Chapter 3

Coffee oh Coffee!

Shlok slammed his fist on the lifts button but to no use; it was as if its electricity supply was cut off. Astha, through her dizzy eyes saw his lips quiver in sheer anger. She thought she heard him kick the poor metal of the door and rush towards the stair case probably.

Dont tell me!' She thought. Is this monster Agnihotri going to carry me down all the way ...Phew!!!!! curse you diet plans...'

Two hundred and forty three stairs down, he wasn't sweating let alone any panting. Astha was surprised. Are you human?' She wanted to ask but why the need she already thought of him as a monster.

The road was abandoned and any sign of something close to a vehicle seemed out of question. Astha got tense; Shlok put her down. She balanced herself the circles were now gone.

"Thank you, Sir." She spoke softly. He nodded.

How on earth do i get home now? Not that i am gonna ask this arrogant Agnihotri...what if he refuses?' Astha was busy in her thoughts when Shlok turned around to head for the parking lot. Her jaw fell open.

"What's the address?" He said reaching for his car. Her already dropped jaw wanted to open up a bit more.

He aint that akdu after all...' She smiled to herself.

After last night Astha presumed that everything between her and that Agnihotri would now be even but she was wrong. That sie of Agnihotri vanished as soon as it came. He was all tha same the next morning.

"Akira got her ankle fractured last night... you will assist me for the day Miss Kirloskar."

"Why me?" Astha blurted.

He slightly flared his nostrils and his usually expressionless visage showed traces of anger.

"Dont ask me stupid questions... its an order."

"Order my foot... what makes you think i'll be bringing you your stupid coffees all day long." Astha muttered.

"You said something?"

"No sir. Certainly not..."

"Good now go get me a steaming mug of coffee... one cube only." She coughed he had heard her after all. Stupid me!' She bit her tongue and left for the pantry.

"What's this?" Shlok threw a stern glance in her direction. Astha smiled and staring at the smiley face on the creamy top of the cappuccino said,

"Sir, research says that people who want to learn how to smile should take coffees with smiley faces on them..."

He rolled his eyes.

"Any hint for those who smile too much?" She twisted her lips as if offended.

"Black bitter without milk... get that... now take this away."

"insult of coffee..." She muttered and left.

"Crazy is she..." Shlok rolled his eyes.

The strong bitter aroma of his black coffee hitting her nose spoiled her mood.

"Who on earth can bear that?" She said out aloud and ran towards his cabin only to hit him on the exit.

"Shit!" She exclaimed seeing his ivy white shirt stained with hot coffee. He glared at her as if his eyes would eat her the very moment.

"Sorry Sir!" She muttered.

"Sorry my foot... cant you watch where you are going...?" He fumed.

Astha shifter her gaze utterly confused as to what to say,

"Sir woh um..."

"worthless..." He uttered and almost pushed her aside to go get him something to change.

Astha's jaw fell at his reaction.

"How could he be so rude...?" Tears gathered at the corners of her eyes.

His image had dropped in her eyes again. Shlok was again that mean old demon she had met that day on the road. Her mood was utterly down for the next day.

"Astha come into my cabin..." Shlok said through the intercom.

"Yes sir." She forced and slammed the cordless back.

She entered his cabin with her bazooka on her shoulder.

"We have to arrange a project inauguration party for our new venture... the clients will be from abroad and Akira wouldn't be here for the next week or so. You will be managing everything."

She nodded as if least interested. He rolled his eyes at her cold reply.

"any specifications sir?"

She asked.

"yeah of course... the theme should be very formal, food continental, i don't like those party lights so cut them out, a wide variety of appetizers, drinks and dinner should be served before nine, no loud music and sorry..."

As soon as she rolled his last words she looked up in surprise.

"Hun?"

He smirked.

"I mean don't do anything you have to be sorry for later like you did just now..."

It was as if he was mocking her. Astha registered his smirk and pressed her lips tight.

What does he think of me? A clumsy clown am i?' She was boiling with anger inside.

He told her the venue and time after which she left, stomping back and almost slamming the door behind her.

So many sides to her.' Shlok thought as she left.

And anger did her good after all, she was so engrossed in making everything perfect that she lost track of time. The huge hall was perfect for a grand part by midnight. Astha rubbed her hands admiring her own work.

You can not be not impressed now Mr. Shlok Agnihotri... these arrangements are out of your mind.' She smirked to herself.

The arrangements were magnificent. After all the event designers cant be as creative as an architect. She received Shlok's call just then.

"Sir,"

"You are home?"

"No... just got over with the prep..."

"It's almost midnight Astha... what took you so long?"

"Umm...just heading for home... will you be checking in for a look?" She asked crossing her fingers he wouldn't.

"Sure i am just outside will be in in a minute..." He said cutting the call.

"Fish!!" Astha muttered. "Why now? Why not tomorrow...oh God!"

Just then the lights flickered and then there was a complete blackout much to Astha's horror. She gasped and yelled. There was no one around; everyone had left after the arrangements were complete.

"Oh God!" She helplessly cried. She had started sweating and panting in a matter of seconds only. Tears rolled down outstanding her fear.

She yelled again hitting something which caught her in its frame.

"Relax Astha...its me Shlok..." He said calming her down.

Out of relief and a sense of security she hugged him tight and started sobbing loud. Shlok confused at her sudden outburst tried calming her down.

"What happened? are you okay?" He asked with concern scared that she wasn't hurt.

She did not reply instead continued with her weeping.

"Astha... are you hurt? What happened? Tell me damn it!" He was getting anxious now.

"the...lights... darkness... i got afraid!" She completed her broken sentence.

Shlok laughed.

"And i thought you were a wild cat..."

She sobbed again.

"Okay okay...i am here na! No one's coming to get you..."

She pulled out of his embrace gripping his arms tightly as if she if loosened a bit he would run away.

She cleared her tears with one hand while the other rested on his arm conveniently.

"What about..." She trailed off.

"It's okay... the first thing I do coming morning will be checking out the prep..."

"Okay..."

"Come I will drop you home..." He offered.

Astha nodded. He held her hand and led her out. She finally relaxed once the lights were there. Shlok realized how much darkness frightened her. She was utterly exhausted and scared.

"Why are you so scared of darkness?" He asked while driving.

She kept silent for a while and then slowly whispered.

"It leaves me helpless..."

He did not get what that meant but they did not speak a word after that.
