EPILOGUE
A little over 7 months later, on a bright, nippy December morning, almost exactly two years after they had confessed their love for the first time, Ashutosh and Nidhi welcomed a lovely little baby girl into their lives, their new bundle of joy...
Two days after their baby was born, Nidhi found herself alone in her hospital bed for the first time and her baby was fast asleep in the crib next to her. It was a rare occurrence now for she was always surrounded by people since after the birth. Any day now both her daughter and she would be going home! Her gaze automatically went to her little one while contemplating at how much her life had changed in the last few months. From the moment they left that hilltop almost 8 months back, their life had turned into one giant adventure, and she had a sneaking feeling this was just the beginning! So much had taken place, first was the Anniversary party, then their Europe trip, Anji's baby, her own God-Bharai' and now finally this! For starters they were late reaching the party! Even today she smiled to herself as she thought of that evening...
May 8th, 2013, At the Party...
With the results clutched tightly in her one hand, and the other gripping Dr. Ashutosh's hand till they felt the sweat in their palms, they both entered CV's house. BB was the first to spot them,
BB: "Ashu, Nidhi, beta why are you both late? We have been waiting since 8.00."
Dr. Ashutosh: "Sorry Baba, we got caught in traffic. I took Nidhi to the hilltop to enjoy the sunset and then because of traffic it took longer to come. Sorry!"
Nidhi: "Sorry, Baba, DB... Please don't be angry! Actually we also have..."
But before she could finish DB's tirade had begun,
DB: "Dactaar, you have lost your mind in her company! You both went all the way to the hilltop just to see the sunset! Can't you see that in your backyard? Humph!"
With a shake of her head and clicking of her tongue, she continued,
DB: "Ok, ok... now come on let's eat before everything gets cold and then we also have a cake to cut. Anji has ordered it for you and she wants you to cut the cake at 12.00 sharp. So come on now...."
But Dr. Ashutosh and she were neither listening to DB nor unable to move from their spots. They had been making eyes at each other trying to decide who would break the news' to everyone. A slightly irritated DB tapped on Nidhi's arm causing the papers to fall on the floor...
DB: "Nidhi, I am saying something and you are not listening! And Dactaar, what happened to you? Now what is this?"
That effectively jolted them back into action! DB had noticed the papers that had fallen, picked it up and read it! Soon mayhem erupted, explanations were asked and congratulations and blessings were showered and their wedding anniversary celebrations took on a whole new flavor! Amidst protests and forgetting her restrictions, even Anji got up to hug Nidhi as tight as her bulge would allow! To add to it they also revealed their travel plans. DB had immediately protested but BB had supported them but had advised caution. The rest as they say is history!
Smiling to herself at that recollection she lay down trying to catch some sleep when her baby was napping. But other memories came pouring in, memories of Europe...
Her thoughts went back to her next check-up, about four weeks after their anniversary. They were both extremely nervous wondering what the verdict would be after that check-up and scheduled ultra-sound and were supremely elated when Dr. Sinha had given them an all-clear signal for their travel with a few tips for their travel, though DB continued to remain against it. Finally after some explanations and promises from Dr. Ashutosh she relented! But considering her condition they had already decided that they would be gone for only for a week starting with the conference in the middle of June, rather than the two weeks Dr. Ashutosh had originally planned. Their first stop had been Paris, "The City of Love" and "The City of Light" where Dr. Ashutosh had his conference. Though she had initially been apprehensive to rub shoulders with other stalwarts in the field of neurology and neuro-surgery, she attended the sessions and had soon started enjoying the lectures and debates. They had remained in Paris for three days after the conference. The night the conference concluded they took a cruise on the River Seine followed by a visit to the top of the Eiffel Tower. Dr. Ashutosh had chosen to stay in one of the smaller boutique hotels near the tower itself which was a more central location to many of the famous attractions. Over the next two days, they toured all around Paris seeing the Louvre, Cathedral Notre Dame, Arc de Triomphe and walked along Champs-lyses, the fashion capital of the world, and shopped at the exquisite Galleries Lafayette where they purchased a pretty baby blanket. The next and final stop was Zurich, Switzerland. On the first two days they visited places around north-central Switzerland returning to Zurich each night. Then came the last day in Zurich which was also the last day of their trip. Just remembering that evening made her blush even now...
