Chapter#22
Nk had had a hard time getting the video he wanted as a proof to show his best-friend what he had been missing out. He was almost caught in the beginning, twice but he had recovered himself carefully. This, he was doing partly for Khushi because he needed to see his best-friend happy, just like she deserved to be.
Later in that while, when Nk had finally gotten the camera right in the place where it was not visible, he heard his mobile phone ring indicating a message. He had almost fallen off the stack bricks and his camera was this close from falling to the ground. He was even lucky that no body had heard his phone. He looked around and before checking the message he put the phone on silent.
It was Arnav, surprisingly. Nk wasn't expecting Arnav's message but Khushi's. When he first read the message Nk knew Arnav had some problem or something was bothering him. He had quickly told him off that he'd be there in no time.
*
Khushi was still very confused about Arnav's behavior. She took some Jalebi out of the fridge which she had not made herself, surprisingly. She had bought it from the small market she had passed by while coming back from Arnav's office. She needed it, badly.
She was munching on the Jalebi with her left hand and mixing the coffee with her right hand distractedly. She had expected him to be angry at her for two things, of-course. One, She went to his office and then she saw him with Lavanya. Second, He hates it when someone ignores him and she was ignoring him. Then why didn't he pin her up against the wall and shout at her? And today, she had seen him smile. An actual smile. In the room, all alone, he had been smiling.
*
Arnav came down stairs to the kitchen to check up on Khushi. It had been more than 15 minutes. How long did it take to make coffee? He was already frustrated with his feelings. He felt something weird in his heart when he had seen her in the park, after he came back from the office and when she entered the room. Also when she raised her eyebrows, in the room, when he had called out her name; scratch that, whispered her name.
He was going to apologize for today, for yesterday, for making her sleep outside, for everything. But words just didn't come up to his tongue. He had apologized to Anjali and Nk and Nani too at times, then why was it so damn difficult to apologize to her? Instead of apologizing he had asked her for coffee because that's the best he could come up with.
He wanted to ask her why she said that to the little girl but he couldn't. What had sparked hatred in his heart for her? He had questioned himself. Was it because she was the only one in the whole wide world who had talked back and misbehaved with him on the very first meeting? Because in his years of being the famous ASR, nobody did that; even a glare from his side would make the world feel tiny as ever. But she didn't see seem to be affected. Or was it that she had done something to his heart the very first time?
Arnav came and stopped right beside the pillar because the scene before him made him smile. The fourth time in a day, he had smiled.
Khushi was looking at the counter, slowly mixing the coffee mixture with one hand and munching on the Jalebi with the other. He suddenly got the flash-back of their wedding night when he had followed her up to the kitchen and had to pretend as a lovey-dovey husband because Anjali was there.
He was about to go to her when he heard the main door open with a creek. His attention had been diverted when he had seen Nk walk in silently, looking here and there with discomfort.
Nk spotted him and literally ran up to him.
"Arnav we need to talk, now." - Nk said as he let out a heavy sigh.
"I have something important to ask you..." -Arnav abruptly said but was cut off by Nk.
"No, what I have is something related to Lavanya." -Nk said as he pulled Arnav's arm and took him to his room. Arnav glanced back at Khushi once. She had finished her Jalebi and was muttering something to herself. He couldn't hear her but he knew it was about him.
*
Nk asked Arnav to sit down on the recliner and took a deep breath himself.
"Look Arnav, just don't freak out, okay? Stay calm." -Nk said as he slowly took out the camera from his pocket.
"You are freaking me out. Would you tell me already? Whatever it is can't be that bad." -Arnav said curtly as he snatched the camera from Nk.
"I seriously doubt that." -Nk whispered but Arnav had heard it. He angrily glared at him but he looked down as the video played and there he slowly stood up in shock to see what Nk had been trying to tell him since years was true.
*
He didn't know exactly what he should feel. He didn't know how to react. For just a second, he was happy that he had a reason for breaking-up with her because he didn't want to admit the feelings he had for Khushi. For now at least his brain had over come his heart.
And then in another second, anger and hurt took over him. Hurt, because a person he had known for years had cheated on him. He had trusted her. He wanted to hit something. He remembered how his mother felt cheated when she found out about his father. All those bad memories came back making him angrier. And then everything landed on Khushi... how she must have felt. He felt angry because he wasn't able to see through. He was ASR, how could he have let this happen. Finally he came back from his painful memories and thoughts as Nk shook him.
"Arnav... I just..." -He said as he swallowed hard.
"I don't believe this." -Arnav plainly murmured.
"What?" -Nk straightened up in shock.
