right, he'd definitely hate it with so many girls here. I guess I'll just see him at the reception.

Bani smiles in victory while Rano becomes glum. She wasn't going to risk having her whole hair yanked off if she did get Anu to call for Jai. She'd just have to find another way to tease Bani instead.

Karuna: Rano, you'll be fine here won't you?

Rano: Yes Mama… Bani and Anu are here with them. You can go on.

Karuna lovingly kisses her on her head before fleeing off to complete other tasks. Just as she leaves, the girls hear the approaching noise of a band from a distance. All of them, with the exception of Bani, Anu, and Rano, run to the bedroom window and gaze at the arriving bharat, giggling while making comments about their Jiju-to-be. Rano blushes from their approving comments about Ranveer.

After draping Rano's red dupatta over her head, Bani declares that she is finally ready. Rano looks at her reflection in the mirror, silently admiring the grand transformation of a girl into a young woman. Anu and Bani gush together at her appearance for a moment before the girls distract Rano in taking her to the window to watch her groom riding on a horse to take her away. Bani smiles affectionately at her friend who glows with so much radiance and happiness that it brings tears to her eyes. She suddenly turns to Anu who stands beside her.

Bani: Anu…. You stay here with Rano. I will come back after completing some work.

She had some pending work remaining as well to do for the wedding. Anu nods her head in agreement and watches her Bani Di leave discreetly from the room……

************************************************************

As soon as Jai arrived at the Oberoi's residence for the wedding, he was given instant company of Oberoi uncle and his fellow friends. He knew a few of the men so slipped into an easy flowing conversation with them. Jai didn't associate with most of the young men in his age group as didn't have time to carry on a social life of his own. As well as he couldn't relate to most of their lives. They were just regular guys with carefree lifestyles with no sort of responsibilities pressured onto them. They still, he noted, had a long way to go before reaching that point.

Mr. Oberoi: Oh… Jai beta… If you don't mind, son, would you mind getting me another drink?

Jai: (eying him) I don't know Uncle… are you even supposed to be drinking at all?

Mr. Oberoi: (smiling) Come on Jai, be a sport. It's my daughter's wedding…. I think your aunty will understand.

Jai can't help but smile himself. He knows that his Oberoi Uncle will be in for it once Karuna Aunty learns he has took to drinking again. Nonetheless he agrees as he is slowly losing interest in the older men's heated discussions. As he makes his way over to the bar, passing by groups of people by walking off to the side to avoid them, he meets himself into a tumble with someone who knocks into him, directing his attention over to her and holding her steady with his hands. Her wide hazel eyes connect with his as she leans into him for support, balancing herself. Jai can't restrain himself from grinning at the sight of Bani before him, looking as lost and vulnerable as a confused deer. He does though manage to hold in his laughter. What is with this girl always either tripping or falling? She must have really weak ankles….he concludes.

Bani: (stammers) I-I'm so sorry…. I wasn't looking----

In the middle of her long apology, Jai makes the time useful by drinking in her appearance. She is stunningly gorgeous in a ravishing saree of a light shade of blue paired with a red-orange blouse, her hair let out open straight, long dangling earrings adoring her ears, silver bangles covering her wrists, and a simple, elegant diamond necklace displayed on her neck.

She also has an alluring smell to her that makes him momentarily weak. Regaining his composure, he clears his throat and cuts into her lengthy way of saying sorry.

Jai: (smiling it off) It's alright… I wasn't paying much attention either.

Bani flushes under his gaze and nervously switches her attention over to the fallen basket that she had been carrying, containing the garland of bright orange flowers. He follows the direction of her eyes' focus.

Jai: Here, let me help you with that…

Bani hesitantly joins him in collecting the fallen flowers and placing them into the basket. They do this in silence and as they both reach for the last flower remaining, their eyes lock as their hands touch. Bani's cheeks blaze dark red as she removes her hand away, allowing Jai to take it and put it along with the other flowers. Jai watches as she takes the basket from him and murmur a soft thank you before turning to leave. An item near his shoes catches his attention and he moves closer to see what it is. Lowering down, he takes the silver object into his hand and runs his thumb along it. He looks up to see that she is nowhere in sight and keeps the anklet enclosed in his tight fist……

*****************************************************************

The wedding proceeded on smoothly and within some time Rano Oberoi became into Mrs. Rano Deb, officially wedded to Ranveer Deb. After some fun masti of hiding the groom's shoes and receiving money for returning them, it was now time for the newly wed's wedding reception which would be taking place in a booked hall in the Star Hotel….

***********************************************************

Because Anu decided that she wanted to get ready with her Bani Di, Jai had to take a detour to Kiran Aunty's house in order to pick her up. As Saahil and him wait for the ladies to be dressed, Kiran Mausi keeps them company. They wait by the stairs as it is time for them to be leaving soon.

Saahil: What is it with women and taking so long in getting ready?

Kiran: Well in order to look good does require some time….

Saahil: Too much time if you ask me…. Besides, I don't see why Anu needs to look good. No one's going to be looking at her either way.

Kiran& Jai: (admonishingly) Saahil.

"Saahil, you are so mean. Sometimes I wonder if you are even my real brother," Anu comments as she finally makes an appearance and comes gliding down the stairs. Jai and Saahil both look relieved on seeing her finally come and join them.

Saahil: Good. The maharani has finally decided to join us. Now can we go Bhaiya?

Kiran: Arre, Bani hasn't come down yet. Anu, what is taking Bani so long?

Anu: Didi's coming Aunty. Don't worry. ---- See, here she comes right now.

They turn to see Bani walking down the steps and each are bowled by the sight. She wears a beautiful royal Persian green georgette saree that does justice to her figure and matching jewelry. A blush looms in her cheeks as she notices Jai's eyes lingering on her. She wears a feeble apologetic smile on her face, feeling bad for keeping them all waiting for her.

Kiran smiles widely at her radiantly beautiful niece and approaches her. She affectionately cups her cheek.

Kiran: Kissi ki nazaar nah lagjaaye mere pyaari si gudiya par....

Bani flushes from embarrassment.

Bani: (beseechingly) Mausi, please...

Understanding that her niece is feeling embarrassed, especially since everyone's eyes are already on her, she diverts their attention back to the time.

Kiran: Chalo… Bani bhi aaye… Aab hum saab chale? (trans: Bani is even here… Now shall we all go?)

Seeing that it would be reasonable for all them to take one vehicle rather than two, they all gather into Jai's car with him driving, Kiran sitting up front with him, and the rest in the back. Bani sits behind Jai's seat and nervously keeps her eyes on the window rather than occasionally meeting his in the rear view mirror. Jai parks as they arrive before the hotel and everyone get out from the car, ready in making their way over to the front doors of the building. As Jai looks behind him, he notices Bani looking slightly flustered and confused, still remaining in her seat in the car. He looks at her for a second, not understanding why she won't get out from the car.

Jai: What's wrong?

He asks her and sees her blush a little, feeling slightly embarrassed about something. She meekly answers him from the other side of the glass window.

Bani: I don't know how to get the door to open…. (admitting shyly, not able to find the lock)

Jai bites back a grin and opens his own door. He looks back at her from his driver seat and reaches over to unlock her door from the lock near the handle. He pushes it open and gives her another look, receiving a sheepish expression from her. He steps back out from the car and closes his own door while Bani gets out herself. Just as she takes a step, she twists her ankle awkwardly and voices her pain.

Anu: Didi? Kya hua?

Anu turns and comes back towards the other side of the car where Bani balances herself by keeping her hand against the car door. As do Kiran and Saahil, curious as to what has happened.

Kiran: Bani beti, what happened?

Bani: Woh…. I…. I think I hurt my ankle Mausi…

Saahil: How'd you manage to do that? (mockingly)

Anu: Shut up Saahil….. Bhaiya, could you take a look at her ankle?

As Jai is the closest to her, he lowers down and examines her slightly red ankle. He lightly runs his thumb over it and can feel the swelling beginning to grow. Bani's cheeks bloom red by his touch and becomes warm by his silent concern for her.

Jai: She definitely twisted it….

