Abhishek Bachchan owes Mani Ratnam for honing his talent
MUMBAI: Abhishek Bachchan, who has recently been shooting for his favourite director - Mani Ratnam - feels he owes the nurturing of his talent to Ratnam.

Bachchan was shooting out of Orcha in Jhansi since mid-November for Ratnam's latest project - Raavan.

Speaking to Businessocinema.com, Bachchan confessed, "Well, it's been six years that I've had the pleasure of working with Mani. We started Yuva in 2003 and over the years he's grown from being a mentor to now, a dear friend."

Bachchan is so fond of Mani that he has never discussed financial remunerations with the director. Doing Ratnam's film has always been the uppermost thing on  mind.

Talking more about the director, Bachchan said, "The most anxious moments are the ones when you're about to start a film with him, because after having worked with him on three films, I have learnt that you can never be fully prepared for what challenge he's going to give you. His greatness is that he manages to make what seemed as a challenge at the start, a beautiful journey by the time you get done."

Abhishek has had to add inches to his waistline for all of Mani's films, be it as Lallan Singh in Yuva or Gurukant Desai in Guru. The actor was on a diet of rasgullas to add almost 20 kgs to his lean frame. And now for his latest Raavan, AB has had to lose weight to achieve a gaunt look and so has been eating idlis and sambar for some months now. But that's not all that Mani extracts from AB.

AB revealed, "What I love about working with him the most is how he pushes me creatively. He always wants to push the envelope and in turn makes a better actor out of you. His contribution to my life and career is something I will eternally be obliged to him for."

Bachchan to shoot in Bhutan for Taalismaan

After Aladdin, Amitabh Bachchan will be seen in yet another fantasy film titled Taalismaan. The film will go on the floors by the end of 2009 and shooting will take place in Bhutan jungles.

A source from the production house says, "Big B's look is going to be very different from all his previous looks. He plays the role of a warrior. The film's plot is based along the lines of the Hindi novel, Chandrakanta. Because the film is different, the shooting will take place in Bhutan where the geography is also quite different. We will erect a huge set in Bhutan as well as one in Mumbai. It is a big project and is still in the pre-production stage. There is a lot of research to be done. Right now, Vidhu Vinod Chopra is busy with 3 Idiots. Once that film is wrapped up, Talisman will go on the floors- maybe by the end of 2009. Frankly speaking, we are also waiting for this time of recession to pass before we can start."

Talking about the cast of this big-budget flick, the source says, "Besides Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan stars in the film and will be playing a princess. Abhishek is also co-staring and Sanjay Dutt is playing a negative character. Aishwarya's look hasn't been decided on yet but it will surely be very appealing as Chandrakanta is charismatic and physically strong. She will be required to do sword fighting. The role is 90% Aishwarya's but if not, Vidhu Vinod Chopra is in talks with Deepika Padukone too."

Taalismaan is a love story that focuses on war, love and greed for power. The film is directed by Ram Madwani. The promo shoot with Amitabh Bachchan was done last year. It shows Big B in a white costume with long white hair. He is riding a white horse and guiding a battalion of soldiers. One vertical half of his face is covered with a mask.

Bachchan On Davos, Escapism And The Power Of The Dark Theater

Amitabh Bachchan strides through Heathrow Airport in a flowing coat topped with a bright scarf. A king of Bollywood, the Big B of Indian cinema, he has just accepted the Crystal Award from the World Economic Forum.

The award for Bachchan, another Crystal Award to the Indian dancer Mallika Sarabhailarge, and the higher profile of Indian corporate and government leaders in Davos added a distinctly Eastern tilt to the Forum.

Bachchan described the mostly gloomy Davos discussions on the economy on his BigB blog report from Davos, and summed up the answers he gave reporters who asked for his reaction:

I put forward however that being in the movies was perhaps the best profession at the moment to be in because it was recession free ! After having lost your millions and billions, it would not be out of place to seek solace in taking your mind away from the depression, by watching a movie. It only cost a few dollars !!

But I took pride in the fact that an honor such as the Crystal Award was bestowed on me, an Indian from the world of escapist commercial cinema, a cinema which 50-60 years ago was not such a bright profession to be in. Children from good homes were not encouraged to go anywhere near it ; an activity that was considered infra dig. But look how this very escapist cinema had progressed through the years, where today in an International forum of some eminence, I was able to stand and represent my fraternity and my country in a most humbling recognition.

