Update: Friday, 10 April 2009
I have decided to do a brief update since it is 0800 GMT on Saturday, 11 April, and no one has updated as yet, presumably because of busy schedules. I trust the scheduled updater will not clobber me on the head for doing her/his job 😉
Varatharajan and Sivagami go to the groom's house. There is no sense of how much time has lapsed since the accident in which Thaatha died. Raghu, we are told, had had to be hospitalized. Groom's father welcomes Varatharajan with a "Sir" rather than "Sammandhi" and Vara is surprised. Groom's dad recalls the bad omen of Thaatha's glasses breaking and says his relatives have advised him to call off the marriage to avert any other potential disaster. He is sure another bride can be found for Raghu and adds that Anandhi should have no problem finding another groom either. Vara gets upset since the marriage date has already been fixed and raises his voice. The groom's dad tells him off as does his wife. Sivagami counsels her husband to control his temper. Vara spews out a bit more of his anger before leaving.
As they get out of the car and enter their home, the dejected Vara tells Sivagami not to reveal to the children what had happened at Raghu's home. But Anandhi, who has been anxiously waiting for word of what had happened, presses her dad. She senses that the groom's parents must have decided to call off the wedding and asks whether Raghu was consulted in the decision. Sivagami interjects and tells her husband that there is no point covering up anything. Vara then explains the situation and adds that he was never given a chance to meet Raghu. Anandhi is downcast but seems to take the matter in her stride. When she has left, Vara wonders what he had done wrong to deserve such a fate. He then recalls that he had failed to offer prayers to their kula deivam at their village temple for some years. He suggests they go as a family to pray for a positive outcome for Anandhi's marriage.
Ganesh has arranged for a tour bus and the whole family arrives at the temple, including Gayathri and Elango. A pongal is cooked at the courtyard by Sivagami and the family members then offer an abishegam, with flowers and a sari. When the whole family has completed their circumbulation of the sanctum, they huddle in one corner of the courtyard and chat. Ganesh steps aside and is talking to someone on the cell phone.
A lady and her younger brother arrive at the temple in an auto. The lady seems to be mentally unstable and asks where they are. When told that they are at the temple, she asks where the bride and groom are. The brother pacifies her somehow and takes her to the sanctum. He makes her hold up her hands in prayer. The priest asks the man how his sister is and the latter replies in resignation that she is pretty much the same. As the man is engrossed in prayer, the lady spots Ganesh on the phone. She slips away and then suddenly accosts Ganesh. She accuses Ganesh of having abandoned her daughter, Arti, after having promised to marry her and demands to know where Arti is. Vara and the rest of the family are shocked and ask Ganesh what is happening. As Ganesh stumbles to say something, the lady's brother comes running and apologises for her behaviour. He explains that his sister has been mentally disturbed since her daughter, Arti, committed suicide. Vara says there is no need to apologise and offers his sympathy. As the family prepares to leave the temple, Ganesh has a flashback. Arti is shown on the phone for a split second; then a fire is shown blazing.
The camera pans across the Singapore skyline, complete with skyscrapers and a Merlion. Then, a plane is shown landing. Presumably, someone is returning to Chennai from Singapore. The camera pans to an escalator. A sari-clad lady is coming down -- Meena in permed hair! Freeze.