Kiran: Oh Bani… does it hurt? (fussing worriedly over her)

Bani: Mausi… don't worry. It's just a small sprain. It'll be fine. (trying to calm her uneasiness)

Jai: Hmmm… it'd help if we had some ice.

Anu: Well can't we just get that from inside?

Jai: We could. (agreeing)

Bani: (intervening) That's not necessary. It's not even that serious. I'm sure I can walk just fine.

Jai: (giving her a look) I doubt that… Your swelling is just starting to grow. It's going to be very painful for you to walk.

Kiran: Here sweetie, let's get you into a comfortable position while we get some ice for you.

She refers to her awkward standing state.

Kiran: ….Jai, would you mind?

Jai, without any words, gathers Bani into his arms (shocking her in the process), hoisting her off her feet and gingerly places her onto the trunk of his car so she is at a good eye level with him and everyone else. She practically swoons from their close proximity and by the smell of his intoxicating cologne.

Jai: Saahil, go into the hotel's kitchen and ask for some ice. Tell them that I sent you.

Saahil: Bhaiya, everyone at the hotel knows you and won't question you. It'd be better if you went. I can stay here with Bani and look after her instead. (willingly offers)

Bani and Anu share a glance at this, both understanding why Saahil is so intent on staying behind. Jai, however, frowns at his younger brother.

Anu: Try to understand Saahil, if Bhaiya goes in, he'll never come out. He'll draw attention to himself and get held up. But no one likes you on the other hand, so no one would even bother stopping you.

Saahil scowls and agrees only after receiving another grimacing look from his older brother. He scurries off. Jai turns his attention back onto Bani and takes her tiny right foot into his large hands, soothingly caressing it, after removing her shoe, with the thought of giving some sort of relief.

Jai: Does this feel better or does it just hurt even more? (inquiring)

Bani shyly nods her head, which doesn't answer his questions. Jai slowly grins at her.

Jai: Well… which one is it?

She blushes for acting so foolish and immediately speaks to answer him.

Bani: It feels better. (sheepishly replies)

Anu: Di, how'd you sprain your ankle?

Bani: I think I took a misstep once I got out from the car…

Kiran: Baby, you should look where you're going….

She advises her as she fondly runs her hand down Bani's hair…. Bani blushes hard as she senses Jai looking at her at that precise moment. From the corner of her eye she see his grin grows wider, probably most likely thinking back to her past falling incidents…. "I wasn't looking" was a justification she always made to excuse herself.

Bani: Mausi…. You may go inside if you'd like… I don't want to keep you….

Kiran: I don't mind sweetheart…. I'll stay here with you.

Bani: Really Mausi… please go. I feel bad for keeping you away from the party. In fact, I feel bad that I'm keeping you too Anu…. I'll be fine. I promise. I'll come in some time.

Kiran gives Bani a hesitant look before obliging to her request and bidding her with a kiss on her head.

Kiran: Jai, it wouldn't be a hassle for you to stay behind with her, would it?

Jai: No… no hassle Aunty. I'll take care of her. (reassuringly)

Bani feels herself tingle from his words…. Kiran smiles thankfully at him and turns to look at Anu.

Kiran: I guess we should go inside Anu….

Anu: I don't know aunty… I think I want to stay also…. (looking unsure of leaving Bani behind)

Bani: Anu…. I'll just be inside. It won't take too long. Please, go on, don't miss out on the party on my account.

Anu: …… Okay Di. I'll see you in the party. (reluctantly agreeing)

Together Jai and Bani watch Anu and Kiran leave them behind and look at one another awkwardly with small, nervous smiles. Jai switches his focus back onto her ankle and sees it grow redder than before.

Jai: Looks like you had a really nasty twist of your ankle…

Bani follows his gaze towards her ankle and sees the red swelling as well.…

Bani: (softly comments) I didn't think it was that bad…

She looks up and sees that Jai directs his gaze back onto her and wear an amused expression on his face.

Bani: Kya? (shyly)

Jai: I was just wondering… how does a girl like you manage to trip so many times?

Bani flushes which makes him smile even more from her reaction.

Bani: (shrugging, softly) Maybe I do have weak ankles like you said….

She hears him chuckle lightly from her words.

Jai: I guess you do, huh?….

Bani finds herself grower warmer and warmer by the way Jai gently caresses her ankle in a tenderly manner, secretly burning inside. Within moments they hear approaching footsteps and see Saahil running into view. He arrives at their car and hands over the pack of ice to his brother, breathlessly.

Saahil: I've got it….

Bani: (earnestly) Thank you Saahil…

Saahil: (embarrassed, slightly blushing) No problem….

Jai slowly presses the ice against her ankle and sees the cooling touch on her skin affect her as she jerks her foot away for a moment.

Bani: It's cold….

Jai: Yes, but it will help….

He rests the pack back onto her ankle and keeps her foot in place to prevent her from moving it again.

Bani: How long do you think this will take?

Jai: Probably a few minutes…. We just need for the swelling to go down.

Bani nods her head, showing that she understands. They both then turn their attention over to Saahil, who still lingers by. He stares back at them with confusion.

Saahil: What? (innocently)

Jai: I'm presuming you want to stick around for the show?

Saahil: Of course. I mean, I want to know just as much as you do if Bani's alright.

Jai: She has only twisted her ankle…. She's not dying, kid.

Saahil: (meekly) I know she's not.

Before Jai can say anything more, the three of them hear a raspy voice from behind….

"Ah… what do we have here," says a man with intrigued interest on the situation. Jai turns to see who it is and Bani watches as he suddenly becomes infuriated by the intruder. He's a tall, thin man with a growing stubble and unkempt dark brown hair. Jai glowers at him.

Jai: What do you want Mohan?

The man, Mohan, seems taken aback by Jai's unwelcoming attitude. However, he seems unthreatened as he comes only nearer. Bani unknowingly creeps closer to Jai's side, feeling strangely uncomfortable by this stranger's presence. She did not know why, but she wasn't getting a good vibe from the man. To her surprise, she also sees Saahil tensed and angry by Mohan's company.

Mohan: Why … Hello to you too, Jai. It's been quite some time since the last time we had seen each other, hasn't it?

Jai makes an unpleasant noise as a response.

Mohan: I merely came by to see if there was any problem….

Jai: (dismissive) There's no problem here that needs your assistance. Now leave.

Mohan: Come on Jai… You can't possibly be the hero as everyone makes you seem. Sometimes even the hero needs some help.

Saahil: He doesn't need help, especially from you. (remarks)

Mohan momentarily switches his gaze over to Saahil, suddenly realizing that he is there as well. Jai follows his gaze to his younger brother.

Jai: Saahil. (warningly)

Sahil grows quiet. He understands that his brother does not wanting him to talk to Mohan under any circumstances.

Mohan: Feisty one here you're raising Jai….

He comments while ruffling Saahil's hair who angrily moves his hand away. Mohan grimaces at this but diverts his notice back over to Jai who stares at him with intense despise.

Mohan: Who's the damsel in distress?

Bani shudders with the man's keen interest changing onto her. A spark triggers in Jai's eye as he sees this and protectively stands in Bani's view.

Jai: That's none of your concern, Mohan. Now take my advice and leave before I am forced to be anything but civil to you.

Mohan lifts his hands up in the air, as if he's just been confronted by the police, and lets out a throaty chuckle.

Mohan: Relax. No need to get so hyped up, Jai. I simply wanted to say hello and make a friend.

Jai: (sneers) I bet you did.

Mohan: I guess I'll take your leave then. See you around Jai and your brother….. (giving Bani a glance after looking behind Jai's shoulder) You too sweetheart. I hope to see you again as well.

Jai eyes Mohan like a hawk as he moves on away from them, going back to his own business. He looks back at a confused, yet frightened Bani. Picking up the ice pack, he proceeds in icing down her ankle.

Saahil: (getting worked up) Bhaiya, you think Mohan was invited?

Jai: He couldn't possibly be by Uncle and Aunty…. He may have been from the groom's side though.

Saahil swears under his breath. Bani looks back and forth from brother to brother.