Bollywood sells as many tickets as Hollywood. The central character in "Slumdog Millionaire" is shown as a Bachchan fan. Although the global number of Google searches for Bachchan puts him on the same scale as Sean Connery, he retains a cloak of anonymity in the West. Flying from Zurich, Bachchan tolerated a late takeoff along with all the other passengers on the mostly full British Airways jet. In the airport corridor in London, as the trail wends toward customs, other travelers seem unaware of his presence.

I asked if he was staying in London, and Bachchan said it was just a stop over on the way to New York. If he can escape from a city paralyzed by what Chicago would call a mild snowfall, the Bollywood star will be in Manhattan for the opening of "Pink Panther 2," which features Steve Martin and Bachchan's daughter-in-law, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

We separated at the customs line, where Bachchan's worldwide fan base included at least one worker, a woman of Indian descent, who gazed open-mouthed, then grabbed the actor by the hand and escorted him ahead of a short line.

Delhi-6
Delhi-6
UTV

Abhishek Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor in a scene from the film "Delhi-6," directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra.

February 20, 2009

Indian Soul

You don't have to love "Delhi-6" to admire Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, a director who has found a way to make personal films within the commercial Hindi cinema. His ambitions are vast: "Delhi-6" is nothing less than a referendum on the modern Indian soul.

Sprawling, sentimental and often too self-conscious, the movie follows an American of Indian descent (Abhishek Bachchan) who brings his ailing grandmother to Delhi to spend her last days. Mr. Mehra's storytelling method, more exploratory than linear, loosely weaves big themes — caste, untouchability, Hindu-Muslim tensions, the perfidy of priests and politicians — into a series of small vignettes.

Mr. Mehra clearly loves Delhi (Delhi-6 is the postal code of the old city, the area with the Chandni Chowk marketplace and the Red Fort) and wants to create a multifaceted portrait of the city and its inhabitants. At times he does. But his burbling stew of a tale takes too long to find itself, and the tone can veer uncomfortably from the lightly banal (how charming are the folk and folkways of Delhi!) to the darkly serious (how violent are the folk and folkways of Delhi!).

Leading a large ensemble cast, Mr. Bachchan keeps things light as Roshan, the American who falls in love with Delhi and a Delhi girl (Sonam Kapoor). But who is this guy? What kind of life — job? girlfriend? — has he left behind in New York?

"Delhi-6" can be maddeningly vague, which robs its ending — a finale as joltingly (melo)dramatic as any in Bollywood — of the impact it intends.

DELHI-6

Opens on Friday nationwide.

Directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra; written by Kamlesh Pandey; director of photography, Ravi K. Chandran; edited by P. S. Bharti; music by A. R. Rahman; produced by Mr. Mehra and Ronnie Screwvala; released by UTV. In Hindi and English, with English subtitles. Running time: 2 hours 20 minutes. This film is not rated.

WITH: Abhishek Bachchan (Roshan), Sonam Kapoor (Bittu), Rishi Kapoor (Ali), Waheeda Rehman (Dadi), Prem Chopra (Lala Bhairam) and Om Puri (Madan Gopal).

