Chapter 2

'Two Can Play The Game'

Astha face palmed herself in her thoughts for being extra smart all the time. "Why did I have to call him a moron that day?' She cursed herself.

But she was Astha after all, the one with the solution of all the problems in the world. She was pretty sure Shlok wasn't smart enough to erase all the previous data from her PC, which was exactly the case. She searched out the whole archive for the previous blue prints of similar structures and after her hour of cut, copy and paste she was finally done with a complete new design. Shlok would never have guessed she had not programmed it herself. Even after she was done it was two hours to dusk. She smiled and pated herself at the back. What do you think I do not know why you want new prints Mr. Shlok?' She thought and smirked.

For the next two hours she was busy chatting over the table with her colleague Arav, such a fine company he was. They blabbered about all the nonsense in the world. Shifting their notion to their common distaste ingredient, Shlok Agnihotri. While Astha was busy pronouncing gibberish Arav signaled her the arrival of the iron man. She straightened up and started typing as if she knew not anything else in the world. Shlok passed by ignoring her presence through his eyes; he stood by Arav and asked him something, meanwhile stealing glances at Astha who clicked the mouse ferociously.

Before he left he addressed her, Finally!' Astha thought.

"Miss Kirloskar... when do I get to see the designs."

She straightened and gulped down the lump in her throat. "Almost done, Sir."

He nodded and left.

"How did you do it in an hour only?" A surprised Arav asked.

Astha shrugged as if it weren't anything out of the normal. She left for his cabin rather pompously. It wasn't a surprise that Shlok could not figure out the technique.

Astha's mom saw her sitting near the open window of her room. She approached her with a brimming glass of milk.

"How was my daughter's first day at office?" She asked caressing her tangled hair; Astha was previously sleeping.

"Couldn't have been better..."

"You are satisfied with it na?"

"More than just satisfied..." An adventurous boss' what else could one want?' She completed her sentence in her thoughts. Her mom left, she stared out at the chuckling stars in the night sky; something she could not miss before sleeping. Was more of a tradition in her life now.

Astha made sure she was half hour early the next morning so that arrogant boss of hers could not get a chance to trigger his words on her. On the main entrance she accidently collided into him all the folders in her hand flew in the air. She did lose balance but her hand was caught by Shlok in time. A heartbeat of eye-lock before both straightened up.

"I am sorry, Sir."

Shlok looked away.

"Hmm..."

Astha bent down to pick up the mess of sheets from the floor. WOW! How audacious? First he doesn't see where he is going and then doesn't even help me keep this mess...hun akdu!' She thought. She got up, excused herself and made for the elevator. Shlok called her from behind.

"Miss Kirloskar...The elevator is out of order... try working on the stairs today..."

"What?" She muttered but pasted a fake smile and moved on. After jumping and hopping and climbing up those never-ending two hundred and forty three stairs she was aghast and bushed up.

"Astha dear are you working out?" Arav greeted her with his question. She panted and gasped for breath.

"Hell no, wasn't the lift out of functioning?"

He narrowed his eyes. "No!"

She scrunched her brows in utter confuzzlement. "Don't tell me!"

Arav shrugged. Astha fumed with anger.

"Damn you Agnihotri..." She muttered while sprinting towards the pantry. Akira, Shlok's personal secretary collided into her. "What a start to a day?' Astha thought.

"Shlok sir doesn't take more than one sugar cube... he doesn't take more than one sugar cube Akira dear don't forget..." Akira repeated under her breath.

"To hell with your Shlok sir..." Astha blurted and stepped aside to run down some water in her parched throat. While gulping down the icy chilly water something clicked her mind.

"You didn't do good Agnihotri...but no worries... two can play the game!" She murmured and silently slipped five huge cubes of sugar in Shlok's coffee. Akira, the dumb diva, was of course busy rattafying her line for the day. Astha smirked and slipped out of the pantry.

Satisfaction was finally their when she heard him shouting over the poor Akira, who had no idea where the cubes emerged all of a sudden when she was busy addressing her heavens. His mood was now spoiled too. You scratch my back I scratch your back.' Astha laughed banging her hand on her desk. Someone stopped and gave her a bizarre look.

"What? Cant a guy laugh in solitude?" She asked. The guy left almost rolling his eyes.

Astha was a happy girl that day, planning her evening out with some friend for shopping. Her moods were high but her fate wasn't. Before mid-break she was informed of the arrival of the clients from somewhere and she, of all the people had to present the presentation which was nowhere near completion.

For the love of humanity does anyone in this office care to inform in time? Or doing everything at the eleventh hour is a tradition... am I a robot? How does this institute work O GOD!' She cursed everything around and stabbed the screen of her monitor. Her screen saver read Time is money' She rolled her eyes If time is money then I am an extravagant for sure.'

She was a hard worker no doubt and most of the time her hard work paid off too. The presentation was spectacular, the clients impressed and somewhere so was Shlok. She wasn't any ordinary girl when it came to her profession.

Everyone flew out of the office as soon as the presentation was over. The office was a deserted cemetery with the graves of silent PC's. She discussed the final points from the meeting with Shlok and realized the time was almost past ten. She gasped.

"What the?" She exclaimed. Shlok looked up and raised his brow in question.

"It's ten..."

"So?"

She felt like banging her head in the wall.

"Sir, I am getting late... where will I find my transport now?" She sighed. He looked at her intently before settling his gaze somewhere else.

"Okay you may leave..." He said. Astha, for a moment, though her vision blurred. She blinked twice thrice to clear the vision, packed her stuff and made it for the exit. She did not know Shlok was leaving behind her too. Around her desk her head did a 360 degree and she lost her balance. His strong frame stopped her from swaying in the air.

"Are you okay Astha?" He asked surprisingly anxious.

Astha remembered she had not taken any meal for the day. The lunch break was eaten up by the presentation making she had been working without a morsel in her stomach for the entire day. And to add to the top of everything she had taken two hundred and forty three steps with a sole glass of milk in her poor tummy.

"I think this is for skipping lunch and..." She deliberately trailed off. Shlok realized what she wanted to say. Guilt took over him he though may be the elevator joke was too much.

"Can you walk?" He asked.

"I wanna try..." She said trying to free herself from his grip. He immediately loosened his grip. But those obnoxious dark and white circles were no soon gonna leave her side. She lost her balance again.

"Leave it..." He said and before she knew he had picked her up in his arms. Astha' shocked beyond limits gawked at him. He walked towards the elevator.