Bani: (innocently) Would any one of you mind telling me who that man was?

Before Jai has the chance in calmly setting the topic aside, his brother beats him to the punch.

Saahil: That's Mohan Khandelwal, the town's p*rvert.

Bani's face pales as she hears this. She worriedly looks over to Jai, who understands her growing fear. He curses Saahil for scaring her.

Jai: Don't worry…. He won't try anything on you. He wouldn't dare to.

Saahil: Just make sure to stay away from him Bani. You wouldn't want to be tangled up with him. He's got a bad rep around here in town. Just this summer he got a girl pregnant and another two winters ago.

Jai: Saahil, no more. (warns in a silencing manner)

His younger brother instantly shuts up but nods at Bani, showing him that he is telling her the truth. Bani gulps hard.

Bani: Doesn't anyone here do anything about him?

Saahil: Well there's isn't much evidence that proves he's really doing anything. There are girls who complain against him, but that isn't enough as they could also easily be lying to get attention.

Jai glares at his brother for defying him.

Bani: Well what about the girls that were pregnant?

Saahil: The both of them moved out of town and refuse to say who the father is. And even if they were forced to say, they probably wouldn't give Mohan's name because they fear him.

She understands as she fears Mohan a little herself. She doesn't feel safe with him around either.

Bani: I see what you mean by evidence….

Saahil: So it's best if you keep away, unless you want to be another victim of his.

Jai: (for the third time) Saahil, that's enough. (turning to Bani) Bani, all you need to know is that you need to stay away from him. That's all. Do you understand?

Bani nods her head in confirmation, not wanting to pursue the topic any longer as she notices it clearly upsets Jai.

Jai: (changing the topic, calming down) I think you should be fine now… Try getting up and see if you can walk.

Jai helps her in lowering her down onto her feet and she attempts in walking. She looks back at him and smiles lightly at him.

Bani: It hurts, but not as much as before… It's tolerable….

Jai: You ready in going inside then?

Bani: Yes.

Saahil: Then let's get going then….

Just as Jai makes a movement to leave, Bani hesitantly holds him back by placing a hand on his shoulder. She looks at him with gratitude as he turns back at her.

Bani: (sincerely) Thank you…..

Her heart swells as he gives her a small warm smile, his one dimple showing….

Jai: Don't mention it…..

*************************************************************

"Bani, what took you so long?" Rano exclaims once she approaches Bani on seeing her make her presence at the party. Bani looks sheepishly at her best friend while Jai explains the situation to her.

Rano: Is it bad? (worriedly)

Jai: She can walk, so I'm assuming it'll be fine.

Rano: Bani, you can be really clumsy at times.

Bani shoots daggers at her friend as her cheeks become blushed. She did not want to be pointed out as a fool in front of Jai any more than she has already been. Jai, on the other hand, only grins at what Rano says.

Jai: I'll leave you two here. I am just going to check around and see how things are. Once again, congratulations on your wedding, Rano.

He kisses her affectionately on her cheek and leaves after Rano bids him with a warm smile. Rano turns her attention back onto Bani once again and excitedly takes a hold of her arms.

Rano: Ssoooo….

Bani: So?

Rano: Arre yaar, don't act naive with me. Tell me, what happened?

Bani: (confused) I sprained my ankle… you know that.

Rano: Budu, you come here after being outside with Jai Bhaiya alone and have nothing to share?

Bani's cheeks turn bright right at her friend's pointed statement and shakes her head to deny that anything happened.

Rano: (sighs) Forget it, I know you will not tell me either way. I will have to get it out of you some other time. (eyeing her)

Bani remains flushed and quiet as her friend takes her along with her onto the small stage where she expresses her best wishes to her best friend's new husband….

***************************************************************

As he sips onto his drink, his eyes fall onto her slender figure across from him in the middle of the hall. She dances with the groom on the dance floor and smiles occasionally at him as her lips move while conversing with him. He smirks at the sight of her. It's been awhile since he's seen someone as beautiful as her before around town. It is nice to finally see a new face. His attention is caught by how the lyrics slowly fade out and the melody of the music lingers for a moment before silencing as well. Being a man who believes in going after what he wants, Mohan doesn't resist any longer as he makes his way over to the center stage and towards his destination…..

************************************************************

After watching her best friend share her wedding dance with the love of her life, Bani was surprised in seeing Ranveer coming her way and extend his hand out to her. She couldn't, however, refuse a dance with a close friend, so therefore, happily obliged. Rano shared her next dance with her father instead while Bani had fun in teasing her new Jiju mercilessly. That though came to an end as she felt a light touch on her arm….

**************************************************************

Jai tries his best to remain calm, but his patient was running quite thin at the moment. He rolls his eyes as he hears the three girls bickering with one another like usual. Unfortunately, he is the bait as always. It's bad enough having to put up with Roshini's schemes at the hotel, but did God really hate him that he created two more nauseas in the form of Pia Chopra and Meera Khandelwal?

He had been innocently loitering around the bar when first approached by Pia who instantly made sure to comment on his appearance. Before he could even politely thank her, a jealous Roshini came marching along with Meera following in tow.

Feeling a headache coming along, Jai slips away silently without being noticed. It'd take them some time to realize he's gone once their bickering comes to an end. He nurses his drink in his hand and averts his attention elsewhere but something in particular catches his direct focus…. A moment later he leaves his drink behind and makes his way over to the dance floor….

**************************************************************

Turning around, Bani freezes and shivers run through her as she sees Mohan Khandelwal standing before her with a smirk on his lips. She watches as his dark eyes fly past hers and look over to her friend behind her.

Mohan: Ranveer, you wouldn't mind if I cut in, would you?

In a flash Jai's words draw on her and Bani looks back at Ranveer, pleading him with begging eyes to refuse. However, Ranveer gives Mohan a small friendly smile and says pleasantly….

Ranveer: No, of course not.

Mohan's smile widens. As Bani watches Ranveer move aside with panicked eyes and leave the dance floor, she unwillingly turns her attention to Mohan, who looks at her with gleaming eyes.

Mohan: How about sharing a dance with me beautiful? (intended flirt in his voice)

She looks on with terror as his hand comes forth to take her hands into his and before she can even register disgust or manage to respond, she sees another hand come into view and take her own instead. Her eyes follow up and lock with a pair of gray eyes. She feels relief and warmth swarm into her as Jai maintains his gaze on her while clasping their hands together, keeping their fingers entwined. He looks hard over in Mohan's direction and stares ominously at him, daring him to try and defy him. Mohan, on the other hand, steps back on seeing the intensity in Jai's eyes, knowing that he would be a fool if he were to mess with the lion's mane.

Mohan: Fine, have it your way…. (briskly)

Deciding that Bani isn't worth the trouble after all, he wanders off the stage without another word. Bani looks over to Jai with gratitude after he pulls her gently into his arms and places his hands on her waist. Slowly they proceed into the dance…

Bani: (softly murmurs) Thank you….

Jai: (smiling lightly, brushing it away) How's your ankle?

Bani: (blushing from his intent look) It hurts a little…

Jai: Well if you can dance, that sure is a good sign, don't you think?

He says with a soft twinkle in his eyes and a kind smile. Bani dumbly nods at him, continuing to turn pink. Suddenly they fall silent as they have nothing else to say and only dance in sync to the music….

Baahon ke darmiyaan do pyaar mil rahe hain
Baahon ke darmiyaan do pyaar mil rahe hain
Jaane kya bole mann dole sunke badan
Dhadkan bani zubaan

Immediately butterflies begin to roam around in the pit of her stomach. Here she is, dancing with Jai Walia, the man she possibly is falling in love with…. Her cheeks become tinged with the color pink.

Baahon ke darmiyaan do pyaar mil rahe hain
Jaane kya bole mann dole sunke badan
Dhadkan bani zubaan

Looking past Jai's shoulder, Bani catches Rano's eye, who dances with her husband nearby, and blushes brightly as her friend gives her an approving gesture and a sly wink. She hastily looks away and makes the mistake of meeting Jai's eyes which are so intense that it causes her to stare down at his chest instead….