Talking Shop: Abhishek Bachchan

One of Bollywood's best known couples - Abhishek Bachchan and his wife Aishwarya Rai - have been busy promoting their new films.
Delhi 6
Delhi 6 tells the tale of a boy who returns to Delhi after living in New York
The former Miss World-turned-actress stars alongside Steve Martin in Pink Panther 2. Meanwhile her husband Abhishek - son of the legendary Amitabh Bachchan - is releasing his latest Bollywood film called Delhi 6. Delhi 6 is inspired by the postal code of the ancient walled city in Old Delhi and forms the backdrop to the movie. The story revolves around an American Indian, Roshan, who travels from the USA to India for the first time with his ailing grandmother. On his recent trip to London, Abhishek spoke about his wife's movie as well as his own.
Your wife is currently starring in Pink Panther 2 - what did you make of her performance? Absolutely hilarious. I was laughing my head off! I mean it's the Pink Panther - you can't go wrong - it's a fantastic franchise and a great genre. It's something Aishwarya hasn't done before - she hasn't done much comedy. She was very reluctant to do the film at first and made the mistake of asking me how I felt. I said: 'Listen don't even think about it. You know you've got Steve Martin, Andy Garcia, Alfred Molina, Emily Mortimer and Jean Reno in it.
Pink Panther 2
Aishwarya Rai stars alongside Steve Martin, playing the hapless Inspecteur Clouseau
'They are actors we've all grown up with and you're getting the opportunity to work with them. 'Just Steve Martin alone, according to me, is a complete genius so just work with him for the experience. You'll be richer for it.' She said OK and she did it and she had a blast making it. I'm happy she did it and she's happy she did it. Let's talk about your film Delhi 6... I think especially for a lot of people here in the UK or anyone living outside India whose families are from there will associate with the film. It's the journey of one boy who goes back home to Delhi from New York. It's really going to touch a chord with people who know what it feels like to spend a lot of time outside their homeland. I'm very proud of the film. I saw the rough cut of the film and I'm immensely proud. I want to scream from the roof tops 'people go watch this film'. It's a good film. You filmed at the Taj Mahal, didn't you? There's a scene in the film where they take me to the Taj Mahal. You can't go to India and not see the Taj Mahal. So since it's very close to Delhi - there's a scene where we go there. The authorities were wonderful and they gave us permission to film there. We were shooting quietly and then came away. In the movie you work with some of Bollywood's legends, such as Waheeda Rehman and Rishi Kapoor. What was it like to work with the older generation? Brilliant! Brilliant! I think the greatest thing about them is they're more like kids on set. You go there thinking I'm just going to absorb and learn from these great actors but you end up realising they're actually observing you and learning from you. That's what makes them great! It's your second film with Sonam Kapoor- what was it like working with her? Great fun! She's such a wonderful young actress and I wish her all the best because I think she's done a very commendable job in the movie. She's someone who's really going to leave her stamp on Indian movies. She's great fun and a pleasure to be with on set. I'm intrigued by the character named after an Indian sweet - Jalebi Jalebi is played by Divya Dutta, another wonderful actor. That's just it - it's a huge bouquet of wonderful characters - it's just wonderful to be part of it. Tell me about your next film which you are shooting with your wife Aishwarya Rai We're currently shooting a film with Director Mani Ratnam in India which hasn't got a title yet but will be ready by the end of the year.

Delhi 6 goes on general release in the UK on 20 February. Abhishek Bachchan was talking to BBC Asian Network's Shabnam Mahmood.

Amitabh Bachchan visits Shahrukh

Friday, February 20, 2009, 8:34 [IST]

The Big B has rubbished off all the rumours that he is not in good terms with Shahrukh Khan. Yesterday, he drove to Shahrukh's residence and enquired about his health.

Amitabh Bachchan had earlier called King Khan, who is recuperating from the recent surgery, and told him not to take post-surgery period lightly. He wished him speedy recovery and Shahrukh thanked him for his concern.

Shahrukh underwent surgery on 16th February at the Breach Candy Hospital to do away with the nagging pain in his left shoulder. The surgery was successful and the actor was discharged the next day. It is reported that he is going to host the 54th Idea Filmfare Awards on March 7 in spite of the doctor's to take complete rest for at least 6 weeks.

Well, Shahrukh should take good care of his health!

Abhishek Bachchan and Salman Khan together!

By ApunKaChoice
Fri, Feb 20, 2009 18:45 IST

Abhishek Bachchan and Salman Khan will be seen together as guests on Farhan Akhtar 's chat show.

The two actors who used to share cold vibes now gel well and are henceforth invited together on Farhan's talk show 'Oye! It's Friday'. Farhan generally has two celebrities as guests for every episode. And according to sources, Abhi and Sallu will shoot together on same day for the show.

Farhan's talk show has good TRP ratings now since witty
Karan Johar 's 'Koffee with Karan' is not on. Farhan's show is one such programme where you can catch your favourite celebs at their candid best.
On any chat show, since there are personal questions, it's worth watching how the two stars will react and manage. Abhishek is married to Aishwarya Rai with whom Salman once had a volatile romantic affair before she dumped him. He later found love in Katrina Kaif .