On the third and final day of their trip after going around the old city on one side of the Limmat River they walked up to the shores of the lake where they ate lunch at a streetside caf. Then they retraced their steps along the other river edge and stopped at the famous Confisserie Sprungli for a hot chocolate drink and some sweet delicacies that the store was famous for. As they left the store Dr. Ashutosh had literally dragged her back to the room as if they were going to catch a flight! Upon reaching their room, he had made her sit on the bed,
Nidhi: "Dr. Ashutosh, what is it?"
Dr. Ashutosh: "Sh...shh! No more words... You know Nidhi, pregnancy suits you! And I have wanted to do this since..."
Saying that he then proceeded to slowly lick the little bit of chocolate that was stuck to one side of her lower lip...
Dr. Ashutosh: "Hmmm... delicious! Chocolate never tasted this good before! Now where was I?... Aaah... yes!"
His lips journeyed to the other side of her mouth while his hands traveled up her back to the top of the loose sundress she was wearing on top of her tights. As she felt the clasp give way she closed her eyes and automatically her hands moved up his back. Soon they were oblivious to everything except for the effect they were having on each other...
But their happiness had not ended there. They had returned to Lucknow the next day and the day after their return Anji suddenly went into labor, a whole week earlier than her scheduled Caesarian. And much to everyone's joy and relief she had safely delivered a healthy baby girl! That was six months back...
Now as she lay on her bed, Nidhi looked over towards the crib. She smiled as she saw her baby was still fast asleep wrapped up in that very same baby blanket they had purchased in Paris. They were scheduled to go home in two days later. Just as sleep claimed her, she murmured, "I cannot wait to take you home my sweet angel..."
10 days later...
Dr. Ashutosh walked in to a well-lit, well decorated and boisterous house that was a far cry to the dark, desolate and silent one he used to inhabit two years back. He was back home after attending to some last minute arrangements for the Naamkaran' ceremony of their daughter. The moment he stepped in he made a beeline to their room eager to see his wife and daughter whom he had last seen a whole hour back! As he walked in the doorway he saw Anji was there with her now 6 month old daughter.
Both Nidhi and Anji were sitting on the sofa, chatting and holding the two babies on their laps. On the wall behind them was an old photo of their mothers, one of the many photos of her mother that Nidhi had added in their house in the last few months, and next to it was the photo that he had taken of both of them on Anji's God-Bharai'. Tears pooled in his eyes as he took in this scene between the two friends thinking, "Soon, very soon, there will be a photo of the two little girls on the same wall next to their mothers' and grand-mothers', another generation of a lifetime of friendship..."
Just as he stood there thinking, Nidhi lifted her head to see him gazing at them, but it was clear to her that his thoughts were miles away! And suddenly for the first time she noticed the photos that hung on the hallway behind where her husband was standing now. There was one photo of her mother and BB together in the garden, another one of her and CV together on the terrace counting stars. A sudden thought struck her that clogged her throat and made her emotional and teary, "Soon, very soon, next to those photos there will be a photo of our daughter with Dr. Ashutosh sharing their favorite activity! Another generation will continue the same tradition..."
As if they both sensed each other's appraisal, they came out of their reverie at the same time, both their eyes reflecting the wetness in them. As Dr. Ashutosh walked in smiling through his tears, Anji slipped out on the pretext of helping DB. He came closer and sat beside Nidhi, placed one hand on each of his two favorite girls and gently kissed their foreheads. After clearing his throat...
Dr. Ashutosh: "Are you both ready?"
Nidhi: "Yes, the Panditji' will be coming soon. You should get ready too."
Both smiled and looked down upon the tiny bundle that Nidhi held, who will command the center of attraction today, but for them she was, is and will always represent their tribute to their love for each other... she was their Anjali!