Baahon ke darmiyaan do pyaar mil rahe hain
Jaane kya bole mann dole sunke badan
Dhadkan bani zubaan
Baahon ke darmiyaan

Aasmaan ko bhi ye haseen raaz hai pasand
Aasmaan ko bhi ye haseen raaz hai pasand
Uljhi uljhi saanson ki aawaaz hai pasand
Moti luta rahi hai saawan ki badliyaan

Baahon ke darmiyaan do pyaar mil rahe hain
Baahon ke darmiyaan do pyaar mil rahe hain
Jaane kya bole mann dole sunke badan
Dhadkan bani zubaan
Baahon ke darmiyaan ….

As they draw apart, their eyes clash and they hold one another's gaze for a stilling moment until Mr. Oberoi steps in politely asking Bani for a dance. She sweetly accepts and shyly bids Jai before joining her Ranvijay uncle. Jai gives a small polite smile as a reply and steps back allowing them to proceed on…. His gaze however remains on Bani's form and he finds a whirlpool of thoughts overcome him all over again…

Give it a chance…

Chapter 7:

Bani sighs as she arrives at her desired spot and uses her hand to shield her eyes when looking around. Smiling in approval, she unfolds her stool and places it down onto the grass and sets up her stand which moments later she places her sketching pad onto. She takes a good couple of minutes to take in her surroundings and breathe in the fresh air while enjoying being soaked under the warm sun's rays before setting to her task. Immediately she takes a grip of her pencil and begins in stroking the tip against the blank sheet of paper'.

It has only been a week since Rano's wedding and already Bani finds herself alone. Nothing felt the same without her friend's presence. She had even dropped her morning art classes'. It just didn't feel right without Rano's company. She missed their meetings and never ending phone calls. Like how her Kiran Mausi puts it, she is having a case of the blues. Despite her slight depression, she is genuinely happy for her best friend who has the love of her life by her side. Ranveer is a wonderful man and he will keep her very happy, she is sure of it.

Bani feels her body come to an ease and her shoulders relax from its previous tense form. It had something to do with the particular area. She had come across it by accident on one of her small walks around the town and instantly fell in love with it. It's an open isolated place with the view of a lake, thriving green grass, and a spring like atmosphere to it with its blooming plants. And she had it all to herself' From the moment she set her eyes onto it she could already imagine herself setting to work and felt that she could reach her creative peak with the inspiration presiding within the aura. Which explains why she has brought her work along with her and focusing her mind to it'... This is why she left Mumbai in the first place'.... She needed to find peace.

Taking in another inhale of the refreshing air, Bani feels energized and excitedly moves her hand across the pad in an act of frenzy'.

************************************************************

He is often referred to as the town's superman. He is well aware of this, yet, he could care less for the title. Jai was born and raised in this town, he knows everyone just as well as they know him. He shares close ties to them as long as a deep connection to his hometown. So he is willing to do anything for his dear ones, the same ones he has known his whole life.

At the moment he is helping Ramu Chacha, whom he lovingly addresses, by cutting his wood on his personal land that he runs and takes care for himself. But Chacha is growing old and does not possess the same amount of strength he once had in his youth. His only son has gone out to the city to make something of himself, leaving his old aged father behind who had once dreamed ages back of continuing to take care of his land with the help of his son by his side. Though, now, he places that dream on Jai who had stepped into his son's place, bringing in a new ray of hope.

Jai grunts as he continuously without a moment of break swings the axe back and forth, chopping the long stacks of lumber into small pieces. He sweats profusely and wipes his brow as he digs the axe into the ground and takes a small pause in which he stretches his tensed muscles.

"Arre Beta, you have worked so hard nonstop' ... Here, I have brought water' ," Raman Gupta exclaims as he comes out from his house with a jug and glass in hand. He pours the chilled water into the glass and extends it over to Jai who takes it from him gratefully. He downs the liquid down within seconds. Setting the glass aside, he grins.

Jai: Thanks Chacha'
Raman: Koi baath nahi beta' Aab main wapas aaya hoon' Hum saath saath kaam karloonge' Chalo' (trans: No worries, son' Now I am here' Together we will work' Come')

Raman had some matters to take care of, cutting into his working alongside with Jai as he refuses to allow Jai to do all the work alone. Besides, he enjoys manual labor. The self-satisfaction of working hard is priceless. He had also always envisioned having his son work by his side, but now Jai has taken up that role and he wants to enjoy the feeling to the fullest. Just as he goes to pick up his own axe, he is surprised as he sees Jai's hand take a hold of it himself.

Raman: Jai?

Jai: Chacha, it's alright' I can do it' You just go on inside and rest. I am well aware of your back problem these days' You work yourself too hard. You will pull something else if you continue to do so. Take some rest, please.

Raman: (blowing him off) Nonsense, I am perfectly able to work. Now hand over the axe son.

Jai: (glowering in his face) I am just as stubborn as you are Chacha and I won't give you the axe. Go on and relax' I will tell Jhumki to make you some tea. In the meanwhile, don't worry about the work' Main hoon na?

Before Raman can even protest in despair, he is cut off as Jai beckons for his daughter.

Jai: Jhumki!... 'Oye, Jhumki!

Soon they hear the rustling of a pair of feet and Jhumki appears by the open front screen door, breathless.

Jhumki: Ji Bhaiya?

Jai: Tumhare Babuji liye chaai bhanwao' phir zaroor dekhna ke unko aaraam miljaaye' Teek hai? (trans: Make some tea for your father' then make sure to see he gets some rest' Alright?)

Jhumki nods understandingly and walks over to her father, gently taking a grip on his arm.

Jhumki: Chaaliye Babuji' Aap araam kariye' Main aap keliye chaai banwaati hoon' (trans: Come along father' You rest' I will make tea for you.)

Raman: (calmly explaining) Ek minute Jhumki beti' Chorde mujhe' Jai, yeh kya hai beta? Yeh zidd kyon? Main kaehraha hoon na? Mujhe kuch nahi hua' Main bilkul teek hoon' Waise bhi, mujhe yeh kaam kaarne ke adaat parchuka hai' Tum chinta kyon kaarte ho? ' Aab iss umar mein bhi kaam karnliye zaroort hai' Mere paas to mera beta to nahi hai, haina? Woh to dhoor chalegya' sher se kaamanilye' Mere liye aur kuch to hai nahi hai karnliye yahan' kaam to bus hi hai' (trans: One moment Chumki... Let go' Jai, what is this son? Why this stubbornness? I am telling you, na, nothing is wrong with me' I am perfectly fine' Besides, I am used to working' Why do you worry? Now in this age I must work' I do not have my son with me, right? He has gone far away' to make money from the city' I have nothing else to do here' there is only work.)
Jai: (reflecting a hint of hurt) Chacha, aap yeh kaise kehsaakte? Main hoon na aapke paas' Main bhi aapka beta hoon' haina? Aap yeh kaise baatein kaehrahe hai? '. Aapse yeh saab sunke mujhe nahi aacha laagta' (trans: Chachu, how can you say this? I am with you' I am also your son, aren't I? How can you say all this?... I don't like hearing this from you')

Raman realizes his mistake and immediately takes back what he says. After all, what more can he ask for than what he already has? He now has another son whom he can be proud of. He stares at Jai with fatherly affection and feels warmth surface inside of him for this newly acquired son of his. He places a firm hand on Jai's shoulder.

Raman: Tum mera beta ho, Jai' Mera saabse accha beta' aur main tujhpar baut gaarv hoon.. Kabhie maat sochna ke tum mere kahin nahi laagte ho' Sunna tumne? (scolding lightly) (trans: You are my son, Jai' My very good son' and I am very proud of you' Don't ever think you are nothing to me'. You hear?)
Jai: (slowly smiling) Sunliya' Aab aap baatiye aur araam kariye' aapka beta saab sambalonga' (trans: I hear'. Now sit and take rest' Your son will take care of everything')

Raman gives him a pat on his shoulder and nods his head along with a warm smile. He gives him a fleeting looking before following his daughter inside. Jai smiles on after him and turns back to his task and presumes into his previous working mode. Five minutes later he gets irritated by the sudden blinding from the sunbeams and looks up to face the view of the lake nearby. He is momentarily sidetracked as he gently places the axe down and gazes at the gleaming water. One of the great things he loves about Ramu Chacha's land is that it is surrounded by a very soothing atmosphere. He liked to come here and clear his head while at work. It was the only time he spent not thinking about money issues and dealing with concerns regarding his siblings. He could forget it all'.

