Chapter 15

The rest of the day Maan dictated Geet her work and made a point of her sitting in his cabin. She typed and made notes. Occasionally she would go to her coffee machine and get coffee. They had reached lunch time and Maan felt hungry.

"Geet, we can make a break and have lunch."

"No thank you Mr Khurana. I am skipping." She held the end of her pen in her mouth and read through her notes.

"Are you sure, you look like you could have something." But Geet refused. When Maan came back Geet had finished her work.

"I am done with these files but there is a problem with one of them." Geet showed him the file.

"It might be a printing error but better to get it checked." Maan called the account department. He had a brief chat after which two older files were brought in. Both studied the papers and what Maan found he didn't want to believe. Since quit some time now some one was transferring money from KC to an unknown account. The amounts were never large but the total ended up to a large sum. He looked at the date from where it had started.

"How did you find out Geet?" he asked after some time.

"The totals don't add up."

"You re-checked them?"

"Yup. I trust my brain more than the computer. One little typing error can make a huge difference hence I always double check the numbers. What are you going to do next?"

"Fire this person and make sure he lands in jail." Maan said with anger.

"And the money?" He looked at her.

"You know, you might send him or her to jail, where he or she will sooner or later come out of. Getting a new job shouldn't be such a big problem either but you won't get your money back if they claim to have spent it all. Don't you think your money should be returned to you?"

"Geet Handa talking about money, I never thought I would live to see this day" he said sarcastically.

"Well, it is not only your money. Every penny KC loses is a loss for its workers as well. I am rather thinking about long term damage not the short term ones."

"So what do you want me to do?"

"Nothing. Just let them continue." Maan looked at Geet as if she had lost it.

"Have you lost it?"

"No I haven't. They need to confess themselves that they have the money and there is a way how." Geet explained to Maan. He wondered how she came up with such ideas in the first place.

"And this is going to work? Seems like a bad idea from a cheap detective novel."

"Suit yourself Mr Khurana. Not that I will be the loser at the end." She turned as she couldn't hold her smile. Maan turned red. Did she just call him loser? He will show her.

"Ok we will do as you say." Maan called his accounts department for a meeting in the special conference hall. He elaborated his dilemma. Money had been stolen but he was at a loss as to who it was. He trusted his accounts department to find out and tell him. As his phone buzzed he left saying he would return in a few minutes. The minute the room had shut, everyone started talking and speculating.

Maan and Geet were in the security's cabin, closely watching everyone. Some were genuinely surprised and some were sitting there very calmly. Marcello, KC's security officer was watching too. He had sent down a few men to quickly follow Maan's order. When Maan returned and told that the meeting was over they all dispersed as quickly as possible. Marcello had headphones on and was sitting in front of multiple screens. Maan was watching intently but Geet had a look around the security office. Marcello was the head and had his own working space. One wall was completely covered with snaps of him and his wife Ruby. He had packets of snacks and instant coffee all around the place. Just looks like my old working space back at the lab' Geet thought.

"There we have them sir" Marcello took off the headphones and passed them on to Maan. He put them on and heard the entire conversation between two employees. He had hired them shortly after firing Adi. Again he regretted. Adi had been trust worthy and loyal all the time Maan had known him. Just one personal problem and everything went wrong.

Maan called the police and both were arrested. The evidence was more than sufficient as they had confessed and Maan had written proof. He thanked Geet.

"Don't mention it Mr Khurana. I was just doing my job."

"Why do you keep calling me Mr Khurana? Every one here calls me Maan sir or MK or DD."

"DD?"

"Yes" he smiled proudly.

"DD stands for Dhak Dhak. That is apparently what their hearts do when they see me."

"And why would it do that?" Geet asked deviously. Maan looked at her.

"They think I am handsome and just to die for" he replied, raising his nose a little higher than usual and with tones of pride in his tone. Geet laughed whole heartedly. Maan fell in love with her laughter. It was so innocent and child like, yet so beautiful and melodic.

"Have you ever considered that their heart rate increases because they are afraid of you?" Geet asked after calming down a little.

"Afraid?" Maan had never thought about it in that way.

"Yeah on account of you being a DD yourself, a Dusht Daanav." Geet laughed some more as Maan turned red. Never had anyone called him something like that. The usual word was Greek God and now he was called Dusht Daanav.

Geet's phone rang. She picked it up as it was from Muskaan. Geet listened and looked at her watch. She was shocked to see it was 7.30 pm already.

"Listen, I will be in MC shortly. Don't move from there, ok." She hung up and said to Maan:

"I am leaving now, see you tomorrow" after a seconds thought she added "DD". Maan could hear her laughter all the way till she had taken the lift. He turned in his seat and saw the guy actually hugging Geet. He stood up and put both his hands on the window. They drove off and Maan had to admit to himself that he was jealous. The more he saw of Geet, the more he had her around, the more he wanted her. It was the fact that she was so different towards him; the little discussion about DD' just proved it.

At home Maan got ready for his evening work out and looked at himself in the mirror. He had well trained muscles, a healthy looking tan; his stubbles were another feature which added to his good looks.

"No, I cannot see even the glint of a Dusht Daanav." He shook his head like a school boy who finally proved that one plus one does not equal eleven.

Geet was at MC. Muskaan had been at the mall to get some things for Geet. The rain had caught her by surprise and now she was fully drenched. Geet saw why Muskaan was worried and there were even tears in her eyes. The girl preferred wearing simple salwaar kameez and today she had opted for a white one. Now that it was all wet it was totally transparent and revealing way too much of her body. Her dupatta wasn't a big help either.

"Come with me." Geet pulled Muskaan to her apartment. She made the girl sit on her bed and opened her cupboard. After searching she found a suitable dress.

"Muskaan, take this. There is the bathroom, go change." Muskaan came out after a few minutes and Geet couldn't stop looking. Muskaan, with her wet hair and the dress just looked like her younger sister Rajji. The memory brought tears in Geet's eyes and Muskaan got concerned.

"What happened Geet, are you ok?" Geet nodded wiping the tears.

"You just look like my younger sister Rajji in that dress. She would be your age by now."

"Why what happened?"

"She died a few months ago." Muskaan was shocked. After a long time Geet felt like actually talking to someone. She told Muskaan all about Sohan and his death and her taking over MC. Muskaan was in tears, too, her being an extremely emotional person. Both hugged.

"Muskaan, can I ask you for a favour? Can I be your sister?"

"Of course didi." Geet arranged for Raj to drive Muskaan home as it was late and dark outside.

After having some instant noodles she looked at her calendar. It was high time for her to arrange for her departure. She had promised to come a week prior to Riya's final exam and she was a woman of her word. Geet mailed her application for leave to human resources at KC, hoping that she would not have to face any problems but she had forgotten Maan.
