Chapter 26
"Shashi, what happened?" Thakur Alok hurried to greet his chief trainer cum best friend as the other man walked towards the library; the very same library that Maharaja Arnav Singh Raizada had just requested the use of!
"I will tell you later my friend. For now I have to discuss it out with the Maharaja himself."
"But what ..." Alok's voice trailed off. Shashi smiled at his friend as he squeezed his shoulder affectionately. "Later yaar."
He knocked on the library door and as the terse permission to enter floated out, Shashi went inside, leaving Alok standing outside in puzzlement. Alok fervently hoped his friend was not in any trouble with the Maharaja. He walked towards the drawing room to wait for them to finish their discussion.
Inside the library Arnav watched the older man as he entered the library, nodding politely to Arnav in greeting. But Arnav was past any pleasantries himself. He was still feeling the aftershocks of his earlier discovery. And the man in front of him was the person with all the answers. Almost without any preamble, he launched in to speech:
"Mr Gupta, how do you know Khushi?"
"I assume you mean Aniket, Maharaja Saheb?"
"I mean Khushi, Mr. Gupta; Khushi! The young girl I saw earlier; the one who has been masquerading as your nephew!
"Not just masquerading Maharaja Saheb, Aniket really is part of my family."
"Khushi Mr Gupta; it's Khushi and not Aniket."
"Maybe for you but not for me."
Arnav clenched his teeth in anger. The man in front of him was not going to make it easier, was he? Khushi / Aniket; what difference did it make? They were one and the same person. However, he was filled with a deep need that this man admits to it. He opened his mouth to refute the claim until he got a good look at Shashi Gupta. He had a terse look on his face. There and then Arnav decided that it would be better for both of them if he laid his cards on the table.
"Mr Gupta, let's clarify this once and all, shall we? For me that is Khushi while for you it's Aniket. I am well aware that you know exactly who she is. The question is from where a gypsy girl ended up being your nephew? I'll be very frank with you Sir. I know you are aware that my men have been looking for a gypsy girl. But she is not just an ordinary gypsy girl; she is also the future daughter-in-law of the Raizada family."
All this while Shashi had been maintaining his silence but this last sentence floored him. Daughter-in-law? From where did that come?
"Forgive me Maharaja Saheb, but did I hear you correctly? Do you mean that the gypsy girl you have been looking for is your fiance?"
"Not at the moment but she will be; as soon as I find her or to be more precise as soon as you admit the truth."
"The truth? The truth, Maharaja Saheb, is that the person staying at my house is under my protection. I am duty and honour bound as well as love bound to protect that same person. I am prepared to do that under any cost. All other truths pale in comparison to that one particular one!!!"
In that moment Maharaja Arnav Singh Raizada felt that he was dealing with a fiercely protective father looking out for his daughter. The man in front of him was just an ordinary trainer but he was not scared or intimidated by Arnav's presence. Looking in to those implacable eyes, Arnav knew that it was just the beginning. This man would have the whole truth before he admitted to anything. To Arnav, it was equally important that Khushi become a part of his life; too many things depended on it. He forged ahead with his earlier decision to lay his cards on the table.
"Mr Gupta, I met Khushi a few months back in the forests of Devgarh. I fell for her right there and then. I wanted to possess her like anything; literally move mountains in order to achieve it. But in my single minded ambition, I did something that I am very ashamed of. I offered her to become my mistress. She refused; with a lot of dignity. I wanted her very badly and when she refused, I went off the rails and retaliated by dishonouring her in front of her tribe. I did it with a complete lack of disregard for her and her mother. I left there, not knowing what fate befell her."
Arnav stopped here; the thought of revealing Maan Singh's findings to this man choked him. To have someone else; an outsider know the havoc his own callousness created was deeply shaming for him.
For his part, Shashi his surprise very well. When he had entered the library he had had no idea what to expect. But it was certainly not to be told the story direct from the horse's mouth; in this case the Maharaja himself! He was under no illusions; the younger man hated every minute of his revelations. His expression was tortured but at the same time, he was meeting Shashi's gaze head on. There was no shrinking and cutting of corners here! When the Maharaja stopped speaking, Shashi remained quiet, waiting for him to continue. Arnav obliged him.