A sudden glimpse of something nearby captures his attention and distracts him. It takes him a good few seconds to make out what it is and he feels a wave of rushing emotions arise inside of him. Unknowingly, a small smile reaches his lips and he drops his axe from his hands. He didn't know what made him do it, it was like his feet had a mind of its own' but out of nowhere, he finds himself drawn to the sight like a bee stuck to honey'.

There she is, sitting idly to herself, unaware of her surroundings and completely oblivious to his approaching form'. He smiles on the thought. He can't help but notice how breathtakingly beautiful she seems, even from behind. She wears a flattering cotton white dress with thin straps that hugs her slender frame to the tee. Her silky black long hair is let loose and rests against her back. The wear suits the weather which is surprisingly rather warm compared to their previous experience with the chill making its way into the town.
A surge of desire runs through his body as he sees the creamy exposure of her long fair legs. He combs his fingers through his hair from the slight frustrating craze building in him. God, no wonder he can't keep himself away, he muses thoughtfully'. Yet grins in the meanwhile'.

***************************************************************

Bani places her pencil down momentarily as she lifts her arms high up in the air and stretches from her uncomfortable sitting posture. As she rests her folded arms on top of her head, admiring her developing art work with an approving smile, she suddenly sees a shadow overcast the drawing and feels a tingle shoot down her back. With her heart in her throat, she turns around instantly and softly gasps in mere awe at the unexpected surprise'

Right in front of her is Jai Walia who stands gallantly tall, hovering over her sitting position, and glowing under the sun. His bronze skin seems even more enticing than usual and his handsome features are highlighted from the sunrays cast upon his form. For a moment he looks almost heavenly. Her heart leaps a thousand feet and a blush creeps into her cheeks by his appearance.

Before she can even muster a single word, he speaks in his usual charming voice'.

Jai: That's quite a picture you've drawn there, Bani'.

Bani follows his gray eyes over to her sketching pad and blushes in pleasure. She silently watches as he comes closer and peers at it, gently brushing his fingers along the drawing.

Jai: (genuinely impressed) You're a really amazing artist'. Your drawing is so realistic'.

Not knowing what else to say, she murmurs a soft thank you and continues to turn pink. A moment later Jai steps back and looks over to her once more. He gives her a friendly smile.

Jai: I saw you working over here' Thought I'd come by and see what it was you were doing.

Bani: (self-conscious, softly) I thought I was alone'.

Jai: (giving a soft chuckle) You were... I just happened to be nearby and spotted you... And I'm glad I did' otherwise I would have missed seeing what talent you possess'.

Bani: (embarrassed) ' It-it's nothing really' Just a stupid little drawing'

Jai: (raises a brow, amused) Stupid? No, it's nowhere near that.... I think it's amazing. (ending sincerely)

Bani can't help but beam a little at his compliment and shyly turns away, tearing her eyes from his. She nervously tucks a strand of hair behind her ear. From the corner of her eye, though, she finally catches the perspiration on his body and wonders what he had been doing around the area in the first place'

Just as Bani opens her mouth to ask this, Jai instead chooses to strike up their conversation'.

Jai: (intrigued) ' Bani, why is it that you are here alone in the first place? This is quite far away from your mausi's home'.

Bani looks at him wide-eye for a moment and then begins to stammer while replying to him'.

Bani: W-well I-I'. I don't really know' something about this place' j-just draws me to it'.(admitting sheepishly)

She sees him grin once more and his eyes briefly take in their surroundings before they switch back onto her.

Jai: You're right' It's very soothing' I'm surprised you managed to find it'... Not many people come here' Actually, no one does really'

Bani: (shyly) '. Then why is it that you are here?

Jai: '. (continuing to smile) I have an uncle who lives right along here' I thought I'd come by and help him out with working his land' I've finished most of it, though. Not much is left to be done'....

His voice trails off as he looks on over the fields to his chacha's land. Bani senses a silence building between them and begins to grow rather awkward around his presence. She twists her fingers together, thinking of something to say, but feeling a sprinkle of mist around her and drops fall onto her head, she gazes up at the sky and notes the graying of the clouds that previously had not been there. Jai follows in pursuit as he feels the slow drops as well. Then to their utter surprise, within seconds, pouring rain falls down hard from the sky, immediately drenching them. He swears under his breath and Bani jumps off from her seat and hastily tries to save her work after a blank moment.

Jai watches her collect her pad and attempt to close the stand but stops her from doing so as he notes that her sketches will be soaked with water under a minute or so if she doesn't get a move on.

Jai: Leave it'... it's not important.

Bani stares up at Jai and is dazed as he takes a grip of her hand and gestures for her to follow him with a single nod of his head. Breathless, she matches his fast pace and they hurriedly make their way across the grass fields. Thunder soon follows after as they are halfway by and nearly dripping wet.

Bani: Where are we going?

She manages to ask while keeping up with his fast strides. Despite being soaked under the rain, she can't help but be aware of how his fingers are closely entwined with hers. He casts a back glance and ushers, "My truck's right by the side over here' it'll keep us dry."

She allows him to lead her there and feels relief as they approach the vehicle and he opens the car door for her, allowing her in. As she safely sits into the front seat, she pants while watching him run around the front of the car and join her in the seat next to her. He runs his fingers through his wet hair and sighs before giving her a tiny smile.

Jai: (slight laugh) We're completely soaked from head to toe.'

She notices this as well and unexpectedly joins his small laughter by giving into her forming giggles and soon enough they are both chuckling at their own appearances. It dies down after a few passing moments and Jai's eyes rest on Bani's form which she becomes aware of and colors. He clears his throat roughly and then asks'.

Jai: Would you like me to take you to your home? ' You can't possibly walk back there now that it's raining.'
Bani: (meeting his soft tone) I would like that very much' thank you.

She watches him nod in acknowledgment and turn his key, starting the engine'..

************************************************************

They reached her home in ten minutes and as she stepped out of the car, she hastily turned around and abruptly asked'.

Bani: (breathlessly) Would you like to come inside?

Hesitation forms on Jai's face from her offer. He then notes it's still raining fast and Bani is becoming drenched all over again.

Jai: Thanks, but it's alright. I think I'll go on home.

Bani's insides sink in disappointment yet she finds herself pressing on the matter instead of respecting his answer.

Bani: (sweetly) ' I would really like it if you did'. It's the least I could do for your favor of driving me home' Please say you'll come in'

Again Jai stalls, considering her offer and to his surprise, he ends up in caving to her.

Jai: (grinning lightly) Sure' Let me just park my car'.

*********************************************************

Jai: Kiran Aunty's not home?

He inquiries as he looks around the house on entering it. Bani realizes that she is alone with Jai and flushes at the thought. Growing self-conscious she stutters, "I-I g-guess soo's-she must have g-gone out somewhere'" Jai simply nods his head and proceeds on in after Bani. She leads him into the living room and politely offers for him to sit down. As she watches him take a seat, she wrings her hands together. Needing to put her things away in her room, yet not wanting to be a terrible host and leave him all to himself downstairs, she unsurely asks '

Bani: Um' Do you mind if I put my stuff away in my room? It won't take too long' I just need to take care of a few things'

Jai: (coolly) No, I don't mind.

He watches her leave after a hesitant pause and hears her feet climb the flight of stairs. Slowly he can rarely hear her movements anymore and quietly looks around the room with nothing to do. He lets out a sigh and makes himself more comfortable on the couch. For a couple of minutes Jai waits patiently, but he finds himself become restless from the silence around him and wonders what is taking her so long. He sits up from the couch and treads on over to the stairs'.

