Chapter 24

A few days past by. Maan couldn't get Geet out of his head anymore. He just craved to be with her and have her around him. He remembered how she had laughed at him and he missed it so much. The thought of her being with Vicky was like thorns in his eyes. He was kind of happy that Vicky had left for few days. He probably wouldn't be able to control his frustration. Vicky had left KC for good and now there again was an empty cabin next to his. Dev had given up looking for a secretary for him. At the end it happened that that post was given to Seema, the second receptionist. It was a bad idea.

"WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?" Maan was in the cabin. All files were disorganised and she had even mixed the contents of few of them. Seema flinched. She cursed Dev for putting her in this situation. She had a degree but was only given a job as a receptionist. She wouldn't have taken it if she wasn't in desperate need of the job. Now she had been given tasks that were out of her range of capabilities. She had, too, seen Geet work as his secretary. She could understand that Geet had resigned.

"YOU ARE FIRED SEEMA. JUST GET LOST."

"Fine sir." Seema took her bag and told Pinky about it. Pinky felt bad for her friend.

"Seema, why don't you apply at MC? They are a good firm, I am sure something can be worked out." Pinky whispered into Seema's ears. She looked around to see if someone had heard. She was not keen on being caught by helping the enemy recruit.

Geet looked at the application. Seema had a first class degree in architecture yet she had worked as a receptionist.

"If I may ask, why didn't you look for another job instead of accepting the one at KC?"

"I needed the money. I am dependant on my regular salary to pay for rent and living costs. And KC has a big name." Geet nodded.

"Do you mind if I ask what made you leave?"

"Maan sir fired me." Geet looked up. Another one.

"Actually, it is because of you." Seema added after a minute.

"Me?"

"Since you have left KC he is going mad. He is so used to your efficiency that he fires everyone who can't keep up. Even his youngest brother left." Geet sighed. She now realised that it was a bad idea working at KC. Seema wasn't to only one who had left or was fired. But she did have her fun there at times and made it clear to Maan that he could not have his way with her.

"You are hired Seema. I am not doing it because you used to work for KC nor because I pity you. I believe in giving people a fair chance to prove themselves." Geet told Muskaan to type up an appointment letter.

"Yash, meet Seema Gupta. She will be working along side you from now on. I hope you can show her around and get her familiar with all the work we do." She left both of them.

In a way she felt bad that KC was going through so much. Adi and Vicky were looking at her when she said that. Adi smiled.

"Geet, I know you are kind hearted but in this business you need to be best. KC was able to do what they liked since no other company could keep up and now that we are proving to be better they have to adjust. It is normal."

"Adi is right Geet. The last thing you should feel is sorry for Maan." Vicky still was angry on his brother and Geet and Adi heard it in his voice.

"Ok. But all of their employee's are landing up with us; don't you think that is a bit too much?"

"Maan fires people everyday. For him efficiency is vital. Unfortunately he never lets people prove their ability to him. You on the other hand give people a chance and most importantly see them as people not as working machines." Vicky grimaced as he remembered how his brother made him work.

Maan had a meeting with his staff members. KC was losing its popularity. They were still the best but MC was gaining on hold and clients were curious about this new company. The reason they had set this meeting was because just today a potential client had cancelled their meeting with KC and said they wanted to work with MC instead.

"We are the best." Maan said to them. There were Dev, Sasha, Meera, the new guy from Accounts (Aman), Tasha, Rahul (a new creative) and Pinky. Maan had asked Pinky to join him because usually Adi would have been here and he felt like Pinky would be a good substitute.

"We all know that. But still Mishra Constructions is managing to gain on popularity. What is it that they have that we lack?" Geet' Pinky chuckled inwardly at her thought.

"Sir as far as I know, most of the old staff had left and MC had employed many new people. Some are experienced but most are young people who had little or no previous experience at this field of work." Aman had said. Even he considered working at MC but he applied for KC as he had better chances here.

"This should give us even more reason to think. Is it the facilities they have? We have latest technologies. Is it the work load? We have enough staff members to divide work without burdening one person too much" Meera coughed slowly. Only she and Dev knew how wrong he was. Sasha only took up important projects and she was left with the rest. Tasha was no good as she kept doing mistakes which increased her work. Meera gave Dev a quick look. She could read in his eyes that he understood but asked her to remain silent.

"Is it the working environment? I know it is a little chaotic at times but still." Now everyone looked at each other. A little chaotic was not doing their situation justice. They were in a state of constant chaos, most of the time because people were clueless as to what to do or couldn't manage. The fear of being fired and the prospects of being yelled at by Maan were not helping them either.

"MK, I think we should try something different. We are as we were in the past and did pretty well. So we should see how MC staff is. Maybe we could invite them to a party to check them out. Maybe one of them is going to spill what makes MC so special." Sasha suggested. Maan nodded.

"This way we could also meet their MD. It seems that he never attends business parties; it is always the Executive MD and his colleagues that go" Maan thought loud.

"Fine, I like this idea. But we will make it a little different. I want to invite as many potential clients as possible. This is going to be the best place to show them that we are the best and going to anyone else is a huge mistake." They further discussed on details of this party. Maan wanted everything to be perfect. Dev was to take over responsibility for most of it and Sasha and Tasha were to work under him. Dev wished Tasha would not try to do some work, every thing she attempted to do ended with disastrous results. Meera and Aman looked at the guest list and Pinky was to make the invitations. When everyone left, Maan held Pinky back.

"Pinky, I hope this discussion will not go out of this office."

"Don't worry sir. I won't call Adi or Geet and tell them."

Geet had received the invitation card. It was obvious that Maan wanted to check out her staff members. She had seen a lot of KC and most of them were proud and confident to be working at KC. The problem with pride and confidence was that an over dose clouded the inner eye and one couldn't judge situations clearly. She just put the invitation into her drawer and smiled.