"I left Devgarh in anger for Delhi but halfway through I came back. That is when I found out that Khushi and her tribe had left Rajasthan. Since then my men have been looking for them and it was just a few weeks ago that they found them. However, Khushi was not there and not even her tribe's people knew where she was. It is then that I found out exactly what happened to her as a result of my actions. Her tribe people punished her; they actually ... whip ...whipped her. I have been looking for her all this while. It is very important that I find her Mr Gupta."
A heavy silence fell as Arnav finished speaking. He was breathing hard while his throat ached. He wondered what the other man was thinking for Shashi Gupta was standing with his head slightly bowed. And then he looked up and spoke:
"All this is very well Maharaja Saheb but what does this have to do with my Aniket. From what I understand it's not the first time in history that a mere commoner has had to pay the price for the attentions of royalty. In fact this no doubt has happened many times till now. What is so special about this gypsy girl? Your men have been looking all over for her. If she was whipped then chances are that she definitely is not the beautiful girl from earlier. She no doubt carries the scars of that brutality on her body. Forgive me for saying so but under the circumstances I feel that you should forget about this girl. A hurt and possibly maimed girl and the daughter-in-law of royalty; who will accept it? It will be much better for everyone concerned if you forgot about her Maharaja Saheb."
This was the second time that someone had suggested that he forget Khushi. How could he do that? Hurt or maimed, she was still Khushi. He had ... No! He couldn't forget her, no matter what!
"Mr Gupta, I cannot forget her. Not now and not ever. She is too important for me to do so."
"Not ever! Maharaja Saheb, what is so special about a mere gypsy girl? if I'm not mistaken, all you have to do is beckon and forget a gypsy, even a princess will drop all she holds and run to you!"
"That may be the case but I am not interested in a princess Mr Gupta. It's Khushi I'm interested in!"
"A hurt and scarred girl!"
"She may be hurt or scarred or maimed Mr Gupta but she is the one I'm after."
"I see. You mentioned the daughter-in-law of your family. By this, does it mean that your family is aware of this story?"
"Yes they are."
"Oh! And they agreed that you should marry this girl."
"Not only have they agreed on it but they are actively looking forward to it. My mother is not speaking to me until I marry Khushi and bring her to Devgarh Palace as her daughter-in-law."
And there lay the crux of the matter. The Maharaja was trying to pacify his family, Shashi realized. He was looking for Khushi because the girl represented a way to get back in his family's good graces. To all intents and purposes, if Shashi handed Khushi over to the Maharaja here and now, her outer life would go back to normal and her honour restored. She would marry the Maharaja and all the respect and honour of his family would be hers. No one would ever dare to point a finger at her again. And Shashi had seen the ladies of Devgarh. No doubt the Raajmata and Maharani Mamta Raizada would see to the girl's welfare and ensure she would be well treated. But did Khushi deserve it? Did that hurt and scared girl deserve a fate that would be hers purely on the basis of fulfilling the Maharaja's obligations? Didn't she deserve a life where she could be happy? Didn't she deserve a proper home and a husband who would love her? What about Khushi herself? From what he understood about his little girl, she had loved this Maharaja at one time but did she still feel the same way? And what about that all too real fear that he had just seen in her eyes? All these thoughts ran in Shashi Gupta's head while Arnav stood there tensely, waiting for some response from him. But out of all this, the one thing that Shashi Gupta was very sure of and that was that the Maharaja had seen Khushi himself; he had no choice than to admit to it and attempt to negotiate matters in a way that would benefit Khushi the most. If nothing else, than the poor child deserved a champion who would fight for her till the very end. And Shashi Gupta was determined to be that champion!
"Well Maharaja Saheb, I can understand your dilemma. But have you considered Khushi's point of view? Would she want to be found by you or to marry you? From what I can see, you wish to marry her as she serves a purpose; she will heal the rift between you and your family. But what about her? What does she get? Don't you think she deserves a husband who loves her? I suppose what I want to know is what you really feel for her? Do you love her?"