As he approaches the slightly open door on the far left, he takes a grip on the doorknob and pushes it farther open. He looks around, taking it in. It's a comfortable sized room with delicate yellow walls and nice white drapes with a poster bed in the center middle. He locates Bani standing in the middle of her room, rambling through some of her stuff. His eyes leave her and he catches many pieces of her work either tacked to her board wall or laying around just about anywhere. Interested, Jai peers through her stuff as she walks further in and goes through her things, scattering through them. She opens her pad and tears a few of the pages off and keeps them securely in a separate folder.

Jai: You paint as well?

He questions as he finds a few of paintings left carelessly about. His eyes scan across them. Bani jumps a little from his voice and turns around, staring at him with surprise.

Bani: (apologetic) Oh, I'm so sorry' I didn't realize I was taking so long.... Um, er, Yes. I do just about anything... I guess you could call me an art freak' (giving him a cute small smile)

Jai returns it and turns his attention back to her work. He finds one folder hidden beneath the clutter of papers and reaches for it, curious with the contents within it. Bani places her separate folder away in one of her drawers and looks over to Jai to draw his attention after she places her sketching pad onto the table to dry, but her whole being freezes on what she sees.

Her eyes stay locked tensely on Jai as he has a certain folder of hers sprawled out in his hands that he intently looks into and goes through every page in it. Her heart skips a beat from fright. Shocked, worried, and apprehensive, Bani rushes to his side and immediately takes it out of his hands. Jai, instead of showing offense to her action, simply gazes at her in a completely different way... as if he is looking at her for the very first time.

Her own face flushes from embarrassment and she feels the want to burst into tears from it. How could she have been so careless? Why hadn't she been paying attention? Now it's over... He knows... He knows and there's no way she can deny it now. 'He's seen the evidence... He had seen them all... the sketches she drew of him... the very ones she spent hours working on, getting them just right. And now he's seen them all!

She rattles through her mind quickly to say something, anything. Just to make him stop looking at her so intensely as he is now. Immediately she begins to babble and can feel her brink down to the point of crying'

Bani: I'm so sorry' I-I shouldn't have---I really apologize' It was stupid of me' I should have asked you---It wasn't right and I know it was wrong. 'I couldn't help myself though' B-but I know that's inexcusable---Please, please forgive me if you can---I-I won't do it ever again without asking you---T-that's what I should have done from the very start---but I didn't---and I'm---

Jai looks on at Bani rambling on, seeming so guilty as if she has committed the world's most biggest crime, but all he can focus on at the moment' is how unbelievably beautifully she really is. Her black hair is soaking wet in curls and kisses both sides of her cheeks... her wet eyelashes stand out more than usual... her hazel brown eyes appear darker... a lovely shade of red adorns her flushed cheeks.. and her curvy, shaped mouth seems to beckon for him. His heart begins to swell and thuds hard as he takes a second to collect his thoughts... Give it a chance'.... The same old words come back to haunt him.

His eyes lower back to the folder gripped tightly in her hands and fly back up to Bani's crumbling face'...

Suddenly out of nowhere his feet take a few slow steps forward, as they had done before earlier in the day with a mind of its own, and he keeps his gaze firmly set onto Bani'... He stands right in front of her, only inches away from her face'.

Bani: I'm sorry... 'I can't believe I did it... I needed your permission first... 'but still I went ahead and'...

Bani is taken by surprise as Jai comes closer and takes her own lips with his, shutting her in the middle of her nonstop rattling. She is stunned at first but slowly responds, kissing him back with the same mix of passion. She lets out a startled breath as he draws his lips away and stares at him with softening eyes. He takes a hold of her chin in his fingers and meets her direct gaze, looking into her eyes so deeply that it felt as if he were peering right into her soul.

Jai: (murmurs) You apologize too much.

Bani blinks dumbly up at him by his words and Jai has to bite back a grin. He closes in on their distance, kissing her again with more fervor than the last. One of his hands makes its way to her waist, pulling her close, as the other tenderly cups her cheek. She then feels herself loosen and move her own hands around, feeling his chest and the ridges of muscle beneath his wet shirt. To what seems like a century to Bani, who is dizzy with excitement, Jai slowly caresses her lips just before letting them go'.

He looks on at her, quite breathless himself, and a building smile twitches on the corners of his mouth.

Jai: Would you think of me as crazy'....if I were to tell you that...'I think I'm falling in love with you?

She couldn't believe her ears. She looks on at him, stunned, for a moment before it finally registers and a quick surge of happiness hits her that makes her slightly light headed. Tears wet her eyes as she rapidly replies'.

Bani: No!... I-I mean' (turning pink) no'.... In fact...'I-I would tell you that'.... (coloring even more) that I feel the same about you' (ending with a whisper)

Grinning at her reply and overcome with a new, unknown happiness of his own, Jai's mouth meet hers once more in a firm, sweet kiss'...

**************************************************************

Bani opens the front door with a pink face and Kiran stares suspiciously at her niece while coming in.

Kiran: Hi Bani beti' How was your day?

She watches with amusement as Bani's cheeks grow even pinker. She looks closely and is slightly amazed to see a change in Bani' Her eyes are sparkling like never before and she can't seem to get rid of the silly grin off of her face.

Bani: (softly) It was alright, mausi' How was yours?

Kiran hangs her coat and turns to look back at her.

Kiran: It was fine' not really different from any other day' But I will tell you this...'Oh, Jai? I didn't even see you there, beta'

Kiran looks as Jai emerges from behind Bani and strangely seems awkward as he joins them at the door. He runs his fingers through his wet looking hair and gives her a sheepish smile'

Jai: (murmurs) Hi Aunty'

From the corner of her eye, Kiran sees how her niece's whole face turns bright red by Jai's arrival. Bani shyly tucks her hair behind her ear and lowers her eyes down to the ground.

Kiran: What a pleasant surprise' I wasn't expecting you' When did you get here?
Jai: Just fifteen minutes ago Aunty...' I came to drop off Bani.
Kiran: (surprised) Drop off Bani?
Jai: Er' I bumped into her near Ramu Chacha's place. It started to rain and she had no way of getting home so I offered to take her.
Kiran: (turning to Bani) But what were you doing near Raman Gupta's house?
Bani: (sheepishly) Woh' I was painting near his house' There is a very nice view there. (ending meekly)
Kiran: (giving her an admonishingly look) I wish you would have told me...' I was under the impression that you were going back to your class' --Anyways, thank you beta' If it weren't for you, Bani may have had to walk home in the rain.
Jai: (modestly) Don't mention it Aunty'

She looks on at him and smiles her old motherly smile. She tenderly places a hand on his arm and gestures for him to come back inside'

Kiran: Come' sit down. I'll make you some warm tea. You must be cold from the rain.

Jai: (returning her smile) I'd love to, but I'm afraid I should get going' I'm expecting some company in some time and need to get back. Besides, I'd really love to change out of these clothes.

Kiran: Company? Who is coming over? Jai: Tarun and Lakshmi mentioned that they are visiting town for a day and wanted to come by the house for lunch or some sort.
Kiran: But only for a day?
Jai: (shrugs lightly) Tarun's busy with his work. He couldn't afford to keep away for anymore time. And Lakshmi has been requesting that they go and visit her family for a long time now. Tarun just couldn't take any day off then.
Kiran: (smiling understandingly) Send them my love. And that if they have any spare time, to swing on by over here for a visit.
Jai: Will do.

Jai responds by placing his own hand over hers and giving it a comforting, farewell squeeze.

Jai: I'll see you later, Aunty.
Kiran: Take care, beta.

Letting go of her hand, Jai gives her a last smile before walking towards the front door and withdrawing his set of keys from his jean pocket. Just as he opens the door, he glances back and finds Bani creeping behind Kiran's shoulder and looking at him with quiet eyes. He gives her a secret smile and leaves with a soft chuckle after witnessing the change of color on her face'....

**************************************************************

Once he arrived back home, he took a quick shower and dressed into a fresh set of clothes. Just as he was wiping his hair with his towel, he hears the doorbell ring and his sister announcing chirpily, "Bhaiya, they're here!" Throwing his towel off to the side, Jai walks out from his bedroom and steps into the living room just in time to see Anu open the door, revealing his best friend and wife standing with pleasant smiles etched onto their faces.

