Reyaansh gave his hand, I looked at Maa. She slightly nodded indicating yes. I gave my hand in his. Ira shut the door and we were alone with our enemies. "Walk next to me and keep silent" he said. I left his hand and held my brother's hands but it was as if we're walking through a foreign palace. Kalpi's soilders had occupied every room, packing our riches for taking them to Kalpi.
"How does Mritunjay knows his men aren't stealing things for themselves" I whispered in our mother tongue. "Because none of them would be so foolish." Reyaansh responded, he was so perfect in our mother tongue.
"The children have smart looks. So you are Raghavan?" Mritunjay said. My brother nodded. "Yes, But I go with Raghu. Your Highness"
"Call him Mritunjay, as we call him" Reyaansh remarked.
"Yes, Mritunjay" he said.
"And your sister?" Reyaansh asked.
"Im Kria and I can speak" I taunted.
"Hmm, I can see that" he taunted back.
"and the boy?" Adhvrushya asked. "He's Ishaan" I replied. Their muscles clenched seeing my confidence. My grip tightened at my brother's hand, and as we reached the courtyard of the palace. Reyaansh and Adhvrushya turned to us.
"There will be no more speaking unless spoken to, understand?' The three of us nodded. "Then prepare yourself" he warned as the doors of the palace were thrown open. Evening had settled, and thousand of torches began to burn.
I could see Reyaansh tense as he doubted one if my father's loyal men would kill Mritunjay before we sailed to Kalpi. He checked his sword at his side. He was younger than I had first assumed him to be, not even twenty. He was just seventeen, but he was the one Mritunjay trusted with his life. It was his broad shoulders and impressive height which made him look elder.
On left was the great theater. I tried to remember the first time my father had taken us there. My so many performances had taken place there. Beyond that was our Gurukul, where Raghu and I had begun our studies when we were five.
I wished I could speak to Raghu, but I kept my silence as I had been instructed, and instead weeping over my father's death. I was looking at Vardha, My city. Perhaps this will be my last visit here, I will never be able to see the streets of Vardha again. In three days we'll sail to Kalpi, these are my last few days here I thought and swallowed against the increasing pain in my throat. I blinked back my tears.

We returned to palace. Mritunjay smiled, his steps grew uncertain. In courtyard a women was screaming. She ran towards Mritunjay and in single motion soldiers joined their shields.
"Mritunjay, there's a news" she cried.
"Put down your shields" Mritunjay ordered.
I glimsed her face between the armour of two soldiers and cried "Princess Kria, your mother! you must come. She is dying."
Adhvrushya looked to Mritujay, and neither of them stopped us when the soldiers parted, and I ran with Ishaan and Raghu through the palace. I don't remember anyone followed. "Move away! Move" Raghu shouted at servants. My mother lay peacefully on a couch in the center in center of the room.
"Maa" I crept forward, while behind us Mritunjay, Adhvrushya and Reyaansh stood at the doorway. When she didn't move, I screamed "Maa" Raghu and I ran to her. "Maa" I pleaded. I shook her by the shoulders, and the crown she had carefully placed on her head struck the floor. Below her on Floor Ira was lying.
I took Ira's hands in mine, but the hands which taught me dance were cold. I grasped her arm and saw two punctired wounds. "Raghu, she used a snake" I turned. Reyaansh rushed to my side and felt my mother's heartbeat and then bent down to Ira. "How do you know?" he asked quickly.
"Look at her arm."
Reyaansh rose swiftly to his feet, "There are snakes in the room.".
"Seal the room, Raghu, Ishaan, Kria move out" Reyaansh ordered.
"No, I wont move.", I moved closer to my mother. "A snake doctor could drain the wound"
But Reyaansh shook his head, "She's already gone Princess."
"You can't be sure." I cried. He looked at Mritunjay for an answer. "Find a snake doctor" he ordered sharply. The soldiers next to him rushed to find the doctor. Reyaansh took Raghu and Ishaan out of the room, knowing they would have a less fight with him.
I wasn't in my senses, I didn't bother to know what is happening around me. I didn't realize that my brothers were not with me, all I cared for that time was my mother. I hugged the person next to me taking him to be Raghu. I wept hard hugging him. I was wondering why isn't he hugging me back.
A few seconds later I felt his warm hands rubbing my back. I hugged him tighter and wept more loud. He kissed my hair lightly, "It's ok, Princess" he said. I pushed him slightly as his voice made me realize he wasn't Raghu. It was Reyaansh, only we both were left inside the room.
"Raghu" I shouted. He turned towards me and stepped forward from the doorway. "Don't step inside. There's at least one cobra in this room." Reyaansh instructed sternly. I looked at my mother looked like one of her statue thin, pale and immovable.
Everyone waited at the entrance of the room for snake doctor. I looked directly into Reyaansh's eyes. "It was a lie! It was all a lie. Mritunjay was never going back to Kalpi in three days. He wanted my mother to die. He wanted her to commit suicide" I whispered in anger to him.
A snake-doctor arrived, I sat taking support of my mother's couch and remained silent. I could hear the rush of my heart beating as I watched him. He located the wound on my mother's arm and made a thin cut above the bites. Then he pressed his lips against her skin and attempted to suck the venom from her body.
I watched him, it felt like eternity. Then at last, he stood up. His lips were red with my mother's blood and his face told clearly that she is gone. "Will our mother be buried here in Vardha" Raghu asked quietly. Mritunjay raised his chin, "Of course. she was the Queen of Vardha"
But there was no remorse on his face, not even surprise. "Will you really keep the children alive?" Adhvrushya asked. Mritunjay's eyes swept over Raghu and me. "Raghu and Kria are fifteen, and Ishaan is just 7. Keeping them alive would be merciful"
"And what about Kalpi?" Reyaansh wanted to know.
"In a week when affairs settle here, We'll sail to Kalpi" Mritunjay declared.
