Love stories that weren't meant to be

STAR One's latest offering, Pyaar Kii Ye Kahani, is all set to hit the screens. The storyline promises to be interesting, with a young couple ' Piya and Abhay ' falling in love, only to find that it was never meant to be, because Abhay is non human! He is crushed between his love for Piya and his primal instinct. As we await this dark love story, let us take a look at some of the Hollywood movies that have explored this concept of love between non-humans and mortals.




Avatar

James Cameron's 2009 film Avatar is the beautiful love story of a human, Jake Sully, with Neytiri, an inhabitant of planet Pandora, called the Na'vis. Jake is working for the RDA Corporation, who sends him to Pandora in the guise of a Na'vi, to obtain intelligence about the planet and the rich sources of the valuable mineral unobtanium on the planet. Like most other Na'vis, Neytiri is in love with Pandora and would do anything to protect it. After a few initial combats between them, Jake and Neytiri get close to each other.

Neytiri is heartbroken to learn of Jake's true purpose in visiting Pandora, and no amount of convincing makes the Na'vis believe in him. Jake ultimately resorts to putting his life on stake to convince Neytiri and the Na'vis that he is no longer an outsider, and that he loves her deeply.

The Little Mermaid

The 1989 Walt Disney animated film, The Little Mermaid, tells the tale of a sixteen-year-old mermaid princess, Ariel, who falls in love with the prince of the town, Prince Eric. The touching love story is based on the fable by Hans Christian Andersen by the same name. In spite of being warned by her father, King Triton, that contact between mer-people and humans is forbidedden, Ariel is lovestruck and thinks of a way to be united with Eric. She trades her beautiful voice for a pair of legs, which, unfortunately, is the one thing that Eric recognizes Ariel by.

Ariel finally succeeds in being one with Eric after a lot of heartbreak, thanks to the evil sea witch Ursula.

King Kong

The 2005 movie King Kong is a remake of the 1933 film by the same name. It tells of the strange love between the giant gorilla King Kong and the pretty actress Ann Darrow, played by Naomi Watts. On the way to shoot a film, Ann is claimed by King Kong. Sometime, in the midst of Kong rescuing Ann from the dangerous Vastatosaurus Rex, to communicating with her in sign language, to watching Ann juggle and dance, King Kong falls in love with her.

King Kong gets angry to see that when the film finally comes out, Ann is not in the headlines. He wreaks havoc in the theatre. Ann just realizes Kong's love for her, when he takes the bullet in the process of protecting her.

Shrek

The 2001 animated film Shrek is another supernatural love story between Shrek, an ogre, and the beautiful Princess Fiona, played by Cameron Diaz. Fiona is disappointed to know that Shrek is an ogre, but she soon learns that they have a lot in common. Fiona tells Donkey, Shrek's companion, about a curse that was placed on her in childhood, which makes her an ogre every night. Shrek misunderstands Fiona's conversation, and is distressed, thinking that she is disgusted with his ugly being.

There are a lot of trials and tribulations before Shrek truly understands Fiona's words, and rescues her from the evil Farquaad.

Beauty And The Beast

Beauty And The Beast is a 1991 animated film by Walt Disney, which tells of the love between a beautiful girl, Belle, and an ugly Beast, who has been transformed by an enchantress's spell. Belle goes to the Beast's castle to rescue her father, Maurice, who has been imprisoned by the Beast. The Beast and Belle become friends, and he gives her the castle library and a magic mirror as a gift. The realization that Belle is leaving makes the Beast feel love for her.

Thanks to the town villain Gaston, the Beast gets attacked in his castle and ultimately gets stabbed. He loses his footing from the balcony and falls. The Beast is just about to succumb to his injuries when Belle proclaims her love for him, bringing him back to life again.

Twilight

The 2008 film Twilight, based on Stephanie Meyer's novel by the same name. It is another love story between a vampire, Edward Cullen, and a pretty girl, Bella. Edward and Bella meet each other in school, and fall in love, going against vampires' basic instinct of drinking human blood.

Bella almost falls prey to some nomadic vampires from Edward's family, who wish to hunt her. She goes through a lot of terror and pain before Edward arrives on the scene and rescues her. Edward ultimately succeeds in saving his lady love from becoming a vampire by sucking out the venom that his family had bitten into her wrist.