Anu: (exclaiming) Tarun Bhaiya'...Lakshmi Bhabhi!

She engulfs them into warm welcoming hugs and chats happily with them in the process. Jai catches Tarun's eye and smiles at his friend while slowly approaching him at the door.

Tarun: My dost, will you even come and give your friend a hug or continue to stare at me?
Jai: I don't know'...I'm still quite upset with you for delaying your visit for so long.
Tarun: Arre yaar, business is business. Who knows this well more than you?
Lakshmi: (cutting in) Oh don't give him your business excuse. It won't work on him either. Don't you worry Jai, you have every right to be mad with him. I know I am.

Jai grins at his best friend's wife and happily takes her into a hug as she comes to him with all smiles.

Lakshmi: You look horrible'

She comments while taking a good look at him. Jai frowns.

Jai: Why thank you' That is exactly what every man wants to hear.
Lakshmi: (grinning) No, not like that. Of course you are devilishly handsome like always. You look tired though'. As if you haven't slept in a while.
Tarun: Well of course he hasn't' The man hasn't slept in a hundred years.
Jai: Come on now' Let's not get into this. Not in front of Anu at least.
Anu: Kyon Bhaiya? I mean, it is true'. (also comments)

Tarun laughs as he takes Jai's sister into a side hug.

Tarun: See, even your little bachoos notice. Speaking of which, where is Saahil?
Lakshmi: Well if we settle in then we might see him.
Jai: Well, if I choose to let your husband in.

Lakshmi stifles her laughter at the expression on her husband's face. Tarun gives Jai a "come-on" look.

Tarun: Your friend comes especially to meet you all the way from Mumbai and this is how you treat him?

Jai: I am only treating him the way he should be treated'.
Tarun: Oh, it's not my fault that I've been busy'. I'm telling you na, the business'

Lakshmi and Anu both watch as the two old friends bicker back and forth and before they can get any further into it, Lakshmi takes them both by their arms'cutting into their light tiff.

Lakshmi: Oh come on you two'. Quit fighting and save that until we get inside'.

***********************************************************

Jai watches from a distance as his siblings gush over their new presents given by Tarun and Lakshmi from Mumbai, momentarily drifting away from his friends' conversation with him. Until he is jolted back into reality as Tarun says'

Tarun: Which is why I'm suggesting'. That you should move.
Jai: (startled) What?
Tarun: (grim) You heard me' Come to Mumbai. There are so many opportunities for you there, Jai. You can't live here in Mount Abu forever. Not when you have so much potential. I know you dost'. You're absolutely brilliant. And you can't waste that talent of yours just by working as a hotel manager.
Jai: What's wrong with being a hotel manager? (defensive)
Tarun: (calmly) Nothing's wrong with it. It's just not what you are. Because you are worth so much more, my friend. That's why I'm saying' Mumbai is the place for you to see just that. There are so many offers there for you Jai. So many chances to make something of yourself. In fact, I know businesses that are hiring and can easily get you started right away. '. Just say yes.

Jai switches his gaze over to Lakshmi who only nods her head in agreement.

Lakshmi: Please say you will come Jai'. It is the best thing for you along as Anu and Saahil. This is your chance to give yourself and them more in life. You three have suffered from too much' ....Especially you. This is your time of happiness' And you can't get that if you remain in the very hometown that keeps you bounded down.
Tarun: (agreeing) Exactly!

Jai takes this offer into consideration unlike the other times he took it so lightly. They made a good point. If Jai were to go to Mumbai, he could manage to find a better job and higher pay. And he knew he had the capabilities to excel. He was a hard worker and was well aware of it.

Suddenly a wave of thoughts hit Jai all at once. His childhood in the town'. The loss of his parents. His Mausi'. Raising his siblings' Kiran Aunty'. Ramu Chacha' Obreoi Uncle' There are too many attachments here. He can't just walk up and leave. It's too difficult. And nowhere as simple as Tarun was making it seem. He senses his friends' eyes on him and takes a pausing moment to finalize his decision'

Jai: (firm tone) '. I won't leave.

Tarun stares at his friend with shock whereas Lakshmi seems unmoved as well as unsurprised by his answer.

Tarun: What? Jai, did you not hear a single word that came out of my mouth? Did you not catch on how moving to Mumbai can benefit you and your family?

Jai: Tarun' It's not as simple as you are making it seem' Say that I do move to Mumbai with Saahil and Anu' It may be the city of opportunity, but there are no guarantees'. How can I be so sure that I will get a better job? What if I get a job similar to the one I have now? Then what would the use be if I could have just stayed here the whole time with my loved ones instead of having to move to a strange city and be working exactly the same?
Tarun: But---
Jai: And it's not just that, Tarun' It's the fact that there are so many attachments to this town'. So many memories' I don't think I can just get up and leave it all behind. I have good memories of my parents here' good memories of raising Saahil and Anu'. I'm not ready to leave all that'. And it's not only me, it's Saahil and Anu as well' I don't want to separate them from the life they have here in Mount Abu' the life we managed to create together. I can't just rip them away from their home and force them into a new environment. That would be selfish of me to do. They are familiar with this town and I don't want to make them uncomfortable in anyway'.
Tarun: (exasperated) But Jai, if you would just listen to what I have to'

Tarun's voice trails off midway as he feels a hand on his shoulder and receives a silencing look from his wife. She slowly nods her head once, telling him to say no more. He simmers down and sits back into his previous seat. Lakshmi looks over to Jai, who stares back at her with his set determination'

Lakshmi: Are you sure that is what you want for you and your siblings, Jai? To stay here' in this town? (softly inquires)

Jai nods his head in agreement after a short pause. Lakshmi gazes at him for a silent moment before replying politely'

Lakshmi: If that is what you want'
Jai: (firm) It is what I want'..

She simply nods her head, showing him she understands. His sibling's laughter draws his attention back onto them and he watches quietly as they tease and bully one another' A soft smile plays on his lips and he feels the reassuring satisfaction that he is doing the right thing'..

**************************************************************

Bani pays the rickshaw driver and watches him zoom off down the street and out of sight before turning her attention to the house before her. She gazes at it with the same admiration from before and begins to walk up the black driveway'.

Two full days had passed by and she hadn't heard a word from Jai since. He had told her that he would call when over her house, but she received none. She got tired of waiting and decided that she would take the matter into her own hands. She would come and see him personally.

Just as she knocks on his front door, she begins to feel panic surface within her and her courage vanish. She had mentally prepared for herself to meet him but now it all proved to be futile. She wasn't ready to face him after what happened'

She doesn't have the opportunity to run and flee because to her dismay the door actually opens and she sees Anu appear in front of her with a surprised, yet delighted look on her face.

Anu: Di, aap yahan?!

Bani licks her dry lips and answers nervously'.

Bani: Hain' woh'. I came to see you.

And oh yeah, her excuse for coming was to visit Anu. At least, that was what she was going to say to Jai's siblings at least.

Anu: What a surprise! I'm so glad you came! Come in!

Anu hurriedly ushers Bani into the house and like a good host, settles her down immediately onto one of the living room couches. She stares at her with a bright smile.

Anu: I'm really happy you're here Di, I've been so bored lately. I need the company.

The moment she had stepped into the house, Bani had been warily looking around the house for any sight of the image of her thoughts. She looks away, disappointed, and turns her full attention back onto Anu.

Bani: (small smile) ' I was quite bored myself. So I thought of dropping by'. (adds nervously) ' Is no one else here?'Are you home alone?
Anu: (sadly) Yes'. Bhaiya has work like he always does and Saahil went out to spend some time with his friends. But of course bhai has no clue about Saahil's whereabouts' He is probably assuming he is staying home with me.

Of course, the hotel. Why hadn't she thought of that before? She hears that all Jai ever does is work. Sympathetically Bani places her own hand over Anu's and gives her an uplifting smile.