"I said I don't believe this." -Arnav gritted his teeth.
"Arnav you can't be serious." -Nk chuckled sarcastically.
"Well, does it look like I'm joking?" - Arnav threw the camera which fortunately landed on the bed.
"This time I am at mistake. I shouldn't have done this. I went all through this so that I could see my best-friend happy and what I get is this?" - Nk pointed at Arnav and continued. "You are worthless. Do you even know what your loved ones go through when you give them this attitude?" -Nk put a finger on Arnav chest. "You definitely didn't deserve Lavanya and you certainly DON'T deserve Khushi. You put her life in trouble and ugh... I don't know what to do anymore! How can you NOT believe this? All those times back in America Lavanya wanted you because you were popular. Hadn't you heard the rumors about her? And then even I tried to tell you but you never listened. I had this solid proof and you said you don't believe this. YOU are unbelievable." -Nk gritted his teeth.
"Nk you don't understand I said that I don't believe what I ..." -Arnav explained but Nk just turned away.
"Go F*ck yourself...ASR" -Nk pressurized ASR and left while the door gave a harsh thud sound.
*
Arnav just sat by the poolside on the chair with his head in his hands. How could he have been so blind? So much had happened today... There was Khushi, then Lavanya, Nk and then again Khushi. The one who wasn't even at crime.
"You have to listen to me. It's about Lavanya. She's cheating on you, she herself told me. I swear I'm not lying. She is using you for your money. She wants me to get married to you so that you'd forget her and fall in lo... "-Khushi broke off.
"Enough! How dare you say things like that? I know what you are trying to do. Yu want me to hate her and get married to you and live happily ever after. Well I guarantee you that that'll never happen, Miss. Khushi Kumari Gupta." -Arnav said with taking two quick strides towards her. He held her arms angrily and shook her once with all his might.
"I don't believe you! And I will never believe your little lies." -He said gritting his teeth.
"Ar...Arnav jee you're hurting me." - Khushi said in short breaths.
"You will do as I say. Live with me for the next 6 months and if you open your mouth even if by mistake I swear it'll turn out bad for Payal. I'll force Akash and I hope by now you know what I can do." -Arnav whispered in anger. Arnav pushed her away from him and stormed out of the room leaving a wretched Khushi behind.
He felt as if his heart had been stabbed.
Nk's words occupied his mind now. Nk didn't even listen to him properly. Nk didn't understand his words. He never meant to say that he didn't believe Nk but he meant that he didn't believe himself. He kicked the table in frustration. He took a cigarette out, lit it and started smoking.
*
Khushi had finally made the coffee and now was ready to take it to him. Although she was scared of what might happen next, what he might do. She could never be too sure about him.
As she walked up the stairs she met Nk, who was in deep thought as he walked slowly down the stairs almost colliding with her.
"Nk, what's wrong?" -She put a hand on his shoulder.
"Huh? Oh Khushi it's you. I was just... going to get some things from market." -He said not meeting her gaze.
"But at this time?" -Khushi frowned.
"I'll talk to you later." -Nk patted her cheek and went downstairs with quick and long steps.
Khushi let it be. He must have something that he needed from market. She started walking slowly towards their...his room.
*
It was extremely dark in the room. There was no moonlight as well. The cloud cover was thick and dark, although it hadn't actually begun to rain yet. The whole sky was a sullen purple, which gave it a nightmarish look. The grey silk curtains flew carelessly, as far as they could get. As the thunder growled making Khushi frightened and she was the outline of Arnav's back.
He was just standing there, looking up the sky and smoking. She hadn't seen him smoke, in these two weeks of knowing him. And she hadn't been this scared of him, she didn't know why but she was scared of him.
She slowly approached him, her anklets jingling slightly making them sound louder than usual. He moved, she felt it.
"Coffee..." -She stretched her hands out with the tray.
"I don't want it." -He merely whispered but she had heard it.
"What but you asked me for it?" -Her voice suddenly louder and then the next moment he just spun around and held her shoulders. The lightening gave his face a horrific look.
"Don't you understand? I don't want it. JUST THROW IT AWAY! AND GET AWAY FROM ME!" -He shouted in her face. Khushi felt goose bumps on her body and her face went pale, her eyes wide in shock.
He took the tray and threw it away making the tray and cup bang and the hot coffee splash on him and her. She hissed as drops fell on her right arm and her right foot. He took two large steps and he was out of the poolside and out of the room in another second.
Khushi couldn't control her tears anymore. She looked back as his faint cologne left the place. She walked up to the dressers drawer and took her diary out; hurriedly opening it and looking for an empty page and all she could write was...
He did it again.