Farhan's show contains loads of gags and spoofs and his style of hosting makes it worth watching. He's got
Aamir Khan as well as Shahrukh Khan already on his show. The only Khan left was Salman. And for Abhishek it's a long sabbatical since he appeared on small screen, that too in a talk show.

Feb 26 is the shoot day and the episode will be aired in March.

SRK calls, Bachchan drops in to 'play games'
OUR BUREAU AND AGENCIES
Amitabh leaves Mannat after meeting Shah Rukh on Wednesday. (Fotocorp)

Mumbai, Feb. 18: Amitabh Bachchan today visited Shah Rukh Khan, who got back home yesterday after a shoulder surgery.

Bachchan drove to Mannat, Shah Rukh's seafront mansion in Bandra, this evening.

Shah Rukh, who had a surgery to repair a tear in the main muscle of his left shoulder at Breach Candy on Monday, was said to have told Bachchan he returned home early as he was feeling depressed in the hospital.

Yesterday, Bachchan had urged Shah Rukh "not to take the post-surgery period lightly and avoid any kind of activity". The two spoke after Shah Rukh called to thank Bachchan for his message wishing him a "speedy recovery".

Bachchan recounted the conversation on his blog later yesterday. "Do not take after-surgery too lightly, I warn him, take rest and do not get into any kind of activity. He sounds a little groggy. I shall visit him tomorrow." He spent almost an hour with Shah Rukh today.

This was Shah Rukh's second surgery, the first was conducted in London in 2003 for a back problem.

Shah Rukh and wife Gauri had visited Bachchan at Lilavati Hospital in December 2005 when he underwent an operation for jejunal diverticulitis and was hospitalised for 19 days.

The two actors, who have starred together in blockbusters like Mohabbatein and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, have repeatedly said they share a cordial relationship despite persistent speculation about their "rivalry".

The talk about their cold vibes intensified after Shah Rukh starred in the remake Bachchan classic Don in 2006 and followed him as the host in a sequel of Kaun Banega Crorepati.

The game show is behind them but the two still appear to have a penchant for games. Writing on his blog, Bachchan appeared to suggest it was time for play.

Shah Rukh with wife Gauri visits Amitabh at Lilavati in 2005

"Come home sir, we shall play some games," he quoted Shah Rukh as saying when the two spoke yesterday and Bachchan said he had been planning to visit him in hospital.

They were known to have loved such light moments on the sets of Bhoothnath, their last film together which released in 2008, often laying the board for a hand at Trivial Pursuit and other games.

Their bonhomie on the sets helped muffle rumours of their "rivalry", much before Bachchan began insisting on his blog they had always been "good friends and how the media had "set them up against each other".

The Bollywood Big Two might, however, rue having missed a game show that could have put them in Oscar spotlight: both Bachchan and Shah Rukh turned down Anil Kapoor's role of a game show host in Slumdog Millionaire. The film has bagged 10 nominations for the Oscars, to be announced next Monday.

Big B teams up with SRK in Farah's next

Peace, actually
Wassup my almond- 'n' -walnut macaroons? For a change, I'm gonna be so sweet and nice today that you'll probably think I'm a walking-talking-sexy barfi. I am, but that's another story.

For now, the todu khabar is that Amitabh Bachchan is teaming up with Shah Rukh Khan for his production Happy New Year.. and by the end of 2009, will shoot for it too.. under the nirdeshan of Farah Khan.

When the movie was first planned, SRK wasn't too pleased with the way the storyline was shaping up in the second half. Besides, Bachchan saab wasn't keeping too well then. So the actor-producer and his director-friend chose to put Happy New Year on hold and started work on another script, Om Shanti Om.

Meanwhile, Farah reworked the script and now that SRK and she are pleased with it, they have decided to make Happy New Year next. I'm told the duo will start working on it once SRK completes Karan Johar's My Name is Khan.

Meanwhile, Bachchan saab, who had expressed his willingness to be a part of the movie then, is believed to be pleased with the script and has even allotted his dates for the shoot.

I just hope this puts an end to all speculations of star wars etc etc. After all, I'm such a peace loving girl, no.