Bani: (sweetly) Don't worry Anu' main hoon na? You and me will have a lot of fun together'.
Anu: But Di, what will we do? (curiously)
Bani: (pauses for a still moment before carrying on with confidence in her voice) I was thinking that we could go out somewhere to eat'. That is always a fun idea' (her smile grows) And I know just the place'. ....

****************************************************************

Jai had just finished explaining pending information to a new hired worker at the front desk so that he fully understands the system run in the hotel when suddenly he heard a familiar voice call for him from a distance. He slowly halts and stills in his steps before turning curiously behind him and receiving a rather unexpected surprise. He sees his sister running excitedly to him and within seconds throws her arms around him. He steadies her and places a comforting hand on her back when he glances up and is further surprised to see Bani present as well' slowly arriving to join them. His insides lurch on the sight of her and he then realizes how much he really has missed seeing her the past two days'. She looks lovely as always wearing dark fitting jeans paired with a flattering black long sleeved top. Her hair as usual is kept out but he sees a difference as it is slightly curled.

Anu: Bhaiya, look...'I am here!

Jai switches his attention onto his baby sister even though his mind was currently floating with thoughts of someone else at the moment'

Jai: (lightly chuckles at her excitement) I can see that Princess'. But why is it that you are here?

Jai then senses Bani's presence as she finally joins them at the front counter. He gives her a side glance and receives a blush as well as a soft, shy smile.

Anu: Oh, it was actually really sudden! Bani Di dropped by the house and offered to take me out to lunch. I was going to call and let you know about the plan but she said that we could just have lunch here in your hotel's restaurant and surprise you at the same time. (smiling)

Amused on hearing this, Jai gives Bani another look and conceals a smile on seeing her cheeks grow bright pink from embarrassment. He will, he knew at that moment, never grow tired of seeing her blush like this.

Anu: So now we're here! I surprised you, didn't I Bhaiya? (giggles in a pleased manner)
Jai: (grinning) You sure did'.
Anu: Oh Bhai, this is so great! I've never really seen you work around here before! But now I finally get to!

Jai looks around the front hall of the hotel in a rather paranoid manner and sees that he is being given strange stares from the people around. He decides that speaking to his sister out like this in the hotel is very unprofessional and that they should go somewhere else to talk in private.

Jai: Anu, let's go into my office and talk. We will get some privacy in there. (turning to Bani, acknowledging her) Bani'.

Bani nods her head, showing him she agrees and follows after him as he takes his sister's arm into his hold and leads her further into the back of the hotel to his office'.

***************************************************************

"Wow Bhai, your office is amazing!" Anu shrieks in delight as she takes in the appearance of her older brother's office. Bani stares on at her, confused. She wonders why Anu had never seen Jai's workplace before but then concludes that Jai is probably closed about his work life. She avoids looking at Jai's eyes as she walks further into the room. From behind her he hears him close the door shut. They stayed for a couple of minutes which Anu spent chatting throughout until she excused herself in order to go to the restroom'.

Anu: Di, I'll just go on over to the restroom and be right back'. Or' actually' maybe I'll just meet you in the restaurant and we can start having lunch' (suggests)

Bani becomes flushed as she feels Jai's gaze on her and she nervously replies'

Bani: Th-that sounds great Anu' I-I'll meet you then'
Anu: Great! 'Bye Bhai!

She kisses him sweetly on his cheek and Jai smiled at her in return. Together Jai and Bani watched Anu disappear behind the door, leaving them alone to themselves' Bani lightly runs her fingers along objects on his desks in the meantime avoiding meeting his gaze. She didn't know why she was feeling so nervous now. Wasn't this what she had wanted? For them to be alone? She licks her dry lips while keeping her head bowed and begins in saying'

Bani: (softly) I hope'. I hope you don't mind us coming here'.. I had just thought that..

Her voice trails off as she feels her chin being lifted and firm lips cover her own'. She melts as a pair of arms circle around her waist and hold her close'. She feverishly kisses him back as her hands go up to his thick hair and roam her fingers through them' Bani dazedly stared up at him as he pulls back moments later and looked at her intensely with his gray eyes.

Jai: I've missed you'

He says to her gently. All of her nerves and worries seem to vanish on hearing these words. She slowly raises her hand to his face and lightly brushes the tips of her fingers against his cheek'.

Bani: (breathlessly) '. You never called... I thought'...I was beginning to think that you'
Jai caressingly runs his fingers through her long tresses while replying, "No, nothing like that'...No doubts... I just got caught up with work'... I wanted to call but never got around to doing it'.... I'm sorry."

He watches Bani nod her head understandingly and lower her eyes'. He takes a hold of her chin and pushes it up once more.

Jai: Bani, I want you to know that what I said to you the other day'. ...I mean it.

He professes, wanting to clear any lingering doubts in her mind. He sees her face glow while her cheeks become a rosy red. She gives him his favorite shy smile of hers.

Bani: (softly) I know'... I just'... I just wanted to make sure'. I was worried'. So I'...
Jai: came here to meet me and see where things stand'. (finishes for her)

Again Bani nods her head. He lightly grins at her and secures his hold around her.

Jai: '..I have never been so sure about anything before than what I feel for you Bani'.

She blushes bright red and shyly fiddles with the button of his coat, her hair falling and covering half of her face like a curtain. Jai tenderly pushes it back and directly meets her eyes once more. He lowers down and kisses her, his desire clear with the way he ravishes her lips. A couple of minutes later Bani withdrew by pushing him gently back. He softly groaned in protest before taking her back in his arms and claiming her lips again. She kissed him back with the equal enthusiasm until she remembered that she should really leave'.... Again she pushed him back'.

Bani: I should go'. Anu must be waiting'
Jai: (hoarse from desire) Tell her that you went to the restroom'.
Bani: But she just came from there...'it wouldn't make sense.
Jai: Come up with some excuse' She's a very gullible kid.
Bani: (lightly giggling) Jai'. I really need to go'

He presses a last kiss onto her lips before pulling away and leaning his forehead against hers'

Jai: I'll call you' I promise.
Bani: (grinning gently) You'll keep to your word this time?'.
Jai: (chuckling) I will, don't worry'. Now go' Anu's waiting'
Bani: Wait' I want to ask you something'
Jai: (sweetly) Anything'
Bani: (blushing) '. I wanted to take Anu out somewhere'. I was thinking we could go shopping together' Could I? (hopeful)

Instead of pondering over this suggestion of hers like how Bani had expected him to do, she was slightly taken aback on seeing him smile handsomely at her and answer'.

Jai: Okay'
Bani: (dumbfound) ' Really?
Jai: (shrugs) I don't see any problem in it' Go ahead and have fun'.
Bani: '. You trust me?

He replies casually, "Of course I do' What in the world would make you think that I don't?"

She knew that he wasn't able to understand why hearing this made her so happy, why it meant so much to her.

*****************************************************************

When Bani hesitantly walked into the restaurant to join Anu, she instantly colored on seeing the amused look on her face as she seated herself at their table.

Anu: Di, you took a really long time. I was beginning to worry that you forgot all about me' What took you so long?

To her amazement she actually takes Jai's advice'''. She lies.

Bani: I was in the restroom'.. So, what do you want to order?

O my God, Dil......I am so deeply touched, thrilled and flattered that u have continued to write this story for my sake and moreover dedicated it to me.

I have been a crazy fan of your stories and post my comments and views regularly. But I am still wondering what I did to deserve the honor of being dedicated by you....Anyways thanks a million for hearing out my request and continuing with this FF.

The very start of this FF was different from the rest that u have written and that's y it captured me rt from the beginning. Middle class Jai with the responsibility of his young siblings without the support of any other grown up / family member, an ordinary working class and on the contrary, a rich Bani belonging to high class father....and for both of them love at first sight.

Since it was love at first sight and they have already developed to kissing each other, maybe we can get a lot of coochi cooings and romance / flirtings going on.....😉 😃

Will be eagerly waiting for the next part. 😍 Thanks a ton, once again for continuing this FF.

Until ur next update, hopefully sometime soon.....
Cheers
Ramya ❤️🤗