"Love her???"
"Yes, love her. You are looking for her, you want to marry her but what about loving her?"
Love! Arnav didn't understand much about love. He loved his Dadi, mother and sister but loving another woman; he couldn't really say. He felt very bad and ashamed about his treatment of Khushi. He had been actively looking for her to make amends but loving her? He had never thought about it. In fact he had never really thought about what he felt for her. In the beginning it had been about attraction. Then it became desire, lust even. In between had come anger, blinding anger! There had even been a time when matters had come to revenge; finding her so he could extract revenge. And then when he found out about her fate, it had become remorse; stark remorse and a deep need to make amends; to restore what all he had cost her. In fact lately he had even forgotten about her as a girl; she had become the goal he had to attain. More like his light at the end of the tunnel. He just knew he had to get there. So where did love come in the equation? He was confused and he didn't mind admitting it. He didn't know about love but he knew that he had to find her and marry her. Love? Maybe it would come later. But later? What if she didn't want him anymore? But then had she ever wanted him. Here was another thing for him to be ashamed about. In between seeing her and pursuing her, he had never really considered what she felt for him! But he reasoned she had come to him at Devgarh on that fateful night. She must have felt something then. Arnav shook his head slightly.
"Mr Gupta I don't know much about love. But what I do know is that I want to marry her. I have cost her many things. Marriage will restore all those things back to her. She is truly an innocent being and she never deserved what all was dealt to her. I am the man responsible for all bad things happening in her life and I am the one who will make amends. To get back to the matter at hand, I know that the person everyone calls Aniket is Khushi. She lives at your house, masquerading as a boy. Whatever the reasons, now that I have found her, I have no intention of losing her again."
"Maharaja Saheb, you are correct in that it is Khushi at my house. I have been looking after her all this while. But one thing I would ask you to consider here is her feelings. Would it be fair for you to marry her because it serves a purpose for you? What if she doesn't want to marry you? What than?"
"Mr Gupta ..."
A discreet knock interrupted whatever Arnav had been going to say. The knock was repeated and Arnav frowned impatiently. He had specifically asked that they not be disturbed. What the hell? He opened his mouth to call out but Thakur Alok spoke up before, from the other side of the door.
"Maharaja Saheb, forgive the interruption but there is an urgent message for Shashi."
Both men frowned before Shashi hurriedly opened the door. Standing a few paces behind Thakur Alok was a beautiful woman. A woman who was looking rather wild at the moment, her hair wind-blown and her ghoonghat lying on her shoulders. But her ghoonghat was recognisable. My God, it was Garima. Shashi was truly stunned at this revelation. He opened his mouth but Garima beat him to it!
"Saheb, please hurry home. Aniket is missing!!!"
"WHAT???"
Two distinct voices roared the command but the louder voice was Maharaja Arnav Singh Raizada's. But for once in her life Garima forgot to be intimidated!
"Saheb, she said she was going to rest but when I went to check on her, she was not there. It's nearly dark now and I don't know where she could have gone off to."
Arnav spun to face Shashi. Damn the man if he had hidden Khushi somewhere. But one glance at the worried face of the older man and he knew that was not so. Instantly he took command.
"We have to find her. She must have gone in the forest. We need horses. Thakur Alok?"
"Of course Maharaja Saheb. At once."
Confused but understanding the gravity of the situation, Alok complied at once and within minutes, a search party was organised and the men mounted. Arnav sat on Sultan's back, ready to leave when Shashi Gupta spoke from behind him.
"She was scared. Before I came here, I told her I would not let anything happen to her but she was too scared, maybe."
Arnav's face tightened. It seemed he couldn't get anything right where his little gypsy was concerned but damn if he would fail her again. She would not spend the night in the forest, not if he had anything to say about it. He urged Sultan in a canter and took off for the forest, where his instincts were telling, his light at the end of the tunnel was ...
