Richa Chadda talks about missing the cue during a show, dancing in the middle of a market, and that one thing that freaks her out
Your father owns a management firm and your mother is a professor, was there any pressure to pursue academics?
I did my Masters in Communication from Sophia College. My mother was very keen on me getting a job as a bureaucrat or a lawyer, but I wasn't. My parents wanted me to prepare for law exams and UPSC exams. They wanted me to have a Plan B, as according to them, the film industry cannot be depended upon.
You grew up in Delhi, which has a distinct food culture. Do you miss any dish in particular?
Authentic Mughlai food! There are many restaurants here that promise you that, but what they serve is nowhere close to what we get in Delhi! In fact, I make frequent trips to Delhi just to gorge on the food. But, I also find the street-food of Mumbai very innovative. I had no inkling of what a tava pulao or a ragda patties is before I moved to the city.
Any incident that caused you major embarrassment?
Yes. Once I had to walk the ramp for a show. I was expected to look all elegant and sophisticated-- which I managed to. But I missed the cue and left the ramp before the designers could join me. I had to make a second appearance. It was quite awkward.
Has a woman ever tried to hit on you?
Well, 'women' have. And frankly, it freaked me out. But I must say, as a little girl, I was totally smitten with Madhuri Dixit--although not in a sexual way! I wanted to do everything like her. I think she is so beautiful that even a plant can have a crush on her.
Are you an adventurous person?
I think so. Recently, I was in Sweden and the mercury was dropping by the hour. But, I was in no mood to skip my morning jogs. I went out in that freezing temperature and when I reached the market area, I heard some Bollywood song playing somewhere. I spontaneously broke into a dance in the middle of the street leaving the locals shocked.
